‎Searching for JoaquÌn myth, Murieta, and history in California‎

‎Octavo in grey color illus DJ, xii, 185 pages, 24 cm. "On a hot July morning in 1853, a gunfight between lawmen and bandits broke out on the western edge of the San Joaquin Valley, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. When the smoke cleared, Joaquin Murieta, one of the most notorious figures of the Gold Rush, was dead. Soon his severed head was traveling around the new state of California in a pickling jar, inspiring a myth that continues to grow today." "A penetrating inquiry into the life and times of this famous badman, Searching for Joaquin also probes the role that Murieta played in the creation of the myth of old Hispanic California - that lazy, sunlit land of missions and ranchos, plazas and fiestas, high passion and derring-do. As Thornton shows, Murieta continues to play multiple roles today: the chivalric outlaw who settles conflict with violence; the embodiment of a simpler world where life is lived more passionately; and most of all, the avenging angel who rectifies Anglo misdeeds against powerless Hispanics." "Searching for Joaquin is a classic piece of literary detective work, making the vanished past come alive again. In addition to opening a window onto a bygone time, Bruce Thornton shows how myth and history flow in and out of each other and affect the way we live now. Bruce Thornton teaches classics and humanities at California State University at Fresno."--BOOK JACKET. ‎Taylor, Paul Beekman‎

‎Gurdjieff and Orage brothers in Elysium‎

‎Tan octavo, xvii, 269 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates, b&w illustrations, portraits, 21 cm. In 1922, at the age of 49, A. R. Orage left behind his brilliant career as editor of The New Age to work with G. I. Gurdjieff in France. He hoped to increase his moral and psychological powers in order to better serve the world at large, and England in particular. Orage went to Gurdjieff to find a way to convince others the value of an economic scheme that would harmonize industrial production, the flow of capital, and consumer capacities. He had not anticipated falling in love with a young American heiress, Jessie Dwight, while representing Gurdjieff in New York. From 1924 until the end of Orage's life, Jessie fought Gurdjieff for possession of Orage, while Orage did his best to stay aloof from the conflict. It is commonly assumed that Orage and Gurdjieff parted ways in early 1931 because of Jessie. But, as this book reveals, he and Gurdjieff both thought that it was time for him to resume his editing career, fortified with Gurdjieff's teaching. Orage did more in New York than represent Gurdjieff's interests. He taught his own psychological exercises and tutored a number of promising American writers. Most significantly, he stirred interest in Social Credit as a possible solution to the financial depression that gripped American and worldwide economies in the 1930s. Paul Beekman Taylor's engrossing account of the relationship between these two larger-than-life figures is informed by both rigorous scholarship and his own relationship with Gurdjieff." -- Publisher's description. Contents: 1873-1922: The mystic of Fleet Street -- 1922-1923: Orage's tale of two cities -- 1924: New York City: the land made abundant -- 1924: Jessie Dwight at Ch‚teau Gurdjieff -- 1924-1926: The book of life -- 1927-1929: No axe but truth to grind -- 1930-1931: Orage's agony with Gurdjieff -- 1932-1934: Between beasts and God -- Orage's legacy: journalism, occultism, and economy -- Gurdjieff and Orage on being, knowing, and loving -- Epilogue: mentors and stewards. ‎Malcolm X a life of reinvention‎

‎Large octavo in white DJ, b&w portrait to front DJ, 594 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates, b&w illustrations, 25 cm. DJ protected in archival mylar sleeve. || This biography of Malcolm X draws on new research to trace his life from his troubled youth through his involvement in the Nation of Islam, his activism in the world of Black Nationalism, and his assassination. Years in the making, it is a definitive biography of the legendary black activist. Of the great figures in twentieth-century American history perhaps none is more complex and controversial than Malcolm X. Constantly rewriting his own story, he became a criminal, a minister, a leader, and an icon, all before being felled by assassins' bullets at age thirty-nine. Through his tireless work and countless speeches he empowered hundreds of thousands of black Americans to create better lives and stronger communities while establishing the template for the self-actualized, independent African American man. In death he became a broad symbol of both resistance and reconciliation for millions around the world. Filled with new information and shocking revelations that go beyond the Autobiography of Malcolm X, this work unfolds a story of race and class in America, from the rise of Marcus Garvey and the Ku Klux Klan to the struggles of the civil rights movement in the fifties and sixties. Reaching into Malcolm's troubled youth, it traces a path from his parents' activism through his own engagement with the Nation of Islam, charting his astronomical rise in the world of Black Nationalism and culminating in the never-before-told true story of his assassination. This work captures the story of one of the most singular forces for social change, a man who constantly strove, in the great American tradition, to remake himself anew. ‎Fong-Torres, Ben‎

‎The rice room growing up Chinese-American : from number two son to rock 'n' roll‎

‎Large octavo in grey DJ, b&w illus to front DJ, x, 260 pages, 25 cm. DJ protected in archival mylar sleeve. || The Rice Room is a brilliant and moving memoir of growing up in Oakland's Chinatown, by one of America's preeminent journalists. Ben Fong-Torres was the third child of first-generation Chinese parents. His father came to America via the Philippines, adding "Torres" to his name to convince immigration officials that he was Filipino, since there were strict limits on the number of Chinese immigrants that were allowed. His mother came into the country under similarly deceptive circumstances. Together they set up a life that did not include outsiders, and they assumed that their children would share their views. But for Ben and his siblings, including older brother and Number One Son Barry, this was never an option. As youngsters, they loved exploring the sights and sounds of their immediate neighborhood, and spent much of their time working and studying in the rice room of their family restaurant, isolated from outsiders. But going to an American school made them aware of an entirely different world, and soon Ben and Barry were shocking their parents by reciting American song lyrics, reading American comic books, and even listening to forbidden rock and roll lp's. At age twelve, Ben went with his father to Amarillo, Texas, to open a restaurant. There he was thrown into a strange new community, many of whose members had never laid eyes upon an Asian person before. Ben combatted his loneliness by hard work, learning to lip-synch to Elvis, and tentatively making a few friends, ignoring the comments of those such as his gym teacher, who called him "Chop-Chop." By the time he returned to Oakland, he was much more aware of how the rest of the country might view his family, and he was more determined than ever to have a piece of the American pie. Working in the detested rice room made Ben and his siblings realize how much was expected of them as Chinese sons and daughters. Yet Ben continued to be obedient, at least on the surface - in the meantime holding down newspaper writing jobs at increasingly radical papers, including the daily Golden Gator at Berkeley, where he covered the nascent protest movement. Ironically, even as he tried to communicate in halting Cantonese with his parents, who never mastered English, he was becoming an important part of the American mainstream. Upon graduation from college he joined the staff of a fledgling magazine called Rolling Stone, and joined the group of people who chronicled and came to define the 1960s counterculture, partying with Jann Wenner and Hunter Thompson, and interviewing Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Jefferson Airplane, and scores of other seminal musicians of the era. Then tragedy struck - and Ben had to learn that family came first, no matter how backward at times they seemed. The Rice Room is riveting personal history of the most moving and engaging kind - a story of growing up in this country that readers of all backgrounds will want to experience. ‎Lapidus, Morris‎

‎Too much is never enough‎

‎Quarto in blue illus DJ, 304 pages, chiefly b&w illustrations (some b&w), 26 cm. DJ protected in archival mylar sleeve. || American architect Morris Lapidus is best known as the designer of glamorous postwar resort hotels in Florida, such as the Fontainebleau (1954) and the Eden Roc (1955) in Miami Beach, and the Americana in Bal Harbour (1956). Yet in a remarkable sixty-year career that began in 1926, he designed more than 500 retail stores, hotels, apartment complexes, and stage sets that captured the popular spirit and changing face of Main Street America in the twentieth century. Lapidus created fantasy environments in which America's middle class, flush with expanding postwar incomes and optimism, could fulfill its desire for glamor, relaxed luxury, and leisure. His signature forms - chevrons, "beanpoles," "woggles," or amoeba shapes, and curving walls and ceilings punctuated by "cheese holes," or cutouts - have become treasured icons of American postwar vernacular architecture. Born in Russia in 1902, Lapidus was brought to New York by his parents a year later, and the family first settled on the Lower East Side. He completed his architecture degree at Columbia University and first earned a reputation by designing stage sets and retail stores in which he developed new theories in store design and essentially created the modern storefront as we now know it. For his famed resort hotels of the 1950s Lapidus designed not only the vast structures but a melange of quasi-French provincial and Italian Renaissance decorative elements that critics would dub "Miami Beach French," including everything from the tableware to his famous "stairways to nowhere." He was one of the first architects to acknowledge the cinema as an overriding influence on American taste. Architects -- United States -- Biography.‎

‎Dedicato a¿ Loredana Berté!‎
