BBC Books UK 2018. Trade Paperback. Good. Trade Paperback. 282 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: BBC Books UK 2018. CONDITION: This book is in good condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing. Edges of covers have superficial edgewear and corners are moderately bumped. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Accompanying a new BBC series legendary comic and national treasure Billy Connolly returns to his roots reflecting on his life his homeland and what it means - then and now - to be Scottish. All roads lead home. 'After my knighthood was announced a woman from the BBC came to Glasgow to interview me. We sat down in a lovely hotel in a nice part of town and she hit me with her first question- "This must mean a lot to you with you coming from nothing" I looked at her and I laughed. "I did'nae come from nothing" I told her. "I come from something." I grew up in the tenements of post-war Glasgow. I am very proud to be working class and especially a working-class Glaswegian who has worked in the shipyards. I come from the working class. And most of all I come from Scotland. Scotland is a unique and wonderful place. Its national motto says a lot about it- Nemo me impune lacessit. A decent translation might be- 'By all means punch me in the nose but prepare yourself for a kick in the arse.' I did'nae come from nothing- I come from Scotland. And this book is about why I will always be happy and proud that I do.' Quantity Available: 1. Category: Biography & Autobiography; ISBN/EAN: 9781785943737. The Diary Of A Young Girl

More specifically: Covers have no creasing or wear. Spine is uncreased. . Edges of pages are reasonably browned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt-am-Main Germany on 12th June 1929 the second child of Otto and Edith Frank. In 1933 Hitler had come to power and was taking more and more measures against the Jews. The Frank family feared what the future might hold if they stayed in Germany. When Otto received an offer to start a new company in Amsterdam the family decided to move to the Netherlands. Anne was a lively and fun-loving little girl who had lots of friends. She went to a Montessori school with her sister Margot also extremely bright and clever. In 1940 Hitler invaded the Netherlands and gradually imposed their restrictions on the Jews. Otto transferred his business to his trusted colleagues Johannes Kleiman and Victor Kugler and began preparing the secret annexe connected to the office warehouse for hiding. Anne was given her diary on her 13th birthday in 1942 and she immediately began writing in it about her family friends and school. A month later Margot like thousands of other young Jews received a call-up notice and was ordered to report to the SS. That evening the family moved into the secret annexe and with the help of Kleiman and Kugler and employees Miep Santrouschitz and Bep Voskuijl they remained in hiding for the next two years. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp near Hanover Germany in February or early March l945 just days after her sister Margot and only a few weeks before the camp was liberated by British troops. Jimmy Barnes
Working Class Boy Working Class Man

CONDITION: The book itself is in near fine condition and comes in good dust jacket. More specifically: Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket has light creasing. Edges of dust jacket have moderate bumping and minor chips and/or tears. Dust jacket is unclipped. Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: WORKING CLASS BOY: Long before Cold Chisel long before 'Barnesy' there was the true story of James Dixon Swan A household name an Australian rock icon the elder statesman of Ozrock - there isn't an accolade or cliche that doesn't apply to Jimmy Barnes. But long before Cold Chisel and 'Barnesy' long before the tall tales of success and excess there was the true story of James Dixon Swan - a working class boy whose family made the journey from Scotland to Australia in search of a better life. Working Class Boy is a powerful reflection on a traumatic and violent childhood which fuelled the excess and recklessness that would define but almost destroy the rock'n'roll legend. This is the story of how James Swan became Jimmy Barnes. It is a memoir burning with the frustration and frenetic energy of teenage sex drugs violence and ambition for more than what you have. Raw gritty compassionate surprising and darkly funny Jimmy Barnes's childhood memoir is at once the story of migrant dreams fulfilled and dashed. After arriving in Australia in the summer of 1962 things went from bad to worse for the Swan family - Dot Jim and their six kids. The scramble to manage in the tough northern suburbs of Adelaide in the 60s would take its toll on the Swans as dwindling money too much alcohol and fraying tempers gave way to violence and despair. This is the story of a family's collapse but also of a young boy's dream to escape the misery of the suburbs with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to join a rock'n'roll band and get out of town for good. WORKING CLASS MAN: It's a life too big and a story too extraordinary for just one book. Jimmy Barnes has lived many lives - from Glaswegian migrant kid to iconic front man from solo superstar to proud father of his own musical clan. In this hugely anticipated sequel to his critically acclaimed bestseller Working Class Boy Jimmy picks up the story of his life as he leaves Adelaide in the back of an old truck with a then unknown band called Cold Chisel. A spellbinding and searingly honest reflection on success fame and addiction; this self-penned memoir reveals how Jimmy Barnes used the fuel of childhood trauma to ignite and propel Australia's greatest rock'n'roll story. But beyond the combustible merry-go-round of fame drugs and rehab across the Cold Chisel solo and soul years - this is a story about how it's never too late to try and put things right. The Wide World : True Adventures for Men
Macmillan London 2004. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. Hardcover. 183 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Macmillan London 2004. First Edition. CONDITION: The book itself is in near fine condition and comes in fine dust jacket. More specifically: Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is unclipped. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Remainder mark on page edges. ABOUT THIS BOOK: From 1898 to 1965 The Wide World was the bestselling magazine for men who craved adventure. Each issue was filled with extraordinarily eccentric but true tales from around the world ranging from lion hunts and shark attacks to brigandage club bets and survival. There are thrilling accounts of well-documented yet forgotten exploits such as Sir Vivian "Bunny" Fuch's Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1957 and war hero Maurice Wilson's disastrous totally insane solo assault on Everest in 1933. There is an endless fascination with logging lion wrestling and the ranking of snakes in terms of their venom. Great details emerge such as the fact that the man who survived going over Niagara Falls in a rubber ball later died after slipping on a banana skin in New Zealand or that a Wolf will never eat a human foot. There is even real pathos as when we learn Maurice Wilson's last diary entry before dying on Everest reads: "Off again.Gorgeous day." Recounted in wonderful muscular prose in which a wet suit is a "free swimming aqua-lung outfit" and accompanied by maps editorials brief reports and adverts of sublime absurdity this anthology will include the best of the magazine presented in it's original design with colour reproductions of its striking jackets throughout. Michael O'Guiheen
A Pity Youth Does Not Last : Reminiscences of the Last of the Great Blasket Island's Poet
Oxford University Press London 2000. Reprint. Medium Trade Paperback. Very Good. Medium Trade Paperback. 137 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Oxford University Press London 2000. Reprint. CONDITION: This book is in very good condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing. Corners of covers are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: 'The tide spreads a mantle of silk Around the Great Blasket Island' So wrote Micheal O'Guiheen of his beloved island home. But by 1953 the authorities had evacuated the Great Blasket and its traditions were vanishing. Micheal O'Guiheen 'the Poet' of the book was the son of Peig Sayers who wrote 'An Old Woman's Reflections'. But while that was a celebration of the good times and her son's schoolmate Maurice O'Sullivan's 'Twenty Years A-Growing' was a book of laughing youth this takes the story to sombre middle age. It tells of sunny times clouded over only by unconscious intimations of mortality not only of youth but also of an irreplaceable culture: the consternation caused by a passing comet the drudgery of a turf-gathering expedition turning into a carefree rabbit hunt. This first and only English edition of O'Guiheen's 'cri de coeur' is supplemented by translations from the author's own poetry previously the original. The Blasket Islands are three miles off Ireland's Dingle Peninsular. Until their evacuation just after the Second World War the lives of the 150 or so Blasket Islanders had remained unchanged for centuries. A rich oral tradition of story-telling poetry and folktales kept alive the legends and history of the islands and has made tier literature famous throughout the world. The seven Blasket Island books published by OUP contain memoirs and reminiscences from within this literary tradition evoking a way of life which has now vanished. Quantity Available: 1.
