On offer is a little manuscript diary in a flip-top notebook that is as energetic and rapid-fire as the mind of any typical girl juggling the excitement of American teenage life. So busy is our author that this diary could easily be renamed A Cool Girls Guide to Atlanta in the 1940s! Our fabulous author is Julia Ann Dobson 1926-2021. She was born to William Alonzo Dobbie Dobson and Edith McKenzie. Her father was the Scout Executive of the Atlanta Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America. Julia grew up in and near Atlanta Georgia. She attended Druid Hills High School. After graduation she attended Shorter College and was a home ec major University of Georgia where she pledged Kappa Delta. In 1948 Julia married Henry Winter Griffith 1926-1993. Winter was a high achieving athlete and academic attending both Emory University and the University of South Carolina. He was in active duty in the US Navy and sailed on the USS Shangri-La. He became a physician. Julia and Winter divorced in around 1975. Following her divorce Julia became a home builder and restorer even working on housing projects with Jimmy Carter and Habitat for Humanity! Julia writes on and off between Aug 23 1941 through July 22 1945 but the entries are often out of order and vary in length. She has crossed out some of her entries but theyre still fully legible under the scribbles! . Some of her entries are written in a tiny neat hand to fit in more content others are scrawled. Julias diary begins when she is a few months shy of 15 in August of 1941 and she concludes in the summer shes 18. Excerpts give the flavour of Julias fast-paced diary which clearly reflects her life. Her first entry dated Aug 23-30 1941 is written on page 4 of the diary: The week of Daddys conference. It was held in Miami Fla. I really had one of the most wonderful times of my life

I went on the AIL hayride with Winter. We went out to Betty Croswells cousins farm Mr. Kellys farm. We had wieners in the back yard. Then we went down to the lake and Winter sang for every body
Nov 6 1943. I went to Sunday School and church. I had a date with Don for Vespers we doubledated with Patty and Pete. We left after the first part of Vespers then we went to Jones to get something to drink then we rode around awhile
Jan 2 1944. I went to the Boys High graduation with Winter. He was the class orator. He won a gold B. After graduation we went to the Paradise Room at the Henry Grady hotel. We doubledated with Tommy Freeman and Shirley Larmour Jan 27 1944. Winter and I went to Ansley Club for lunch and the afternoon. We went to Rainbow Roof for supper and dancing June 28 1945. The diary measures approximately 5x3 inches. It is a small Pocket Notebook containing 35 pages with writing on the front and back of each. It is about 95% complete for a total of about 68 pages of writing. It is in overall good condition with only the typical signs of age and wear. 1943 Manuscript Diary and Personal Items of a US Navy Recruit from Ohio Who is Delighted to Join Up and Describes Daily Training with Enthusiasm and Rare Detail
Great Lakes Training Center Chicago Nellie Ohio. Good with no dust jacket. 1943. Hardcover. On offer is a diary that doubles as a coming-of-age tale of a 20-year-old newly inducted US Navy serviceman from Nellie Ohio kept for three months in 1943 while he trained at the Great Lakes Training Center near Chicago graduated took a short leave back in Ohio and headed to his next base in Hitchcock Texas. During this time he describes in very impressive and rarely-seen detail every aspect of his training and adjustment to army life. The author of this diary is Charles Albert Rodock 1922-2012 who worked as a grinder at the Timken Company in Canton Ohio for his entire career. He married bookkeeper Mary Kathryn Jones 1927-2017 and together they had one child Deborah Jean b. 1952. To learn more about Charles and the Rodock family of Ohio see BIO NOTES at end of listing. Charles registered for the army in 1942 at age 19 and was inducted into the army on March 9 1943 and began training at the Great Lakes Training Centre on March 19 1943. He kept this diary carefully until a few days before he was transferred to the Naval Air Station Hitchcock Texas in late June 1943.Charles follows the flow of his My Life in the Service diary to the tee. He fills five pages titled My Buddies and My Buddies in the Service to record and have his pals record their names addresses and some well wishes. He leaves the intervening pages blank and picks back up at the diary section of the book and begins right at the beginning: I was sent to Columbus for induction into the US Army. I chose Navy and was held over that night March 9. Over the next several days he writes of each days events related to his induction into the service from his swearing in to his medical checks to his travel to Chicago where he arrived on March 18. His energy for his new job as a member of the US Navy cannot be overstated nor can the detail with which he describes his daily routine as he trains into his role. Excerpts give a sense for the vigour and detail with which Rodock writes: Up at 5: 30 in the morning. Took a physical exam. Passed with flying colors. Got a real set of clothes and sure wasnt sorry I joined the Navy. Sure got my first taste of navy chow. Breakfast was good Dinner fish and Supper stews. What a time when I first got into my Navy blues which made me feel like I just became a man March 19. Went to morning quarters inspection for the first time. We have it every morning from here on out. Had a class in Navy statutes and then clothes rolling. I got all of mine done in good shape. Bag inspection is soo so the C. P. O said. Company is beginning to go to work and get things done. We got our smokery privilege but no canteen privilege yet. Got a very nice picture from Betty April 7. Got a class in boxing and final two shots. They were the worst two and one fellow fainted as we were about to leave the drill hall. Then we drilled four hours in the afternoon. I stood guard while the boys went to a show
April 8. To day was a long tiresome and very disgusting day. We were on regimented work detail. Started off with early morning quarters and then fire drill
. Ended up by standing guard from 8: 00PM util 12: 00 midnight April 9. We got up and then started to pack our things sea going style. We cleaned up the barracks and started to our new camp at 8: 30 AM. Arrived in Camp Green Bay at 10: 00 AM and met our new C. P. O. He gave us instructions on first about every thing. I met Buck at the canteen at 5: 30PM. He sure was glad to see Jack and I. We had quite a get together. I took him into my barracks and I went into his afterwards. Then I had charge of taking the boys to the show. We saw Cabin in the Sky. Then we got back to our new barracks and prepared for bed. It sure was a great day and a busy one. Because of our first time for moving April 24. This looks as if the last day Jack and I are going to be together. He is being drafted to Saben Pass Texas and I am going to Hitchcock Texas air base. We packed our gear and left New Orleans naval station at 8: 30. We rode the train all night and got in Houston Texas June 11. I unloaded bombs weighing 325 lbs almost all day long. I then cleaned up and went on Liberty. I sure was tired and didnt feel like doing much. Met several nice gals and sure had a good time June 21. While this diary does not contain the action that a frontline WWII diary might the detail with which Charles describes his experience leaving nothing out from the moment he is inducted into the army through his graduation from training and trip to his first naval base makes it a true treasure. This diary would be of interest to anyone interested in World War Two from the perspective of the young recruit or the lived experience of a young small town man coming-of-age in the army. This diary measures approximately 6x4.5 inches. 53 pages are filled with long newsy legible diary entries an additional 5 pages have names and addresses of the authors pals and approximately 4 other pages in the diary have been filled in. The diary is hardcover and in good condition with only typical signs of age and wear typical of a diary of its age. Included with the diary are a number of Rodocks photos ephemera and a personal bible gifted to Rodock and inscribed by his reverend. These accompanying pieces add colour to Rodocks story. BIO NOTES: Born in Nellie Coshocton County Ohio Charles Albert Rodock graduated from Warsaw High School in the Class of 1940. He then moved to Canton to work for Timken Company as a grinder in the Bearing factory where he would work his entire career until his retirement in 1985. In 1947 Charles married Mary Kathryn Jones a bookkeeper at First National Bank and later at the Bearing factory. Charles and Mary had one daughter Deborah Rodock Maiese b. 1952. Deborah married Dr. Philip M. Maise in 1978. Deborah is a highly educated and accomplished researcher who attained a Masters degree in public administration from George Washington University. Charles was an active member of his community being involved in the Dueber United Methodist Church Canton Lodge No. 60 F&A. M. On offer is a pair of diaries kept by the granddaughter of two Knox County Ohio pioneers who lived her entire life in Jackson Township. The author is Margaret Melick Hall 1839-1911. She was born to parents William Melick 1806-1878 and Sarah Beatty 1808-1888. Margarets grandparents were David Melick 1784-1867 and Hannah Hankins 1789-1853 who were the second settlers in Jackson Township Knox County Ohio arriving there in 1810. Margaret married Allison G. Hall 1835-1912 a farmer on March 9 1865. Margaret married Allison after the death of his first wife Harriet 1842-1861 who was Margarets younger sister. Together Margaret and Allison had five children: Eldora Ella 18681956 Major Grant 18731943 Addie 18781963 Eliza 18801966 and Earl 18841887. Margaret keeps her first diary at age 58 writing daily and filling the book from cover to cover from Jan 1-Sept 15 1897. She begins her second diary at age 71. It covers May 21 1910-April 14 1911. Margaret keeps the diary herself until March 24 1911. She died on March 25 at 4: 00 am and her diary was immediately continued by one of her daughters with the first entry by her daughter written the very night of her death. Margaret's writing focuses on the daily happenings in Jackson mostly as they relate to her husband and children. She touches on her own work as a farm wife her church and social commitments local gossip and news she seems to record the deaths of everyone in town! and her husbands farming. As a member of the Melick family Margaret has close ties to Jacksons early history and she frequently discusses her interactions with other Melicks. The diaries are both softcover composition books. They measure approx 8x7 inches and 8x10 inches respectively. The 1897 diary is in good condition save for expected age toning bends and minor tears. It contains 74 pages and is 100% complete. The 1910-11 diary is in fair condition with some small rips to the cover and some tiny loss to the edges of about half of the book approx 1mm loss which does not impact readability. Unfortunately it appears an insect has gotten to some of the pages. The insect damage impacts entries from Jan 20 1911 until the end of the diary. Varying small holesinterfere with some minimal content from Jan 31 1911 through the end of the diary. Pages 61-69 are impacted most with approximately 6 words on each page being unreadable. Context is not impacted. Please request photos from seller if this is of concern. The diary contains 72 pages and is 100% complete. Side note: on one page in the 1910 diary it seems a previous owner of the diary was using it for genealogy research as they have underlined some names in blue pen and noted some dates in blue pen above Margarets writing. Paris: Baudry's European Library 1835. Half Morocco. Pebbled cloth on boards. Very Good. Six volume half morocco set. 8vo. 21.5 by 13.5 cm. The Complete Works is comprised of four volumes and these were issued in 1835; the Life is two volumes issued in 1833. Nonetheless the contemporary dark green binding is matching for the six volumes. The Life volumes contain three steel engravings. Each volume containing bookplate with vignette illustration of geese taking to flight of Landon K. Thorne Bindings with four raised bands on spine and somewhat elaborate gilt decoration. Condition: Rubbing by joints generally speaking with subtle repair in first volume of Life front joint. Edges with shelfwear and a few other rubbed areas. Interiors with age toning and scattered light foxing. For the particular paper stock used it is our sense that the foxing is mild indeed. Overall a handsome set. Baudry's European Library unknown
