On offer is a charming 72 page manuscript relic of early 20th Century northern California school memories being the handwritten journal of the young Robert Wormser 1900 - 1971 a student at the San Rafael Grammar School who detailed many of his school activities trips and some personal travels in this 1909 - 1912 notebook who adds more depth and charm including a number of black and white photos. The index Robert provides includes chapters: Public Schools and Business; Diary for 1909 and Thought Book for 1910; My Birthday Party; Notes on Our Tahoe trip; Snow!!; The Last Term and The Candy Sale. The 7.5 x 9 inch book save for some general ageing rubbing and bumps to the cover and some yellowing to the pages is otherwise G. BIO NOTES: Robert Wormser: Born in San Francisco California USA on 14 Sep 1900 to Samuel Isaac Wormser and Blanche Wertheimer. He passed away on 1971 in Pasadena California USA. Nominated to the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame by Bob Wakefield Nominee's History; School: Santa Barbara High School Sports Coached: Tennis Years Coached: 1938-1955; Outstanding Achievements or Honors. Research indicates that Robert Wormser was the only child of one of the co-founders of S&W Fine Foods in San Francisco and conceivably did not have to work a day in his life. However after graduating from Lowell HS in SF he completed a BA at Harvard in 1922 enrolled as a student teacher at Santa Barbara State Teachers College in 1924 became a faculty member there in 1926 and served four years as a junior supervisor in the campus training school. He then completed work for an MA in Education at Stanford in 1932. After six months in Europe he came to SB and taught English and dramatics at SB Junior High School before transferring to SBHS in 1938. In his first year at the Home of the Dons Wormser assisted the boys' tennis program as Tom Kruger won a CIF Southern Section Singles Championship. Beginning in 1939 Wormser was head coach and achieved CIF SS Team Championships in 1939 1941 and 1942. He was briefly out of coaching during World War II. He was already 41 years old when the war began but he served briefly as Assistant Field Director for the American Red Cross. Then as he reported to the Harvard University Alumni Office ".when my request for overseas service was denied I decided to return to my work at the high school. I find this work as enjoyable and satisfying as on the day I began to teach." In 1947 the SBHS boys' tennis program produced a CIF SS Doubles Championship by juniors Stan Green and Jim Herd who defeated a South Pasadena 11th grade duo in the finals. The same four players met again in the finals in 1948 with South Pasadena prevailing. Wormser retired from teaching and coaching in 1955 citing health reasons and moved to Pasadena where for the next several years he gave "free tennis lessons to the youth of Pasadena." National Encampment G.A.R. Springfield MA Massachu 1896. handwritten diary titled Reminiscences of the National Encampment G.A.R at Saint Paul Minnesota Sept. 1896. It was written by one of twenty members of the Springfield Massachusetts contingent who traveled to the 30th annual encampment. The beginning of the diary details the trip and the men in blue on the trains and the rest tells of events at the encampment but most importantly the talks were recorded of battles that many of theses men engaged in. Here some snippets: The Mass. Dept Headquarters were assigned at the Hotel Windsor and the Wilcox Post of Springfield Mass including the few veterans of other immediate posts membering about 20 occupied 2 rooms at the Commanders High School Building situated at the corner of East 10th and Minnesota streets with convientely located the latter within a stones throw of the great auditorium and but a sling shot from the city Capitol Building. Here we found our meals provided for us and fairly ample accommodations
. To give the greater emphasis to the final story he related let me premise by saying that it was General Longstreet whom commanded the 18000 men to whom Pickett and Pettigrew looked for his assenting nod in the final awful charge was made up the fields of Gettysburg and Longstreets men were those who shot off the leg of General Sickles on the eventful July day in the year of our Lord 1863. Well it was not very long since upon the occasion of a convention of the GAR in the south that Sickles was cordially invited to pay him a visit to be the guest of Longstreet at his Georgia home. The commanders learning of his whereabouts sent a messenger inviting him to come to the convention to make them a speech. Sickles declined
.It is estimated that fully 200000 visitors witnessed the great procession. The sidewalks were densely packed the steps doors and stairways and windows were over crowded and numerous temporary platforms were filled to overflowing
.Another beautiful sight on the route was the so called living Flag consisting of lasses dressed in red white and blue and so arranged in position as to present the Star Spangled Banner
.Another Camp Fire was arranged to be held at the Auditorium at 8 oclock and it was in honor of the ex-prisoners of war
. There are thirteen handwritten pages each measuring about 5.5 x 8.5. The writing is small as if to get as much onto a page as possible but it is mostly legible. An interesting diary written by a Union veteran of the Civil War. For the most part in good shape One oversize page has a chipped/rough edge but no loss. 1950s ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT ARCHIVE OF CHINESE DOCUMENTS DETAILING ONE TEACHER'S CONTRIBUTION TO CHINESE POLICY AND THEN HIS REQUIRED CONFESSION AND APOLOGY ALL HIGHLIGHTING THE SCHIZOPHRENIC NATURE OF MID 20TH CENTURY CHINESE POLICY AND POLITICS
ZhangJiaKou HeBei Province PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF C 1951. On offer is a significant historical manuscript document archive of 120 pages handwritten by a Chinese teacher named Wang JiYao who was a teacher at the Food Oil factory City of ZhangJiaKou HeBei Province in the era of the anti-rights struggle of the 1950's. Historians and researchers and collectors of the era will note the schizophrenic nature of the times so clearly displayed by the totality of these papers. The man in this archive was a teacher born in early 1930s becoming a teacher in 1951. As the Chinese government launched a call for intellectuals to give advice and even criticize the leader of the government in early 1957 this teacher gave frank and reasonable advice and criticism of the government. Later that year the situation reversed. He and thousands of other intellectuals in China who criticized their leaders and government were judged guilty of anti-socialist thought and right wing deviation. He was classified as a Rightist for what he said in his daily life. Some examples: "The brutality of the communist party is unsurpassed by the Qin Emperor"; "It should be fine to criticize Chairman Mao because he is an educated man"; "If the leader refuses the criticism then he should not be a leader". The writer was called to confess his so called crimes. The confession was written by Wang JiYao from 1951 to 1957 the material written before 1957 was related to his family because he was born to a landowner's family which was classified as the class enemy number one. Other reports were written by many coworkers to show Wang JiYao had the rightist ideas by revealing what he said in the past. No conviction material was attached. The 120 pages consist of more than 10 files including: his registration forms in early 1950s; three impeachment or disclosure files including testimony of co-workers; and five files of his confessions of guilt 70 pages! in 1957. This archive is a particularly interesting encapsulation within one man's experience of a sadly all too typical occasion in mid 20th Century China. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: One online source provides: The Anti-Rightist Movement of the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and early 1960s consisted of a series of campaigns to purge alleged "rightists" within the Communist Party of China CPC and abroad. The definition of "rightists" was not always consistent sometimes including critics to the left of the government but officially referred to those intellectuals who appeared to favour capitalism and class divisions and against collectivization. The campaigns were instigated by Chairman Mao Zedong and saw the political persecution of an estimated 550000. The Anti-Rightist Movement was a reaction against the Hundred Flowers Campaign which had promoted pluralism of expression and criticism of the government. Going perhaps as far back as the Long March there had been resentment against "rightists" inside the CPC for example Zhang Bojun. The first wave of attacks began immediately following the end of the Hundred Flowers movement in July 1957. By the end of the year 300000 people had been labeled as rightists including the writer Ding Ling. Future premier Zhu Rongji then working in the State Planning Commission was purged in 1958. Most of the accused were intellectuals. The penalties included informal criticism "re-education through labour" and in some cases death. One main target was the independent legal system. 1936 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG GREEK AS THE FASCIST REVOLUTION OF METAXAS AND THE GREEK NATIONALISTIC RIGHT ARE ON THE MOVE
GREECE HELLAS 1936. On offer is the unique original 1936 Greek manuscript diary handwritten by a young man we believe named Falagitis an EON member we believe who provides his personal history of the times immediately prior to the notorious '4th of August' Revolution. Over 48 pages of Greek cursive densely written the coverless 6 x 7.5 inch journal- we provide a partial casual translation of the start - begins simply enough: "18 June Sunday even though we are supposed to go the church with the young people I did not go as I was sleepy after the church finished its ceremony then I woke up at the afternoon. At the afternoon Athena came and after we sat for a while we went for a walk towards the station. However we decided it was too early for a walk thus we decided to go to aunt Maria and around evening we left went to the station came home ate and made cheesebread me Teta and Athena then we went again to the aunt. Then we went to the uncle Nigopon to join our walk in the beginning we were alone then he came and with his company we went to the bakery story where he treated us. After we sat enough among many people who sat in all the centrers around the city we left for home with Teta while the uncle left with Athina." In a tight cursive hand the writer details life at the time. Some passages appear more quickly written; certainly a detailed translation is required. Collectors and historians will appreciate this document as a unique relic of a critical political event in pre-World War II Greece. Later than Hitler's manipulations in the early 1930s the August 4th Revolution was a parallel political movement of the Greek Nationalistic Right and not dissimilar than Hitler or Mussolini in Italy. But as with most clones this government's issue was weaker and lasted only 4 years. We believe this diary is evidential to the importance the Regime put indoctrinating the youth of the culture to the nationalistic debate. From an online source we learn with regard to: "The role of youth: the EON brought together youths of all economic and social strata into one single body. Boys' education emphasized discipline and physical training while girls were taught to become supportive wives and caring mothers to breed a stronger healthier new generation. The EON published a fortnight magazine called Neolaia Greek for "Youth" which had much influence both in schools and in higher education. One online source provides background: The 4th of August Regime commonly known as the Metaxas Regime which was an authoritarian regime under the leadership of General Ioannis Metaxas that ruled Greece from 1936 to 1941. There is some debate over how the regime relates to other authoritarian regimes of the era: those of Franco's Spain Italian Fascism and German Nazism. Richard Clogg argues that while the regime had "superficial trappings of Fascism" and Metaxas "did not disguise his admiration for Nazism and Fascism" it is "more correctly categorised as paternalist-authoritarian rather than fascist". Shustoke Warwickshire England 1892. On offer is a super original 19th Century manuscript travel diary in a premium leather bound notebook of about 200 pages of lined paper. Signed and dated 1892 by Henry A. Whitehead on the first page. Research suggests Whitehead was vicar of the village in the mid nineteenth century. The journey starts from Shustoke in Warwickshire via Birmingham to Liverpool where the author with his companion McWilliams boards his first boat The Mareotis at Huskisson Dock bound for Gibraltar Tangiers Algeria Malta Alexandria Ramleh Cairo Aden Zanzibar Mozambique Durban and beyond. This is a very languid look at the life and experiences of a leisured Victorian tourist in North Africa who receives invitations to Governor's parties meets and calls on Colonels and Majors with important jobs who knows the HMS Thunderer and HMS Camperdown when he sees them in harbour visiting the 'Armoury' mentions making many sketches interesting commentary regarding other passenger particulary the German officers after Cairo interesting copy of a King Neptune broadside a guest of the Consul time spent with Churchill and much much more. Whitehead arrived back in England in September the last few months of the diary being devoted to his daily home life. Only the last six pages of the notebook are unused. Covers rubbed at edges. Spine splitting. Internally fine. These daily entries vary in length from just a few lines to several pages and run from January 29th to 31st December of the same year. Overall G. Autograph.
