James seldomly writes of personal matters though he does mention having Christmas "up Mother Sherburn to diner.supper boiled Mother Bickford." Other observations include people falling down wells and breaking arms type thing but moreso this is a super economic detailing of 1864 New Hampshire. Prices of items costs of work 100s of names of people worked for and on and with. James was involved in many pursuits; lumber butchering hauling milling plowing picking apples curing and salting making cider. ‎SPITZBERGEN GREEN HARBOUR NORWAY. Very Good. 1919. Manuscript. On offer is an exceptional archive of two 2 significant historical handwritten note book and diary of Herbert W. Leech Manager of the Marble Dept of The Northern Exploration Company NEC in 1919. It is very interesting reading of the troubles this operation had as the books entirely describe through letters notations and diary entries all the work and grief his operations suffered. Herbert Leech the Manager reports in the letter copies to his superior Mr. W. Holmboe in Tromso from the MINA I Spitzbergen Recherche Bay or Green and King's Harbors. It appears right from the start that Leech was in a sad way as he reports of the ship being unsatisfactory breakdowns continual delays everywhere and always problems with the staff or contractors carpenters especially it seems and he complained of near open mutiny with staff some calling in sick for no reason others barely maintaining a guise as it appears this summer venture was ill-advised or doomed for other reasons. He writes the details of his needs and progress during the expedition including the never ending problems with the ship and his men as well as requests for supplies and spare parts for the engine etc. There are letters telling of the men refusing to work after disagreements over contracts and the continued intoxication of the steward. There are some details of their geological discoveries and the conditions they had to endure. There is a list of expenses incurred on the journey to Tromso Norway and other expense lists including wages of the men etc. The daily diary kept for approximately 3 months of the expedition during July to September in 1919 include details of the mineral deposits they had found in each area with estimated mining output and estimates of the cost of plant and buildings required to open a mine. The area they are surveying is around Spitsbergen including Green Harbour and Kings Bay. There are also geographical geological and technical notes throughout too. The NEC the famous explorer Shackleton was a large shareowner and involved in operations was a British firm firmly established in Norway's Northern and Arctic mining and exploration activities. These books are placed in a very important time as WWI had just ended and the rise of Bolshevism are pertinent as part of the historical backdrop. This is an entirely unique grouping and intimate glimpse into early 20th century arctic exploration and a rare look into their lives as historic explorers. The script is mainly in pencil and reasonably clear to read. HISTORICAL CITINGS: A: Shackleton now became involved in an undercover enterprise. A company the Northern Exploration Company was preparing an expedition to Spitsbergen. Shackleton was asked to be the leader. Ostensibly the company was going to mine mineral claims owned since 1910 by the company. Since 1910 the Germans had a meteorological station at Ebeltofthaven in West Spitsbergen which was only withdrawn at the start of the war. Spitsbergen was a delicate issue as it was administered by Norway a neutral country. With the backing of the British Government the Northern Exploration Company could establish a British presence on the islands. To prove it's commitment the government provided the expedition with an armed merchant ship the ELLA. Frank Wild now commissioned as a temporary lieutenant in northern Russia was selected by Shackleton as his assistant. By the middle of August Shackleton was in northern Norway at Tromsø on his way to Spitsbergen; it was the first time he had crossed the Arctic Circle. It was in Tromsø that Shackleton suddenly became ill. He "changed colour very badly" as McIlroy put it. He suspected a heart attack. Shackleton refused to undress so McIlroy could listen to his heart. This was the first hint that Shackleton might be suffering from heart disease. Shackleton had to turn back arriving in London in early September. Meanwhile the leadership of the expedition was placed under Frank Wild. The northern Russia campaign said General Ironside "was a side show of the Great War". Soldiers could hardly be spared from the front lines so troops were scraped from the bottom of the barrel to be sent to Russia. At this point no one was going to worry about the condition of Shackleton's heart. Early in October Shackleton sailed for Murmansk. As Shackleton wrote it was a "job after my own heart.winter sledging with a fight at the end". As he crossed the Barents Sea he wrote to Janet Stancomb-Wills "All is sheer beauty and keen delight. The very first.snow-squalls bring home to us the memories of our old South Lands. There is a freshness in the air a briskness in the breeze that renews one's youth". "This day 3 years ago the 'Endurance' was crushed in the ice" Shackleton wrote to his younger son Edward on October 26 "and we all were.sleeping on rather moving about on the moving ice with no home to go to. I have been to many places since then now it is the other end of the world". Shackleton had just landed at Murmansk. A fortnight later on November 11 the Armistice was signed. The war with Germany was over. However war in northern Russia was not yet at an end; the Allied forces were now fighting the Bolsheviks instead. The north Russia force had attracted various polar explorers: Macklin Worsley and Hussey from the ENDURANCE EXPEDITION; Stenhouse from the AURORA branch of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition; Victor Campbell the leader of Scott's Northern Party; Dr. Edward Atkinson from the Scott camp and Dr. Eric Marshall from the NIMROD EXPEDITION. Shackleton's official job description was "Staff officer in charge of Arctic equipment". In all actuality he was a glorified storekeeper. He had done most of his work in London and the outfits he now provided were doubtful; his own expeditions had been struggles against poorly designed equipment and clothing. The American troops in the region discarded the Shackleton clothing and boots and reverted to their own. Shackleton was now kept at headquarters in Murmansk with little to do. Shackleton wrote to Emily "I have not been too fit lately. I am tired darling a bit and just want a little rest away from the world and you". The strain of a divided self was showing itself in Shackleton. "I am strictly on the water wagon now" he wrote to Emily at the end of January 1919. He got thoroughly drunk on Christmas Day and in his own words "after a thought I have cut it right out it does me no good and I can tell my imagination is vivid enough without alcohol it makes me extravagant in ideas and I lose balance.I did not upset my superiors everyone was awash only it seems to take different people different ways. If I had not some strength of will I would make a first class drunkard". Shackletons' affairs were in a poor state; money was in short supply. Emily was fending for herself while Cecily was at Roedean and Ray the eldest boy was at Harrow. Shackleton hoped to cover the school fees from selling shares of his stock in the Northern Exploration Company but the transaction never happened. By the end of March 1919 Shackleton was back in London and demobilized after five months in the field. He was regarded well enough by The Times that an interview was requested. In that interview Shackleton stated that nearly half a million people "threw in their lot with us.against the Bolshevist menace. It is thus not merely a question of saving our own troops but a moral obligation to civilization.No domestic or political consideration should be allowed to interfere with steps being taken immediately to prevent anything in the nature of a reverse to our arms in these regions.In Murmansk as elsewhere the peasant is not a Bolshevist.but without armed support he is helpless.do not let us be too late.the British people do not yet realize what Bolshevism means.it is.becoming far worse than German militarism". CITING B The Northern Exploration Company NEC which annexed large expanses of land in Svalbard is engraved into Svalbard history. NEC's land annexations were concentrated where the most profitable mineral deposits were thought to be found. The company was founded in 1910 and was most active in the years around World War I. The background for the activity was the numerous occupations carried out by Ernest Mansfield in Svalbard prior to 1910. NEC bought his land occupations in 1911 and started the construction of Ny-London and the promising marble quarry at Blomstrandhalvøya in Kongsfjorden. NEC owned and operated many mines and prospects in Svalbard most of which were to exploit coal. Other mineral deposits were also prospected such as zinc asbestos iron and marble. Optimism prevailed despite frequent loss of capital in prospects that never materialized. They were big landowners but produced close to nothing. This was the era of Neo-Industrialism and in Svalbard there was a Klondike-like atmosphere in which everyone was affected by the fervour for mineral deposits. Investment capital was readily accessible. The optimism and vitality of the NEC has left many cultural remains. The NEC annexation signs can be found in all the areas they were active with text in three languages to make sure everyone understood this was NEC's land. Transporting equipment to Svalbard was long trying and expensive and the work seasons were short and hectic. The value of the buildings and equipment itself was often less than the cost of disassembly and transport back to the mainland. Installations were therefore often left on site and can today be seen as a witness to dreams for quick profit in enterprises that were discontinued after only a few years of trial operations To summarize: An historic first hand primary account and telling of the 1919 Summer season for the Northern Exploration Company through the manager's diary and letters including: 1 a book of letter-copy letters to head office some suppliers with tucked in notes receipts 60 pages; then 2 a book of financial dealings 30 pages and lastly and most importantly his diary 65 pages. This is a 7 x 5 inch flip style notebook and has some scattered technical geographic technical notes. ‎BUDAPEST HUNGARY EASTERN EUROPE. Very Good. 1937. On offer is a unique original September 1937 through August 1938 manuscript diary that relates the life a young American girl named Sue as per the gift inscription who travels back to her ancestral country of Hungary for an extended holiday whose purpose was likely to find her a traditional husband. The pressure or desire for her to marry is apparent within days of her meeting her European relatives. 'Went to visit Gene's grandmother and aunt. Real congenial people….they talked to me as if I were to become Gene's wife….some dope thought I would fall in love with him within three days.' Sue writes wonderfully of her times traveling regularly to Budapest and the activities of a 17 year old American teenager abroad. There were movies and shows and skating and shopping and dining and more dining and opera and chess and so much more. She also enrolled in the Fodor School of Music. She begins with her travels crossing the Atlantic on the Normandie and then across Europe to Hungary where she stays with relatives dates dozens of men - mostly doctors - and visits the local sites for nearly a year. She does a super job also capturing the tone of the country and the events in other parts of Europe. In one she comments on Germany annexing Austria and how her parents want her to come home. In another she comments on the "Jewish laws" that they are unfair and that "everything is dead". Sue was insightful and articulate and one cannot but be a little chilled reading her personal account with the knowledge that World War II looms on the horizon. Green leather has a leather strip for locking the diary had to be cut. At first I thought these were written by a boy but at the end on the 1899 diary there are mentions of ribbons and fabric in the memo section. The other diary is from 1898. The child wrote everyday but never mentioned a birthday. She seems to have been about 9 or 10 years old. Some examples of her writing are below: It is a nice day. Henry Courser stayed here last night. Mamma Jay and I have been down to grandpas. Papa finished drawing wood today. It is a nice day. Willis Smith has been here. Papa and Jay have been down to Mr. Taylor’s. Gale Eastman and Charley Tilton have been here. It has rained some. Papa has been down to Mr. Taylor’s to butcher. Mr. Gardner has whitewashed the pantry and kitchen. Our school began today. Ella Thompson is our teacher. It is a nice day. Papa has been over to Meredith Village with apples. Jay and I have been to school.It is a nice day. Papa and mamma stayed over to Mrs. Hillard Sanborn all night last night. She died this afternoon. Jay and I have been down to Grandpas. We have got 9 more chickens. Papa has been over to Laconia. We have all been over to Betsy Robert’s auction. It is a nice day. Both diaries are written in pencil and she never missed a day of writing. Each diary measures 3 x 6 inches and they are in very good condition. Charming look into pioneer life from a young child. Remarkably and very uniquely the diaries are written by both Mr. Grant b. July 7th 1887 and his wife Lelah Shank b. Sept. 3rd 1886. Living in Lagrange Indiana we find the first entry of the first diary proclaims that on January 1st 1908 they have been married one year. They are dedicated diarists who record their daily financials - earnings costs purchases etc. local events and even historical moments in time such as Jefferson's birthday Monroe's birthday and so on. Place names family and friends and clients and daily events are all recorded. Most days they both write their separate activities but if only the one of them writes they always detail the other's actions. Overall Lelah writes about two-thirds to three-quarters. Here are some specifics: Place Names include: Brighton Lima Briton Mongo Brighton Angola Flint and Ft. Wayne. Events include: rabbit hunting pitched quoits hauling wood bad weather and the mail carrier did not come entertained a boil birthing sows and sheep called our home on the telephone '08 paid off the mortgage of $2400.00 '08 paid dog tax Old Settlers Day cutting rye picking whortleberries going to the cider mill working on car a fire that lasted 4-5 days Grant votes for Taft went to Red Cross. On offer is an archive of three 3 composition notebooks and a letter documenting two men John Terreault and Ray Johnson who appears to be the inspired writer of the two who canoe from Montreal to New York and back in 1933. 111 pages with all pages full with writing. Included is a letter from Ray Johnson to Helen Cotes. The letter is 8 pages full and is written after the canoe trip. Ray met Helen in Little Falls NY during the canoe trip back from New York. They continued to correspond and eventually got married and moved to Pickle Lake Canada while Ray worked in the Pickle Creek Gold Mine for awhile. They eventually moved to Carthage NY and then to Manlius NY. These books are a charming relic of the Depression era and a bit of Americana of a time never to be repeated. Both volumes are quite handsome many pages unopened/uncut gilt bright. Both volumes seem to have been exposed to some moisture with stains on Vol. I through to the title page also a little on rear end papers and there is a discoloration along bottom edge of pages up to the Preface and from about page 325 to the end papers; Volume II same as the first. There is no mildew or musty odor. Light rubbing to the leather leather cracked slightly along spine front & back boards not separated; Vol. II has faint stain from the moisture on front. These look much better than they sound. A nice set. Bookplate of George Allison Armour 1898 tipped in. Armour was a member of the Grolier Club a New York City bibliophile society and attended Princeton for one year. He had an extensive book collection at his death. Quantity Available: 1. ‎MEREDITH COLLEGE RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA NC. Very Good. 1937. On offer is the lovely and interesting diary of a young female art student studying at Meredith College in Raleigh North Carolina. Her name is Anne Pateat and she is quite the character describing her life in a comprehensive and lovingly detailed way writing of her many adventures and readings her thoughts on art and shakespeare and a myriad of other ripe topics for a young woman’s mind in school to think over. She is obviously quite the student as evidenced by the fact that she is a member of Silver Shield Honors Society Junior Editor of The Acorn a campus literary magazine member of the English club and Field Hockey team and an avid participator in the Meredith College Crook Hunt in which the Junior Class of which Anne and her friends belong hunts for a crook or shepherd’s staff hidden by the senior class. It is a tradition that has been in Meredith College since 1906 and the diary is filled with numerous attempts to find the crook on campus. “When 10 O’clock P.M. came around almost 6 of us started crooking and we were the usual sorry sights. We walked down the R.R. bend when we came to the highway. Maxie leafed around like a kangaroo and some one in a roadster stopped to find out what the trouble was. He went on when we started tearing back down the tracks. The next gentleman who stopped to investigated backed his car up and sat on the tracks and stared at us for several minutes. We were scared to death at first and ran wildly in all directions - but finally we stared him down - still no crook.” While at school her life is filled with frequent work for her English classes lots of Shakespeare Robert Browning and other formative authors. In July Anne takes an exciting trip across the Atlantic on the famous ‘Queen Mary’ to London Paris and then Edinburgh. “On board the S.S. Queen Mary and we almost didn’t make it! We went down to the dock at 10 to be early for a 12 o’clock sailing and lo and behold the thing pulled out at 10:30! Shudder shudder at the tho’t of missing it! It is quite the most wonderful ship I have ever seen” Her trip across the Atlantic is well and humorously noted and when she arrives in England she writes “the long awaited day is over and the family is together! And what a family! They took peculiar to me and they primped on me because of the way I talk - so it goes. My first impression was that they all looked pale - but they improve on acquiescence and keep me roaring with laughter.” She even takes to calling her family the “thundering herd.” Her trip makes up the last two months of entries in the journal and contains detailed accounts of everything seen and done in the European cities visited. “Boy oh boy oh boy! have we ‘done’ Paris!” The entries stop on August 21 but pick up again September 9th. “I vowed to start this little animal again when school commenced and it did in a big way.” However only two entries were written before it stops again. Finally on September 20 she writes “I’m making another brave attempt at keeping this poor thing alive!” but only a few days later on October 1st she writes her last entry in the book after which she stops writing in the journal for good. The diary as a whole is an absolutely fantastic look into the life of a strong humorous artistic young woman in the last few years before WW2. It’s a fantastic document of Meredith College of pre-war America and Europe and of a wholly unique life. The front and back cover are in good condition showing some scuffing and wear but are still very structurally sound. The pages within are free of major discoloration rips or tears. The handwriting is legible and readable throughout in blue ink. There is some fading of the ink at points but it does not affect legibility. The book is approximately 380 pages in length of which around 300 have writing. OVERALL: VG. Sample text: “Friday May 28 1937. The last exam is over and I’m a senior in College! Wonderful day this afternoon. I went for my final hour in the library and it felt wonderful. Lee took me down to Mac’s for supper and we drove around for a little while. Carl was there for supper and was right much fun.After I came back this P.M. I sat in the course and talked.”; “Friday June 4. Most of this day I have been closeted with Kristen and it’s got me going - this morning I did tear myself away from it long enough to go to town with Pris and buy me some silk to make a suit and 2 patterns - the things will be real pretty when they’re made up. Every time we tried to get stuff to match the blouse for the suit wwe had to bike out to sidewalk with a bolt of cloth to see if it was o.k. By light of day. At 12 we went to the Doctor’s Office and I got stuck with a typhoid shot. The only insult I can see or feel is a sore arm - I guess sleepyness is just my natural state. Pris went to a bridge party at 3 all dolled up in a leg bow hat among other things - and she came home without the Prize. ‘Happy’ has gotten so that she has to be scratched in a very winsome manner - It rained dogs and cats this aft and eve for a while.”; “Tuesday August 10. Boy oh boy oh boy! Have we ‘done’ Paris. This A.M. and aft. we took a conducted tour around the city and ‘did’ Napoleon’s Tomb he’s buried in 6 coffins to prevent desecration saw Heloise and Abelard Musset’s tomb a beautiful memorial to the Dead drove around the exhibition etc. This aft. we went to Notre Dame and saw the exquisite rose windows. There are some cardinal’s hats hanging in the ___ and when they fall from old age the souls of the deceased are supposed to leave purgatory. And this P.M. from 9 until 3 we have done the night life and have we done it! Several cabaret's and ended up at the Moulin Rouge dancing. The floor show there was grand and so was the orchestra. An English girl was the only other girl besides me so we didn’t lack for partners. The Champagne flowed without cease. After the Moulin closed we ended the evening at a street side place with coffee at least I did. The Eng. girl was the only one who spoke French so we all had a charming time.” Background: Anne Poteat Rose 94 born 1911 died Sunday April 24 2011 at the St. Francis Home after a period of declining health. She was born in the Kaifung region of China to her Missionary parents Gordon and Helen Carruthers Poteat. She graduated from the Shanghai American School and then sailed back to the United States to attend college at Meredith College in Raleigh N.C. where she earned her BA in English. Anne then met her family in Oxford England where they were able to tour England and Scotland. When their tour was complete the family returned to Pennsylvania on the Queen Mary. Anne then earned her Master's Degree in English at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1943 she began training with the Red Cross and went to France to work with the troops. She helped out on air bases and followed Gen. Patton's troops through Germany and the Red Ball Express. In 1945 she returned home to Chester Penn. While her father was teaching at Crozer Theological Seminary Anne met Rabon Rose and they later married. Anne and Rabon moved about the country as the ministry called him. They served churches in LaGrange N.C.; Austin Texas; Champaign Ill.; and Vero Beach Fla. In 1955 they moved to New Hampton New Hampshire. They both found teaching positions in schools in the area. Anne taught Senior English and Humanities at Franklin High School for 26 years before retiring. Anne was active within the community participating with the garden club helping with the selections of new books at the Gordon Nash Library and sang with the Pemigewasset Choral Society. On offer is a superb original historical early 18th Century travel journal of three 3 Dutch men Daniel van Alphen P. van Dorp and the writer of the journal Hendrik van Alphen 1708-1764 who travel from Holland to Germany from April 9th 1739 through late summer. Hendrik is listed on Dutch genealogical sites as a 'koopman' or in English a merchant and given the many references that include numbers the approximately 8 x 10 inch very full 133 hand numbered page book is unlike diaries there is little detail of the daily doings but rather Hendrik described landscape and the community where they were how long the journey from one city to another city took and why in some cases the trip took longer than planned. The influence of Daniel van Alphen whom was probably a registrar during the journey is very clear in the journal. On every location that the authors arrived a specific attention is paid to the religious situation in that city or village. Matters such as the number of churches in the city and the friction between the different groups of the church were described. The landscape of the cities are also described with detail and some background information which makes the journal very enigmatic and interesting to wonder the true intent of their visit if one is driven to whimsy! The trip lasted at least from Vollenhove The Netherlands to Hanau Germany. The author even mentions being in Heinheim a few times but this is now most likely known as Heidenheim. That means that they at least covered a distance of 500 kilometers which was travelled over water or by foot. And if the Heidenheim is meant by Heinheim the trip covered at least 750 kilometers. Other places visited include Groningen Friesland Berlin Leipzig Coburg Frankfurt etc. The pages are bound in a somewhat later half leather binding. BIO NOTES2: Daniel van Alphen born on 7 November 1713 and died 16 July 1797 was a well known individual in Leiden the Netherlands. In the year that the journal was written his family was established for more than 200 years in Leiden. His grandfather was even the mayor of Leiden. Van Alpen started studying Literature but he made progress and was assigned as a teacher in Law Leeraar in de Rechten. Shortly afterwards he was promoted to registrar someone supporting the lawyer and preparing the court. Daniel van Alphen also made a contribution to the Dutch literature. In 1755 he published the book Recht der Overheden over kerkelijke persoonen en zaken which discussed the authority of the government over religious figures and matters in the community. ‎BANGOR MAINE ME. Very Good. 1879. On offer is an interesting completely filled 1879 manuscript diary and relic of Bangor Maine handwritten by Joanna S. Eveleth unsigned but identified from other ephemera the free-endpaper has the signature of her father A.S. Eveleth Bangor a hardworking but ill young woman who besides all the everyday chores a 20 something woman might have also taught school. The diary opens with Joanna at normal school taking exams in arithmetic grammar and geography studying a lot fixing her clothes going on an occasional sleigh ride etc. On one page she says School is the only interesting part of my life but a day or so later she complains there is nothing but school and study and nothing wonderful has happened. By mid-February she is summoned home where both parents and several other relatives are ill. From that point on the diary is filled with entries about the local weather various chores around the house visits to and from various friends and relatives letters written and received etc. By the time she's been home for two weeks she has decided to stay at home this spring rather than return to school although Father tries to convince her to return. On March 6 she receives a letter saying 'I was elected to N. Bangor school as teacher. I did not know that such a thing had been thought of'. Until mid-April when school starts she does housework visits friends attends church prayer meetings and sociables and complains of exhaustion. Once school starts Joanna's entries don't change appreciably. She tells nothing about her students or her school day other than such lines as School and nothing else; and 'the day has gone much like all others'. She does however say I'm glad I'm not a dressmaker. I'd rather be a schoolmarm. In addition to teaching doing the usual washing chores sewing dresses for herself and several others and general housecleaning she also writes of going strawberrying or picking apples gathering autumn leaves making a wreath and reading sometimes aloud in the evenings to the boys including Uncle Tom's Cabin. Croquet is a favorite game and she also mentions playing dominoes. Joanna is not in very good health writes frequently of her tiredness and mentions fainting or almost-fainting several times. She's also not particularly cheerful reporting that she spent one of the happiest days of my life walking to the schoolhouse doing something involving music and playing croquet. She deals with two dramatic interludes in typically laconic style noting on 8/11 that 'Oh such a day has past sic. Father went to work but…in an hour…he was back with a broken leg. Both bones below the knee are broken. The Dr. says it is very bad. The neighbors are kind the family pitches in and father is up using crutches in the field by October'. Another major event is reported in typical undramatic Joanna style. She is a master of understatement: 11/18. Snowed all day. Washed. Father and mother came. Uncle Ralph is dead. 11/19. It was a mistake. Uncle is not dead but very low. 11/24. Went downtown. Uncle is dead. He died last Thursday. Funeral is Wednesday. 11/25. Father and Mother went downtown. Uncle's corpse came this morning. Uncle N. and Aunt L. are here. 11/26. The last has been done for uncle. He was buried today. 11/27. Thanksgiving. I work all day and am getting ready to go away on an overnight visit. Again typically Joanna's entry for her 23rd birthday on 9/16 reads: So I'm twenty-three. Have celebrated by teaching all day….The school Committee were in today. Rainy'. This diary presents a poignant picture of the life of a young schoolteacher in Maine. Bangor Northport and other towns are mentioned. It is comforting to know that according to genealogical material available on-line Joanna married William H. Teelingin 1889 when she was 33 and had 2 children. She died in 1911 five years before her son died from a botched surgery when he was thrown from a colt. ‎1880 ORIGINAL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY LEVI HARD A FARMER FROM KENDALL ORLEANS COUNTY NY DOCUMENTING FARMING ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL LIFE‎

‎KENDALL N.Y. ORLEANS COUNTY. Very Good. 1880. On offer is an original diary of Levi Hard from Orleans County showing the life of a well-off farmer in a small New York town in 1880s detailing his day-to-day activities including routine farming operations fighting field blaze and his social life. The diary covers the whole year all pages are densely filled. At the time when the diary was written Levi Hard was about 70 years of age and lived with his wife their daughter and son-in-law lived nearby. They were growing crops fruit and vegetables and kept cows and sheep. Hard continued working himself and was often helped by his son-in-law Hiram and other relatives and neighbors and they often hired help. As many farmers' diaries this one includes records of weather and lists farming activities: "I got up at five or six milked 3 cows strained milk built a fire picked some corn to boil. Took care of Tom a horse and fed the pig. My wife has written a letter to thrashers in Albion" "Hartwell came and we went out to cutting Briers and Brush and weeds." However Levi also writes much about his contacts with local residents and thoroughly describes his correspondence with different people. The family had a piano and family members came to practice and to play. Here is one of the typical entries: "Webster stayed here last night Mart and Emma and wife were here last night. Hiram played on the viol Mart on the piano. Mart drew two loads of barley. I picked some grapes. Took a basket full over to Emma and half bush. peaches". The diary gives an insight to the local farming trends at the time crops production prices and volume of work at the farm and also refers to different local events. Many of the names he mentions can be found in the book "Landmarks of Orleans County New York" by Isaac Signor published in 1894. The diary is a book with brown cover with flap closure. The title page reads: "The Empire State Diary 1880".
