‎Charles L Merrick‎

‎1925 Diary of Charles L. Merrick Whose Family Farming Legacy Dates Back to 1714‎

‎Wilbraham MA. Good with no dust jacket. 1925. Hardcover. On offer is a fine diary of successful farmer Charles L. Merrick of Wilbraham Massachusetts in the early years of the twentieth century. Merrick was born in 1902 and lived his life in Massachusetts. He passed away in 1995 at the age of 93. Merrick is part of a multi-generational family that has owned Merrick Farm in Wilbraham since the original land grant in 1714. The farm business continues to this day in the hands of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. At the time the diary was written Merrick was 23 years of age. The diary tells us he had graduated from college and was a member of a fraternity most likely Theta Delta Chi. At the time of writing he was working for a company possibly family-owned that produced among other products sashes. This diary gives an excellent look at the life of a young man just beginning his career. “Very hot. Pa Dick & I went to Amherst after some business in Amherst. Saw Whitcomb Daly & Olds about the young books. Got some stuff at the house left Dick and went to . to see the Starkweathers. Thunder showers. Home about 8: 30. Took a look at the strawberry festival. Multigraphed 400 copies of Frat. Letter to Alumni” June 1. “Quite hot. To office. Some late. Finished warehouse records. Shipped quite a lot of heavy sash. My back nearly broken” August 20. “Cloudy. Not too much stirring. Paid off mortgage of $5000 & then settled payments etc with Mr. Cassidy finishing all papers; thru with Fiskdale except $6.36 on Taxes” September 14. This small diary measures 6 inches by 3 inches and contains 122 pages. It is approximately 70 percent complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. Several pages have either had a portion cut out or been completely removed from the diary. The handwriting is legible. The notebook contains an extensive list of contacts and in many cases individuals’ location details. It offers an outstanding look into the early life of a man who would build on the legacy of his forefathers in central Massachusetts. It is also an excellent source of personal data for people living in this historic part of New England. ; Manuscripts; 6" x 3"; 122 pages . hardcover‎

‎Morocco Spain Monaco Italy Greece: Round-The-World Society. Very Good. 1926. Hardcover. On offer is a wonderfully preserved book of vintage stamped letters from 1925 and 1926. One of only a handful still in circulation "Letters from a Globetrotter" is a travelogue in the form of a series of subscription letters written by Elmer D. Raymond founder and president of the Round-the-World Society. This particular collection’s title page has "Volume Two" printed on it. Included in the book are close to 30 typewritten mimeographed letters over 65 real stamps with postmarks and cancels and three black and white photo plates. There is also a fold-out map of the world and a black sketch with blue background drawn by the author. Each letter in this collection is numbered with a roman numeral LIII being the first and addressed to Mrs. Geo W Acker of Port Gibson Mississippi. The return address of the letters is the Round-The-World Society in New York NY. The letters include stamps on the front some letters with one stamp and some with up to five or ten and about three pages of typed text inside. Every letter is titled eg "THE FOUR CITIES OF THE SEVEN HILLS" and includes a location at the top before the greeting of "Dear Friend: -" The contents of the letters are fascinating as Raymond uses his words to paint vivid pictures of the people culture history and current events of the places he visits. The travelogue begins en route to Fez Morocco with letter LIII. Raymond sets the scene writing "To-day we are awakened by the bells of a caravan drawing through Taza. First you think Santa Claus is paying a belated visit but soon you hear the shouts of the driver: 'Ahr zitt! Ahr zitt! ' Santa Claus wouldn’t talk Arabic to his reindeers." Raymond travels around Morocco before moving on to Monaco and into Italy. The collection ends with letter LXXIX in Greece. The leatherette two-hole binder measures 6" x 9". The screw posts used for binding are intact and the cover letters map plates and stamps within are in great condition. In this stunning artefact of travel writing Raymond captures the reader’s imagination from the opening lines of each letter. He provides a remarkable illustrated depiction of one possibly American man’s travels in North Africa and Europe in the 1920s. For a collector there is a wealth of stamps mailed to the United States from numerous fascinating locations. This is one of two volumes of "Letters from a Globetrotter" in our collection. Both are relatively unique with overlap of only twelve letters and three photograph plates. ; Letters; 8vo 6" x 9" . Round-The-World Society hardcover‎

‎TIM DEWING, MIDSHIPMAN‎

‎1983 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN ABOARD THE NOTED HMS FEARLESS CRUISING TO TORTOLA PROVING MIDSHIPMAN EVEN 100s OF YEARS SEPARATED BY TIME ARE STILL MUCH THE SAME SINCE THE AGE OF SAIL‎

‎Very Good. 1983. On offer is an original very interesting vintage manuscript relic of as titled "Two Months on HMS Fearless" handwritten by Royal Navy Midshipman Tim Dewing in 1983. Historians and collectors of life aboard a British Royal Navy ship will notice that while the book is contemporary there are many compatible moments for the young midshipman of the late 20th Century all the way back to the Age of Sail 'middys'. Dewing's journal is a casual affair in a flip top sketch book style book and in it he details the voyage of HMS Fearless a ship noted for being in the Falklands War the year before and more frivolously the ship appeared in a James Bond movie from Portsmouth to Tortola in the Caribbean between January - March 1983. Adding further breadth to the well written narrative with notes on shore leave naval practice and more diary like personal notes on how he feels during the passage are several hand-drawn sketches. There are 52 pages or so along with another 20 pages separate hand-written 'booklet' entitled 'Puerto Rico 1983' tucked in. Tim Dewing was a Junior Navigator at the time who later went on to run the Navigation Training Department at the Britannia Royal Naval Training College at Dartmouth; he ended his naval career at Whitehall. He is currently the managing director of a large soft drinks company based in Devon. Included is a Dewing's sight form book containing his navigation entries for 1984 a State of Sea printed booklet light recognition printed booklet and an artic survival printed booklet all of which came with the journal. ‎ABOARD THE SCHOONER NAPOLEON. Good. 1864. On offer is a super original Civil War era ship's log book of the Schooner Napoleon handwritten by an unknown author likely the First Mate given the statistical details provided and all manner of important details to the ship's record: weather conditions loading and unloading of all manner of cargo including cattle and even contact by gunboats seeking individuals who might be on board. Dated February 5 1864 the journal runs well into 1865. We learn that the ship Master's were Edward Soher who was then replaced by E. Nichols. The schooner went up and down the East Coast from New Haven Connecticut to Cape Hatteras North Carolina making several stops at Jersey City. Given the War was still on and they plied there trade from the Union North to the Confederate South it would not have been extraordinary for a commercial vessel to be boarded for deserters or runaways. The ½ leather oblong 4to has blue boards with paper label on front panel marbled edges and the leather is worn and frayed at the spine edges. Typical of a log kept by the First Mate or Captain the log details all the technical data; daily charts contain information on positions weather currents longitude and latitude wind direction and force and the various sails used. Fairly extensive use is also made of the blank space provided to make longhand notations regarding the passage of the McLellan. The writer also uses this space to note both the daily and whole "distance run". The odd note regarding particular currents off the River Plata or meetings with other vessels and the gossip punctuate the journal. Here are some snippets: On March 6 1833 The Ship McLellan departs Mazatlan bound for New York. ".with the assistance of the Ship of War Rattlesnake crew got our anchor without difficulty. The three Marias Isles at meridian were to the northward of us from 15 to 25 miles." Distance run the first day: 100 miles. On April 7 1833: ".spoke whaling ship Amethist of Nantucket - 70 days out with 300 blls. of sperm oil - reports 80 ships in the neighborhood upon the same business but with indifferent success." On June 20 1833: ".unusual quantities of whales seen for these 2 days." and on July 4th the McLellan crosses the equator having been out for 121 days and run 11262 miles. On Thursday August 7 1833 ".at 6 took a pilot at 10 came to anchor outside the bar - at 8 a.m. wind N.W. weigh anchor and made sail - Friday at 1 p.m. having worked almost up to the narrows was taken in tow by a steam boat and came to anchor at Querantine at 4; Subjected to 48 hours Querantine". This ends the 155 day 14038 mile voyage of the McLellan." The covers are intact and are comprised of marbled paperboard. Overall VG. HISOTRICAL NOTES: one online source provides: Samuel W. Comstock started in the trading business in 1833 on the Ship McLellan with a cargo shipped by G. G . & S. Howland later Howland & Aspinwall consigned to S.W. ‎Bernard Eugene Meland‎

‎Early 1900s Original Scrapbook Compiled by a Young Man Who Would Become One of America’s Leading Theologians‎

‎On offer is a wonderful early-20th-century scrapbook assembled by Bernard Eugene Meland one of America's leading theologians. This scrapbook dates from Meland's early life. It includes many notes mementos and keepsakes as well as letters that he obviously felt were important to him. Many items relate to music such as news articles about the Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso pictures of notable music performers and programs from various musical events such as the Calumet Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art. In one program Meland headlines as a baritone. Other pages in the scrapbook refer to Meland's service in the Students' Army Training Corps SATC. The SATC provided a reserve of more than 25000 students trained to become officers during World War I. This was necessary to officer the new army of two million that was to assist in the 1919 spring offensive during the war. Without the SATC it would have been impossible to provide an officer corps so rapidly in any other way. It also served to buffer many post-secondary institutions from the effects of the loss of so many students and the revenues they generated. Meland's scrapbook includes a complete description of the University of Illinois' Student Army Training Corps agreement as well as a list of some of his friends who served with him in the SATC. This scrapbook measures 11.25 inches by 11.25 inches. The cover is in good condition although it shows some discolouration. The pages are held together by a lace binding. While the lacing is intact and the binding secure most of the pages have pulled away from it. The pages are chipped around the edges and show discolouration as well. There are 42 scrapbook pages but there are also dozens of additional pages inserted between the leaves. These contain notes photographs letters and more. Bernard Eugene Meland was a classic liberal Christian theologian. Born in 1899 in Chicago he initially worked as a carpenter. After service in WWI he received a bachelor's degree at Park College Missouri and went on to study at the University of Illinois. Subsequently he studied at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. He taught at Central College in Missouri and Pomona College in California before joining the faculty of the University of Chicago. He authored a number of books and essays all of which provide insights into his theological vision. For an historian this scrapbook has value on several levels. It offers an excellent window into the early life of a man who would make significant contributions to American philosophy and thought. It also indirectly provides a close look at aspects of life on the homefront during World War I. On offer is the diary of Bertha Marion Reeby Whittle Harford 1875-1955 a bright energetic divorced Massachusetts bookkeeper who is dedicated to her work her adult daughter and her community. In January of 1906 Bertha married James H. Whittle 1857-1940 and together they had one child Doris Evelyn Whittle 1906-2009. James was almost 20 years Bertha’s senior and had five children from his previous marriage some of whom Bertha references in her diary. Bertha spent her career working at Worcester Stampede Metal Company where she began in 1912. She also either owned or managed a rental cottage. Bertha is a voracious writer. Though she writes in a 5-year diary her entries are long and there is only space for her to keep the diary for three years. She works full time is heavily involved in her church and community travels regularly keeps up on politics and is very involved in the life of her single adult daughter Doris a teacher. Some excerpts give the flavour of her writing: “Have been at the Wor. Stampede Metal Co 22 years today. Altha and Mr. Billings congratulated me. Evening went to Ms. Ernest Bennett to see moving pictures of Egypt and Palestine” Jan 22 1934. “Friday and my birthday 59 years and I had quite a number of cards and a very nice…scarf from Doris. Republican candidates have won. Cookson for mayor” Nov 5 1935. “Children’s day at church a good day. Went over and saw Ruth Gilchrist’s presents” Dec 25 1936. For a social historian this diary offers a detailed look into the independence daily tasks and lifestyle of a single and thriving older woman in the 1930s who has carved her own path with great success. It is fascinating to contrast Bertha’s diary with other woman-written diaries of the same era as the differences are vast. Measuring 5.5x4.0 inches this diary contains 365 pages and is 100% complete. The cloth cover and binding are in good condition as are the pages. Writing is legible.; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 365 pages . hardcover‎

‎Isadore Sheldon Tucker‎

‎1912 Manuscript Diary of University of Nebraska Sorority Girl from a Prominent Entrepreneurial Nehawka Family‎

‎Nehawka Nebraska Lincoln Nebraska Knoxville Illinois. Good with no dust jacket. 1912. Softcover. On offer is the excellent 1912 diary of Isadore Sheldon Tucker 1894-1959 of Nehawka Nebraska. Isadore was the only child of Emma Banning and businessman Frank Pollard Sheldon. She was the niece of Republican Nebraska Governor George L. Sheldon who governed from 1907-1909. Isadore was 18 when she kept this diary. See BIO NOTES on Isadore Sheldon Tucker at the end of the listing. This diary follows Isadore through the second half of her senior high school year at St. Mary’s School near Knoxville Illinois and the first half of her freshman year at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Her diary provides a remarkable look behind the curtain during the most tender and vulnerable late teen years of a socially and academically successful young woman. Some excerpts follow and give a flavour of Isadore’s diary. She lives on campus at St. Mary’s and travels home by train when time allows: “I started to school today. Marietta King and Alice Farley got on the train at Omaha also. Mildred Adams was on there. We had a circus all the way. Met a lot of other girls in Galesburg” Jan 3 1912. “A missionary here. Gave the Sermon this morning. I took Adel Forbes Grey De La Mater Helen Sombait and Polly Lloyd to Idle Den tonight. I was Baptized this afternoon. Alice Farley and Etith Russel were also Baptized…” Feb 11 1912. “The Prom. I went with Mr. Dan Wheeler. Liked him real well. Had a fine programme. The Hall was awfully pretty. Decorated with Smilax and Wisteria. Used lattice work on windows and around piano. Dan Wheeler is a Beta at Knox. Esther went to the reception but not to the prom. Ida Stevens was sick and they stayed together. I had a wonderful time” Feb 17 1912. “We had our party up in Marg and Mary’s room. I stayed with Dot most of the night last night. It stormed hard. This A. M. She was all broken out. They think she has the measles. Took her to the infirmary. I have been writing her notes all day” Apr 26 1912. Isadore spends the summer at home in Nehawka. On September 23 she starts classes at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Her entries give the reader remarkable insight into the freshman experience particularly when she starts rushing sororities. It’s interesting to note that her regular trips home on the weekend wane as her social and academic lives flourish on campus. “.I had botany today also Latin. I lost a very valuable Note Book and had to write my Rhetoric theme over. Have it written now and am going to copy it now. I weant to go home if I can tomorrow. Ruth and Mrs. Coe and myself went to the Lyric this evening. Program was real good” Oct 4 1912. “Today I went to an Alpha Phi breakfast Delta Gamma luncheon Alpha O Cotillion and a Theta dinner…Galaideth wanted me to go to the Ag. Dance but I went to bed. The Alpha Phis had a Japanese Wedding” Nov 23 1912. “They have decided that there shall be no more calling and today I got written invitations to Tri Delt Kappa and Theta. Could accept all” Dec 3 1912. This diary clearly depicts this young woman at the beginning of what would be a successful career in her community. It also paints an unexpected picture of a confident headstrong and bright young woman who does not conform to expected social norms of the time. BIO NOTES ON ISADORE SHELDON TUCKER: Isadore Sheldon Tucker 1894-1959 was the direct descendant of a number of prominent American Revolutionaries such as Nathan Conant 1743-1820 a minute man at the Lexington Alarm and served as lieutenant under Colonel Jonathan Reed. Isadore attended the University of Nebraska Bachelor of Arts class of 1916 and pledged to Kappa Kappa Gamma Nebraska Sigma Chapter. In 1920 Isadore married Marion Tucker. They did not have any children though they did have cousins who lived with them for a time named Wilda and Cecile Mitchell interestingly they are listed as Marion’s children in his obituary. Isadore was a pillar of the Nehawka community sitting on the board of the library acting as Vice President of the Nehawka Woman’s Club an executive member of the Nehawka school board Chairman Treasurer and much more. Isadore’s father Frank Pollard Sheldon was a pioneer merchant and farmer who built Sheldon General Store in 1888. Isadore’s husband Marion managed the store. Tragically Sheldon General Store burnt to the ground on July 15 1959. Isadore would die only eight days later on July 23 1959. Whether there was a connection between the fire and Isadore’s death is unknown. Measuring 6.0 inches by 3.5 inches this diary contains 365 pages plus memoranda. The diary is approximately 80% complete containing about 300 entries in the 365 day diary. The cover is an ox-blood leather. It shows wear at the corners but is otherwise in good condition.
