So said the poet WH Auden to Lizzie Spender's father when Lizzie was eight. Auden backed up his words with a cheque for GBP 50 but the horse never happened. Years later fate presented her with a horse. But fate had been dramatic - it was a wild horse that she'd seen from a helicopter above the red earth of the Kimberley - the ancient remote uninhabited north-west of Australia. The owner of the cattle station told Lizzie to consider it hers but Lizzie decided it wasn't enough to know her horse was out there. She wanted to go back and find her horse catch it train it transport it thousands of miles home to Sydney. She turned that dream into a reality in an extraordinary adventure. It was tough frustrating and beset with difficulties: an unpunctual horse-whisperer an Australian outback full of wild creatures the sheer mechanics of building the yards. But it was also a unique opportunity in which she got to know the wild horses watched the horse whisperer achieve miracles and took two horses on an arduous journey back to 'civilisation'. From the thrilling epiphany of achieving her dream to the subtle satisfaction of conquering her doubts this is an inspirational tale alive with the character of the Australian outback one of the last remaining wildernesses. Ludwig Van Beethoven
Beethoven's Letters
Dover Publications USA 1972. Medium Trade Paperback. Fair. Medium Trade Paperback. 410 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Dover Publications USA 1972. CONDITION: This book is in fair condition. More specifically: Covers have heavy creasing. Edges of covers have moderate edgewear and corners are moderately bumped. Spine has minimal reading creases and slight fading. . Edges of pages are lightly browned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Ludwig van Beethoven 1770-1827 the protagonist of freedom for music disentangled music from the control of the ruling class. In publishing his music and writing for the rising classes Beethoven claimed freedom and expressed the emotions of the new rulers the artists. The Eroica Fidelio and the piano works express the emotions of the new rulers - the intense love the need for companionship of people the forces that conspired to defeat the artist and the strength and superiority of the artist in overcoming the weaknesses. The letters of Beethoven are the principal nonmusical expression of his personality in its relationship with the world of his time. In what he called the "dry letters of the alphabet" Beethoven depicted his fears his loves and his friendly relations: his fears of deafness and of corrupted texts by pirating printers; his loves Bettina Brentano and Giulietta Guicciardi; and his friendly relations with Baron Zmeskall Frau Nannette Streicher and the music publishers Steiner and Company. He praises the poetry of Goethe and Schiller but condemns Goethe for his obeisance toward royalty. He solicits help during his perpetual trouble with his health and with his servants. He castigates publishers sets prices for his works and calculates letters of dedication. He expresses his love for his nephew Carl but documents the trouble that Carl was causing him by taking up his precious time. And although Beethoven liked to decorate the letters with musical openings and closings and an occasional song to the receiver he increasingly signed his letters "In haste." The 457 letters collected here are the most important of the letters of the spirit that was to shape and move a century. Explanatory notes comment upon works on persons mentioned and on the puns of which Beethoven was fond. The letters chronicle his business his needs his humor and bitterness and his philosophy. They will give many insights into Beethoven's methods his influences his moods and the conditions under which the master worked. Quantity Available: 1. Simon Goodman
The Orpheus Clock : The Search for My Familys Art Treasures Stolen by the Nazis
Scribe Australia 2015. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Trade Paperback. 353 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Scribe Australia 2015. CONDITION: This book is in very good condition. More specifically: Covers have light creasing. Corners of covers are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. . Edges of pages are lightly browned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Simon Goodman's grandparents came from German-Jewish banking dynasties and perished in concentration camps. That's almost all he knew about them his father rarely spoke of their family history or heritage. But when he passed away and Simon received his father's old papers a story began to emerge. The Gutmanns rose from a small Bohemian hamlet to become one of Germany's most powerful banking families. They also amassed a magnificent world-class art collection that included works by Degas Renoir Botticelli Guardi and many many others. But the Nazi regime snatched from them everything they had worked to build: their remarkable art their immense wealth their prominent social standing and their very lives. Simon grew up in London with little knowledge of his father's efforts to recover their family's prized possessions. It was only after his father's death that Simon began to piece together the clues about the Gutmanns' stolen legacy and the Nazi looting machine. Through painstaking detective work across two continents Simon has been able to prove that many works belonged to his family and to successfully secure their return. Goodman's dramatic story told with great heart reveals a rich family history almost obliterated by the Nazis. It is not only the account of a twenty-year long detective hunt for family treasure but an unforgettable tale of redemption and restoration. Quantity Available: 1. Andrew Taylor
The World of Gerald Mercetor : The Mapmaker Who Revolutionised Geography
Collins UK 2004. Medium Trade Paperback. Very Good. Medium Trade Paperback. 291 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Collins UK 2004. CONDITION: This book is in very good condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing. Corners of covers are lightly bumped. Spine has minimal reading creases. . Edges of pages are lightly browned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: In The World of Gerard Mercator Andrew Taylor chronicles both the story of a great astronomer and mathematician who was condemned to death as a heretic and the history of that most fascinating conjunction of science and art: the drawing of maps. Gerard Mercator was born in Flanders in 1512. In addition to creating accurate globes of the earth and the stars he was the first person to use latitude and longitude for navigation and he created the most-used map of all time: Mercators Projection is still the standard view of the world the one we all envisage when we think of a map of the globe. Simply finding the best solution to the impossible challenge of reproducing the spherical world on a flat sheet of paper was a considerable achievement in itself something geographers and map-makers had been trying to do for centuries but Mercator also created the map of the world that would form the basis of the modern age an image of the continents for the common man. Until Mercators Projection maps offered a pictorial encyclopaedia to an illiterate world and that world stretched far beyond the knowledge and travels of most mapmakers. It is this evolution of mapmaking from art to science that forms the backdrop to the story of Mercator from the days of Herodotus and Strabo when fabulous creatures were supposed to inhabit the fringes of the world to the great mappae mundi of Hereford and Ebsdorf. The Greek geographer Pytheas claimed to have visited the far north of Britain to establish the limits of the habitable world; but further north he claimed that the earth air and sea coalesced into a jellyfish-like gelatinous suspension that made life impossible. He was almost the only senior Allied general to emerge in 1918 from the agony of the Western front with his reputation virtually unspotted. A Jew he spent his energies lavishly on the public affairs of his native Australia his immense prestige at the service of many great causes. Jack Repcheck
The Man Who Found Time : James Hutton and the Discovery of Earth's Antiquity
Perseus Publishing USA 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Hardcover. 247 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Perseus Publishing USA 2003. First Edition. CONDITION: The book itself is in fine condition and comes in fine dust jacket. More specifically: Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is unclipped. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. ABOUT THIS BOOK: There are three men whose contributions helped free science from the straitjacket of theology. Two of the three - Nicolaus Copernicus and Charles Darwin - are widely known and heralded for their breakthroughs. The third James Hutton never received the same recognition yet he profoundly changed our understanding of the earth and its dynamic forces. Hutton proved that the earth was likely millions of years old rather than the biblically determined six thousand and that it was continuously being shaped and re-shaped by myriad everyday forces rather than one cataclysmic event. In this expertly crafted narrative Jack Repcheck tells the remarkable story of this Scottish gentleman farmer and how his simple observations on his small tract of land led him to a theory that was in direct confrontation with the Bible and that also provided the scientific proof that would spark Darwin's theory of evolution. It is also the story of Scotland and the Scottish Enlightenment which brought together some of the greatest thinkers of the age from David Hume and Adam Smith to James Watt and Erasmus Darwin. Finally it is a story about the power of the written word. Repcheck argues that Hutton's work was lost to history because he could not describe his findings in graceful and readable prose. Unlike Darwin's Origin of the Species Hutton's one and only book was impenetrable. A marvelous narrative about a little-known man and the science he founded The Man Who Found Time is also a parable about the power of books to shape the history of ideas. Quantity Available: 1. Hugues De Montalembert
Invisible: A Memoir

CONDITION: The book itself is in near fine condition and comes in very good dust jacket. More specifically: Edges of boards have superficial wear. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is unclipped. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Pages are in excellent condition - no creasing or marks. Dust jacket has light soiling. Dust Jacket is un-clipped. Minor edgewear to covers. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The impressionistic memoir of an artist who was blinded in a sudden act of violence leading to a profound meditation on what it means to see and be seen 'You live in a city like New York. You read the papers. You look at the television. But you never think it will happen to you. It happened to me one evening'. One summer night in 1978 Hugues de Montalembert returned home to his New York City apartment to find two men robbing him. In a violent struggle one of the assailants threw paint thinner in Hugues' face. Within a few hours he was completely blind. Eloquent and provocative Invisible moves beyond the horrific events of that night to what happened to Hugues after he lost his sight: his rehabilitation his solo travels around the world and the remarkable way he learned to 'see' even without the use of his eyes. Without a trace of self-pity Hugues describes his transition from an up-and-coming painter to a blind man who had to learn to walk with a cane. His status changed in the eyes of other people as their reactions ranged from avoidance to making him their confidant. Hugues travelled to faraway places and learned to trust strangers and find himself at home in any situation. Part philosophy part autobiography part inspiration Invisible will change the way you view the world. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Biography & Autobiography; ISBN/EAN: 9781416593669. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Voted the greatest English cricketer of the 20th century by the fans Sir Ian Botham is the English game's one true living legend and his story both on and off the pitch reads like a Boy's Own rollercoaster ride. Born with a natural genius for the game Botham began breaking records with bat and ball from a young age and soon became the man English cricket expected most from. After a troubled period as captain Botham rose once again to become a national hero with his display in the Miracle Ashes of 1981. But with his confrontational nature and wild streak he began regularly making the wrong kind of headlines. With accusations of drink and drugs affairs and ball-tampering he became hounded by the tabloid pack never sure whether they wanted him to triumph or implode.
