First edition of this useful and scarce biography. In 1860, Gresham was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives, with the start of the Civil War he secured a commission in the 38th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He then was promoted to Colonel and given command of the 53rd Indiana Regiment. He and the 53rd were sent to join General Ulysses S. Grant's army. He fought at Corinth; through the Mississippi operations and the fall of Vicksburg; at Kenesaw Mountain, and Leggett's Hill, where he was wounded by a Sharpshooter By the end of the Civil War, he had attained the rank of Major General. Gresham became a federal judge and served as a member of three presidential cabinets. Under President Chester Arthur, Gresham was Postmaster General and Secretary of the Treasury. In 1892, he was named Secretary of State by President Grover Cleveland. He served in that position until his death in 1895. Very good. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SHELF W27‎

Chevalier Henry Wikoff (1813-1884) was a cosmopolitan, globe-trotting rogue, professional gossip, amateur undercover reporter for the New York Herald, and a close member of the circle around Mrs. Lincoln. Charles Rogers (1825-1890) was a Scottish minister and author. He was chaplain of the garrison at historic Stirling Castle (1855-1863). He inaugurated (in 1855) at Stirling a short-lived Scottish Literary Institute. In 1862 he opened the British Christian Institute, for the dissemination of religious tracts, especially to soldiers and sailors, and in connection with it he issued a weekly paper, called `The Workman's Friend,' and afterwards monthly serials, `The Briton' and `The Recorder;' but the scheme collapsed in 1863. In 1863 he founded and edited a newspaper, `The Stirling Gazette,' but its career was brief. These schemes involved Rogers in much contention and litigation, and he imagined himself the victim of misrepresentation and persecution. To escape his calumniators he resigned his chaplaincy in 1863, went to England, and thenceforth devoted himself to literary work. His literary efforts in London were journalistic, but Scottish history, literature, and genealogy were throughout his life the chief studies of his leisure, and his researches in these subjects, to which he mainly devoted his later years, proved of value. He originated in London a short-lived Naval and Military Tract Society, as a successor to his British Christian Institute, and in connection with it he edited a quarterly periodical called `The British Bulwark.' When that society's existence terminated, he set up `The London Book and Tract Depository,' which he carried on until 1874. A more interesting and sucessful venture was Rogers's Grampian Club (1868), for the issue of works illustrative of Scottish literature, history, and antiquities. ENGLAND BOX 1‎

During the two years of his first visit to England (1853-1855) he delivered 438 lectures and travelled 23,224 miles; during the three years (1857-1860) of his second, he gave 605 lectures and travelled 40,217 miles. No other speaker on the temperance question had ever so fully gained the public ear.
