‎Edwin Flye Stetson and Mary Chapman Stetson‎

‎1873-1882 Archive of Diaries of a Student At Bowdoin College and Then Harvard Medical School Plus Diaries of His Future Wife‎

‎BOSTON MA DAMARISCOTTA NEWCASTLE BRUNSWICK MAINE. Good with no dust jacket. 1873. On offer are six 6 original handwritten diaries belonging to Edwin Flye Stetson and Mary Chapman Stetson both of Maine. Edwin Flye Stetson 1853-1924 was born in Damariscotta Maine to Abner Stetson a shipbuilder and Betsey Riggs Stetson. He was educated at preparatory schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy before entering Bowdoin College in 1874. He attended Bowdoin for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Harvard Medical School in the fall of 1876. In 1883 Edwin married Mary Chapman 1856-1944 of Newcastle Maine. They would have four children together: Helen 1884 Rufus Edwin 1886 Grace Lunt 1891 and Mary Elvira 1894. Edwin Flye Stetson's diaries cover 1873 1874 1875 and 1877. In 1873 Stetson is a student at we presume Lincoln Academy in Newcastle Maine. In 1874 he completes his secondary education and even comments forlornly on the end of his time as a school boy on July 1 1874: “Sitting out…the last time I will ever sit here as a schooler most likely…good bye old house school days where are all over here”. He begins his education at Bowdoin in the fall of 1874 after a false start getting left behind on his first attempt to go to Brunswick ME on September 23 he finally arrives at his dorm on the 25th. He writes of his time at Bowdoin from Sept-Dec 1874 and throughout his 1875 diary. By 1877 Stetson is living in Boston and attending Harvard Medical School. Mary Chapman's later Stetson diaries cover 1880 and 1882. She would marry Edwin in 1883. In 1873 Edwin is a 20-year old student we believe at Lincoln Academy. Some excerpts follow: “February 12th Cut wood a little while today. Go over to the hall in the afternoon and helped fix it up a little for the great ball Friday night. Everite has gone to Augusta and I have got to stop in the store tonight. ” In June he takes a trip to St. John’s on a ship and spends a few months camping and relaxing for the summer”. “June 23rd and 24th Start for St. Johns this morning. I am tired of riding. Wish I was there….Arrive in St. Johns 7 o’clock this morning. Go up to the Victoria Hotel to breakfast. Stay in the ship all day with Wilder. Like it. Think I shall run across to L. With them. Go up where the folks are tonight. Turn in at 10 o’clock happy”. “July 2nd Father called me at 4 o’clock this morning. Devil of a hurry as usual. Boat starts from B. At 6 o’clock. Arrive in Rockland at 12 m. Get home 3 o’clock.Have a gay time. I tell ye fine bedfellow”. He returns to school in September 1873: “Finish sawing pine wood this forenoon. Get some in. Sent ma the note tonight. Dance in the hall. Don’t go. Sobered down quite an old man now. Things that I once loved I now hate and things that I once hated I now love. Whiskey &c. ”. 1873 is written almost entirely in pencil and there has been some serious smudging on some day’s entries. This is not too common but for the couple days smudged over they cannot be comprehended fully. 1874 is much the same as the previous diary recordings of his day-to-day tasks and life experiences often dealing with girls drinking school and friends. He begins school at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine in the fall of 1874: “February 12th Our annual ball tonight. The best time I ever had. Home at 5 o’clock. We go over and sit and smoke with Jones until ½ after 6. Home do my work and turn in”. “September 26. Got my books today and fooled around a little. Went down to Dunnings to tea tonight but don’t like much…”. “October 15. School adjourned this PM on account of the fair. Eve and I went over. Joined the Society tonight. Heard from Mother today…became a member of the Zeta Psi Society tonight 2am…”. “November 18. A new member in the freshman class. Purrington entered today or rather came today got his ticket last year. Class meeting again for election of officials as split before”. In 1875 Stetson is completing his freshman year and beginning his sophomore year at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine: “January 9th Started for school today in a snow storm. Got here all night but am everlastingly lonesome homesick for anything you please”. “January 12th I have studied like the very-D. Today and taken a dead for it. If it wasn’t for the corks of the thing I’d pack my books send them home and strike for parts unknown to man or east. I’m fairly discouraged. If I had a ‘drop of the old creature’ I believe I’d indulge a little”. In college Edwin is sometimes struggling homesick lonely and ‘dead broke’. He writes once that one “Can’t say that I have had a very good time outside of home” In the summer his parents and his brother Abner visit him. This doesn’t help too much though. “July 27th & 28th Ab came down this afternoon but wouldn’t stay. He has been at home now over a week and I am unable to read him. I fear he has changed mightily or else he is acting it…. Picnic today. Don’t care much about it but must go. Wish I hadn’t gone. Never had a much poorer time. Wish I had gone when I had a good mind to Oh! Dear! Things are not just as I would have them but when will they ever be different ” Edwin’s last diary is in 1877 written in Boston Massachusetts where he is attending Harvard Medical School. He is doing better at Harvard obviously studying very hard but seeming to enjoy the struggle. “January 21 1877. In the last 84 hours I have slept 6 tried to sleep today but could not”. “March 1 Worked in the lab until 11. After lecture in anatomy went down to the store and got my collars came home and studied on anatomy until supper time. Down to dissecting room this eve then Rob & I went down to Miller’s. ” He attends classes on Chemistry Physiology Anatomy and others. He is incredibly studious during this time: “Studied till 11 - a very pleasant day - down to Chemistry - studied till after 2.” The entries thin out a bit by the end of the year probably due to end of year exams. There is one entry from another time that Edwin has added in about his father’s death: “November 4th 1878. Monday. Father died at 1.45 P. M. Today. I arrived on the 4 P. M. Train. ” Mary’s diaries begin in 1880. She spends much of the year in school and in the summer takes a trip out to Iselboro Maine: “February 17th Pleasant. School all day. Got real tired and am fairly sick this eve. I stretched out on the sofa and was thankful that Uncle Billie did not come. Mamma is not very well either. But we are very happy at being all together in our bright little home. Saw Addie”. “April 28th Pleasant and warm. We began school at 8 this morning and let out at ten as to attend Mr. French’s funeral. The remains were placed in the Hall. He looked very natural. The Mason’s buried him. They looked very nice and there were a great many. Papa was among them. Luda came home to dinner with me. Went to school this P. M. Mr. Thurlow tried experiments. Went over town got my dress. Had quite a time”. Mary was extremely ill during the middle of the year. She explains her illness which lead to a gap in her diary entries. By the time she begins writing again she is back to her old self: “May 2nd 1880. Something did happen. I was taken sick that very eve that the last page was written and have had a long drag of six weeks been very sick with fever and been badly poisoned and salirated by Dr. Rob. No one knows what I have suffered but myself. I will pass over the next six weeks in silence since I only lay in bed. Everybody was as good as possible. ”“July 31st Seaside House. Quite pleasant. Got up early. Had to hurry to get to the boat at 8. All came to Isleboro where we were to stop a week. We enjoyed the sail down the river. This is a pretty place about thirty regular boarders. A very good hotel cottages and tents look pretty. We spent the P. M. Tramping up on the hill. Sat on the beach this eve with Joe and Nellie. I think we will have a pleasant time here”. “November 1st Pleasant. Examination at school. I got very indignant at Mr. Kelley for adjourning school to go to Waterville to vote and refused to close the school for him. I could not help it. He went off in such a mean way. I am sorry tho that I did not accommodate him but I was as right as he was”. “November 3rd Pleasant. I opened school at half past nine and when Mr. Kelley came we had a strong discussion. I was provoked and so was he. I wish I had not meddled with him at all since he is little he cannot take an explanation or talk without arguing. Home this eve. The Republicans have got their 329. Garfield. I am sorry for the country”. Mary’s 1882 diary is similar. She continues with her studies is very active in church and school politics and seems to be a generally pleasant young woman. Though this is the oldest diary in the archive it does not yet mention her meeting Edwin and it is uncertain when and how they would meet. Mary’s diaries are considerably smaller than Edwin’s and her handwriting can be occasionally quite small and cramped but this does not inhibit comprehension too often. These diaries would be an exceptional addition to the collection of anyone interested in Maine's history 19th century medical education 19th century Bowdoin College or Harvard or the experiences of men and women prior to settling down to form a family. Edwin’s 1873 diary is about 3/4 full of entries but the 1874 1875 and 1877 diaries are completely full of handwritten entries of a mostly easily comprehensible and clear script. For Mary’s diaries the 1880 diary has entries everyday until May 3rd and then there are blank pages until early June. After June 7th Mary is faithful to the diary and there are full entries until the end of the year. Mary's 1882 diary has steady entries up to February 20th then blank until May 4th and then after that she keeps her diary intermittently filling about 50% of the pages for the rest of the year. Most of the diaries have other papers and ephemera either stuck in between pages or in the little pouches in the front and back of the diary. These are mostly receipts for medical supplies and medicines as well as some short letters. Diaries range in size from 4x3 inches to 7.5x3.5 inches. They are overall in Good condition with some more age-worn than others. Pages and covers all appear to be intact some loosening of spines but no significant separation. Overall Fair to Good. ; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF EDWIN AND MARY STETSON FAMILY DOCTOR DAMARISCOTTA NEWCASTLE BRUNSWICK MAINE LINCOLN ACADEMY BOWDOIN COLLEGE HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS SINGLE YOUTH IN MAINE 19TH CENTURY MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS POISONING AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL AMERICANA ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL; Signed by Author . unknown‎

‎PFC GORDON L KENNEY P F C‎

‎1943 & 1945 ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN SERVICEMAN SERVING WITH THE DISTINGUISHED 45TH TROOP CARRIER SQUADRON LOVINGLY ADDRESSED TO HIS WIFE BUTCH‎

‎45th Troop Carrier Squadron Beacon New York Europe. Good with no dust jacket. 1943. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating detailed set of two World War II manuscript diaries handwritten by P. F. C. Gordon L. Kenney 1922-2019 of Beacon New York. Kenney kept these diaries while he was serving in the distinguished 45th Troop Carrier Squadron. To learn more about Kenney see BIO NOTES at the end of the listing. Kenney wrote these diaries for his future wife Esther. He refers to her as "Dear Butch" and sometimes as "sweetheart". His love for Esther knows no bounds: ".tonight looking up skies I saw my ever present 'shining star' superstitious Idol worshiper No - just a symbol - remember Esther - Shining Star - I wrote this all the way over on the boat and ever since nearly every night there is a star brighter than the rest and when I seem to feel the closest to you I look up and bless you if I don't see a misty cloudy halo around my star." May 14 1943. It is delightful to know that only six months after his final 1945 diary entry Gordon and Esther would marry in Beacon New York and live long lives together. Kenney's entries are generally long and newsy describing his daily life in the 45th Troop Carrier Squadron. Depending on the day Kenney would write news from the front lines including providing gut-wrenching insight into the reality on the ground. One other days Kenney would detail his interactions with his peers and superiors his daily work tasks on the base his thoughts on how the war effort is progressing thoughts about people and events back home and so much more. According to records as to the dates and locations of the 45th Squadron's service Kenney was stationed in the following places while keeping his two diaries: Egypt Algeria French Morocco Tunisia Sicily and England. He ends the second diary while at sea headed to the USA from England in May 1945. Some excerpts give the flavour of Kenney's diaries: "Our first real Loss in Combat. Our superb Grande Navy - our brave heroes of the deep - Some Shit! 35 planes went on a mission to Sicily last night flying time 4 hrs 15 minutes 15 minutes of God For Saken hell! The real sob is our "own" Navy was the aggressors. 12 of 14 planes are missing from our own group. As the airplanes started dumping their loads the sky was suddenly illuminated. The 36th suffered the most.We have some paratroopers in our own dispensery who were wounded some bad. A good many ships did not drop their load. I'm praying that our boys bellied down and had a chance to use their Maya Wests life preservers. There was a Para Troop General who might have jumped. It is very doubtful whether any of those who jumped lived. Those below refused to acknowledge our signals and flares and radio perhaps because they were busy with landing operations and had just been bombed." July 12 1943. "Took all the outgoing mail to Group this morning. Rerouted some mail and went down to the club and cleaned up a bit.Looks like everyone one enjoyed the one year anniversary overseas party. The gasoline stove has been set up so we now have warm water.Made 50 cents in 30 minutes by rubbing St Hill's head and back.Sending home some X-Mas presents if I can get them by B. C.Bill Etchells and I went to the movie up at Group.Tail Gunner - real good show. Sgt Vang is going to to give me piano lessons - wonder when I'll get a chance to get up.Stores selling clothes and all restaurants are closed in Trapani Italy. Food shortage in one city in Sicily caused a riot and raid by civilians. No wonder many city girls have joined the red light dwellers. People have to eat." November 18 1943. "Tension is every where there always is when we hear something is going to pop even if we don't know what. While I was on a pass the boys had to put static lines on all the ships. There has been heavy air traffic all afternoon and on into tonight. Upstairs. We have a number of Bomber bases around us" March 23 1945. "It has been announced that General Patton has crossed the Rhine and is into Germany.I hope out boys make it out OK.12: 15 our planes sstarted to come in all of them were pretty bad shot up. Col Lewis our 24 year old CO was seen to go up in flames. A buzz bomb nearly broke up the formation as they took off from a field near Coldchester.Bob Milling's ship had a flat tire but made a beautiful one wheel landing. Two of our ships landed safely in Belgium and in territory near the Rhine. #83 hydratic line was shot away and she taxiedd right off the runway and cracked a wing into a radio pole crew chief Shaffer really got hit bad and he was landed at an emergency field.Box and Laine and myself had to fold all teh American static lines from the planes other outfits have suffered greater than ours. I understand Bert walker is missing too" March 24 1945." STOP PRESS. It has been announced tomorrow is to be officially VE Day Churchill will speak at 3 PM" May 7 1945. He ends the momentous day with these words: "Visited the chapel a short time ago. It was very quiet - no one was around. I got to thinking. As long as I remember I have been in a house a beautiful house uncompared anywhere so peaceful & restful--then I went outside for a walk-the door got locked from the Inside & for a time a long time I wandered around helplessly-at last I found the door beginning to open. THANKS LORD" May 7 1945. Kenney kept his 1943 diary for six full days in February including his 21st birthday! and then wrote in it consistently from mid-March through December. In 1945 Kenney kept his diary consistently from January 1 through May 19. Kenney is a thoughtful and detailed author. Most days he writes he absolutely fills the pages to the brim. The 1943 diary measures 9 x 6 inches and the 1945 diary measures 8 x 5 inches. Both diaries are hadcovered and the spine pages and covers are intact. There is some age toning present on the pages but otherwise the diaries are in very good condition. The writing is mostly in pen with some pencil and Kenney's hand is extremely legible. Overall VG. BIO NOTES: Gordon Lamont Kenney 1922-2019 was born in Beacon New York. He trained as a paratrooper and served in WWII in the Army Air Transportation Corps in North Africa Jerusalem and Sicily. He married Esther MacPherson 1923-2012 on September 9 1945. Gordon and Esther were the first couple to be married at the newly constructed Presbyterian Church in Beacon. They had three children Bruce Katharine and Richard. A musical man Gordon played clarinet and sang in the Southern Dutchess Singers community choir. He worked in trucking and then as a laboratory technician. He was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 1 in Beacon NY and was a well-known amateur gemologist. ; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎UNKNOWN MEDICAL STUDENT‎

‎1868-1869 Manuscript Notes Chronicling Lectures of Trailblazing University of Michigan Medical Professors Dr. Sager and Dr. Palmer‎

‎Ann Arbor Michigan University OF Michigan Michigan Medical School. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a terrific jam-packed manuscript journal filled with hundreds of pages of notes kept by a diligent medical student at the University of Michigan detailing months of lectures given by two of the medical school’s renowned professors Dr. Abram Sager 1810-1877 and Dr. Alonzo B. Palmer 1815-1887. In this excellent manuscript the medical student has filled approximately 291 pages plus the front and back covers with notes from lectures they attended between November 1868 and mid-January 1869. More than half of the book is filled with notes from lectures given by medical school Dean and Professor of Obstetrics Dr. Sager. The rest of the book is chock-full of notes from the lectures on general medicine and hygiene given by Dr. Alonzo B. Palmer. To learn more about Sager Palmer and the University of Michigan Medical Department of the late 1800s see BIO NOTES following the listing. While we do not know who the student note-taker is we suspect it may be Dr. Charles Tanner Bennett who graduated from the U of Michigan medical school in 1871. There is a signature that we think could possibly be C. Bennett in the front of the book. Our medical student has recorded about two months of lectures from obstetrics and pathology medicine and hygiene. The lectures given by Dr. Sager are about pregnancy labor birth postpartum newborn care and obstetrical complications. The lectures given by Dr. Palmer are from his Pathology Practice of Medicine and Hygiene course. The Hygiene course was eliminated in April 1869 so this student would have been in the last class to receive these lectures assuming it was a full-year course. A sampling of topics covered in the obstetrics lectures include signs of pregnancy superfetation syncope in pregnancy Phthisis pulmonalis apoplexy movements of the fetus in utero extrauterine gestation fetal assessment parturition conduct of labor dystocia rheumatism of the uterus fecal obstruction deformities of the pelvis uterine rupture monstrosity postmortem and so many more. The medicine and hygiene lectures cover many topics including superexcitation with change of function inflammations healthy nutrition tuberculosis fevers. Malaria cholera typhoid yellow fever influenza diphtheria and much more. Notes on each large topic contain sub-topics discussion on diagnosis and intervention. Interventions include a variety of treatments from medicines to nutrition. There are a few medical recipes in the book such as the ingredients for hydrocephaloid: “Brandy ammonia wine quinia quinine extract”. There is a partially removed page at the back of the book that lists the three reasons why alcohol should be used in the treatment of ailments. An excerpt: “.Whenever the nervous system is exhausting itself by an acuity in exception of other functions. When it will enable a person to digest more food than without it…”. This manuscript of medical notes provides exciting insight into the lecture style and topics covered by two of the University of Michigan’s pioneering medical faculty. This book would be an excellent addition to the collection of anyone interested in 19th century American medical education obstetrics general medicine and infectious disease. It is also a valuable piece of University of Michigan’s history. BIO NOTES: Dr. Abram Sager 1810-1877 was born in New York State. He had a background in botany and zoology having graduated from Castleton Medical College. He began his time at the University of Michigan in 1842 teaching botany and zoology. In 1847 Sager and his colleagues Dr. Zina Pitcher and Dr. Silas H. Douglass worked together to establish the Medical Department at the University of Michigan The department welcomed its first students in the Fall of 1849. Dr. Sager was assigned to the school’s department of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children. He acted as both professor and Chair of the department. Dr. Sager was also the elected Dean and Secretary of the U of Michigan Medical School from 1868-1875. He resigned as Dean and became Emeritus Professor due to ill health. Dr. Sager was married to Sarah E. Dwight 1818-1893 of Detroit and together they had eight children. Dr. Alonzo Benjamin Palmer 1815-1887 was born in Ostego county New York. He taught Medicine and Pathology at the University of Michigan’s Medical Department beginning in 1852. In 1864 he was appointed Professor of Pathology Practice of Medicine and Hygiene. The course in hygiene was discontinued in April 1869. From 1869 to 1880 Palmer’s title was that of Professor of Pathology and Practice of Medicine. Dr. Palmer was Dean of the Medical Department beginning after Dr. Sager’s departure from 1875-1879 and 1880-1887. Notably Dr. Palmer was the Dean who oversaw the admission of women into the U of Michigan Medical Department in 1870. As well as his impressive career at the U of Michigan Palmer was also president of the Michigan Medical Society and an instructor at both Berkshire Medical College and Bowdoin. Dr. Palmer was married twice to Caroline Wright 1821-1846 and to Love Maria Root 1837-1901. He does not appear to have had any children. The hardcover book 8x6 inches. It contains 141 pages of obstetrics lectures and 150 pages of medicine and hygiene lectures plus notes on some additional endpages and on the inside covers. There are about 5 pages that have been intentionally ripped by the student no missing content and one page at the end of the book appears to have been torn out altogether. While showing typical signs of age and wear the binding is loose but intact all pages are accounted for and the covers are fading but intact. The spine is chipping significantly but is holding up. Overall Fair to Good.; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 292 pages . hardcover‎
