‎1928 - 1929 ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES OF AN ENGLISH ENGINEER'S TIME TIN MINING TIGER HUNTING AND TRAVELING IN SIAM‎

‎SIAM THAILAND SOUTH EAST ASIA. Very Good. 1928. On offer are an interesting pair 2 of 1928 and 1929 original manuscript diaries handwritten by a young English mining engineer named Leslie Arnold Mayo while working in Siam. Using a large page per day 'Roneo Indexed Diaries' he writes approximately 311 entries in the 1928 diary and 235 entries in the 1929 diary ranging from a single line to a full-page usually at least a paragraph or two ending with his return to Dover on 3 October 1929 with occasional entries made while in Europe to the conclusion of the calendar year. The author provides a unique 'yin and yang' look at his time in Asia from the prejudices of a young man of his time and place balance with the topic of the perils of going native; the challenges of mining in contrast with the lure of making one's living abroad particularly in an exotic locale such as Siam. Mayo appears to have no little responsibility managing and working a tin mine near Langsuan then at Kopah in Thailand as he does the books calculates expenses and doles out wages writes daily reports some with drawings manages equipment repairs and hires the Siamese and Chinese 'coolies'. Mayo answers directly to the Superintendent of Mines and in 1928 received a salary increase. He is also in frequent communication with the Governor and even socializes with him. Beginning on New Year's Day of 1928 we understand he has been in Thailand for some time as he is comfortably situated in a bungalow at the Nai Hoot Juita tin mine in Langsuan Siam and he may have started his job there as early as the summer or autumn of 1926. Mayo does a great job bringing the essence of his life in Siam to the reader as he not only details his work but also his play and other activities: the journals contain many stories of encounters with tigers game hunting the miner's opinions of his contemporaries in the industry as well as the hired hands minor mishaps such as an injury to his knee a weekend spent in Penang and the sorted affairs of his colleagues. Mayo contemplates purchasing options essentially licences in other regions as well as investing in shares in the Australian owned mining company 'Huai Yot' which was involved in gold mining in Malaysia. Other large Australian companies such as 'Nai Hoot' are mentioned and interestingly Australians were the first to introduce dredges into tin mining in Siam in 1907 creating an influx of Western firms. Here are some snippets: "Chinese hari bazaar the coolies decided to do no work because I wouldn't give them a full day for 1/2 day's work. Had some trouble over sacking two." "Took F.R. round the mines dredge & power station & listened to what he had to say. He is a decent fellow a Scot from Edinburgh." "I went down to Tung Song Suratthani for money. Oscar Dorban got in. I was very pleased to see him & we discussed boxing especially his method of drying the samples & weighing them instead of finding their volume by displacement." ". 10 o'clock when I got my money from the bank. Caught the 11 am train to Ronpibon where Langdon met me & drove me out. White was on the train going to Haad Yai" "Received a letter from the OCPD Batu Gajah Office of the Consumer Protection Board inquiring about my pistol he wants me to apply for an export licence - nine months after I left the state." "Took a gang of coolies out to repair a broken bridge on the Langsuan road. had a beer & biscuits. Lazy in the afternoon & then went shooting. I bagged 4 with 6 shots." "A most energetic day. Went to the bore first thing & on my return struck the pipe line so decided to go up to the intake - some walk in all about 10 miles." "I can calmly accept the state of affairs - this life is quite bearable if one has enough work to do during the day. Today I was up late and spent most of the morning with the coolies shifting the dynamo field to the store. Siamese get my goat!" "The tractor with dynamo armature got stuck in the mud just outside the min & I with four coolies waited at Quentin Mooi till 1:30 PM for it. Got the tractor started after much trouble & watched it for 1/4 mile & then went ahead in the lorry from Q.H.H. with some motor starters. the lorry wheel came nearly off so had to walk the rest & send for a new wheel. the two trucks sent yesterday could not be used. they have no brakes. " "Sacked all the Siamese coolies in the morning through not turning up yesterday noon." "The governor called me into his house & gave me tea. Received my provisions from Bangkok I like the American cheese." "Went into Langsuan to answer a few questions of the 'Superintendant of Mines' - all over in fifteen minutes" "Met Clark in Langsuan he has just returned from a prospecting trip of the Chumphon district. " "Paid off my boring coolies luckily I had about 500 spare in the safe. Made lists of the boring tools in store. went for a walk to the dredge on the No.3 mine hole the power house & No.5 mine." "Brown from Nawong Pat is down here he is going to take Jay's place at P.S.H. Jay was nearly murdered on Wed. night at 9:30 o'clock by coolies who got into his room they held his woman & hit him on the head with an axe she escaped & rescued Jay & they had a fight but the coolies got them again & attempted to cut jay's throat - they made a cut 3" long." ".Imagine being tied to a black woman like Cundy - ugh. And now she has adopted a Siamese kid!!! Of course she looks after him well & is I truly believe faithful.I could never do it - pray to God that reason always controls my passion at any rate in that respect."; travels on company business to Penang and elsewhere in Malaya when investigating mining options and taking bores ".The journey took just under three hours & about half the way I rode owing to broken bridges & the amount of water on the road. The cart rocked & swayed over the rutty road & there was an unpleasant smell from the oxen. The driver - an Afgan - was certainly the most villainous looking man I have ever met he was a large & tall man wearing only khaki shorts & a dirty white shirt with a coloured handkerchief at his throat & an automatic on his hip. At Behor I stayed with Dawson - Aussie - & Agar - Irish - his assistant. The former owns a semi lode - semi alluvial mine. They live like natives the animals run all over the "bungalow" coolies walk in at will with their hats on - but it was better than living in a Chinese shop."; a giant iguana shot in his garden ".I've had it skinned the Siamese are having a feast and I shall give it to Mum to make shoes of."; tiger predations ".Clarke was greatly excited.& decided to set four spring guns but some Chinese came in the morning & cleared the undergrowth & built a machane a raised platform used in tiger hunting."; ants in his trousers ".Scratching all morning."; drinking and its attendant nightmares in one being shot by a coolie and set upon by a Chinese whore; his reading Hardy Dickens Hugo Anatole France Zane Grey et al. etc. Note: We list separately a 1932 diary written by Mayo detailing his time surveying in Southern Rhodesia. ‎NUGGET COLORADO GILPIN COUNTY. Very Good. 1896. On offer is a super archive of manuscript letters and a diary handwritten by Almon W. Howes who lived in Nugget Colorado as a gold miner. Mr. Howes does a great job describing his life and works in short entries over 63 pages that starts on April 6 1896 and ends on January 31 1898. Along with the journal there are also about 20 persoonal and business letters and documents that were received by him from various relatives and business associates some of the envelopes have a Nugget postmark that further flesh out and add depth to history of this miner's life. He begins on April 6 1896: "Began work for the Ohio K M & M Co. Made a relocation of The Little Lizzie and called it the Oakland. Lost my watch on the way over to the Louisa. Shoveled about 3 ft of snow off the top of the Louisa and cleaned snow out of shaft. Sunk 8 ft in snow to find dump of Oakland. Did not find it. Fine day." He worked on the Louisa shaft until 5/7/96 then started working on the Oakland which he says is 2'6" x 6' on the bottom. He is sending samples and snaking logs for the cabin. Here some more snippets and observations from the entries: took quartz out of the Oakland and white iron; Several other outfits coming in; They had to leave their cabin. Miner's meeting in Nugget; Living in a camp. Big storm w/houses blown down. Maud Estelle prospected for lead found honeycomb quartz sent a sample; E have not got a ten foot face yet; Finished the M & made another one called the Loyd Lee; Had the Loyd Lee surveyed working on cabin again; No food for a week other than bread and beans; Talking about the Topsy Mabel & Piedmont & Ingram claims taking measurements; Went to the Hoober Knocker Boomerange & Plateau mine; Cut timber to build a water closet; Located the Blue Betty lode. It is a relocation of the Scotch Lassie; Located the Trout Lode; Started working on the road; measured the Mabel measurements are listed Mabel is his claim; Elections working on his blacksmith shop; temperature is 15 below zero; working on tunnel again excavating; put off a shot explosion; went to Denver & had piece of steel removed from his eye paid $1.85 to record deed; back working in the tunnel; cleaned out my location hole on Loyd Lee; Trout Lode was surveyed & recorded $9.25 always working on tunnel; broke rock in tunnel; Got knocked out w/powder smoke; went to Loveless tunnel; Has been making timbers almost every day for some time; Went to see Placer; went fishing at Jim Peak Lakes; Went up Montana Hill & went to see the Victor; Fishing at Tellers Lake; Helping friend build a cabin; Begins work on the Mabel; Paid for Republican postage; Someone threatened to have him arrested if he did any more work on the Mabel; worked on the Mabel; Got a receipt from the Republican someone left on the stage; was sick for over a week; The Republication started today; started working on the Topsy; began a new hole in the Topsy; managed post office & store for someone who left town for a while; having trouble finding the lead in the third hole; Bad storm cabin shaking down to the foundation; his father died on Christmas Day; there was a forest fire; received a letter telling him to be ready to pull out for Alaska as soon as he gets word; Will start for Denver on Thursday to head for Klondyke. The book is 11 3/4" long and 5 1/4" wide and each of the 63 pages are full and there are a few more pages in the back of expenses. Lucy is the granddaughter of Ms. Anderson. Grandma Anderson Marietta wrote this diary to give to Lucy's other grandmother Grandma Barnfield. What we get is a moment in time capturing the 1911 high-spirited hi-jinks cast Lucy as a 'Pippi Longstocking' of Upstate New York and of course the entire essence of the family their events and their milestones. Humorous and entertaining Grandma Anderson does a wonderful job. Lucy sews balls of carpet rags. ‎HARVARD BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA WISCONSIN. Very Good. 1911. On offer is the superb original manuscript journal and diary of Prof. Edgar C. Knowlton 1890-1978 noted linguist translator and author who in intimate detail writes of his life opinions and observations as an undergrad student at Harvard University living at Stoughton Hall. He is a super diarist who in this large page a day book dated January 1 1911 to December 31 1911 writes and over-writes pages on his friends and classmates his opinions on general society manners philosophy books movies social mores and much much more. This is an intimate peek at pre World War I America from the point of view of an intensely intelligent observer of himself the human condition and those around him. Knowlton also records his thoughts and ideas on various books and topics that he was reading or studying for his coursework at Harvard. Researchers and historians of the era would be hard pressed to find a more frank and honest diarist. BIO NOTES: Biography of Edgar C. Knowlton Edgar C. Knowlton was born on 19 Sept 1890 at Manchester New Hampshire the son of George and Alice Knowlton. His father was a druggist. Knowlton obtained his B.A. from Harvard University in 1912 his M.A. in 1913 and his Ph.D. in 1918. His "Potter Prize" dissertation was titled "Nature as an Allegorical Figure." After his schooling he entered the army and served in France during World War I. Knowlton began his teaching career in the public schools at Manchester where he is found living with his parents in the 1920 Census. He later worked at Lafayette College followed by stints at the University of Illinois Ohio Wesleyan and summer sessions at the University of Texas then at Stanford University and finally for many years in the University of Wisconsin system starting at the old La Crosse State College. He began teaching at La Crosse in 1935 the school later became part of the University of Wisconsin system. Knowlton had a reading knowledge of German French Latin Greek Danish Dano-Norwegian Welsh Old Irish Spanish and Italian. He spoke German and French. He wrote a book entitled An Outline of World Literature as well as contributions to a dozen and half books and periodicals. He also published translations of old Welsh poetry and was the co-author of a freshman English textbook. In 1920 Knowlton married Mildred Mason Hunt at Fall River Massachusetts and had a son Edgar C. Knowlton Jr born 1921 in Ohio while his father was teaching at Wesleyan. Edgar junior also became an academic teaching at the University of Hawaii. He was very fluent in languages as well proficient in even more than his father. He also became a widely published author and eventually a Professor Emeritus of European Languages at the University of Hawaii. A Festschrift in his honor "East Meets West" was published in 1988 by the University of Hawaii where it is stated that Prof. Knowlton was fluent in eleven languages with a working knowledge of fifteen others. Edgar Sr. appears to have retired from Wisconsin University La Crosse. He died while living at Wisconsin in November of 1978 at the age of 88 years and 1 month. For the first 112 pages the entries take up the entire pages though Knowlton is not bound by convention and carries on from one day to the next if he needs more writing space afterwards they become less full with the last third of the volume having brief entries and November and December very brief entries. Each page is one day. April 14th 1902 of Valmont Colorado. Harold rarely misses a day in the fifteen years represented in the three books from 1915 to 1929 where we see a young studious out going boy-next-door grow from 12 - 13 years old to 28 from a boy playing Bear and counting eggs for mom to a young teen taking motors apart playing sports fishing and chores to a loving husband with his sweetie Rachel to come home to and play board games at Christmas. Harold goes on even at a very young age to gain some success with his inventions and has articles published in the magazine POPULAR MECHANICS. On offer is a sensational original December 30th 1940 - December 31st 1941 manuscript diary handwritten by a Sowerby Bridge England native Private Harry Wilson Winn ID No. 7627412 R.A.O.C . Royal Army Ordnance Corps that served with the famed 7th Division 'Desert Rats'. This extraordinary first-hand account by a dedicated and keen observer is jammed packed with historic entries describing life and service in North Africa and the Middle East from Haifa to Cairo to Tobruk Libya. From the mundane sometimes difficult sometimes fun filled life of a private in the Army to the unique other worldly matters of eating camel steaks to the intense descriptions of bombing raids enemy attacks deprivations and tragic loss are all encapsulated in this diary. He tells of the difficulties of living in a foreign environment suffering heat sores requiring a week in the hospital to the normality of going to the canteen for coffee and breakfast. He also mentions friends as they move or return or are convalescent he notes the native peoples and the other 'boys' like the New Zealanders and Aussies. He keeps up on the global picture of the War noting German movements politics Russia and American involvement and so much more. Truly one of the most packed diaries we have seen in a compact 6 x 3¾ inch book. Historians and researchers of the North African campaigns will be hard-pressed to find a more detailed observant and charming writer. He can be oh so droll: "News reports…Abyssinian trouble is finished. Ahem!" or punching the air in glee: "Orders say battle dress will not be worn until Dec 12th. Oh Yeah!" ‎LAFAYETTE INDIANAPOLIS INDIANA IN. Very Good. 1909. On offer are two original handwritten manuscript diaries dated January 1st 1909 through May 23rd 1911. While the female author is unidentified a casual reading suggests the she is from central Indiana referring to Jefferson Mulberry Stockwell LaFayette Indianapolis Colfax and Attica etc. This diary is over 300 pages in a notebook style diary wherein the author details the hard working life of an Indiana farming family. It appears to be a very large operation being cattle horses sheep cash crops lumber beekeeping and all manner of fowl. They seems to be specialists in ducks naming several exotic species. A close reading should deduce the author as there are many clues which a local historian or genealogist will treasure in this great bit of early 20th century Americana. Making soap summer kitchens raising bees county fairs butter churning medicine men peddlers are just a few of the duties visits and work day efforts of the writer. Here are some snippets: 1909 "February 24th Cloudy colder. Rained in the morning turning to snow. Wind in W. very windy. Ground freeing in evening. I cleaned lamps. Mother and I cleaned the attic in morning. R. went to F. to make final settlement. I looked after the stock. Helped R. with feeding in evening." "May 27th Cloudy sun shone a little. Wind in S.E. Changed to S. and W. then S. Sprinkled a little in evening. We finished ironing. Mother churned. I cleaned stairs and vestibule. Washed bedroom windows and side. Titled 'SHUT OFF FROM DIVING 1923-1945 The Ramblings of a Plumber' the book was written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer CERA or a plumber as he jokingly called himself on a number of submarines. Leslie writes in his intro: 'The material used in this story has been extracted from diaries written during the period covered. It is thus chronological and consequently rather disjointed in its presentation. It will have little interest except to submariners and probably not a lot for those who are or were. It contains no excitements but is an attempt to portray how one submariner enjoyed life met and overcame problems enjoyed the companionship of some wonderful friends - if the contents are mainly connected with the engine room department that of course was my particular concern but we were a team from the youngest seaman to the CO and no one could have wished for a more satisfying life.' ‎LAKE OF MEADOWS PENNSYLVANIA BINGHAMPTON NEW YORK. Very Good. 1936. On offer is an interesting original Depression era manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified woman who lives in or near the Lake of Meadows Pennsylvania area but she does write quite a bit about going to Binghamton New York. There are many many clues as to her identity which local historians and collectors should assuredly be able to confirm. It also appears that her family owns a group of cottages on the Lake and rents them out in the summer. The diary has a few entries for 1935 all of 1936 save for 16 days and there are 3 entries for 1937. At the outset we learn that her father is heading in for surgery. After some ups and downs we learn that on February 20th 1936 he dies from heart failure. After that she spends much of her time working on the cottages traveling to Canada for vacations and then in the fall having to repair one or several of the cottages as they had a fire. Plus they get a good deal of property damage during the big flood of 1936 and many of the entries are about this event. Though the diary is a small pocket size diary measuring about 2 ¾" x 5 ½" her writing is small and she paints a super picture of her life and times. Here are some snippets: 1935 "December 29th - 31st Papa was examined at hospital Sunday. Yesterday took x-rays to Parks….Decided to go to hospital tomorrow….Leon took papa and Mrs. Picket to hospital. I stayed with mama. Cleaned Mrs. Pickett's room. Cold and snow everywhere….Papa operated on for ulcers of the stomach. Leon came to take mama and me to Sayre. Left at eight. Were there at 9:00. Operation lasted until eleven……Operation successful." 1936 "January 28th Ironed in the morning. Mary Pratt came in afternoon. King Georges funeral broad casted from 4 o'clock until 9. Very cold snow all day." "February 16th Took Grace and Laura May with us when we went out home. Girls rode down hill. Papa gradually loosing." "February 20th Papa died at 11 o'clock tonight. Heart failed. Mr. Ryan took me out. Walked up the glen. Called power of attorney. Left at 3 o'clock. Roads very dangerous." "February 23rd Wilson and several called. Flowers begin to come. Uncle Stewart and Stanley took cement to cemetery. Stanley got cement of Raymond. Leon took Uncle Stewart Helen mama and I to Athens to see papa at the undertaking rooms." The next several days are about the funeral "March 11th & 12th Leon and I went to Lake of Meadows to see about cottages. Snow banks still quite high around Warren Center. Water over roads……29 inches of water in cellar. Fire out. Pretty cold and freezing all day." "March 15th & 18th Water in church basement. No SS or church. Services were broadcast from church. Went out home. Took Grace. William Rogers and Bowen called….Rain. Iona and I moved all day. Men moved feed to second floor. 7 inches water on our house floor. Everything flooded. No telephone." "March 20th & 21st First train thru at 9 o'clock. Track still covered with water. Manning's went home. Took John up to Glovers in boat. Rowed up as far as Glovers….Began scrubbing water off of floor. ‎OCEAN LINER 'MOLTKE' EUROPE. Very Good. 1907. On offer is an original 1907 handwritten travel diary representing 60 handwritten pages of a trip to Europe on board the ocean liner "Moltke". Research has determined the diary was written by 18 year old John Vance Lauderdale Jr. while on a trip with his mother his Aunt Mary and a Mr. Lane. The diary was originally purchased at the John Vance Lauderdale famed surgeon Civil War veteran and author - bio notes to follow - estate and written references buying a present for Marjorie his sister make the son most certainly author. There is also a mention of him while there in Europe and he writes about going to the "Brooklyn Daily Eagle" newspaper office while in Paris which appears that our author was purchasing a "hometown" paper to catch up on all the local news. 1907 "Tuesday 28 May At 11:35 a.m. on the above date the Moltke of the H.A.P. A. G. which means Hug all pretty American girls started with her handsome passengers for Naples. We passed Bay Ridge and saw for the last time in a good while the boat house of the C.A.C. There are many pretty girls aboard and although I have not met any yet I expect to. I was much surprised to see the course we took on going out. We kept straight out of the harbor as if we were going to Atlantic Highlands. When we got almost to Sandy Hook we turned at right angles and then went due east. It was not very long before I had been all on the ship from stem to stern. I got talking with all the stewards who could speak English and had quite a confab with the Macaroni man. Our stateroom although an inside one is all to the good. Sitting in the steamer chairs is to slow for me. At about 11:00 p.m. I went to bed and slept bum. The sea was very smooth." Wednesday 29th I awoke and found that I could not take my first salt water bath until 9:30. I fooled around until then and when the time came I was on hand. Gee it was fine. Played shuffle board and met the Morrel Girls. One of the steerage tried to jump overboard but was prevented. Sea was choppy." "Tuesday 12th At 8 o' we took carriages and drove to the station where we took electric tramways to the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. Then by taking a drive of 10 minutes we landed at Cooks Funicular RR. This took us to the laboratory of the observatory. As there was nothing to see more from the top of the crater than what we could see so we did not ascend. Had a very nice lunch at the hotel and came down the mountain at 12:35. Drove to the station and took a tram for Pompeii. Did Pompeii and saw the dead bodies coated with lava. Arrived home at 7:00 Had dinner…." Rome Hotel Central Old Roma "Monday 18th In the morning Mr. O and I went up to the hall of St. Peters It was a long hot climb but well worth the trouble. We could see the Med. Sea and all of the surrounding country. After that went to the shops but did not buy anything……Leave for Florence tomorrow." Venice "Thursday 21st At 10:40 we left Florence for Venice. On the way to the station Mr. Lane had a fainting spell but soon got over it. We had the hottest filthiest ride on the train I ever had in my life. It most did me up. At 7:20 we reached Venice and were conveyed to our Hotel Rome in gondolas. I think they are fine. After dinner we took a walk to St. Mark's Square heard the band play and then took a gondola for an hour. There is a beautiful moon and I had the time of my life. Gosh how I wished for a nice looking girl. I would like to spend my days here with the right one." Milan Geneva Montreux Palace Hotel "Thursday 27th At the Montreux. Took a trolley ride and left on the 1:11 boat for Geneva. Stayed at the Montreux Palace Hotel which cost 7000 francs. Had beautiful rooms. The sail up Lake Geneva was superb. Arrived at Geneva at 4:30. Had a swim in the lake and enjoyed it very much. After dinner went to vaudeville and saw many new sights to bed at 12:30. At 5:00 in the afternoon had a swim." Bern Interlaken Lucerne Munich "July 7th Went to church not getting there until it was almost out being unable to find it. At noon saw the soldiers drill in front to the police. Beat our own soldiers to pieces. After lunch wrote some letters and went to a place called Volks Gardens. A young Coney Island. Saw how the Germans spend their Sundays…." Vienna "Saturday 13th At 5:50 I was awakened and got dressed and my bag was packed at 6:30. Had breakfast and left the hotel and Vienna or Wein at 8:15. We had a long trip of 11 hours from 8:05 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Played cards and read the entire book Jerry Jr. It did not seem as long a trip as it might have for I found much to amuse myself with. We are at the Hotel Union and I am in my room waiting for 10:10 p.m. to come when I am due in the bath room. I do not care much about traveling in the foreign railroads. Had a rotten meal in the wagon Restaurant or dining car." Dresden Berlin Mayene Cologne Amsterdam "Thursday 25th We took the train for the Hagen and reached there about 3:15. As soon as we arrived Mrs. F. D. and I hiked out to Scheveninging the famous watering place. The water was quite cold but we had a fine time. The bathing houses are on wheels and while undressing one is pulled out into the ocean where he is to swim. No walking the beach. In the evening the whole dam party went and it was not much fun for us." The Hague Antwerp Brussels Paris "Tuesday 31st .arrived in the gayest city Paris of Europe about 5:13. All our luggage had to go through custom house and it detained us quite a little while. The hotel is very large and my room is on the 5 top floor 283 steps from the lift by actual count." "Monday 6th Awoke at 7:25 put on some of my clothes and have been making up my back notes. After breakfast went with ma and Aunt Mary and we went to the office of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. They are well situated on one of the main streets and they gave us a copy of yesterday's paper….hot as hell here under the roof." "Wednesday 8th In the morning I spent most of my time in the office of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle office. Read all about the fire down at Long Beach. Yesterday I met Florence Morrison again I believe she's also from Brooklyn……" London "Monday 13th Went and bought father a rain coat. Then I went to London Tower again and the Tower Bridge. Crossed London Bridge on foot and went up on top of the Fire Monument. After lunch went to Whole Sales Leather store and brought a fine dress suit case. Bought Mr. Lane his presents a gold case and cigarette mouth piece." The entries suddenly stop on July 16th with them still being in London. After that one finds three pages of a handwritten poem that seems to be a collaboration of past experiences and also his present experiences on board the Moltke. It sounds like he is writing it for a girl back home. At one point in the poem he says "poor John" and he very well could mean himself. This is a great European travel diary even without the historical family significance. The cover is really not in good condition at all poor in fact but the pages are clean and tight to the binding. It measures about 4" x 5 ¾". There is also the original pencil that came with the diary. BIO NOTES: "John Vance Lauderdale was born in Sparta N.Y. in 1832. At 20 he went to work as a druggist's clerk in New York City. He pursued the occupation for several years in both New York and Cleveland. He completed his medical thesis in 1862 and from April to August 1862 he served as a contract surgeon in the U.S. Army's Western theatre. From August of 1862 until 1864 he served as a physician on the staff of Bellevue Hospital in New York City. In March of 1864 he accepted a contract position of Acting Assistant Surgeon Department of the Pacific. He received orders to Utah and served at Fort Bridger. He joined the regular army in 1866. He married Josephine Lane in 1880 and honeymooned in Europe. The Lauderdale's spent four years at Fort Sully in the Dakota Territory. The couples first a daughter was born there in 1885. Tragically she died a short time later. Their second child Marjorie Lane Lauderdale was born 1886 and the third John Vance Lauderdale Jr. was born in 1889. While assigned to Fort Ontario in Oswego NY Major Lauderdale was ordered to report to Pine Ridge Agency South Dakota to help care for the wounded from what is now known as the Battle of Wounded Knee. He retired in 1896. In 1897 the family moved into their new home on 84th street in Brooklyn New York. In 1913 his wife Josephine Lane died. John Vance Lauderdale died in 1932 the oldest retired officer in the U.S. Army. He was a man of many interests. He had an avid interest in Natural History. He collected fossils viewed comets conducted experiments in chemistry and lectured on anatomy. He was an ardent amateur photography and artist. His life from his letters and journals are the subject of two books; "The Wounded River The Civil War Letters of John Vance Lauderdale M.D." and "After Wounded Knee; Correspondence of Major and Surgeon John Vance Lauderdale While Serving with the Army Occupying the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation 1890-1891." ‎1885 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A BOSTON BASED STUDENT COURT REPORTER SERIOUS HIGH WHEEL PENNY FARTHING BICYCLIST AND FUTURE EDUCATOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION‎

‎BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS NEW YORK BANGOR MAINE. Very Good. 1885. On offer is a fascinating piece of 1885 handwritten manuscript Americana being a diary by a young man who appears to be the son of a ship owner of increasing commerce and a detailed look at a serious high wheel bicyclist. The diary begins in New York on January 1st when he apparently arrived with the Bark Haydn Brown of Boston which his father had part ownership. He writes about the Bark going into dry-dock being towed to 31st pier in New York and loading oil. He most of his time New York and particularly Brooklyn and attends theatre opera and other events. Watches "100's thousands skating on the ice" at Central Park. From New York he sails on the Fall River Line steamer Providence and arrives in Newport Rhode Island then takes boat for Boston his home. He appears to be grooming himself to be an educated gentleman and athlete. He takes lessons in German from the Berlitz School dancing lessons classes at Tuft's and plays polo. In April he begins work as a court reporter. Our author is keen on keeping fit and begins working out at a gymnasium. In June he goes to work at the W&N RR Co. in Worcester Mass. He also gets involved with going to sports events racing. He begins to intersect shorthand characters in his entries. In August our writer gets into high wheel bicycling. He buys a Royal Mail 58 inch bicycle for $140 another clue to his financial status given the cost of the high wheel is approximately 6 months of the average worker's pay at the time and starts riding all over the Boston area noting some remarkable times. To the Point of Pines in Saugus Chestnut Hill Allston. He rides to Dedham and then all the way to Attleboro. He goes up to Searsport Maine and rides around there as well as going to the skating rink. He and a friend took their high wheel bikes on board the steamer Cambridge bound for Belfast but she ran aground so they rode the rest of the way to Belfast. Watches a baseball game between "The Duffers" and "Muffore Comics". Returned home of the steamer Penobscot. In September at auction his father buys shares in the Bark Abbie Carver of Boston. Our boy seems to spend all his time riding his bicycle over considerable distances. In one entry Sept 17th he records riding: " .Lewis & I started for Waltham at 2:25. Got there at 3:15. Rode back after a little business of ¾ of an hour to City of Waverly Belmont Arlington Cambridge. Turned back & went to Allston and from there in Milton Brighton rode home making Gym at 5:30. Making 28 miles in 2 h 15 minutes". At the end of Sept. He leaves Boston for New York to take charge of teaching at the Gymnasium at Sing Sing. He returns to Boston in mid October via Fall River steamer Pilgrim. He evidently is on a career of being a Gym teacher and he talks about teaching "the apparatus". He goes to other cities in this capacity: Norwalk Conn. and Bangor Maine where he sets up the apparatus and heads up classes. He also meets Congressmen and other higher social strata persons. He ends his daily entries at Bangor where he is employed at the Gymnasium and the last entries most interestingly are written in shorthand. In addition he keeps a detailed record his expenses for the year. At the top of the list is his high wheel bicycle in which he gives detailed description. Also he kept a detailed record of his bicycle rides by date distance and length. This pocket diary lacks its covers but otherwise G overall and measures 4 ¾ almost 3 inches.
