‎MAISIE SHEPHERD KINGSLEY, MRS HARRY NORMAN SHEPHERD‎

‎1924 - 1953 ORIGINAL GROUP OF 15 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A FASHION FORWARD SUFFRAGE ERA BRIGHTON GIRL WHO EVOLVES INTO A DUTIFUL 1950s WIFE‎

‎BRIGHTON HOVE ENGLAND BRITAIN. Good. 1935. On offer is a super group of 15 original manuscript diaries begun in 1924 by a young Brighton woman who writes as a student on the heels of British suffrage in the 1920s to her as dutiful housewife in the 1950s these diaries offer a superb opportunity to witness the evolution through the self made narrative of a young English woman. From the slingshot of World War I rationing to the exuberant fashionable empowering 'Roaring 20s' to her later life as a respectable conservative '50s housewife. Maisie lives for fashion as even a casual reader notes as she records her school and then work life. The earlier years shows that interest and her travels in fashionable circles evident in the numerous drawings and pencil sketches as she explores couture hairstyles and headdress. We count at least 70 pages with her illustration likely garnered whilst attending fashionable soirées. We learn she is apparently of a well off family Maisie she mentions the 1926 general strike in the United Kingdom which lasted nine days; at the time she was working at some type of a studio but during the strike she was selling flags. Aside from fashion she makes no effort to hide the fact Cupid's arrow has struck her heart with regard to a charming young man Harry Norman Shepherd who she would later marry. Fascinatingly we note Harry was involved in the fashion industry with a 1959 news reference easily found online naming him the master of ceremonies for a fashion show put on by Marks & Spencers designed to attract "an attentive and fashion-conscious audience." Other entries from the mundanities and details of travels Italy France Switzerland throughout England and Dublin we believe married life occasional expenditures books read etc. We also learn as an extension of her fashion proclivities she sews a great deal perhaps having gained the 'bug' and experience in her fashion oriented younger years. The books proper cover the years 1924 - 1927; 1930; 1944 - 1953. There are a small number of ephemeral pieces in the diaries. Various pocket book sizes. Overall G.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MAISIE SHEPHERD KINGSLEY MRS. ‎Eleanor L MacRae‎

‎1940s Pair of Diaries Handwritten by a Wealthy Toronto Area Woman‎

‎Greater Toronto Area Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1944. Hardcover. Offering two 1940s handwritten diaries by 61-year-old Eleanor L. Macrae which provide an outstanding look at life in urban Canada during and immediately following World War II. Macrae's entries are lengthy and detailed portraying daily life during and after the war as part of a well-off family for whom service to “King and Country” was considered a given. Inside the front cover Macrae has noted the names of her family members who were at war: her son Donald serving in the Royal Navy HMS Diadem and his two brothers serving in the Royal Canadian Navy Bill on HMCS Penetang and John Bubs on HMCS Sudbury. “Damp & Cold -- threatening rain or snow. Up to shop in the morning and busy taking down Christmas tree -- went to Gwyn Cornell’s for tea with Lallie Pullen. Delighted to hear from her of Hugh having been awarded the OBE for his services in the Navy. Sis Mont & I went to see ‘Young Mr. Pitt’ at the Gregory” January 5 1944. “Very happy letters from Bub & Gilly. Having a wonderful time in Victoria. Bub is to be in Vancouver working on Victory Loans and making speeches in war plants etc. Filling in his time til his ship is ready” April 18 1944. Despite having three family members in combat she writes the following: “Thanksgiving Day . Mont had planned for an all day sail but as the weather looked bad they called it off . Had our Thanksgiving dinner. . A very happy day & a lot to be thankful for” October 9 1944. The 1946-50 diary is actually a hardcover lined notebook in which she made dated entries. It begins on March 1 1946. The entries cover the time period of March 1946 through December 1950. Macrae writes in a chronological order but entries are not made every day. Often there are gaps of several days or weeks. However taken as a whole they provide an excellent overview of Macrae’s life in the immediate aftermath of WWII. “Up early getting ordering etc done. Pat & Sis looking at farms in afternoon. Had an early lunch then Mont & I off to Toronto to Gordon Wright’s wedding. Enjoyed it very much. Saw a lot of the younger relatives from Ancaster. Afterwards Mont & I had dinner at the King Edward & came home” March 2 1946. “Bill & Holly married seven years ago today in Port-of-Spain Trinidad. Went over & looked after the children while H went to have her hair done. Children stayed all night with us as Holly and Bill went to the Yacht Club ball at H. M. C. S. York” February 18 1949. “Went to Toronto on 12: 20 bus. Shopped & home with Mont. Fun prowling around with my Christmas cheque to spend! Got a new clothes dryer. The tumbler type. $1850! Awful price but I always wanted one” January 161950. At the back of the journal are four pages listing a variety of dividend cheques received. Ephemera includes transaction receipts for stock purchases birth and death announcements and photographs among other things. Eleanor L. Macrae was born in 1883 in the Hamilton Ontario area of Canada. Through family and marriage she was related to prominent members of Ontario’s early society. The Heritage a large stone mansion whose ruins now belong to the Hamilton Conservation Authority was constructed by a direct ancestor George Leith. The mansion eventually passed to Leith’s daughter Alma Leith who married the grandson of a Scottish Earl Stair Dick-Lauder. Alma Dick-Lauder wrote historical articles for the Hamilton Spectator which were later published in book form. There is a photograph of Alma Dick-Lauder in the ephemera accompanying these journals. Macrae’s husband was Albert Montye Macrae from Oakville Ontario a wealthy community west of Toronto. His family was successful in business and finance and Montye was no exception. Eleanor’s journal records a number of stock and bond transactions carried out through Macrae & Company a brokerage firm in Toronto. The 1944 diary measures 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches contains 365 pages and is 100 percent complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. The 1946-1950 diary measures 9.5 inches x 5.5 inches is 160 pages and 95 percent complete. The cover is in fair condition but the binding and pages are good. This group of journals and the accompanying ephemera offer a wonderful look at life for a well-off woman in the years around World War II in a prosperous community in Ontario.; Manuscripts; 8.5" x 5.5" ; 365 pages . hardcover‎

The archive includes three original 1935 typed logs describing the tragic 1935 transatlantic Yacht Race from Newport - Bergen Norway. Each day of the race is mentioned in 10 pages of typed manuscript. Minor changes have been made inserted in pencil. Plus two original carbon copies of the same. This log mentions several tragic deaths aboard other yachts in this race. A 1931 original typed log of a trip from Newport R.I. on July 4 to July 23 1931 11 pages onboard The Mistress" with George E. Roosevelt Master. Plus one original carbon copy with minor changes inserted in pencil. Another rather interesting typed log or manuscript is a 1947 New York to Panama trip about a Navy vessel. This voyage was from March 31 to April. There is a great 12 x 10 x 6 inch photo of Newsman and officers on board the USS Wisconsin for the Fourth Naval Reserve Training cruise and is captioned. The log of the journey is attached. This includes daily notes and events with navy officers and newspaper reporters as well as the President of the Shell Oil Co. This log was typed on 12 pages on the reverse of each page is letter head from Harris Upham & Co- a famous brokerage firm dealing in securities. Here are some snippets: June 12 1935 Our cook deserves a few remarks. He is a Dane and admits an age of 51 but looks older. His performance during the two days of heavy weather was marvelous. Hot meals well cooked and promptly served greeted us each time we came below cold and wet. All this time cooking in galley without a breath of ventilation as we of course were battened down completely during the gale. He feels hurt if one does not eat a lot and will get anything asked for such as tea instead of coffee etc. Our skipper says this storm would be exceeded only by winter gales or tropical hurricanes. Our cook says that the beating he received was not deserved even by one who murdered his father and mother: and he says he never did that. June 21 1935 Long 27.20 The sun came out this afternoon and its warmth was most grateful. It soon went behind the clouds and our fingers on the wheel again became numb as they have been for day. Below decks we are warm and the food continues wonderful. our eggs are still good: the bread still fresh; rum ration served at times when tired and cold is far superior to whisky and brandy. Contrary to our course in 1931 we took ice with us this trip and the last of it melted away today and we had our last fresh meat today. Of our 320 gallons of water we have consumed only 100 so if conditions continue favorable water will be turned on in the toilet in three days. We so far have used only salt water for washing and bathing. One cup a piece a day for shaving has been allowance of fresh water. BIO NOTES: George Emlen Roosevelt 1887-1963 was a banker and philanthropist was a first cousin once-removed of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and one of the most prominent railroad financiers of his day involved in 14 railroad reorganizations. He also held directorships in several important companies including the Morgan-controlled Guaranty Trust Company the Chemical Bank and the Bank for Savings in New York. His son Julian Roosevelt was an Olympic yachtsman. Overall G. Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Manuscript. unknown‎

‎1927 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG MAN'S FIRST VOYAGE PROUDLY AS THE DECK BOY BUT NOT ONE AFRAID TO TAKE A TURN AT THE WHEEL‎

‎ASEA ABOARD THE SS WEST HARCUVAR. Good. 1927. On offer is an utterly charming from a fascinating perspective original 1927 manuscript trip diary handwritten by E.J. Austin Deck Boy on the SS W. Harcuvar. Edward as we learn from a tucked in news clipping about the 38 year old man uses a 'Composition' notebook beginning Sunday April 17th to May 31st while undated the year matches up to 1927. He begins with the first entry as if a the book is a long letter to his mother and family. Typically his first few days aboard ship as a new crewman is fraught with the highs and lows: the sea air makes for a big appetite and then the rolling of the waves make for a 'green' sailor in both definitions of the situation. By the end of the first few weeks he is an old tar taking his turn at the wheel in between paint chipping sessions at the forecastle. The book also contains a letter perhaps unfinished tucked in dated Summer 1928. At the back of the 8vo book are some religious writings including "The Path of Freedom" Presence of God. ‎1935 - 1936 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ENGAGING STUDIOUS SKIRT CHASING SOUTH AFRICAN COLLEGE STUDENT WHO LIVES A LIFE OF FUN AND SUN OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL‎

‎SEAFORTH CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA. Good. 1935. On offer is a super original January 1935 - May 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by a young South African college student who writes of the almost idyllic life. School aside there are trips with friends and family outings and games and nary a worry. While the author is unidentified there are numerous clues which should help local researchers and historians revealing him at some point. A resident of the Greater Cape Town area there are frequent mentions of local places: Seaforth his most common reference and likely closest to home Cape Point Constantia Salt River Fire Station and his numerous friends and family are all named. However when he meets a new girl he some times use a shorthand mark to refer to his activity with her. The diary is an experiment and being the very pragmatic he lays out his reasons and method for approaching the experiment. He loosens up and details in a neat hand his life and times: his love affairs yearnings career travails and leisure activities including the beaches parties rugby games movies and books seen and read. The final entry states he has passed Part II of his studies and in August he and his father depart for England where the young man will complete his education and father begins his 6 months leave. The 8 x 10 inch stiff card cover book has 85 pages of narrative and save for some general ageing and a stain or two is overall G.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF SOUTH AFRICA SOUTHERN AFRICA CAPE TOWN FALSE BAY SEAFORTH CAPE POINT CONSTANTIA SALT RIVER FIRE STATION AFRIKANER AFRIKAANS AFRICANAHANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPHED AUTHORS DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES JOURNAL LOG PRIMARY SOURCE FIRST HAND ACCOUNT SOCIAL HISTORY PERSONAL STORIES LIVING HISTORY ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPELBIOGRAPHY BIOGRAPHICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY PERSONAL NARRATIVES . unknown‎

‎GUY NEWMAN‎

‎1901 - 1905 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN ALMOST OBSESSIVELY BY A BANKER AND PERFUME DEALER EXEMPLIFYING THE NEW AND FASHIONABLE EDWARDIAN ERA‎

‎HAVERSTOCK LONDON ENGLAND. Good. 1901. On offer is a fascinating enigmatic original December 1901 to May 1905 Edwardian Era manuscript diary handwritten by we believe Guy Newman of Haverstock in London England. Less than a year after he death Mr. Newman writes a diary that exemplifies the end of Queen Victoria's less sociable more austere reign into the breathy heady days of Edward's fashionable regency. He writes with a near obsessive qualities: the writing legible but very small fills each page as he creates a diary of almost extraordinary detail of the doings and happenings from his intimate personal circle to the social and political scene in London to almost the entirety of England: he refers to the two wicked women being hanged in Holloway; the death of Cecil Rhodes; a visit to the Zoo; relatives off to South Africa; train journeys; Royal Tournament; King and Queen's procession just to note the merest of jottings. A banker the young man who marries in June of 1902 references the stock market and corporate doings frequently and as historians will agree he was at the epicentre of the financial world and arguably the most enviable country in the world; in the rush to get ahead we learn he and his wife to be whom he calls 'Babs' or 'Bessie' have a business selling perfume and there are numerous entries relating to orders and contact names. That said we find Mr. Newman an odd man. The book proper has a stiff paper cover which has had a small rectangular window cut into it. Pasted on the back is a square of paper with the start and finish dates of the diary. The pastedown now torn covers and partially obscures what appears to be the inscription ownership information. The name Guy Newman is visible resting on the upper edge. However Guy makes the reader very confused until one understands he writes in the third person. For example he lists himself and Bessie in the wedding presents as 'Guy to Bessie' and 'Bessie to Guy'. He even writes at one point that he has to see someone to sell perfume and that 'Newman has promised him an order for Christmas'! While the cover of the 210 page 7 x 5 x ¾ inch thick book is chipped and scuffed and a little knocked the interior is very good and overall G. ; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF GUY NEWMAN ELIZABETH NEWMAN BESSIE NEWMAN HAVERSTOCK LONDON ENGLAND HOLLOWAY HANGINGS EDWARDIAN ERA THE CITY FINANCE ECONOMICS PRE WORLD WAR I PRE WW1 TURN OF THE CENTURY ENGLISH ECCENTRICS BRITAIN BRITTANICA OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE OCD HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPHED AUTHORS DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES JOURNAL LOG PRIMARY SOURCE FIRST HAND ACCOUNT SOCIAL HISTORY PERSONAL STORIES LIVING HISTORY ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPELBIOGRAPHY BIOGRAPHICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY PERSONAL NARRATIVES . unknown‎

The second trip on the SS Caledonia was from London to Calcutta via Marseilles Port Said and Colombo. Between the voyages she resides in London which in itself is a fascinating and interesting read. ‎MARY or MARGARET DISCON [?]‎

‎1922 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DESCRIBING A DAY SPENT TRAVELING AND VISITING A VILLAGE IN SINGAPORE NEAR SARIBUE DOLOK BY AN UNUSUALLY OBSERVANT AND INTREPID BRITISH WOMAN‎

‎KAMPONG INDONESIA SINGAPORE 1922. On offer is a super original 1922 manuscript diary of a woman who we believe is named Margaret or Mary Discon. While she has not identified herself she does seem to refer to herself at some point in the third person. The diary describes her time spent in Kampong Singapore near Saribue Dolok. Using 8½ x 14 inch sheets of paper folded but loose she describes her time over 17 pages with some photos as titled: "A Day at _____gale." While the first part of the place name is difficult to read we are sure that local researchers and historians will no doubt uncover the location especially given the detailed clues leading up to the spot. Here are some snippets: "It was with gay hearts that we sat in the lamplight making the best breakfast we could with nerves thrilling in anticipation of the days jaunt while the boy and his wife saw to the storing of baskets of provisions; lemons soda waters etc. etc. We stepped into the car as the sun was lighting the east and a cool breeze making coats very necessary. Our days outing had been looked forward to for weeks and the visit of a fellow passenger brought the journey to completion. The jungle sounds were ceasing and domestic animals of all specimens were beginning to stir. First we went through rubber then a long street of palm shaded road through a struggling and picturesque Kampong…." Their car gets stuck in the mud and they have to have the village people dig them out: "….we reached Saribue Dolok which seemed to consist solely of a large store and a missionary's house but they usually have been native Kampong's hidden in the hollows here and there for we saw numerous parties of Balaks silently following each other to the market in Indian file…." They are now on their way to a volcano. Also describes the natives clothing. Back to Kampong. "The Kampong of Harring all lies just above the shore guarded by banyan trees. The rest house is a pleasant little bungalow provided by the Dutch government for visiting officials and lent for a small fee to any traveler. Here we found contrary to repost that a well supplied table was provided….We crossed a small stream the stream was small but gully was broad by a bridge consisting of two thin tree trunks on one side of which was a low rattan rope which gave us help and hardly any confidence…." They finally board a boat and she mentions how the crowds of people started gathering to watch them and has a photo showing just this scene. They finally return to the rest house. The diary pages were folded actually misfolded and the edges of the pages are a bit brittle and chipped with some little loss but overall Fair. . Fair. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. ‎ABIJAH W TALBUT [sometimes TALBOT]‎

‎1862 - 1871 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY OF A NEAR EPIC JOURNEY TO FIND WORK FROM MAINE TO MINNESOTA BY STEAMSHIP STAGECOACH TRAIN AND HIS OWN TWO FEET‎

‎COLUMBIA FALLS MAINE ME ST. PAUL ST. ANTHONY FALLS. Fair. 1862. On offer is a super original 1862 - 1871 manuscript diary handwritten by Abijah W. Talbut sometimes Talbot of Columbia Falls Maine who was a minor inventor and likely cranberry farmer as we note from one online reference: "… it was the rake developed by Abijah Talbot of Columbia Falls Maine that became the standard for the industry. This rake was similar to those used for harvesting cranberries but had metal teeth and a flat bottom like a dustpan. With only minor modifications it is still in use by many growers." The diary has 110 pages of which most are financial and expense entries with some miscellaneous notes however historians researchers and collectors of early East to West intra America travel will find a significant 34 page narrative section of a near epic 1867 trip from Columbia Falls Maine all the way to St. Paul Minnesota and somewhat beyond involving stage coaches steamships and trains. He makes note that this is his first trip on a train. His also details his time on a Mississippi River steamboat the Addie Johnson which had been built just three years prior. He takes a packet up the Mississippi all the way to St. Paul and then walked to St. Anthony's Falls. He then takes a stage to Princeton Minnesota where the joins a crew who is working on building a dam outside of town. They are camping in tents and this camp is called the Barrows Camp. ‎EDWIN FLYE STETSON‎

‎1876 Diary of a Future Doctor Detailing His Education At Bowdoin College in Brunswick and Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts‎

‎Bowdoin College Brunswick Maine Me Harvard Medical School. Good with no dust jacket. 1876. On offer is a super original 1876 manuscript diary handwritten by student Edwin Flye Stetson 1853-1924 while he was completing his sophomore year at Bowdoin College and then transferring to Harvard Medical School to complete his education. Stetson was born in Damariscotta Maine to Abner Stetson a shipbuilder and Betsey Riggs Stetson. He was educated at preparatory schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy before entering Bowdoin College. In 1883 Edwin married Mary Chapman 1856-1944. Stetson entered Bowdoin in 1874 and was meant to graduate from in the class of 1878 but left Bowdoin at the end of his sophomore year. He entered Harvard in fall of 1876 and graduated with the Harvard class of 1879. Dr. Stetson practiced medicine in Indiana from 1879-1885 and then moved back to Maine practicing in his hometown of Damariscotta until he retired due to poor health. Dr. Stetson’s son Dr. Rufus Stetson graduated from Bowdoin in 1908 and went on to specialize in blood transfusions in New York City. This diary covers the second half of Stetson’s sophomore year at Bowdoin January-April 1876 his summer working at a physician’s office and then his move to Massachusetts on September 24 1876 and his first semester as a student at Harvard Sept-Dec 1876. Interestingly at the end of his sophomore year at Bowdoin Stetson is uncertain whether he will return even once he returns home for the summer: “.Is this my last full day at Bowdoin. I hope not surely…” April 3 1876. “.I suppose I have made my last recitation at Bowd. Started for home at 3…” April 4 1876. “I wish I could decide about going back to Bowd…” April 7 1876. As we know he will ultimately decide to say goodby to Bowdoin and attend Harvard a few months later. It is neat to know with hindsight that the next generation of Stetson doctors would graduate from Bowdoin only 32 years later. At Harvard he describes many experiences in the medical school such as attending autopsies. Throughout the diary Stetson proves himself to be a social active man of many interests involved in a fraternity and with many friends and a packed work schedule. He writes daily and provides enough detail to get a clear picture of his life as a medical trainee across two states. The 7.5 x 3.25 inch leather 100 page diary written in pencil filled for the entire year with the day to day activities studies socializing making for a fascinating look at the training of this young man. Diary is in overall G condition save for normal signs of aging with all pages spine and covers intact. ; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF BOWDOIN COLLEGE EDWIN F. ‎GEORGE W OLIPHANT‎

‎1918 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WWI DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN INTREPID SAILOR DETAILING A FRAUGHT FILLED CROSSING OF THE ATLANTIC‎

‎ASEA ABOARD THE USS MOCCASIN. Good. 1918. On offer is a super original ship board manuscript diary handwritten by as inscribed 'George W. Oliphant S. S. Moccasin for formerly the German passenger liner "Prinz Joachim." Father: Charles H. Oliphant 169 Danforth St. Portland Maine." George does a great job as a diarist if a little sporadic at times bringing the action aboard ship to startling reality in his descriptive entries. The page a day style diary has 100 or so entries most of those dated February 7th through April 26th with few other entries before and after starts upon enlistment but before he can join he is trying to get some kind of license and having to go through the courts to do so. Likely regarding his rating in the Navy. The diary goes a long way to show the danger and at times dire hours for the ships and men at sea who served in support of the fighting elements and the people suffering the War in Europe. To that end this ship was a refrigerated cargo ship delivering frozen food to Bordeaux France and the very first trip out there is trouble for the crew and ship which while makes for exciting reading the reality for these brave sailors near fatal. Here are some snippets: 1918 "January 18th Called on Inspectors who agreed to give me my license. My argument evidently worked." "January 30th Went to New York and enrolled as officer in Naval Reserve as Ensign. Ordered uniform and returned on night train." "February 7th Called on Mr. _____and with whom had lunch. Advised him that I could not consider Montpelier job without notifying firm. Decided to drop entire matter until my return from war……Took three o'clock for NY. Arriving late. Staid at Saint George Brooklyn….Reported for duty at 4:30 P.M. at N. A. K. to Captain Beckwith. Moved to Hunt's for night and went to theatre with them where we saw Wm Gillette." "February 16th Called on Bowman and advised him that for T.'s sake an my families I would drop the matter about the license tho I felt that I should in justice to myself clear my name of any imputation of impropriety in case such an opinion had been given credence by the Bureau owing to Wilson's jealousy and circulation of false stories about my school. Went out with York of Coast Trans. Line with whom I hope to go across…." "February 17th Called on Capt. Thompson and among other things insisted either that he tell Cap. Beckwith of the status of my license or that I do so. He said I might be disenrolled. I told him that I would prefer to be disenrolled to holding a commission under my misunderstanding as to my qualifications. He finally agreed to tell B. himself tomorrow. I advised him that I intended to carry my appeal to Kedfried which he seemed glad to hear." "February 20th 9:00 A.M. Reported on board S. S. Moccasin Captain Powers commanding and then took 24 hours liberty. Went to Anderson and ordered coat. That night with Em. To Kenney's Vaudeville and home to Hunt's at 2 A.M." "February 25th & 26th Mr. Sullivan Executive officer Lieut reported and assigned to me duties of assistant to Executive….Stood 24 hour watch 12 P.M. S. S. Moccasin went into commission. John A. Meagler Ensign reported for duty from USS Jupiter Trenton N. J." "March 4th On duty all day rigging booms etc. etc. 4:10 P.M. Called Police Headquarters reg. theft of pitcher and having found finger prints on saloon rail. Detective appeared an hour later but could do nothing. 8 P.M. Lieut. Goodphile came aboard finger print expert from Police Headquarters and "fixed" prints which were to be photographed tomorrow. Stood watch of Meagler from 6-12 midnight sick. Rain snow warm." "March 11th 9:20 A.M. got under way 4 tugs assisting for trial trip to adjust compasses etc. Stood out 5 miles E. of Ambrose Channel L. S. I was on duty on bridge from 9:20 to 4:30 when we docked South side pier 6 Bush G Terminal. Hit telegraph on head first time after watching old man. Evening Murdock and I took in sights. Flying sign "S" and recognition signal." "March 23rd 1:30 P.M. We left Bush Docks about 9:30 and made way for Ambrose Ch. L. V. the pt. of departure for the convoy to consist of 39 vessels. Formation made at 4 o'clock beautiful day cool but clear. 39 vessels in 6 columns stretching for miles with cruiser De Monies in lead of No. 3. Col. and we 2nd in No. 2 Col. Frenchman leading F'chman dropped out leaving us in lead. Captain gave me 4 to 8 watch Murdock 1 -4 Hennesey and Ryan 8-12." "March 26th On duty at 4 A.M. All alone on the bridge of a 7000 ton ship and the Atlantic for so far as we could tell not a ship was near us. Weather cleared and at 5 I discerned two lights one forward one aft. Whether tramps or neutrals or part of convoy I could not tell. Called old man. Held course and at 5:30 the clouds lifted and scattered all over horizon 20 miles away. I picked up 12 ships. A welcome sight. I took my first sight for Longitude and came within 4 miles of old ____." In the morning 20 ships were with them but they also discovered a leak and had to work hard to repair it. Said it was 15 feet below water line and this is when all the excitement begins. "March 30th Water gaining. A seam is also spreading and you hear the water rushing in and falling in that below. An awful sound to one who realizes its seriousness. A storm might prove fatal to the safety of the ship. Captain suggested the Azores as a possibility." EDITOR'S NOTES: The Captain asked him to keep quiet about the seriousness of the leak but it was very distressing and the storm was getting worse. And he's still standing watch alone. They find out in the morning that they are now 3 miles off course and still in danger he writes: "Wind howling shrieking seas up to bridge 33 feet not a ship in sight. I went to supper when half way there we took a terrific roll 50 degrees and I was thrown clear of my chair for 15 feet hitting the dining table on my back in middle of room. As I passed made a grab for Exec's chair which came up by the roots. I landed on my shoulder beyond the table with another injury than a smashed thumb which the doc. fixed up. Just as I was returning to the bridge a boy came running up from engine room for doctor…." A 300 pound structure tore loose and flew across the engine room floor hurting several men and one was yelling that all the life boats were breaking loose. One man came near to going overboard. He says "We worked four hours griping in boats forty cowards shuddering and praying and 15 men doing the work." He goes on to say that the seas were enormous and towered above the bridge 15 feet. Says "It was the most awful experience of my life. I have seen storms and seas but none that compared with this." Finally on April 5th the wind dies down and they meet up with their convoy but not before they end up in the "Submarine Zone" with two messages received "War Warnings." "April 6th Nothing of note today tho the constant vigil and increasing strain is telling on everyone. The least bit of good news by wireless and there is good news only by comparison…." "April 7th The Des Moines still missing and in the heart of danger zone 300 miles from land. No lights for two nights no wireless no news." The next day he gets called to the bridge to send an SOS because the ship Cadillac was torpedoed and needs help. Thirty three ships now remained in the convoy. "April 14th The Cadillac ___to be one of our own convoy. Tanker whose position was first in sixth column. She was in sight of Northern ships in convoy when torpedoed and her guns were seen and heard working. 6 P.M. eight more destroyers joined us and by dark there were a total of ten circling around us shooting at their target suddenly stopping ready to blast off here or there whenever she might detect anything suspicious. They were like bloodhounds use to the wind poised ready to spring sniffing and listening for prey. Great stuff." The 4 x 6 inch diary is overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: "USS Moccasin ID-1322 was a United States Navy refrigerated cargo ship in commission from 1918-1919. She was the third ship to carry her name. Moccasin was built as the German commercial passenger-cargo ship SS Prinz Joachim in 1903 at Flensburg Germany by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft for the Hamburg America Line. When the United States entered World War I on the side of the Allied in April 1917 the United States Government seized her and placed her under the control of the United States Shipping Board for use during World War I. Renamed SS Moccasin she entered service as an American civilian cargo ship. Late in 1917 the United States Army chartered her. The U.S. Navy acquired Moccasin at New York City on 19 February 1918 for World War I use as a refrigerated cargo ship. She was assigned the naval registry Identification Number Id. No. 1322 and commissioned as USS Moccasin on 26 February 1918. SERVICE HISTORY: Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service Moccasin departed New York City on 14 March 1918 with a convoy for Europe arriving at Bordeaux France on 13 April to unload her cargo of frozen food. Moccasin continued to operate as a refrigerator ship making crossAtlantic runs to Europe from New York until she decommissioned on 2 June 1919. She was transferred to the United States Shipping Board the same day. She returned to commercial service as SS Moccasin later in her career being renamed SS Porto Rico."; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF GEORGE W. ‎MIDSHIPMAN ALEXANDER SHARP‎

‎1877 ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT LETTERS HANDWRITTEN BY AN 'OLD SALT' MIDSHIPMAN WHO WILL SERVE HIS COUNTRY AT SEA WITH DISTINCTION AND ONE DAY EARN HIGH PRAISE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES‎

‎USS MARION NICE FRANCE PORT SAID EGYPT 1877. On offer is a wonderful pair 2 of original manuscript letters handwritten by Midshipman Alexander Sharp Jr. he of a storied career having served as an aide to Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt and also commanded the U.S.S. VIXEN during the Spanish American War. He took part in the Battle of Santiago the largest battle of the Spanish-American War. Sharp born in Missouri in 1855 was the nephew of Civil War general and president Ulysses S. Grant. He entered the Naval Academy at Annapolis in June 1870 during the low point when the Navy was nearly out of existence. Ships were antiquated; promotion slow and the majority of the ship's crews were made up of people who were not U.S. citizens. On May 11 1873 Sharp was promoted to midshipman to ensign on July 18 1877 and then to master on April 8 1882. On March 3 1883 he was promoted to lieutenant junior grade having been in the navy for over 13 years. This was the rank he would still hold at the time of the Spanish American War. On October 29 1884 Sharp married Miss Josephine "Josie" Hand in Yankton South Dakota. Sharp was assigned to the office of the assistant secretary of the navy Theodore Roosevelt who described him in his autobiography as being a "first-class fellow." Roosevelt had Sharp appointed to the command of the U.S.S. VIXEN. Later when Roosevelt's Rough Riders approached the shore at the Daiquiri landing point aboard the Army transport YUCATAN the VIXEN was present. Sharp provided the YUCATAN with a pilot that got the ship close into shore unlike many of the other transports who had no pilots. Very shortly after the war's fighting ended and armistice was agreed to between the U.S. and Spain Sharp was promoted to lieutenant in August of 1898. Following the war Sharp promoted to lieutenant commander served aboard the venerable U.S.S. HARTFORD of Civil War fame. Later he was called to testify at the investigation into the actions of Winfield Scott Schley at Santiago. Sharp died on February 9 1910. The 22 year old Ensign Sharp already an 'old salt' writes very chatty chock full of sea faring narrative relating to his ship and others and the many common individuals in the service they know to his friend "Old Goat" a much later hand has written in pencil that the letter is to Hunter C. White the first letter written aboard the USS Marion a blockade ship during the Civil War is 12 pages 5" x 8" dated January 16 1877 USS Marion At Sea from Nice France. Sharp does a superb job detailing his life in the Navy: "…After graduation had a splendid time - was ordered on the 1 December 1875 to the Marion at Portsmouth NH…Our Mission composed of Carter Sharp Doyle Worcester Howe King Eldridge deRuiz. We met all the girls in Portsmouth. Had a splendid time - Left Portsmouth on 20 January 1876…We got off without any danger to the ship. I came damned near to getting killed. Topmast went down…From Norfolk we went to Port Royal SC. Were there about two weeks. There were about twelve men of war there and there were nineteen of our class on the different ships. From there we went to Key West Fla. Were there a few days and sailed for Porrazos de Santiago…There we anchored about five miles from the shore and rolled so that the 'dead-lights' had to be kept closed. Damned hot with heavy dew. Stayed there a month. Some of our fellows went ashore and up to Brownsville where some of our troops are… From there the ship sailed to…Mexico. We were there about a week and got our orders for Europe…Started for Lisbon Portugal. Every man…had a good supply of whiskey and cigars…Took the deck in the day time…I had her in a squall and got her through…The only squall of any size we have had since we have been on her. Well we went to Lisbon - had quite a nice time stayed two weeks and sailed for Leghorn Italy. Went through the straits of Gibraltar got to Leghorn found the Franklin Flagship…Went to…Turkey…from there Constantinople…Were there about ten days. Received orders to return to Villefranche France…Relieved the Franklin. She went home and we are on the Flagship…Went to Spezia Italy to have some repairs to engines. Saw the 100 ton gun. Dam big thing…Went to Genoa Italy. Were there two months. Met lots of splendid girls. I got spoony on a married lady. She ditto on me. Had a bally time. We correspond now. We had dances on board and the people had dances ashore…Was sorry to leave… Everybody in Nice in the Winter is rich and money is nothing…When we sailed the Nice papers came out with a long article expressing great regret at our leaving…Some of us Mr. Were invited to a big 'German' the last night we were in Nice. All of us went that could leave the ship. Had a bally time and Champagne was like water but I am afraid it will be our last dance for some time. We are now at sea on our way to Messina Sicily. We are to be there three days then go to Beirut in Palestine… "We all expect to go home in about September or October for examination for Ensigns. No one has looked at a book yet. "We keep a journal and put as much or as little as we please in it work something in navigation at sea if we want to. Are in five watches on the forecastle and take one watch on the deck in place of forecastle during the day at sea…We are quite comfortable have an Italian cook and steward…We all drink brandy. Hard to get any good whiskey…All their fellows wish me to give their best love to old Goat and say Bah! Bah! Sly Billy 'Section de bois' is well represented over here but you should hear us talk so much. Now old fellow write soon and address U.S.S. Marine Corps…I have so many things to tell you about…Lovingly your 'Other half'" The second letter is 2 pages 5" x 8" dated Port Said Egypt March 4 1877 Sharp writes to "Goat" "…We are as you can see by the heading at Port Said Egypt…We are anchored in the Suez Canal which is about four or five hundred feet wide at this place and about eight-six miles long. There are always a large number of Steamers in this port. Now there are ten. I go to Tunis Algiers. We expect our orders every day. Do you remember where we were this time four years ago I do! Well old man I am not engaged yet and what is more don't intend to be for some time yet. "I can live splendidly on my pay and save something. We receive one pay in gold…and things are quite cheap out here. We have an Italian Cook and Steward and two boys colored that we brought from the U.S. Our mess bill is 120 francs or about $24 a month in gold. "By the way an old school mate of mine is from Norwalk. His name is Walter B. Hogt. He went to school in Stamford with me…Well Old Goat I must congratulate you on your charming marriage…Alex Sharp." Small fold tears reinforced with archival tape. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript. unknown‎

‎DORIS TIBBELS‎

‎1944 - 1946 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF 150 MANUSCRIPT LETTERS HANDWRITTEN BY AN ADORING BALTIMORE HOMEMAKER WORSHIPING HER HUSBAND FROM AFAR KEEPING UP HEARTH HOME AND THEIR HAPPY BABY UNTIL HE RETURNS‎

‎BALTIMORE MARYLAND TO NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA. Good. 1944. On offer is a large archive of 150 original 1944 - 1946 manuscript letters handwritten by adoring wife and new mother Doris Tibbels of Baltimore Maryland whose homey loving letters make for an intimate look into the home front life of this charmingly head over heels in love with her adored 26 year old serviceman husband. Even when he is in Maryland at the Edgewood Arsenal and coming home many times she is still somewhat desperate in her detachment. Later while she writes of family and friends and her doings in Baltimore as the War winds down her husband is still active in New Orleans at the Special Chemical Detachment readers will feel her longing in a palpable way as if each letter is an attempt to draw him to her. She continually tells him she needs him to function in what some men might feel is a cloying manner. That said it is remarkable that she maintains the level of adoration over the years correspondence. Nearly every letter starts with whether it is a happy day or a sad day for receipt of his letters. We learn from the addresses that Charles is a T/5 or Technician Fifth Grade. Included ephemera includes clippings holiday and birthday cards military passes laundry receipts some small photographs adding further breadth to the group. ‎Dang Van Xuan [MAO] et al‎

‎1950s to 1960s ORIGINAL MEMORY BOOK AND LETTER COPY BOOK OF A VIET CONG SOLDIER LEAVING HIS FRIENDS FOR THE WAR IN THE SOUTH‎

‎VIETNAM. Poor. 1955. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript relic of the early Vietnam War dating back from the mid to later 1950s to the early 1960s. Handwritten by a Vietcong soldier called Mao full name Ðang Van Xuân the book is comprised of poems letter copies and diary like entries and pages that remind one of memorial albums with entries by friends and admirers with whom he studied political courses by the Communist Party in Hanoi for 3 years. The writings include; sentimental patriotic love poems about the role of love in war and love in general; also the lyrics of popular songs which our research finds are still known in Vietnam today. Our research suggests he lives in the North and the book commemorates that he is going far away. We know he is heading South on a 'mission' and likely combat as names mentioned include southern provinces: 'Nghe An' and 'Ha Tinh'. Interestingly the book had a dual purpose. When reversed the last 10 pages or so were used for mounting stamps; tax stamps payroll stamps we can only surmise but the stamps have since been removed but not by us. The book is in poor shape the text block loose but all accounted for. Some old water damage but all the narrative and entries are legible.; Vietnamese; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF FRENCH INDOCHINA VIETNAM WAR VC VAN SAM BAO TIEN PHONG TANG VIET MINH COMMUNIST PARTY VIET NAM ÐEC LEP ÐENG MINH HEI LEAGUE FOR THE INDEPENDENCE OF VIETNAM COMMUNIST NGHE AN HA TINH BATTLE OF ÐIEN BIÊN PHE HE CHÍ MINH NGÔ ÐÌNH DIEM EMPEROR BEO ÐEI DINH VAN SAM VIET CONG CHONG COMMANDOS KHANG KE TOAN TRINH SAT BORDER RECON DINH VAN SAM HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPHED AUTHORS MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎STUART COLUMBUS DESKINS‎

‎1921 - 1935 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF 15 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING THE EDUCATION OF A WORLD WAR I VETERAN WHO WILL ONE DAY HEAD THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT AT ELON COLLEGE IN NORTH CAROLINA‎

‎VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY ELON COLLEGE NORTH CAROLINA. Good. 1921. On offer is an interesting archive of 15 consecutive years 1921 - 1935 of manuscript diaries handwritten by S.C. Deskins Stuart Columbus. Mr. Deskins attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tennessee and then later Elon College in North Carolina where it appears he earned a doctorate and eventually became the head of the History Department in 1947. We list separately his early school notebooks studying Church history Education Philosophy etc.#0001951 Having served in World War I Stuart we note enigmatically that the earlier diaries are written in German then evolve to English and German and he never really stops using some simple German when for example he writes 'Zu Haus' but English entries otherwise. The diaries are not expressions of personal thoughts but follow his education experience at Vanderbilt and Elon very closely. Some of the books 5¾ x 2½ inch are in rougher shape with spines chewed but for the most part they are G.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF S.C. " Ruth McGinnis stated playing pool at the aged 7 in her father's barbershop pool hall on South Main Street in Honesdale Pennsylvania. She was a prodigious player at a young age making a run of 47 at the age of about 10. She was the captain of the varsity basketball team that won the Pennsylvania state championship in 1928. McGinnis scored 36 points in one game and 341 across the 15 games in the series. In 1943 she completed training as a physical education teacher at Teachers' College. Whilst at Stroudsburg she participated in a number of sports including soccer golf softball and field hockey. She also served as a lifeguard and is said to have saved a man from drowning. McGinnis found it difficult to secure a teaching post after leaving Stroudsburg and joined a programme called "Better Billiards" organised by the National Billiards Council of America which sponsored McGinnis to visit pool halls and promote pool. The visits usually involved her giving a short talk demonstrating some trick shots and playing against representatives of the venue. She travelled around 28000 miles a year and over 200000 miles in less than ten years." from Wikipedia . National Billiard Association of America paperback‎
