‎Grim, Ralph Early; Foreword by Frances E Grim‎

‎Memoirs of Ralph Early Grim‎

‎No place but Champaign Illinois: Privately Printed 1991. Very scarce said to be limited to only 6 copies. Appears unread. Fine condition. NOT a library discard. A bright clean square tight copy. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are fresh crisp and unmarked. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Oversize Hardcover. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall by 1.75" thick. Posthumously printed memoirs of Ralph Early Grim 1902-1989 geologist and Research Professor Emeritus Department of Geology University of Illinois Urbana. The February 2009 newsletter of THE CLAY MINERALS SOCIETY photocopy laid-in contains a tribute to Grim from the University of New Mexico's Dewey Moore. In it Moore writes: "The contrast between his rather humble origins and his lofty reputation as a scientist and world traveler was perhaps the stimulant for him to write his memoirs. After his death his wife Frances E. Grim had them transcribed and a few perhaps 6 copies bound. The original copy of MEMOIRS OF RALPH EARLY GRIM is in the University of Illinois Main Library archives; one copy rests in the Clay Minerals Society's archives." Handsomely bound in the original maroon pebble-grain full leather stamped in shiny gold on the spine and front cover. From Dewey Moore's tribute: "In 1951 Grim shifted to the University of Illinois Geology Department. From this base Grim put his mark on the clay minerals profession: guidance at the 1951 meeting in St. Louis that served as the incubation for what was to become The Clay Minerals Society; his 1953 publication of CLAY MINERALOGY; and the publication of his APPLIED CLAY MINERALOGY 1962. From this point on most of us are familiar with Ralph Grim's history. His books proved to be the vehicles that carried clay science into maturity as a discipline. His professional activities led to many accolades from his peers. The ultimate honor for a mineralogist is to be awarded the Roebling Medal by the Mineralogical Society of America. Ralph Grim accepted this award in 1974. For what could be called the corresponding award for consulting the Ivory Coast in western Africa bestowed on Professor Grim in 1973 the title of Chevalier Knight. Ralph Grim earned this highest honor for a non-citizen for developing local professionals to take over the duties of the Ivory Coast Geological Survey during his 15 visits to the country and for discovering a huge iron deposit in the western part of the country." ‎Thorburn, Grant; [ie Lawrie Todd]; Thomas Paine i e‎

‎Forty Years' Residence in America : or the Doctrine of a Particular Providence Exemplified in the Life of Grant Thorburn Seedsman New York‎

‎Boston: Russell Odiorne & Metcalf 1834. This is the 1834 first edition -- not a cheaply-made modern reprint. Good condition. SEE PHOTOS. NOT a library discard. Rebound in green cloth probably in first half of 20th century. Old damp stain on several pages. Light scattered foxing. Square and tight. Sharp corners. Hinges are perfect. 4.5" wide by 7.5" tall. Born in Scotland in 1773 Thorburn learned from his father to make nails and became an expert. In 1794 he immigrated to New York as he says in the Preface "with only three cents in my pocket and my nail-hammer in my hand." Thorburn immediately found employment in that profession the nature of the nail-making business is described here in detail. Soon however the invention of the nail-cutting machine deprived him of an occupation. He went to work as a grocer and became interested in plants. When purchasing his first plant he claims that he "knew not a geranium from a cabbage." But by 1803 according to the DAB he "became the first seedsman of any consequence in America and came to found a business that functioned for more than a century." In 1812 Thorburn issued the first seed catalogue in American history. Among the events from his life described here are providential escapes a scene at sea and accounts of the New York yellow fever epidemic in 1822. Thorburn also took to writing having assumed "Lawrie Todd" as a pen name. His collective successes allowed him to indulge his propensity for mingling with the rich and famous. According to the DAB Thorburn "jeopardized his standing with his church by cultivating an acquaintance with Thomas Paine" author of COMMON SENSE. Thorburn includes here a number of Paine anecdotes including one about Paine's narrow escape from execution in France and the remarks Paine made on his death-bed. There is a 17-page appendix of correspondence between Paine and William Carver. Another appendix is entitled "Hints to Gardeners Wishing to Emigrate to the United States." Thorburn "was very proud of being the original of the hero of John Galt's LAWRIE TODD the first novel with Rochester New York for its setting." -- Sabin 95610. Howes T-219. First Edition. Hardcover. ‎Clinton, Bill‎

‎My Life First State/First Printing with requisite typo‎

‎New York: Alfred A. Knopf 2004. Brand New in a Brand New dust jacket. PERFECT condition. A gorgeous pristine copy of the true First State/First Printing with "First Edition" so stated and the requisite typo: "for the failure of my life" in the last sentence of the Acknowledgements later corrected to "failures". Bright shiny clean square and tight. Sharp corners. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped $35.00. No chips. No tears. No rubbing. Protected by a removable Brodart clear plastic sleeve. No owner's name or bookplate. Not a remainder. Pages are fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. Illustrated with 32 pages of photos. Bound in the original blue boards lettered in shiny gilt on the spine and with "William J. Clinton" blindstamped on the front cover. From the dust jacket: "President Bill Clinton's MY LIFE is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts and his extraordinary capacity for hard work to serving the public. It shows us the progress of a remarkable American who through his own enormous energies and efforts made the unlikely journey from Hope Arkansas to the White House -- a journey fueled by an impassioned interest in the political process which manifested itself at every stage of his life: in college working as an intern for Senator William Fulbright; at Oxford becoming part of the Vietnam War protest movement; at Yale Law School campaigning on the grassroots level for Democratic candidates; back in Arkansas running for Congress attorney general and governor. We see his career shaped by his resolute determination to improve the life of his fellow citizens an unfaltering commitment to civil rights and an exceptional understanding of the practicalities of political life. We come to understand the emotional pressures of his youth -- born after his father's death; caught in the dysfunctional relationship between his feisty nurturing mother and his abusive stepfather whom he never ceased to love and whose name he took; drawn to the brilliant compelling Hillary Rodham whom he was determined to marry; passionately devoted from her infancy to their daughter Chelsea and to the entire experience of fatherhood; slowly and painfully beginning to comprehend how his early denial of pain led him at times into damaging patterns of behavior. President Clinton's book is also the fullest most concretely detailed most nuanced account of a presidency ever written -- encompassing not only the high points and crises but the way the presidency actually works: the day-to-day bombardment of problems personalities conflicts setbacks achievements. It is a testament to the positive impact on America and on the world of his work and his ideals. It is the gripping account of a president under concerted and unrelenting assault orchestrated by his enemies on the Far Right and how he survived and prevailed.". ‎Carrington, Margaret Irvin [nee Sullivant], 1831-1870‎

‎Ab-sa-ra-ka Home of the Crows bound in GENUINE LEATHER‎

‎Alexandria Virginia: Time Life Books 1984. A beautiful copy. Fine condition. Bright clean square and tight. No corner bumps. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Fresh and crisp apparently never read. Handsomely bound in full brown leather that is gilt stamped and embossed with a western motif/cattle longhorn design. The binding on this copy is GENUINE LEATHER superior to the cheaper leatherette imitation leather found on later printings. Although at first glance leatherette can look a lot like leather it does not age as gracefully in the long run. Printed on one of the book's preliminary pages is the following statement: "This volume is bound in leather." Laid-in is the publisher's introductory letter which also says in part: "This leather-bound volume." These references to leather were removed later for the imitation leather copies. A volume in the Classics of the Old West series. According to Colton Storm this is "An excellent personal account fortified by invaluable additional material from the author's husband Colonel Henry B. Carrington." - # 596 in A CATALOGUE OF THE EVERETT D. GRAFF COLLECTION OF WESTERN AMERICANA. "The most valuable portion of the book is that in which she gives the personal narrations of some restored captives scarcely to be deemed happy in surviving the awful massacres of their families. They were all married women who having witnessed the slaughter of their husbands and children were reserved by the savages for a worse fate. It is now well known that although the Algonquin and Iroquois tribes never violated their female captives the Indians of the plains almost invariably subject them to the most horrible personal outrages." - Thomas W. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a book club edition. Pages are fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. With 32 pages of illustrations including 8 pages in full color. "First Edition" is so stated with complete number row 10 987654321 on the copyright page. Bound in the publisher's black cloth. From the dust jacket: "The Marchesa Luisa Casati was Europe's most notorious celebrity and its most eccentric. For the first three decades of the twentieth century she astounded the continent. Nude servants gilded in gold leaf attended her. Bizarre wax mannequins sat as guests at her dining table. She wore live snakes as jewelry and she was infamous for her evening strolls naked beneath her furs parading cheetahs on diamond-studded leashes. She traveled to Venice Rome Capri and Paris -- collecting palaces and a menagerie of exotic animals. Her outlandish homes became the setting for some of the century's most outrageous parties. Artists painted and sculpted her poets praised her strange beauty and fashion designers fought for her patronage. Among those she captivated were Gabriele D'Annunzio Man Ray Augustus John Erté Kees Van Dongen Jean Cocteau Cecil Beaton and Jack Kerouac. Some became lovers others awestruck admirers but all were influenced by this extraordinary muse. Then the extravagance ended. By 1930 Casati was over twenty-five million dollars in debt. Her wealth gone she fled to London where she spent her last years supported by family and friends and as eccentric as ever. Even today nearly a half century after her death Casati still fascinates. She has been played on stage by Vivien Leigh and on screen by Ingrid Bergman. And recently her flamboyant memory inspired a couture collection for Christian Dior. Explored in detail for the first time this is the story of the Marchesa Luisa Casati. Prepare to be astonished." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. ‎Zola, Emile; (translated and edited by Ernest Alfred Vizetelly)‎

‎Fruitfulness : Fecondite‎

‎New York: Doubleday Page & Co. 1900. A bright clean square tight copy. Inner hinges are perfect. Previous owner's ink name and date June 7 1900 on the front endpaper. Bound in the original green cloth. Gilt titles on the spine and front cover are still bright and shiny. Top edge gilt. From the Translator's Preface: "FRUITFULNESS is the first of a series of four works in which M. Zola proposes to embody what he considered to be the four cardinal principles of human life." Respectively Zola's Quatre Évangiles four gospels were to feature principal characters named Matthew Mark Luke and John. Zola finished only 3 of them: Fécondité 1899 tr. FRUITFULNESS 1900; Travail 1901 tr. LABOR 1901; and Vérité published posthumously 1903 tr. TRUTH 1903. The final book JUSTICE was not completed at the time of Zola's death in 1902 of carbon monoxide poisoning from a stopped-up chimney. Although nothing was ever proved many people believed he had been murdered. After all Zola had made plenty of enemies as a result of his role in France's notorious Dreyfus Affair. Alfred Dreyfus a Jewish army captain was convicted of espionage and sent to Devil's Island. In 1898 Zola risked his life and career in defense of Dreyfus by accusing the French government of anti-Semitism and wrongful imprisonment. The catalyst was Zola's letter "J'accuse" published on the front page of a Paris newspaper L'AURORE. Less than 6 weeks later Zola found himself convicted of libel sentenced and removed from the Legion of Honor. To avoid prison Zola had to temporarily flee to England. Dreyfus was eventually pardoned and in 1906 exonerated by the Supreme Court. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good condition/No jacket. 8vo. ix 487pp. Doubleday, Page & Co. Hardcover‎

‎O'Suilleabhain, Micheal; Foreword by Daniel Corkery‎

‎Where Mountainy Men Have Sown War and Peace in Rebel Cork in the Turbulent Years 1916-1921‎

‎Tralee: Anvil Books 1965. Very Good condition. Bright clean tight square and unmarked. Flat spine. No owner's name or bookplate. Not a remainder. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Autobiography of an IRA man. Chronicles the social and military aspects of the war of independence in Ireland. Details his role and that of his brother Pat. Micheal O'Suilleabhain defends his unit's activities: "We burned no house occupied by a civilian loyalist or otherwise" but admits: "in other areas it is true that the IRA reacted to this army activity by burning loyalist homes." Bound in the original pictorial wraps. From the rear cover: "Through mountain passes and along the beds of creeks Micheal O'Suilleabhain takes us to attack an armed police patrol here or to plan a large-scale engagement there against the elite of Britain's specially recruited fighting forces in Ireland - the famous Auxiliaries - all ex-commissioned officers and to a man much decorated veterans of world war one. The rank smell of cordite and the smoke and dust of battle on rock-bordered roads are in this book. But in it too is heard the beating of the hearts of the mountainy men. Through it rings the gay laughter of its comely young women and the warm affection of parents sons and daughters in the mountain homes of Muskerry. It was inevitable that Micheal O'Suilleabhain and his people should rally to the armed struggle for freedom with an all-embracing dedication. They comprehended perhaps better than most areas in the country the fundamental causes that led to 1916 and to the War of Independence. And from the ranks of their fighting men has come a chronicler of competence and talent to tell their story as few others could have told it. Here is the place the time the man and the writer - a rare and fortunate combination indeed.". First Edition Paperback Original - PBO. Mass Market Paperback.
