Grundberg, Andy
Brodovitch
Boston Massachusetts U.S.A.: Harry N Abrams Inc 1989. Masters of American design series - with 340 illustrations including 70 in full color. 164 p Brodovitch was the model of the modern art director. The essence of contemporary magazine design - the driving pursuit of new ways to present visual material - can betraced to the example he set. While at Harper s Bazaar from 1934 to 1958 he created a design look whose energy elegance and simplicity captured the spirit of American fashion. magnetic and controversial he inspired the designers and photographers who attended his famous Design Laboratory. -"Astonish me!" was Alexey Brodovitch's constant admonition to the artists photographers and designers he directed through his long career as a pacesetter of graphic design. As art director of Harper's Bazaar from the depths of the Depression to the high plateau of Eisenhower optimism he changed the role of graphics and the graphic artist in daily life. In this strikingly handsome book Grundberg photography critic for the New York Times chronicles his subject from dashing Russian emigre to dean of American art directors. A case can be made that as a theorist Brodovitch anticipated the work of Moholy-Nagy but he wrote little preferring to devote himself to his work and his many proteges. Besides discussing and unveiling Brodovitch's designs and photos--including a brilliant set for the Ballets Russes--the author also sets the work of such master photographers as Avedon Penn Brassai and Cartier-Bresson in context. First American Edition. Fine/Fine as New. Harry N Abrams Inc unknown

Entries range throughout 1943 and 1944. Here are some of the entries: writing of D-Day - he writes on Monday June 5th 1944 23:30 hrs. "News of invasion in London 6:30 A.M. 6/6 have a happy group around radio. 2 letters looks formidable in date. This invasion means beginning of end but a long way yet". Tuesday February 22 1944: "Worst unable to read yet. 120 - 125 per hour. I was blown off feet onto fanny. Two huts gone. Aided corpman securing gear. Von I Fires all out for unable to read plenty cold. Tempted to pack my gear. Lights all on. No worry about surprise attack tonight". Monday April 10 1944: Mentions the Sullivans. MAVIS BRAZEL
1936 ORIGINAL DEPRESSION ERA MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PASSIONATE YOUNG OKLAHOMA GIRL
BARTLESVILLE OKLAHOMA 1936. On offer is a charming original 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman named Mavis Bazel. The book is dated from January 1 1936 through June 15 1936 with approximately 190 detailed pages. We estimate Mavis is 15 or 16 years old and as is typical of teenagers she has many passions: Mavis is crazy about Nelson Eddy catching his show in Tulsa igniting a desire to take singing lessons which would cost $2 per month. Seeing in person "the Dixie Melody Masters" and rolled up the rug and danced; learning to ice skate for the first time she became obsessed with it; likes Duke a lot but he has bad complexion and need not see him anymore she does continue to see him then dumps him he falls for her girlfriend and she likes him again listened to many hockey games on station WVOO; intensely interested in local men and women's basketball games in surrounding towns of Norman Dewey Barnsdall Bristow Coffeyville Copan Tulsa Phillips Wann Collinsville Claremore. She's a regular girl without apparent physical or emotional ailments except for frequent colds. She enjoys going to the drugstore for sandwiches and hot chocolate plays the new game Monopoly on Feb. 14 1936 writes poetry and hopes to go to college preferring the school to be farther away from home. Mavis gets her hair cut/washed/set regularly and has a 10 year old sister Peggy. She gets a summer job and the diary ends on June 14 1936. Mavis makes noteworthy mentions of films an current events: Jan 17 1936 "Rudyard Kipling died this evening at 7" Jan 21 1936 "King George of England died - King Edward the 8th ascended throne" mentions "Bruno Richard Hauptmann the alleged kidnapper of the Lindburgh baby". Films/plays include Anne of Green Gables Becky Sharpe with Miriam Hopkins which Mavis comments on as being "terribly over-acted" Magnificent Obsession with Robert Taylor and Irene Dunn commented upon as "cool" and Small Town Girl with Robert Taylor and Janet Gaynor. The 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" book's front cover is loose but attached several pages ripped out towards the end of diary otherwise the contents look great and is overall G. Good. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Snead, Sam; Pirozzolo, Dr Fran
The Game I Love: Wisdom Insight and Instruction from Golf's Greatest Player
Westminster Maryland U.S.A.: Ballantine Books 1997. Splendid copy. As new. Boldly inscribed across the front endpaper in black marker by Sam Snead .Whether or not Sam Snead sits atop the leader board as golf's greatest is no gimme but there's no question about his ability to communicate. His storytelling was always as much a part of his game as his smooth melodic swing and he tells wonderful stories in The Game I Love. In the tradition of Harvey Penick's bestselling series Snead's book is a slim volume that affably blends advice with anecdote swing thought with strategy: on that level alone the book is nothing if not useful and engaging. What makes it uniquely fun though is its clever bottom-of-the-page photo feature; flip quickly through the book and you can see the Snead swing--as graceful as the game has ever produced--in all its glory and that fills The Game I Love with poetry as well. Stackpole, Edward J
From Cedar Mountain to Antietam
Harrisburg: Stackpole 1959. Very Good in a good dustjacket. Bound in full pictorial cloth. Octavo. Map-endpapers. 466pps. with numerous maps and illustrations. There is a lean to the spine and light dustspotting to the board-edges. Also a small abrasion at the top of the front pastedown and the original owner's gift inscription neatly-penned at the top of the second fep. Otherwise clean tight and bright; the pages are immaculate. The dustjacket glossy in a mylar sleeve has moderate chipping at the tips and the spine-ends with a couple of closed tears on either panel. The original price of $5.95 is intact on the front flap. SIGNED and inscribed by the author "with best wishes from another old Pennsylvania Guardsman." ".In the summer of 1862 Lincoln sought victory by constituting the Army of Virginia in the Warrenton area under Maj. Gen. John Pope to threaten Lee from that direction while McClellan continued to press against Richmond on the James River. But the Confederates more agile mentally and physically defeated Pope in detail first at Cedar Mountain then on a larger scale at Second Manassas Bull Run. Following a dramatic aftermath at Chantilly Lee invaded the North with Harrisburg as his initial objective. McClellan preempting command of the combined Federal forces followed Lee to Frederick thence over the western mountain passes where two battles were fought. Meantime Jackson circled around to capture Harper's Ferry after which he rejoined Lee on the Antietam where was fought the bloodiest single day of the war. McClellan should have won but his lethargy and errors caused the fight to end in a stalemate after which Lee retreated into Virginia. The author in addition to clarifying the flow of events gives in his analysis the reasons for what happened and brings into sharp relief the main characters of the drama." Purchase with confidence: all books gradings and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly refunded. We believe the manuscript was written in the mid 20th Century but there really is little evidence save the paper and style of writing. Overall G. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript. unknown

Pfanz provides detailed tactical accounts of each stage of the fighting and explores the interactions between -- and decisions made by -- generals on both sides. He suggests that Union blunders nearly resulted in a victory for Confederate lieutenant general Richard S. Ewell on 2 July although defeat came the next morning at the hands of Union troops fighting behind breastworks at Culp's Hill. This book also explores the Confederate occupation of the town of Gettysburg the skirmishing in the south end of the town and in front of the hills and the small but decisive fight between Union cavalry and the Stonewall Brigade." Van Loon, Gerard Willem
The Story of Hendrik Willem Van Loon with ephemera
Philadelphia: Lippincott 1972. Fine in a Very Good dustjacket. Bound in full red cloth. Both the spine and the decorative front board are stamped in gilt. Van Loon artwork-endpapers. xi 399pps. plus sixteen pages of photos and illustrations. Stated First Edition.Includes original artwork please read on. There is very mild rubbing to the spine-ends otherwise clean tight square and bright. All tips are sharp. The text is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket glossy in a mylar sleeve is rubbed along the folds and has a touch of sunning to the spine; no chips soiling or tears. The original price is intact. Laid into the book are two envelopes addressed to Gerard the author of this biography and the subject's son -- then Lt. Gerard Van Loon -- in Washington DC in September of 1943. The envelopes are embellished with original drawings that mimic the style of the illustrations in 'The Message of the Bells.' The first envelope is postmarked Sept. 27th 1943 addressed to Gerard Willem Van Loon at the Hotel Annapolis. This was stamped in at the hotel Sept 28th 8:06 AM 1943. This bears the drawing of a little man in a tall hat smoking a pipe in red yellow and green. The back of the envelope is printed with the return address Nieuw Veere Old Greenwich Connecticut. There is a further imprint of a coat of arms or emblem in black and white on the flap. The second envelope is postmarked September 21st 1943 no reception stamp also addressed to Lt. Van Loon at the Hotel Annapolis. This is embellished with a drawing of the same little man in black and white lying against a shaving brush hightlighted in yellow. In all quite an arresting biography which includes charming one-of-a-kind artwork. ".This richly textured tightly woven biography is unusual for several reasons not the least of which is the author's identity. Hendrik Willem's son tells his father's story with unvarnished objectivity with love and compassion with humor and brilliance. Moreover Gerard van Loon has recreated his father's life and times and the marvelous galaxy of his friends and associates in a work that has the pace and intensity of a major novel. It is in the words of Leon Shimkin 'a wonderful recollection of the early years of book publishing and a magnificent story of a very extraordinary person'."
