Ordained at Piacenza Italy in 1802 Andreis was transferred 1806 to Rome where he served as preacher professor of theology and apostle to the poor. While on a visit to Rome in 1815 William Du Bourg the bishop of Louisiana arranged for Andreis to serve his diocese. Andreis was appointed temporary vicar-general and superior of a band of missionaries who embarked for the American missions. After a long delay at the Seminary of St. Thomas in Kentucky where he taught theology Andreis arrived in St. Louis in 1817 and was appointed vicar-general. He was professor and administrator of two colleges one for seminarians and one for laymen and supervised the erection of a novitiate at the Barrens 80 miles 130 km south of St. Louis. Ernest Newlandsmith born 1875 was a British violinist composer and writer with strong Christian belief who formed the Laresol Society to promote artistic vocation of a religious nature. Together with Dr. Ragheb Muftah he was instrumental in noting down and audio recording traditional Coptic church music in the years 1927 to 1936. In 1908 he took vows as a friar and from then until 1928 dressed in a friar's cassock calling himself a "Minstrel of God". Not an autobiography as such but an attempt by the author to give an account of the spiritual changes which have occured during his life. Pp.196/2ads for other publications black & white portrait photo frontispiece 2 further black & white plates all with tissue guards last paragraph on page 169 and final paragraph on page 170 have been pasted to pages but appear to be revisions for this fourth edition notation to title page quotes a review from the original dustwrapper which is sadly absent. New York: Dillingham 1897. Very Good in the publisher's full burgundy cloth. Both the spine and the front panel are stamped in gilt still brilliant. Octavo. 361pps. with numerous black-and-white illustrations -- 20 of them full-page. There is mild bumping to the tips and light touches of soiling to the cloth. Also the page-edges are slightly browned. Modest reading wear including the very sporadic smudge fox-mark or creased page-corner. This item has been recently restored: it has new inner hinges the endpapers are original a tightened spine and new endcaps where there had previously been a bit of fraying to the cloth. It is overall then quite clean and the binding tight with all pages intact. This is an association copy inscribed in a fine calligraphic hand to 'Dr. Cyrus Townsend Brady with compliments of T. F. Rodenbough New York April 6/'03.' It is also inscribed in an only slightly less stylish hand 'with the compliments of the old sergeant Jno. H. Cook.' Brady would of course go on to become a successful and highly-published author of historical and biographical titles his career barely begun at the time of this signing; his works included 'Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West' 'Commodore Paul Jones' 'In the Wasp's Nest' 'Sir Henry Morgan Bucaneer' 'Arizona' and 'Indian Fights and Fighters.' He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1883 and had spent several years in the West seeking adventure and working for the Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific railroads. He later became an ordained deacon in the Episcopal church before resigning to engage in his literary pursuits. The two signers of the book the author Rodenbough and Cook were both recipients of the Medal of Honor for feats of heroism during the Civil War. Rodenbough a horseman served with the 2nd U.S. Cavalry the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry and the 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry; he received his citation for actions at Trevilian Station Virginia. Cook -- on whom a chapter including a couple of sketches is devoted in this book -- was a member of Company A 119th Illinois Infantry; he received his Medal 'for conspicuous bravery at the battle of Pleasant Hill Louisiana April 9th 1864.' A very nice copy of an elusive book -- a collection of true stories concerning the Civil War and the Wild West -- rendered one-of-a-kind with the inscriptions. Rodenbough published a number of Civil War titles and is perhaps best known among collectors for his 'From Everglade To Canon With the Second Dragoons' 1875 a classic piece of nineteenth century American military history. 1802 Printed Almanack with Manuscript Margin Notes and Post-Revolutionary Diary Entries by a Columbia County New York Citizen Including Local and Historical References and Curious Coded Language
Claverack New York. Good with no dust jacket. 1802. Softcover. On offer is a printed almanac from 1802 titled Stoddard's Diary: OR THE COLUMBIA ALMANACK For the Year of our LORD 1802 by Andrew Beers. The Almanack contains 38 printed pages and 20 handwritten pages which constitute a short diary or journal kept by a man from Claverack Columbia County New York. The published content combined with the manuscript additions offer an outstanding glimpse into what people considered important information at the turn of the 19th century. The Almanack which is about the ". Usual and necessary in Compositions of this Nature many Things new useful and entertaining" contains printed sections with notes on human anatomy interest tables lunar almanac for each month of the year a list of officers of the Government of the United States and the State of New York and several essays. The published essays include Respect and Deference Due to the Aged The Fortunate Hindoo The Sham Ghost and What Industry Will Accomplish. Also included are advertisement for the Almanack author's new Land Office and Surveying business. The owner of the Almanack would have authored the 20 handwritten pages though their identity is unknown. The pages contain journal entries which are brief and to the point and place them somewhere in Columbia County NY. Some excerpts: "Died Arron Coffin" Feb 13 1802. "Thomas Fotheringham Nephew to Thomas Fotheringham Esq died after a long tedious and most Painful illness" Feb 25 1802. "Derek Ten Brock son of Jeremiah Ten Brock in a fit of Insanity struck a Negro Boy about 6 years of age and hit him outright and dangerously wounded" Mr. Ten Brock his father" Mar 12 1802. The diarist also notes a general election for Congress in April 1802. Excerpts of some historically relevant entries: "Died Mrs. Martha Washington widow of the late Gen'l George Washington" May 22 1802. "Gen'l Robt V Rensselaer was interred at Claverak with Military Honors" Sep 13 1802. Historical Note: Robert Van Rensselaer was a Colonel and later General in the Albion County Militia and fought on the American side in the American Revolution. He later served in the New York state assembly. A curious addition is the inclusion of what appears to be a code: "the C483stz66its48 Frg3qitz 82362dfg47th 2d261 wigz" Feb 14th 1802. A similar coded notation appears for the entry of Oct 17th. This 1802 Almanack turned journal was kept at a time when many of the chief actors of the American Revolution were still alive and the Republic was still quite young. It would be an excellent resource for a historian especially on studying America at the turn of the 19th century. Condition: Paper bound it measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches. The paper is in very good condition. There is a small burn scar on the leading edge of the pages but it is limited to the blank margin area. The dust jacket has several edge tears nicks and wrinkled spots mostly to the spine ends and some small edge chips missing. This book written by Henry Pu Yi and edited by Paul Kramer was the basis for the movie The Last Emperor and tells the story of the boy who became emperor of China at age 2 or 3 when using Chinese dating lived for nearly twenty years in the Forbidden City before being expelled and imprisoned by the Soviets and Red Chinese. "The Xuantong Emperor 7 February 1906 – 17 October 1967 better known by his personal name Puyi was the last emperor of China as the eleventh and final monarch of the Qing dynasty. He was later ruler of the puppet state of Manchukuo under the Empire of Japan from 1934 to 1945. He became emperor at the age of two in 1908 but was forced to abdicate at the age of six in 1912 during the Xinhai Revolution. His era name as Qing emperor Xuantong means "proclamation of unity". Puyi was briefly restored to the throne as Qing emperor by the loyalist General Zhang Xun from 1 July to 12 July 1917. He was first wed to Empress Wanrong in 1922 in an arranged marriage. In 1924 he was expelled from the Forbidden City and found refuge in Tianjin where he began to court both the warlords fighting for hegemony over China and the Japanese who had long desired control of China. In 1932 after the Japanese invasion of Manchuria the puppet state of Manchukuo was established by Japan and he was chosen to become the chief executive of the new state using the era name of "Datong".
