First edition, complete 3-volume set. Half leather bound, with marbled paper sides, endpapers and pageblock. Spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering and decorations and title pieces. The boardcovers reflect flaws commensurate with the shelf life and handling of volumes of this age; bumped corners, worn leather, and some small tears and creasing. Vol.III front board is almost detached from the spine, but still present. Each volume features 2 bookplates; the first, a small circular plate, depicts a kneeling camel beneath a Latin inscription; the second depicts an arm sheathed in armour, holding three ears of corn, beneath a Latin inscription. This bookplate owner is identified as Henry M Ryland. Vol 1 has a small pencilled annotation to FEP reverse, stating the vignettes within are by Sir John Gilbert. Additionally, Vol 1 features a printed inscription from W.H Maxwell to Queen Victoria, recognising her permission for this work. Each volume features a tissue protected frontis and further sketches, portaits and maps are included within the body of each volume. Foxing is present, along with other blemishes and marks as expected in a publication of this age. The binding is tight, the paper is of beautiful quality, and the text within appears as unread.
