He led a life of burglary vagrancy homelessness and served a two-year prison term ending up "down and out" on New York City's Bowery row living in various flophouses. His life turned around when he received help from a missionary outreach worker and Ranney became sober in 1892. He ended up reuniting with his estranged wife and son and doing mission work himself.
