‎1943 ORIGINAL FASCINATING MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A MIAMI BASED WAR DEPARTMENT MILITARY SECRETARY DEALING WITH OFFICERS ENGINEERS AND TAKING PRISONER OF WAR DEPOSITIONS‎

‎MIAMI FLORIDA FL. Good. 1943. On offer is a rather unique original World War II notebook diary handwritten by an unidentified Military secretary who went to work for the War Department Miami Beach Military Law Section 1943 - 45. A later 1952 entry mentions that he was bitten by a spider and his blood vessels collapsed in his arm and he had "2½ years of trouble". The journal is a real hodgepodge of writings from daily activities to notes regarding receiving Mein Kampf various Captains Majors U.S. Post Engineers Officer's Candidate School AAF Security and Intelligence Division at Albion Hotel taking POW depositions and more. The author often appears very judgmental and has some rather prejudiced opinions. He reports about U.S. Navy taken Hotel Everglades July 30th 1942 and the following day they are ordered to get out Miami Beach Law section asst. director of academic training investigations U.S post engineers OCS Library moves to San Antonio takes depositions for Security and Intelligence Division at Albion Hotel POW Depositions. People he worked for Major Kriens Capt. Thos. E. Anthony Col. Wood Stephen J. Stephens - Civ. Per. Dir. Capt. R. R. Richards Capt. Wendell Busk Major Denver Capt. Grove's investigation Lt. Ludwig. Places mentioned Albion Hotel Hotel Everglades Miami Colonial Hotel Vanderbilt OCS Library. Later we read he then moves to Miami residing at 677 N.W. 99 St. and working for American Express. Wife's name Rita mentions Fedelle Emma and Donald but no mention of his own name. In total there are 40 pages with writing. The flip style note pad was designed to be used then the pages were torn off daily. The top page is detached but present. The pages are newsprint delicate in areas ink and pencil writing some pages have surface wear. A few entries in shorthand. Diary is in wonderful note pad with beautiful cover image. The note pad base is metal and the embossed cover is leather with gold overlay and metal hinges with wear. 3" x 5 ½" x 1". ‎1935 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF ONE MAN'S DESPERATE DEPRESSION ERA JOB AT ONE OF THE MOST REMOTE PLACES IN AMERICA‎

‎CAPE SARICHEF ALASKA. Good. 1935. On offer is an interesting original 1935 manuscript diary handwritten by a hard working single young man named George R. Wilson we believe who lived somewhere near Saginaw or Flint Michigan but whose diary reveals an utterly unique experience of working at one of the most remote jobs on the planet. Rather sparsely written with about one third of the diary having entries George wrote of his attempts to find work in 1935 at the height of the Depression Era and the temporary jobs he managed to get. He worked for the Michigan Unemployment Census the Emerging Relief Administration the Durant Hotel as a house detective the Federal Housing Administration and had other odd jobs. He carefully noted in the diary the number of hours he worked and the salary he earned. But it is George's good fortune to receive a job offer July 4th when he received a letter from Ketchikan asking if he would accept a position as 2nd assistant at the Scotch Gap Lighthouse in Alaska at a salary of $1560. per annum. The Cape Sarichef Light was the most western in the Northern hemisphere as well as the most isolated. The station closed from Dec 1st to March 1st because the Bering Sea was frozen. Because of the isolation civilians who worked there were given a full year vacation after 3 years of duty and the Coast Guard members were rotated after one year. In 1933 it was said that one of the keepers had a breakdown because of the isolation. Only a few trappers could get through to the station in the harsh winter months. On July 17 the author notes 'July 17 Rec'd letter from Ketchikan stating I had been nominated for 2nd ass't at Cape Sarichef also finger print form.' On July 28 the author left Flint MI for Bellingham Washington where he boarded the SS "North King" for Cape Sarichef on August 1. He made many stops along the way and noted these and the route in his diary. He occasionally worked loading canned salmon on the ship. On Aug 6th he was given the oath of office by the Captain of the tender "Hemlock". While anchored off Kodiak the author made the following entry: 'Aug 14.Anchored off Kodiak at 6:00 AM. Tied up at cannery about 1:00 PM. Visited Russian Orthodox Church. Kodiak was settled about 1774. Talked with Charles Madsen noted hunter game warden and guide. A Kodiac bear was killed 5 miles from Kodiak which was 13 1/2 ft long and weighed 2255 lb. A bear killed by Madsen was 5 ft around the neck. The way we came to Kodiak is about 1700 miles from Bellingham.' After a trip of three weeks the author arrived at Cape Sarichef on August 21st: Left Scotch Gap at 11:30 AM and reached Cape Sarichef about 1:30 PM. A.I. Sutherland keeper George C Francis 1st Asst. We are in Lat 54 35' 50" and long. 164 56' 02". This light was built in 1903. It is a 3rd order light gas mantle and is 185 ft above high tide. Lee Harpole was keeper leaving today. Sutherland gets $1800 and Francis $1620. After his arrival at Cape Sarichef the author made occasional short entries. He wrote of: the arrival of the mail boat "Star" on various days; receiving a mackinaw and other clothing he had ordered; visits from two trappers in the area Fred Webber and Exel Samuelson; seeing caribou once seeing 62 at one time; trapping foxes; closing the station at midnight on Nov 30th not to reopen until Mar 1; picking up mail at Scotch Gap; a few daily activities - getting hair cut washing taking pictures eating lbs of flaxseed; On Dec 29 the author made the following entry: Began misty rain about 3 PM. ‎SUN VALLEY CAMP SUNBURY PENNSYLVANIA. Good. 1942. On offer is a fascinating manuscript relic of World War II pilot training and home front activity being a handwritten diary and journal of an unidentified American serviceman. In a beautiful inscribed September 30 1942 as a gift leather 9 x 6 inch book with gilt stamped cover and spine treatment and 5 bands on the spine the author in precise hand writes from October 3 1942 through to June 1 1944 the mundane personal needs such as being robbed having his tonsils out a party at the White House and of course his pilot training at Sun Valley Camp in Sunbury Pennsylvania and then to New York Scranton Waco Texas and back to Sunbury then Camp Upton. We also note that he mentions his 6th anniversary June 24th 1943. Here is a snippet: "Arrived at "Sun Valley Camp" in Sunbury Pa. at six this evening. It was a beautiful day and altho' war regulations required a 35 M.P.H. speed the driving did not seem tedious. Of particular note was the booming war industries enroute and the mile long freight trains bearing tanks guns and other war material. The camp was formerly C.C.C. and in it's day it won the prize for being the best in the country. The mountain slopes from the back of our barrack and a beautiful ski run ends at the door. Sunbury is typically small town nestling in a valley between two branches of the Susquehanna River and completely surrounded by mountains. The valley is ideal for flying with many large level fields suitable for emergency landings. Lex Hart and I wandered about town this evening a bit. The prospects for any activity at this time seem remote - time will tell. We may fly tomorrow - weather permitting - from now on we live for the weather." The book ends with a note: "Back to Gulfport after a perfect furlough. ‎1943 - 1945 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING ONE SAILOR'S SERVICE IN THE US NAVY ABOARD THE STORIED USS JACK MILLER‎

‎ABOARD THE USS JACK MILLER SOUTH PACIFIC. Good. 1943. On offer is a super archive of original manuscripts photographs and documents handwritten and compiled by William Clement Dunn who served in the United States Navy from September 21 1943 to October 1945 aboard the renowned USS Jack Miller. The archive is comprised of a photo album handwritten 'My Life in the Service' diary a four 4 page detailed list of the travels of the Jack Miller a hard cover notebook in which he took notes during his training a super United States silk flag with 46 stars and a piece of a larger flag which we believe had been the flag flown by the USS Jack Miller and lastly news releases during his tour of duty caricatures done by a friend on military stationary and other assorted papers. The diary has his complete service record lists of buddies and 160 pages of dated entries describing his experiences. The entries start July 28 1943 and end October 29 1945. He describes boot camp "the beginning of the end of individualism" and a 16 week electronics course. He then went to Houston Texas and was assigned to the then newly commissioned ship the USS Jack Miller. In May of 1944 he went on a shake down cruise and wondered whether they would head east or go through "the ditch" Panama Canal. They headed west and travelled extensively throughout the Pacific Theatre. The photo album includes three 3 large photos and over 100 shots of life on the ship equipment he worked with people he knew and places he docked. There are also photos of the signing of the armistice with the Japanese and photographs of the signature page signed by MacArthur and the Japanese. The pages of the album are chipped and flaking but the photos are in excellent shape. ‎DEVON ENGLAND. Good. 1946. On offer is a fascinating original circa 1946 manuscript notebook handwritten by noted British author and Vimy Ridge combatant Ulric Nisbet Captain H.U.S. Nisbet. The book is comprised of two sections: a 32 page retrospective autobiography titled "Memories of my Childhood". Flipping the book over and there is an 88 page transcription of materials relating to the First World War the majority about the capture of Vimy Ridge. We note on page two of his War Experiences he was a Captain in the Royal West Kent Regiment and also a Liaison Officer with the 29th Canadians during the battle of Vimy Ridge. Adding further depth to the manuscript are a number of old postcards photographs and other related ephemera within these pages including some family photographs and an old programme dated 1910 from a school play he acted in playing Orpheus. BIO NOTES: Ulric Nisbet 1897 - 1987 was a British writer and the author of "Thoughts on the Purpose of Art" 1934 "Spread No Wings" 1937 and "Old school tie: recollections of Marlborough before the First World War 1964". He also published books under the pseudonym Hugh Callaway. ‎BRITISH MANDATED 'PALESTINE' ISRAEL THE HOLY LAND. Good. 1947. On offer is a super original 1947 manuscript diary handwritten by Maurice we believe Smith a British soldier later an Officer in British Mandated 'Palestine' beginning February 28th when Maurice leaves the transit camp in Dover for the journey to Palestine via Toulon and Port Said. Writing approximately 130 pages somewhat sporadically Maurice seems to have spells when he writes diary entries every day stops and then resumes writing again. Most of his entries are long with plenty of detail giving an insight into his character his duties and the reality of conflict. At first he seems interested only in sleeping eating drinking and watching films but he is promoted to officer rank and seems to take army life more seriously. Many entries include operational and technical details. He was based in or worked in many locations including: Hebron Arathanya Transjordan Saraband Kantara Jaffa Rehoveth and Lydda. Here are some snippets and notes: "From what I saw of it it was a nice place Dover but I may be wrong; Had a lecture on "Walking out" in which we were told about French girls and wines; Better food. That's the main thing and my reason for volunteering for this job serving in the officers and civilians lounge on board The Empire Battleaxe to Port Said; We were troubled by the wogs a lot though as they were following us all over the place trying to sell their goods; I was able to smoke like a chimney as I had received my free issue; At a dance There were only 2 girls there and everyone was fighting for them; Went to Saraband as an escort with the water wagon; Provided a cordon for the 68th Rifles who are going to search an Arab settlement west of Rehoveth; The duty on the docks is OK but the food the cook dishes up is something awful; Bit of a flap on at Haifa. Illegal immigrant ship; We have started on a new type of operation clearing mines from the railway line between Petal Tigus and Lydda; An Arab has thrown a bomb through another Arabs shop window; About 10.30 Sten Gun fire was heard later found out it was a party returning from the pictures and had run towards the sentry and no messing he opened up. I bet they won't rush a sentry again." ‎Pleasant Valley Cambridge Vermont Albany New Yor. Good. 1880. On offer is a super original manuscript diary handwritten by Mr. Harlan Page French an expressive 19th Century business man and entrepreneur born in Pleasant Valley Cambridge Vermont but spent most of his adult life in Albany New York. In 1881 Harlan's business of French & Choate Stationer succeeded the Readers and Writer's Economy Company. His partner left the business in 1884. While not a day to day diary Harlan writes 154 handwritten pages in the 6" x 11" book beginning March 15th 1880 through to February 13th 1921 but sometimes not writing for years but he retrospectively brings the reader up to date regarding his life his business and his family after the gaps. He and his family wife Augusta nee Bowers and his daughter Florence take many vacations leaving the city as he suffers from allergies. Interestingly he takes "Cocaine" for his hay fever. Readers will find Harlan a super diarist. Here are some snippets: "March 15th 1880. Here I am in New York but not so well pleased with my position as I might be. The business of the Readers and Writers Economy does not start off very briskly and I am a little dissatisfied. However things will probably take a more favorable turn soon and I shall feel better. Have called on Mr. Fisk at 346 Broome St. this P.M. and had a pleasant chat with him. Shall look around a little by and by and see where I can get boarded to the best advantage. We have had a few callers today and a little trade and that is an improvement on Saturday." "April 13th 1880. I am completely tired out and discouraged. Things are getting more and more mixed every day and there seems no possibility of straightening them out. I am discouraged and very blue. If it was in my power to go back four months I should be very sure to continue my relations with the S. S. F. Co. for all of casting in my lot with a concern managed by men with no capitol and no experience. But I am blue tonight and shall probably feel better tomorrow. It is not because business is dull but because it is managed in such an unsystematic and un-businesslike way that I am so discouraged. I have been hoping it would improve but I can't see that it does." "September 1st 1880. The weeks are passing rapidly and when a few more days have gone my wife and baby will be here again. Business is picking up again and we have enough to do from morning till night. Fred Choate came down here for a fortnight ago tomorrow and is going to work for me through the winter. He is doing nicely and seems perfectly contented. Mr. Holmes is evidently getting interested in Mrs. Fellows for which I am rather sorry. But boys will be boys and he is not yet too old to be a boy I guess. Our affairs at Boston are going on in the same old way. Mr. D. is still running things in his impetuous and changeable way and still neglecting important matters which he pursues some imaginary valuable contacts. Economy notes are played out and subscribers defrauded of their money. Catalogues and circulars are not forthcoming great promises are made in our advertisements and but little is done towards fulfilling them. In fact our President does all his work in my opinion in about the worst way possible……" "July 8th 1881. I want to put on record my belief that Dr. Nichols course with the Economy notes has been such as to show positively that he is not capable of doing anything in a business like way. We have had only one number dated in 1881 and although another was promised at once nothing more has been heard of it. The management of the Economy Club and notes has been such as to seriously displease and disgust its friends and has hurt our reputation and our business greatly. And still Mr. Coolidge and Dr. W. can't seem to see it." "November 22nd 1882. In April the 1st I found a co-partnership with Monsieur Smith and Choate's and we have been running the business together since. In May I took a trip to Chicago St. Louis &c and with fine success. On Oct. 13th I started on a second trip and took in Milwaukee St. Paul Minneapolis &c. Had a pleasant and successful trip which I enjoyed quite well for me. Business boomed while I was away and for a week after my return but now it is at a quiet stand again. It has been very dull this week so dull that I do not understand it at all and I have been decidedly down; but I am beginning to recover today. I noticed that I am always troubled with the blues after I return from a trip and I attribute it to the change to indoor work and the taking up of the responsibility which I had laid aside during the trip." "September 11th 1883. On August 2nd myself and family left Brooklyn and went to Cambridge where I left wife and child and on the 4th started west. Was gone a little over five weeks and had fine success but business in the store was very dull and I came home sooner then I otherwise would on account of the unfavorable conditions of our finances and the discouraging letters received from Mr. Stoughton. It is a sad fact that trade has not equalled our expectations and is not likely to. We are running behind and in looking the matter squarely in the face yesterday and today I am compelled to say that I do not see how we are going to make a success. I fear for the future and am very blue and depressed. It does seem as though we had ever been in such close quarters before and I can't for the life of me see our way out. I can only do my best and trust in providence." "June 18th 1886. Albany New York. Well my journal has had a long long rest. For months I didn't care to put down my thoughts and feelings on paper and so have written nothing. My New York experience is over. After three and a half years of hard work unsuccessful in its results I closed out all our goods that I could sent the rest to H. B. Mims and Co. of Troy on sale and the 18th of May 1885 I entered their employ as a traveling salesman. I have not been with them a little more than a year and am quite well satisfied with my position. I have lately been on my vacation to now going up on May 25th. It is just six years this summer since Gusta Florence and I went up there together and spent two weeks on the farm and we are enjoying this visit very much. We drove down to Uncle Marks' on Thursday and up to Pleasant Valley where I was born…." "August 15th 1886. Pittsburgh……I hope I have found a remedy for hay fever in Cocaine which I have been using for three days. I am certainly feeling much better than I did a year ago today and am hoping the improvement will be permanent. This afternoon I have taken a ride across the Monongahela and up an inclined plane on to the bluff west of the city. Made the acquaintance of a young Scotchman who is employed in one of the larger hotels and who like myself was out of a walk. Have a pleasant walk a good view of the city and now will spent the evening reading." 'July 17th 1898. It is more than 12 years since I have written a line in my journal but I am alone tonight and I will begin again. Twelve years ago I was with H. B. Mims and Co. as a traveling salesman. I remained with them until December 31st 1890 when I left their employ and became the manager of the Albany Teachers Agency which had been started by Will Choate three or four years before but which had never amounted to anything. I started into my work with a will but the first year's business was very unsatisfactory. The second year was better and after a while I succeeded in establishing myself on a paying basis. For the last three years business has been good and we have been contented and happy. On May 1st 1890 we moved to No. 2 Leonard place and after two or three years we purchased the house and thus gained a home of our own. The years have brought their trials their joys and sorrows to Augusta and me but we have much to be thankful for. The "baby" is now a young lady who has just completed her second year in Vassar and she and her mother are now visiting Mother Bower's and Fannie in No. Cambridge. On Saturday June 25th I went to Amherst to attend the reunion of the class of 68' thirty years after graduation and I want to make a brief record of my experiences…." "August 11th 1898. A week ago this A.M. I received a telegram from Edward Flanagan telling me that Ned Bowers died the night before August 3rd. Augusta and I were entirely unprepared for this sad news and the shock was almost too much for her. On Friday morning we started for Cambridge and arrived at mother's about 5 P.M. Fannie was at Lexington looking for a minister to conduct the funeral services and when she returned she reported that she had engaged my college classmate H. H. Hamilton. The funeral was at Concord on Saturday afternoon and we laid poor Ned away beside his brothers. It was a sad sad day and one long to be remembered…" "August 25th 1904. Lake Placid. For five years past I have taken a vacation in the hay fever season to escape the annual attacks which have troubled me for 34 years and thus have been able to pass the months of August and September in comparative comfort. In 1900 we went Augusta Florence Mother B. and I to Nova Scotia and spent ten days. The next year we made a longer trip and remained three weeks. Florence did not go but Fannie Bower went for a single week and left Augusta and me to finish the season alone. In 1902 we spent 2 weeks at the Randall House in Morrisville went from there to Bethlehem N.H. for a week or more and then home to Albany via Boston. Last year 1903 we Augusta and I came to Lake Placid on August 22nd arriving in from Westford via Elizabethtown and Keene Center. We remained ten days stopping at Northwood's Inn then went to Morrisville for nearly two weeks to Bethlehem N.H….This year we have planned a change and came up here to Lakeside Inn on the 23rd. We came by the D. and H. taking a parlor car on the fast express leaving Troy at 1:45 P.M. We had a fine trip taking our dinner on the train and arriving at 9:20 in the evening. Augusta enjoyed the journey and arrived in good condition. I had a good deal of trouble with hay fever but it began to improve and now after two days it has nearly disappeared……We have been resting for two days and have done nothing except to walk around Mirror Lake this morning. We left Florence and Frances at home but Florence will come up here after Frances has got Will started in her school at Coxsackie……" "August 31st 1904. Yesterday morning we had a decidedly unpleasant experience. About 6:20 we were wakened by a fearful groan almost a scream from the room adjoining ours. This was followed by other groans and a most unnatural breathing. I rapped at the door and called to the inmate but got no response. Augusta and I were much frightened for we knew someone must be sick and possibly dying. I put on my bathrobe and my slippers and ran down to call Mrs. Lamb. She came up immediately and we called and rapped at the door but got no reply. I looked over the transom and saw a young lady stretched upon her bed and evidently in an unconscious state. Another guest a Mrs. Stewart appeared upon the scene and we burst open the door. Mrs. S. is a born leader and made herself very useful. A doctor was called and in about half an hour he appeared but before his arrival the lady regained consciousness and appeared to be in her right mind. But before he came she acted strangely. She rose from her bed and came into the hall and we had to put her back by main force. She tried to bite Mrs. S. and evidently out of her head. But when she came out of the attack she seemed as rational as anybody. She came down to breakfast and was about the house and the piazza all day. She seemed a little concerned about the attack and told a friend that if she had been left alone she would have come out all right and I almost felt that she blamed me for paying attention to her outcry and calling the land lady. Last night she had another attack only not so severe or at least the noise she made was less disturbing. But she awoke us a little after midnight with her outcry and again we were very much startled and frightened. I rapped on the door and spoke to her but got no answer. Her cry was followed by a gurgling noise and Augusta thought she was vomiting. We didn't know just what to do but decided to wait and see if any further demonstrations were made but nothing further occurred to disturb us and finely we went to sleep again. And this morning the young lady appeared at the breakfast table looking about as usual. Of course I was anxious and felt that I ought to consult with someone so I went down to see the Doctor Warren. He told me it was probably epilepsy and advised me if the trouble occurred again to do nothing as she would probably fall into a deep sleep and would come out of the attack all right….I am sorry for the young woman who is sick and alone in a strange hotel. She is not very talkative and on one knows much about her." "August 30th 1905. Beaumaris Ontario. We left home on the 22nd at noon catching the first fast mail for Buffalo and Niagara Falls where we arrived at 8 P.M. I wired the Imperial Hotel for rooms and we had two that were fairly comfortable except that they were very dirty. The office and waiting room are pleasant and attractive but the sleeping rooms seemed never to have been cleaned the wash bowl and pitcher were dirty and I did not feel at all pleased with the place. But the dining room was rather attractive and the breakfast very good. We left at 9 A.M. for Muskoken and arrived at the wharf without change of cars at 2:50 P.M. On the wharf we found our trunks which were turned over to us by the customs officer without examination and we reached Beaumaris at about 4:30. We found our rooms ready for us and settled down at once. The hotel is quite full and many pleasant people are here but we do not find it quite up to our expectations. We have been out rowing Florence has been in bathing and yesterday we took a trip to Rosseau calling at the Royal Muskoka and taking dinner at Rosseau…." "September 16th 1906. The Mt. Pleasant Britton Woods N.H. We reached this hotel at five o'clock on September 10th and were assigned to a very comfortable room on the third floor that is the third floor above the office No. 340. We have found accommodations excellent the table first class and the service all that one could ask. Everything is neat and clean and everything possible is done for the comfort of the guests. Many people go home from the mountains immediately after Labor Day hence there is more room in the hotels and prices are a little less. But the Mt. Pleasant has been well patronized and last night every room in the house and in the cottage was occupied while many were turned away and sent over to the Mt. Washington. We have both felt pretty well since coming here and we are more contented and much better satisfied here then we were at Colebrook or Bethlehem. There is a concert by an Orchestra of seven or eight musicians every afternoon and evening and three times during the first week there has been a special entertainment by a traveling artist or artists. Friday night there was a masquerade and cake walk given by the help and it was great. Friday P.M. we went to the Mt. Washington to the special concert by twenty two musicians….This climate seems to agree with us for Augusta has improved right along since we arrived at the Mt. Pleasant and I am almost entirely free from hay fever. In fact I have not been so well at this time of year since I can remember. We like it here. Think we shall plan to come next year for two weeks or more. And if we come we want a room on the east side of the house and on the second floor if not too expensive. The third floor rooms are very good but in hot weather they are likely to be a little uncomfortable. And 340 is a little too near the kitchen chimney…." "August 28th 1907. Bethlehem N.H. I went to see Dr. Bartell about my nervousness and he said I was working too hard. He gave me some medicine and told me to lie down for half an hour each day after dinner. I took his medicine and followed his advice and began to feel better. My nervousness and depression disappeared and I felt well…." "September 11th 1908. Sharon Springs N.H. The rheumatism which began to trouble me last Oct. has been my constant companion since this time and we were obliged to give up our usual trip to the White Mountains and come to this place for baths and treatment. We came on August 22nd and shall have been here three weeks tomorrow. The place was recommended by Mr. Paul Wadsworth and Mr. Tidbits of Albany both of whom were greatly benefited by the treatment here. I have taken a bath or a douche every day and have also taken eight massage treatments but the benefit has not been as great as I had hoped….I have suffered very little with hay fever and have got along very comfortably. But Sharon Springs is not an attractive place for a vacation. The hotels are poor and in a dilapidated condition. The town generally "has gone to seed" and there is nothing neat and tidy about it. It has been a positive punishment to us to stay here for three weeks and if it is ever necessary again to go away for rheumatism I think we shall try Clifton Springs." "September 13th 1913. Britton Woods N.H. We left Albany on August 21st for our usual vacation and made our first stop at Cooley's Hotel in Springfield. We have had a busy summer for on May 1st Florence sent Harlan Fritz and Ruth to Albany to be with us while she went to Louisville taking the baby with her for a visit of several weeks in her old home….Our domestic affairs caused some trouble at first as our maid Mrs. Anna Walsh left a day or two before Florence came claiming to be sick; and then Florence had the mumps and was confined to her room for a week or more. We advertised for a girl but without success and finally advertised for a woman by the day. This advertisement brought immediate replies and for nearly two weeks we have three different women every week; Mrs. Lasher Mrs. Powers and Mrs. Quinn. We then succeeded in engaging Mrs. Powers at $7.70 a week to come every day at 9 or 10 o'clock and remain until 8 o'clock. Mrs. Powers is very satisfactory and she remained until we started on our vacation. At Springfield we called on Mrs. Lawrence W. Hatch and her daughter Mrs. Murdough and on the afternoon of August 22nd came on to Bethlehem. Our room at the Maple Hurst was ready for us and we were cordially greeted by many old acquaintances whom we had met in previous years. Augusta was sick when we arrived and kept her room and bed for four or five days. She weighed only 97 ½ pounds after her illness but she improved and gained five or six pounds before we left Bethlehem. We staid there three weeks……" "September 15th 1915. Bethlehem. More than a year has passed since I have made any entry in my journal and we are again in Bethlehem. Serious changes have occurred in my business and after being with me for four and a half years Mr. Fisk has left and his place has been taken by W. W. Andrews former Superintendent of schools at Whitehall N.Y…." "September 20th 1919. Bethlehem N.H. We left Albany and arrived here this same evening……Last Monday I left Bethlehem for a long talked of visit to my old Vt. Home. Spent Monday night at the Randall and called on Martha Safford 90 years old Elizabeth Butler Thomas and Esther French Fitch. Tuesday A.M. I went to Jericho where I met cousin John of Chicago who was brought in his auto from St. Albans by Henry Hatch and his wife. We called on Marion Jordan McClure and her husband found her quite feeble but feeling as well as usual when we arrived. Mr. McClure is in good health but is failing mentally memory going rapidly. I hunted up a man with an auto who took us to Underhill Center where we got a good dinner. Then to Underhill Flat and from there north to Pleasant Valley where I was born…." The last entry diary is dated February 13th 1921 Harlan is at Clifton Springs Sanatorium for rest and help for his feet. Harlan died only 4 months later on June 4th 1921 of Bronchial Pneumonia. BIO NOTES: from American Education 1904: "Harlan P. French was born on a farm in the Green Mountain State in 1843. He entered the People's academy Morrisville Vermont and there fitted himself for college. His first experience in educational work was gained as teacher of a district school. He entered Amherst College at the age of twenty possessed of small means but with a large amount of grit ambition and industry. He graduated in 1868 and immediately entered upon work at Princeton Ill. as assistant principal of the first township high school established in that state. He was afterwards principal and superintendent of schools at Sterling Illinois for several years. In 1871 he received the degree of A.M. from Amherst College. Twelve years ago he became proprietor of the Albany Teacher's Agency and has been unusually successful in its management until it now occupies a place in the first rank of teacher's agencies in this country. In 1895 he was appointed a member of the Albany Board of Public Instruction for a full term of seven years. He was largely instrumental in organizing the New York State Association of School Boards and was secretary of that association for several years." Scoresby English born practiced in Sullivan County and this diary lists patient calls observations on current events pharmaceutical formulas local family names his own family events and news about his son also a doctor W. F. Scoresby. We note that Scoresby's father William was a well-known whaling master and there is a great deal of archival material about the Scoresby's at Mystic Seaport "Scoresby Family Papers Coll. 55." On offer is a super original pre World War II 1937 to 1940 manuscript diary and scrapbook compiled and handwritten by the Reverend C.H. von Glahn of Curtis Corners South Kingstown Rhode Island. The book paints a very complete picture of the life and times of this honoured religious figure and beloved family man all the while with the back drop of international events and the impending War. The Reverend begins the large well filled 11 x 8 inch 300 page book noting the book was a Christmas Day gift from his grandson Jack which is plenty of motivation for him to keep up with his writings. His inspiration obviously works as the book will please any historian or collector of the history and background of Rhode Island at the time as the writings are given the further depth of being littered with clippings notes and photographs. ‎ENGLAND TO CHRISTCHURCH NEW ZEALAND CEYLON BOMBAY. Good. 1882. On offer is a super original manuscript travel diary detailing the England to New Zealand trip of Mr. E. Moore. Beginning January 1st 1882 Mr. Moore who is on his way to manage a bank writes in a fine hand rarely if ever missing a day spends 4 months at sea until reaching Australia and then to his final destination of Christchurch when he finally writes: Tuesday June 13th that he 'took charge of Branch…today.' While some entries are brief recaps of the day at sea or the weather Mr. Moore does a superb job relating all he sees and does in the bigger ports or more interesting and exotic sights like Peking Ceylon Alexandria Venice Turin Bombay. Ceylon for example has 8 days of the 7 1/4" x 4 1/2" page almost overfilled in tiny legible writing. Historians and collectors of 19th Century travel will understand that this was not a 'Grand Tour' diary per se as much as an exciting exotic voyage of this young Englishman to a new life on the other side of the world. The book is in rough shape binding wise and some loose pages but all accounted for and the interior is better overall. ‎LOWELL MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1920. On offer is a very interesting original 1920 manuscript diary handwritten by "Maggie" who works as a nurse at a hospital in Lowell Massachusetts for a kindly "chief" who gives her salary raise to $125.00 per month visiting her family often in another city and shopping in Boston. Maggie is undoubtedly bright writes well but using a 5 year diary for the one year we note an entry all too typical of the times even for a nice girl and nurse: she writes how she went to work as usual: 'a succession of patients streamed into the emerg. Room 1 a girl with a huge cavity in tooth; 2 man with an elbow almost dislocated; 3 man with a finger 'sore likadahell'; 4 Dave with a headache. 5 Negro wanting foot dressed. Balked at the last one.' Her birthday is May 21st and in 1920 she is 26 years old and weighs 101 ½ lbs on May 8 1920. She read a lot and had diabetes. She may have been studying to be a chemist as she belongs to the Chem Society and reads on the subject also attends many socials goes to friends and family for dinners and sits by the fire with friends. She notes on January 28th 1920 "I tried to digest an article in the Jan. 3rd Scientific American on the Einstein Theory of Relativity." She is intelligent diligent happy spends a lot of time with family i.e. playing piano duets with her mother on March 8th 1920 is smitten by a "Robbie" fellow who is studying elsewhere but they talk on the telephone and write letters while apart. She notes a Valentines dinner party with flowery center-pieces and exchange presents on that day with family. There's another address inside that shows him living at Thomasville North Carolina. He was known as "The Motorcycle Man" because of his renown as a Harley Davidson dealer which he did for over 47 years. Only 22 years old at the writing the entire diary reflects whole life being centered around Harley-Davidson motorcycles. One online site dedicated to him provides: "J. Carson Little was the Harley dealer in Lynchburg Virginia for many many years….his incredible collection of Harley literature he had saved throughout the years. His two car garage has a fully finished upstairs room that was a Harley Museum. We learn that Mr Little used to hand out flyers regarding a noted trip to the Rose Bowl. "Hello. The following is a brief description of why I am in your town. "In 1938 Carson and a buddy rode Carson's brand new 1938 Harley from Thomasville North Carolina to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California and home again. He sold the bike in 1948 but started looking for it in 1958. It had passed through 13 owners but on the 20th anniversary of his 1938 trip he found it again. Carson and his son rode back to the Rose Bowl in 1963 the 25th anniversary of his original trip. Of course he rode the same motorcycle as he had done in 1938. He then decided to keep going back every five years "just to keep in practice". 1968 - 30th anniversary. 1973 - 35th. 1978 - 40th. 1983 - 45th and once more in 1988 for the 50th Anniversary. ‎LIVERPOOL ENGLAND ASEA BRITISH COASTAL WATERS. Good. 1916. On offer is a riveting handwritten manuscript World War I naval diary by an officer or higher rating aboard the HMS Zephyr a destroyer cruising the British coast protecting the shipping lanes in WWI. The unidentified author writes densely and very legibly from Monday 28th August 1916 finishing Tuesday 12th December 1916 over 53 pages. He details his journey from Acle near Great Yarmouth Norfolk up to the embarkation on his ship HMS Zephyr in Liverpool and then super detail on the daily happenings asea. There are several other destroyers and ships mentioned including HMS Porcupine destroyer HMS Waveney destroyer HMS Electra destroyer HMS Actaean torpedo boat HMS Brazen destroyer and many more. He also mentioned a collision by HMS Zephyr and an unknown steamer which meant they had to go to port for repairs. There are also areas in which he writes highlighted initials that appear to be a code. What is of particular interest in this mostly 'all business' naval log and diary are 2 passages right at the beginning of the journal wherein our authors confides he has shared his feelings of love for his girl Molly and she too recipricates. The next day he tells of meeting her for a goodbye. These sections were then crossed out! Legible still obviously a half hearted effort to remove this memory. Very intriguing given there is not a single other correction or deletion and hardly any more personal info. On offer are two super original handwritten notebooks by what appears to be an unidentified British Army Officer who states that he has lived in the Near East for 4 years and was on leave in 1919.One gets the impression the officer intended write a book and lecture on the subjects contained: Book 1 deals with Egyptian occult practices and amulets in great detail. The author of this manuscript affects a very skeptical tone overtly Christian and may be writing as a counterpoint to Sir Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge who wrote extensively on Egyptian occult amulets and who translated the Egyptian Book Of The Dead which helped increase the public appetite for the subject. Skeptical he may be but clearly he is fascinated by the occult beliefs of the mass of the people he has met in his travels. The text covers: evil spirits - ginns amulets - ornamental charms - paper tin lead wood magic powders plants curses the healing cup the black magic trembling cup good and bad angels six pages on the evil eye and cures rabies beads etc. etc. The second book is the text to accompany a slide show: "Up the Nile to Assouan and a glimpse of Abu Simbel". 100 pages with an index no slides but very erudite. This is not tourist stuff but scientific discourse. The books are in very good condition and measure 9" x 7" and 44 and 100 pages respectively. Handwriting is very clear. ‎BloOMINGBURG OHIO OH. Good. 1906. On offer is a sensational family diary lot in this collection of 16 diaries with each being completely full of handwritten entries. All of these diaries belonged to C.W. Larrimer of Bloomingburg Ohio. They start in 1906 when he's 44 and the last diary is 1921. Cursory examination reveals he's a cattle rancher an assessor at least in the month of April and a jack of all trades. He loves to travel and ends up taking several trips all over Ohio and then in 1915 takes a trip to California and another one to Cuba in 1917. He also loves his auto transporting and picking up folks all the time. In fact he makes several trips to Indianapolis for the races. Very interesting that all the diaries are full of handwritten entries even when he's sick. In fact he gets so sick he has to go in for an operation at the Battle Creek Hospital and infirmary. He's sick for many weeks and still writes "sick" in his journal not missing a day of journaling. But then in the last diary 1921 the entries stop abruptly on December 4th and on December 13th there is an entry that just said "Died Today". We assume this is our author who died or perhaps someone he loved deeply was sick and died. His entries are usually one sentence up to a small paragraph in length as you will see in the following excerpts. "Went to Chillicothe last night with Mr. Gunn. Stalled in creek at Sulfur Lick Springs all day. Went out to Chillicothe Park and National Cemetery. Rained in forenoon. Went to Missionary ridge up on Lookout Mountain all day….Carrying mail for Claude Andrews nice day but sick in the evening. Daisy died this morning out looking for the horse. In Indianapolis all day. Brother Will and Cliff hear at White City in evening. Out to see Lewis Bloomer in forenoon at Wonderland and at Park in evening….Went to Anderson's in the afternoon and also to Buffalo Bills Show….At Sulfur Lick Springs all day and up to the new hotel….Stayed all night in New Castle. Left with new auto at 2:15 got to Dayton at 6 PM. Took traveling man to Solon……Out with traveling man all day at Solon….Hauled traveling man to Madisonville and Jefferson. At the place took commissioners to see bridge….Went from Anderson to Indianapolis to auto races bug crowd fine day….Went to the caves with Hoppes and Wolf…At home all day Pa is getting weaker all the time….Pa died at 6 PM at W.C.H….Started for California August 25th 1915….he then mentions going to St. Paul National Park Spokane Seattle Portland Ashland Frisco Los Angeles Mexico Redlands Salt Lake Colorado Springs and returned home on Oct. 2nd 1915…." and much much more. Written by Hiram Maynard of Waterloo Iowa this delightful and well-written diary spans the last half of his senior year in high school and the early portion of his freshman year at what I believe is Marietta College in Marietta Ohio. Provided are entries for most days of the year 1914. Browsing through it becomes evident that the young man came from a fairly affluent family and associated with friends who were also well off. Noted is that his father was employed by the Ciitizens Gas and Electric Company of Waterloo. There are frequent references to automobiles a most expensive luxury in 1909! hotel stays out-of-town visits attendance theatre/movie/vaudeville performances and one entry makes reference to his own motorcycle. It also sems that his parents were fairly liberal in his upbringing given his late hours though it's clear that the young man led a wholesome life popular with his many friends involved in school and church activities. Note his reference to hearing a Garfield speech: a relation to a relative of the then-late President Garfield Presumably it was a campaign speech for Republican congressional candidates in the then-forthcoming November election. Note also the fine penmanship. We believe the writer is based in or near Coalport Pennsylvania as most of the charts and schedules relate to Coalport as the starting point. It is a pocket sized multi-ring notebook with 101 numbered pages and three extended pull out maps an index and some printed articles about canals are glued in. It has drawings of canal boats. Important details are neatly underlined in red ink. The author spent a huge amount of time and attention into the details. It measures 3.25" by 5.5". The notebook cover is in very rough shape there are a few pages that are no longer attached but all appear present and very legible. There is some age-toning evident. Lehigh Delaware Barge Cape Cod Panama Morris are some of the canals mentioned. ‎SCRANTON PENNSYLVANIA PA. Good. 1898. Leather. On offer an incredibly comprehensive handwritten and significant 10-year manuscript diary of former Yale University student Attorney Thomas J. Wells of Scranton Pennsylvania chock full and spanning ten full years of his life beginning January 1st 1898. Importantly beginning in 1898 the diary contains significant legal and Spanish American War entries. BIO NOTES: The Wells or Welles as it was sometimes spelled family was quite prominent during the 1800s and early 1900's research suggests there is a connection with Henry Wells co-founder of Wells-Fargo. There are three thousand six hundred plus of entries. The title page of the diary reads in his own hand "Ten Years of My Life Thos. J. Wells Scranton PA" and "Compliments of E.B. Sturges". The journal is beautifully appointed with gilt edges and gilt stamped day/date headings on each page through to 1907. Of notable interest are many many passages relative to the Spanish-American War. On 2/16/1898 Atty. Wells tells us of the Battleship Maine being blown up. On 5/20/1898 he speaks of the President calling for 75000 volunteers and the bombing of Santiago Cuba on 6/6. On 7/3 he goes on to tell us there has been bad news from the war that 8000 were wounded and killed and on 7/4 he speaks of "our fleet had totally destroyed Admiral Cerveras Spanish Fleet." and then on the 17th of July tells us "Our army formally enters Santiago and our Flag floats over the city" and again reports "Our soldiers under General Miles laid and raised our Flag in 'Porto' Rico". The wartime references are stunning in their own right however there are many legal battles that Thomas J. Wells Esquire tells us about in this journal as well. A sharp barrister for certain Wells speaks of receiving awards and working on cases such as Thomson-Houston Electric Company which in Wells' day merged with Edison Company to become the giant known as General Electric Company. One will find many a handwritten testament to life politics law and war within the many pages of this very thick and well preserved account. While unidentified our author was very faithful with their journaling during the 3 ½ months touring England Ireland and in particular France as she was a witness to the beginnings of the Franco-Prussian War and for all intents and purposes the beginning of the modern Era for France Germany and all of Europe. Mere days before the war begins she sees the King of Prussia gambling and she reports of the difficulties in getting money all of a sudden. ‎NAPA VALLEY CALIFORNIA CA ST. HELENA. Good. 1900. On offer is a super manuscript diary by renowned California painter Lucy E. Wiester as evidenced by the holograph entry "Mrs. W. H. Wiester 1900-1901" and then her address in San Francisco also in her hand there are archival notes in pencil in a later hand reading: 'St. Helena Diary' where she resided in Napa Valley California. It appears our writer used an older 1897 diary which has about 9 days entries for 1897 by the previous owner almost certainly a family member as similar people are mentioned but then Lucy picks up the book and writes for the most daily entries from January 1st through May 16th 1900 then somewhat more sporadically to April 1901. We learn that Lucy is a married busy thriving artist and active member of the community in Napa Valley. Research finds she was born in 1843 Illinois. The diary relates many instances of wild-flowering hearing concerts like the Knickerbocker Quartet and the Neopolitain mandolin California Club meetings artist trips and much much more. She does a great job mentioning the names of her visitors contacts and intimates. This is a very interesting bit of California Americana of an early 20th century artist. ‎ST. JOHNSBURY VERMONT VT. Good. 1876. On offer is an archive of handwritten manuscript letters that belonged to Helen Wood of St. Johnsbury Vermont. The letters which date circa 1876 - 1888 interestingly are both to and from Helen. In all there are 15 letters and 7 of those still have their envelopes. Then there are 9 empty covers. These letters will be of particular interest to historians of the era as the correspondents were detailed in their writings. One letter written to Helen by a friend living in Brooklyn New York dated 1887 relates over 4 pages a fascinating account of the way Brooklyn is changing especially 5th avenue. Here are some snippets: "N.H. College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts Letterhead Hanover N.H. March 7th 1886 Dear Sister I received a letter from you last Tuesday. I do not feel much older than I did last year. We had some rough weather here a little less than a week ago and since Harvey was away I was very busy keeping Culver Hall and myself warm. It was so cold here in my room that both radiators were frozen up a large part of the time. It was pretty cold boarding myself those days or in fact doing anything. It is quite comfortable now however and my ink etc. is thawed out…….Sincerely Yours George P. Wood." "St. Johsbury Vt. March 20th 1886 Dear Folks It is almost eight o'clock and I am just up. My sleep was disturbed in the night and I woke up about four and heard a queer kind of noise under my window. It sounded some like some one crying fire then like two or three men fighting and then I happened to remember that the freshman class from Hanover had their class supper at one at one of the Hotels last night. It must have been lots of fun to run round this building in a snowstorm at that time of day. After they got round they sang two or three songs gave two or three war whoops and tore themselves away. Judging from their songs they hated to leave us……Love to all Mary K.Wood." "New York May 11th 1887 Dear Helen Many thanks for your good letter and the beautiful collection of early flowers from the Old Lebanon Hills. They reached here safely though somewhat wilted from the close confinement and the loss of their pure mountain air. They embellished the mantle piece of the dining room for several days. While we all took several refreshing whiffs as we passed by……If you were to take a ride down 5th avenue you would not know the place. On the East Side there is but 1 block but what is either filled up or has been commenced upon. Even the old Polhemus Mansion cor. 5th Ave. and Carrol St. on that high bluff has been torn down and the Hill graded down and now covered with brick buildings mostly flats 4 stories high with stores underneath. Flat old Mansions on 1st & _______streets with all those beautiful shade trees in front have fallen victim to the march of improvement. The old house has been moved down to 3rd Ave. and converted into a Tenement House. "How art thou Fallen" The entire block is either covered with dwellings mostly 2 story and basements or cellars…….South of 7th St. every vacant lot is being filled up. Across the street from us they are putting up 6.3. stores and basement houses. Above 6th Ave. below the Episcopal Church there are 5 more going up. So it is all about us 5th 6th 7th & 8th Aves…….Saw the account of your disastrous fire in the evening papers with more particulars this morning. What a severe blow to the village and to so many people that have lost their homes with the savings of years. ‎AUGUSTA MAINE ME. Good. 1878. On offer is a super original archive of five 5 handwritten manuscript diaries authored by Reverend Isaac J. Mead of Augusta Maine. He was the son of Albert Manley Read who died in 1861 fighting in the Civil War. Research finds that Mead is listed in the Universalist Register of 1895 as editor of THE GOSPEL BANNER. His handwritten diaries are for 1878 he is 37 years old 1882 1887 1888 and 1889 when he is 48. Mead is an enthusiastic prolific writer rarely failing to write a diary entry rarely failing to detail his visits his works his travels and to set these writings apart Isaac Mead proves to be a rather political churchman who rarely fails to press the Universalist Church's approach. His daily entries include the weather his work on the Banner Universalist meetings conferences Sunday services his preaching funeral duties etc. He makes many 'insider' remarks on Church doings and of other Church communities' doings. Historians and collectors of Maine and the neighboring states will have a treasure trove of information on religious matters of the day plus Mead also details: politics of the day; the Blaine and Harrison presidential contest local news like the Dexter Bank case Stain-Cromwell were defendants stabbing on the mail train soldier jumps fight leads to death collision of ocean steamers muster week-encamped on Leonard Farm Glencarin finished race faster etc. Took trip to New York City-Coleman House Coney Island "great playground of this city" Fleetwood Park Eden Museum wax Madison Square - 2 plays. Mr. Fairburn got him his Remington rifle -"a very pretty gun". Mead mentions many hundreds of names of his colleagues visitors family et al. Many entries about gun club target practice etc. Reverend Mead does not provide holographic ownership markings but this archive of diaries came from a larger archive of his estate ephemera.
