In this series of letters written from 1869 to 1875 young American piano student Amy Fay 1844-1928 describes her experience studying piano with Franz Liszt Carl Tausig Theodor Kullak and Ludwig Deppe. She also recounts performances by Anton Rubinstein Clara Schumann Tausig Liszt the violinist Joachim and Wagner as a conductor. After her return to Boston Fay performed in recitals and taught piano; later she was the manager of the New York Women's Philharmonic Society. She is living with a new man named Mark together since 1989 and is focused on recording demos teaching singing lessons moving to New York and hitting her goal weight 95100 lbs. She self-identifies as bulimic. She ends her first diary in December 1991 with a plan to beat her eating disorder further her career and become more spiritually enlightened. Diary Two: We meet her again in July 1995 now 28. Green boards illus end papers no page numbers about 200 pages the book is filled with remarkable colour illustrations by the artist. Being a plasterer's son from Schiedam making a living as an artist did not seem an option for Rien Poortvliet. His parents were strict followers of the Dutch Reformed Church and were opposed to the idea of their oldest son going to an art academy. Rien's aptitude for drawing showed early on. After primary education the young Rien worked at an ad agency where he could make some use of his talent. Poortvliet saw himself as a storyteller in drawings. His drawings told the tale and at most he added a short caption. He died in 1995. Poortvliet found recognition when Prince Bernhard opened the Rien Poortvliet Museum in 1992.
