Samuel Dresser
1859 Manuscript Diary of a New Hampshire Farmer Engaged in Community Advocacy His Church and Supporting His Aging Parents While Running a Bustling Business
Sutton New Hampshire. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1859. Softcover. On offer is a fascinating little journal that is absolutely packed with insight into the lived experience of a mid-19th century New Hampshire everyman. The diarist is Samuel Dresser 1796-1868. He was born in Chester New Hampshire to the senior Samuel Dresser 1763-1859 and Sarah Story 1774-1869. In 1835 Samuel married Sarah Eaton 1800-1878 in Sutton New Hampshire where they would settle and farm for the remainder of their lives. They had three children Lucretia 1836-1858 Franklin 1840-1845 and Leonard 1838-1930. Sadly when he kept this diary only Leonard was still alive. Lucretia had died of consumption only five months before he began this diary and Franklin died in childhood. Samuel is a fascinating individual. He is a successful and hardworking farmer a devoted husband and father and an extremely engaged member of this community. In his diary he discusses political engagement and advocacy and historical data supports this with many petitions to the government of New Hampshire that Dresser was involved with available to view. His elderly parents are still alive at the time Dresser kept this diary his father would die a few months after the diary concludes and he is working diligently to find them secure housing in their later years including petitioning the government for support. He farms his own land and also the land of his wifes family the Eatons. It seems their fields are very close together. He also keeps close tabs on his community regularly noting citizens who have passed on or come to visit. He is also very involved in his Church and it seems he helps coordinate Sunday School programs. Some excerpts give the flavour of Dressers writing; Capt William Kendrick dies at the age of 75 yrs 4 mos 10 days of a long and painful illness supposed to originate from a cancer in the bowels May 4. Commenced the pasturing of 1 two yr old heifer and 3 yearlings for Mr. John L. Chadwick. And also 1 yearling steer for Mr. F. Rogers. A fine rain commenced rained most of the afternoon and the night following May 9. Started an a petition for a town meeting to be on the application of Samuel Dresser Sen. The said town meeting will probably take place June 18th 1859 May 28. Raining. Nathan Eaton came here into the place about the 13th of this month to his fathers. He has been over the country much and even to California for Gold and has been prosperous June 17. Still somewhat raining. Argued with Bro. Luther for the support of Father and Mother through their natural lives. I am to pay him $75 per year while they both may live after the decease of one of them one half of the above sum June 21 the next day his parents would move in with the Luthers. Mr. Cummings of Franklin came with Grave Stones for Lucretia Anne
Paid Mr. C. $10.00 and 12.00 more will be due to be paid to Mr. Watson of Warner. Rain in the afternoon June 8. Cool and windy. Carried wool to S. Shepherd of
London 40 lbs. Came at 42 per lb. 16.80. Carried father down to Luthers. He is more feeble on the whole than ever
. Got in two small loads of hay just at night
Mrs. David Morgan and a little boy came here and returned July 23. Dresser is an eloquent writer who is able to communicate a lot of information in few words. While his diary is brief his daily activities are so varied and interesting that his words provide a lot of insight into everything from community organizing to familial relationships within New Hampshire the tragedies of early deaths and the experience of professional farming. For a social historian this journal offers an excellent look into life in rural America immediately prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. For a genealogist this journal contains numerous family references that reach as far away as Ohio. This small journal measures 6.25x 4.0 inches and contains 24 pages. The booklet is not a diary per se but rather a Counting House Almanac. The booklet was meant to be used as an account book for individuals who had accounts with L. S. Learned in Cambridgeport MA. The cover is a heavier brown paper and is in good condition. The booklet is bound with thread and it is in excellent condition as well. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 24 pages; Signed by Author . paperback

Grant, Mrs [Anne MacVicar]
MEMOIRS OF AN AMERICAN LADY WITH SKETCHES OF MANNERS AND SCENERY IN AMERICA AS THEY EXISTED PREVIOUS TO THE REVOLUTION
<p>New York: Printed for Samuel Campbell by D. And G. Bruce 1809. First New York edition. 12mo. viii 344 pages. This book by Scottish-born Anne MacVicar Grant 1755-1838 includes both her recollections of her childhood ages 3 through 13 years that she lived with her parents in colonial Claverack and Oswego New York and her memoir of Madam Catalina Schuyler with whom she lived in Albany. Anne's father Duncan MacVicar was an officer in the British army who had been posted to "the colonies" during the years leading up to what was to become the American Revolution. The family's trip back to Scotland in 1868 was meant to be temporary but Duncan's pro-British sentiments led him to make it permanent. Anne's portrayal of New York pre-revolutionary colonial life between 1758 and 1768 was admired by both Sir Walter Scott and Robert Southey. Originally published in London in 1808 this New York edition was preceded by a 2-volume Boston printing also published in 1809. Doughty, Oswald
A Victorian Romantic. Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Oxford Univ Press 1968-01-01. Hardcover. Good/Good. 8x5x1. Jacket edges are heavily tattered foxing to book edges and end pages internally clean front endpage has writing. This first full-length definitive biography of D. G Rossetti is not re-issued with corrections additions and some new illustrations. The author spent many years in preparation exploring with scholarly impartiality all available published and unpublished material. His book contains much that previous biographers who have tended to describe only the early ars of Rossetti's life have ignored or suppressed. Guided only by evidence of the facts he has not afraid to be frank but has avoided any sensationalism. In drawing his conclusions about the death whether by accident or design of Rossetti's wife Elizabeth Siddal and about his passion for the wife of William Morris Professor Doughty is able to illuminate much that was hitherto obscure in the symbolism of the sonnets particularly The Hous of Life sequence and show that these two events influenced all Rossetti's subsequent behavior and work. It measures approx 6.0x3.5 inches and contains 80 pages. It is 75% complete. The binding is sewn and has loosened. The first page has come loose but is present. The handwriting is legible. The ledger comes in its own hard cover case made out of heavy cardboard and bound by a red leatherette binding. For a military historian this is a superb record of a very successful Civil War officer legislator and businessman. The connection to the U. S. Colored Troops and the celebrated Buffalo Soldiers makes this an exceptional connection to American history. For a genealogist this autobiography and accompanying ledger offer a gold mine of information about this singular individual who in many ways is a representative of the type of people who built the post-Civil War America. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 80 pages; Signed by Author . paperback

Betty Jean Willison
1930 Collection of an Adorable Diary and the Handmade Art of a 10-Year-Old Washington Girl
Tacoma Washington Usa. Good with no dust jacket. 1930. Softcover. On offer is a delightful collection containing a school aged girls pocket diary and a collection of her handmade artwork. The diary and artwork were created by Betty Jean legal birth name: Andrina Elizabeth Willison b.1920 of Tacoma Washington. She was in elementary school at the time she kept this diary but would go on to graduate from Stadium High School and George Washington University. In 1942 Betty Jean would marry Lloyd Garrison 1917-2007 in Palm Beach Florida where Lloyd was stationed with the US Navy. They divorced in California in 1971. Unfortunately we were unable to trace the rest of Willisons life. Betty Jean kept her diary in 1930 and from March 10 through May 1st. While brief her entries paint a quite lovely picture of the life of this 10-year-old girl with her family friends and at school Some excerpts: Last night I went up to Virginias house. I made the cutest garage for a little car and she made a little Gas Station March 12. Saturday we played baseball and every time I was up they caught my fly. So it made it very bad for me Mar 15. Last night I went to the Symphony concert. My cousin played in it. Her name was Virginia Willison Mar 20. Last night I played Jacks. I was in my 60s when my sister was only in her 30s April 19. Yesterday we played house. I was the maid Jessie was the father and my cousin was the mother and my little sister was the child April 27. Along with her sweet diary are several pieces of Betty Jeans artwork some of which are signed by her most being forms of paper applique. Altogether it is a charming diary and collection of a childs artwork highlighting the daily life of a happy and secure school age child at the outset of the Great Depression. The diary consists of a small top-bound notebook measuring 5 inches by 3 inches. It contains only 24 pages all with diary entries with evidence that a number of pages had been removed at the back of the notebook. The covers are in good condition as is the binding. Lucretia Howe (Pope) Upham
1881 Diary of the Wealthy Wife of an Entrepreneur and Politician in Spencer Massachusetts Who Wants for Nothing Travels and Became Known As the oldest Person in Spencer
Spencer Massachusetts New York City New York. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1881. Softcover. On offer is a splendid 19th century diary kept by a middle-aged woman born into the Massachusetts Pope family and married to a successful wool manufacturer and member of the Spencer MA town council. Our author is Lucretia Howe Upham nee Pope 1824-1916. She was born to parents William and Eliza Prince Pope. In 1853 Lucretia married William Upham 1825-1882 and they resided in the Pope family mansion in Spencer. William was a highly successful wool manufacturer. He was a self-made businessman finding success after being taken into the care of a family friend following his fathers death at age two. William Upham was a member of the Spencer town council for 24 years until his unexpected death while on an excursion in California at age 57. He was also a respected philanthropist. Lucretia and William had no children but helped care for their nieces and nephews. Sadly William would die only a few months after Lucretia concluded this diary in June of 1882 of apoplexy. When Lucretia died in 1916 at the age of 92 the Boston Globe named her the Oldest Person in Spencer. While Lucretia lives in Spencer she is often taking trips to New York City where she attends the theatre shops and visits friends. She also takes day trips to Boston Massasoit Andover and Springfield. She spends a lot of her time attending and supporting her church. She is also a very involved aunt often writing about her nieces and nephews caring for their children and caring for other members of her family and community. The diary entries are sometimes brief sometimes in depth but always newsy with reference mostly to Lucretia and Williams daily lives. It includes a lot of name-dropping of friends family and associates in Massachusetts and New York. Obviously educated Lucretia also comments on other events including the attempted assassination of President James A. Garfield. In the memoranda section she has kept good notes on her expenses most months. Some excerpts give the flavour of the diary: Word came J. W. J. Sick. Company postponed. Jenny sick all day. Give sulphur for cough. Great snow storm. Mr Upham goes to Boston. Jennie coming down with measles. Sleep on sofa Jan 21. Went to Worcester to buy a dress. So cold. Went only w Mrs. Tanis. Mr. Cruickshanks lecture on Egypt and pyramids. Dr. Pennington married to Ms. Field Feb 2. Little Anna Pope spent the day. Pretty sick child. Held her most of the time. Took supper at Massasoit. Twenty six couples. Nice time. Postal from E. P. P. Mr. U brought me pin from New York Feb 11. Bought gloves and handkerchiefs and went after lunch to Newark. Took carriage. Called on the bride. Found her splendid. Called at Mr. Jones. Back to N York at six. Went to Madison Square Theatre in evening. Hazel Kirke Georgia Cayvan Feb 25 while on a trip to NYC. Left at half past nine for N York saw much of the smash up near Baltimore. Train late. Mr Upham met me at Jersey City. Laurie Dennis called in the evening. Mr and Mrs Baldein called
March 10. President assassinated July 2. Gloomy day on account of anxiety for President July 3. Left for home on 11 oclock train. Mrs. Shackford with us. Bessie Bateman Aunt Eustus and Everett met us at East Brookfield. Found house locked. Key at Josephs. Mary gone to Worcester. Jennie came at noon sick with a cold. Made a fire in the damp house as soon as I could and Nellie gave bread Nov 9. Staid at home and cooked Christmas dinner. Josephs family here. Mary gone all day and night. Christmas cards
Fred and Cheryl Mrs. Holder Mrs. Champan Mrs. Temple Carrie Westin Susan Brown Mr. Hayes Dec 25. This diary provides a terrific peek behind-the-curtain of upper class America in the late 19th century. It also gives excellent insight into the womans work completed by a wealthy childless woman who had the resources to delegate all tasks. As our diarist enjoys naming her friends and acquaintances there is a lot of content in here for researchers of both Massachusetts and New York. A delightful diary. The diary measures approx 6x3 inches. It contains 183 pages plus memoranda. It is about 80% complete. The soft leather cover is in good condition as is the spine and all pages. The writing is legible. Overall VG. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 183 pages; Signed by Author . paperback
