LEO EDWIN BROMBERG
1933 - 1936 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF A FAILED BUSINESS TRIP TO CHINA AND THE FOILED PROSPECTS OF A YOUNG LOS ANGELES ATTORNEY AS HE DESCRIBES THE HELL OF HIS FIRST YEARS IN PRACTICE
SHANGHAI CHINA LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA CA. Fair. 1933. On offer is the super intimate manuscript diary and relic of Depression Era Americana being the handwritten diary of Beverly Hills-Los Angeles area lawyer Leo Edwin Bromberg. This diary is particularly interesting on a number of levels. The journal begins "January 1st 1933 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning. New Years Day here in Shanghai." Begun as a letter to his wife Judy Bromberg describes his trip retrospectively as it had begun 3 months before his main companion a Major T.M. Morass who he is quite taken with walks along Soochow Creek Chinese dance halls his work on a deal for the Shanghai Mutual Life Insurance Co. leaving Shanghai on the 27th of 1933 to Hong Kong Singapore and then abruptly ending February 9th 1933 to re-start January 3rd 1934 with his return to independent practice still embroiled in bad 1933 insurance business upon his return to California and the 'fiasco of the China trip' and the blow by blow of much of his painful present from managing his brother Irving's trial for buying hot goods his brother would go on to found the company that would become Sega to his own return to investing along with his dreaded return to lawyering as a profession. He tends to write until the substance of the year silences him and then he picks up again in the New Year lamenting the year before. It is not until 1935 that his fortunes turn around and he wins a few cases and makes some money. This diary of 46 folio sized pages fully written by depressed Depression era author has had some water damage to the edges of the text block for the most part legible though the odd page with some loss. The rear cover is damaged and half missing but overall the item is Fair.; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: CHINA SHANGHAI LAWYERS LEGAL PROFESSION LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA THE PRACTICE OF LAW DEPRESSION DEPRESSION ERA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY TRAVEL antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . unknown

DR and MRS HG KRIBS H G
1920s ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK OF EDUCATIONAL AND CHRISTIAN OUTREACH BY THE AMERICAN PRESBYTERIAN MISSION AS A PENNSYLVANIA DOCTOR OF BIOLOGY AND ZOOLOGY SPENDS 7 YEARS IN INDIA TEACHING
ALLAHABAD INDIA BOMBAY JAMUNA RIVER SANGAM. Good. 1920. On offer is a sensational original scrapbook compiled and owned by Dr. H.G. and Mrs. Kribs of Pennsylvania. The book details their journey to India and their social life and meetings with the upper strata of East Indian society and many many government leaders with the background of their educational missionary work. That said much of the content shows that they were attempting to bridge the cultural gap between societies as many of the invites reveal 'mixed race' parties and functions. The diary is packed - to the point of the covers bursting and off though present - with invitations letters to and from photos newspaper clippings and much much more dated through the 1920's. There are a few photos at the very back in later years. The Kribs were based in Allahabad and were very highly connected as evidenced by the invitations. Invites include: Rai Bahadur Jagmal. Raja The Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University Members of the Indian Science Congress The Chancellor and Members of University of Bombay His Excellency The Governor and Lady Hailey The Senate House 8th December 1926 The Staff and Students of Oxford & Cambridge Hostel 1924 etc. Online references flesh out the details of the Kribs' trip and experience in India: 1 Narberth Presbyterian SPEAKER: Dr. H. G. Kribs University of Pennsylvania. SUBJECT: Some World Problems of Religion." This service will be under the auspices of the H. C. Gara Men's Bible Class. Dr. Kribs is a man of wide experience and will bring a worthwhile message. EVERY MAN is cordially invited to be present. 2 Dr. H. G. Kribs of the Department of Zoology of the University of Pennsylvania will speak on "Some Problems of Religion. He has had world experience as a teacher traveler and social worker only recently returned to this country after seven years residence at Allahabad India where he taught Biology in the Christian College. 3 Ewing Christian College ECC was established in 1902 as Allahabad Christian College by the American Presbyterian Mission ECC is one of the oldest colleges established in India. However this claim is doubtful because the British East India Company was long gone at the time of the college's founding as the British had taken over the control of India after the first war of Independence in 1857. At the beginning the college was named Vernacular school. Later its governance was shifted to the Presbyterian Church. In 1910 it was called Allahabad Christian College. The campus is located on the northern bank of Jamuna River near Sangam on the southern part of Allahabad City. Spread on a sprawling green campus of 42 acres 170000 m2 the college opened its Agriculture Economics Extension Department on the other side of the river which soon developed into Allahabad Agriculture Institute now a deemed university. The college took giant strides in the field of higher education with Dr. Dudgeon opening a first laboratory course in botany laying a very strong base for research in the college. In 1903 many undergraduate offerings were initiated. However in 1922 on the account of a new university act the school lost its college status. In 1935 it started offering classes in a coeducational setup. In 1950 after the permission of Allahabad University classes for degree students began and once again it acquired college status. More recently in 1995 it achieved its autonomous status as institution in India which could offer its own examinations under the affiliation with Allahabad University.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: JAMUNA RIVER SANGAM ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY ALLAHABAD CHRISTIAN COLLEGE EWING CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SOCIAL STUDIES RACE RELATIONS CASTE SYSTEM DR. Florence Heller
1930s Multi-Year Interwar Diary of a Middle Class Jewish New Yorker Age 16 Untouched by the Great Depression and Unaware of the Inequities of the Time
New York City Interwar NY: Interwar Years Great Depression New York City Teen. Good. 1930s. Hardcover. On offer is a well-kept Jewish middle class teenage girl's five-year diary from the 1930's in New York City. The author of the diary is Florence Heller. She lives in New York City and context suggests that she is 16 years of age when she begins it. Our informal research has not found any other additional biographical information about her. The diary covers the years 1933 and 1934 with several more entries scattered of the following 3 years. Her family is Jewish and as owners of a shop occupy a middle class position in the community. There are no references to the widespread economic woes of the Great Depression and her life seems insulated from its ravages. As you would expect it is chock full of the events and names of individuals that made up her busy adolescent life. "My birthday - terrible time - went shopping for a party - bought nothing. Sam Gottlieb called - had a good laugh" Jan 2 1933; "Got a call from Benny - he's bringing a friend along for Yetta - hope its someone nice . Yetta slept over. Benny brought Hal much to my disappointment - Benny is just about crazy over me - Saw Irving while walking with Benny - was a bad girl because I kissed too much" Feb 24 1933; "I wonder if I should go with Perry. I'll ask Lillie what to do"June 24 1933; "Yetta told me she met a nice fellow in nite school - I ought to go too - maybe I'll meet a nice fellow ." Oct 23 1933; "Closed store - Bob came in - said he didn't write because he was ill - I don't particularly care for Bob - We're going out tomorrow with Charlie and a girl" Jan 13 1934. The simple reference to the family having a 'colored girl' to do housekeeping hints at the racial and economic divisions in their society: "Francis the colored girl didn't come so I had to clean put on curtains & change bedding. After shower we had seder" Mar 30 1934. For a researcher into Women's Studies or a social historian this is an excellent window into the world of teenage girls during the inter-war years. The attitudes hinted at in this diary point to the type of traditional roles for women that would be steadily altered over her lifetime. The diary measures 5.5 inches by 4.0 inches and contains 365 pages. It is approximately 40% complete. The book is in good condition. The cover is a soft leather with an embossed design and shows little sign of wear. The handwriting is legible.; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 365 pages; Keywords: handwritten manuscript document letter autograph writer hand written documents signed letters manuscripts historical holograph writers autographs personal memoir memorial antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier antike brief pergament dokument manuskript papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel Classism racism Great Depression Lived Experiences Girls experiences women's studies growing up in New York NYC New York in the 1930s interwar years middle class Jewish women Jewish teenager store owner Jewish store owners Jewish middle class NYC Americana US History ; Signed by Author .
