INO, Shozo, KANAZAWA, Kaichi, KOKUBUN, Ichitaro, SAKAI, Asahiko, SEKI, Hideo, TAKAYAMA, Tsuyoshi, and TSUKAHACHI, Kenjiro
Lincoln
Tokyo: Akane Shobo 1952. Hardcover. 12mo. Color pictorial paper over boards. 113pp. Illustrations one full color map/pictorial endpapers. Very good. Faint edgewear and touch of rubbing. Tight attractive copy of this charming Japanese biography of Abraham Lincoln for juveniles authored by this group that called itself Jidou Bungakusha Kyokai Youth Literary Scholar Association which jointly authored many such titles for children. Since our knowledge of Japanese is minimal -- O.K. nonexistent -- we are unable to determine edition. Most unusual. Interesting that in the U.S. Benjamin Thomas's "Lincoln: A Biography" was published this same year and that interest in Lincoln seems to have been at an all-time high -- even apparently in the Orient. It's also fascinating that despite the illustrator's best efforts to depict in line drawings many scenes from Lincoln's life not only the faces but even some of the settings and landscapes appear vaguely oriental. SANDERS, Everett (1882-1950)
Typed Letter Signed / Unsigned Photograph
This Indiana attorney and politician served his state in Congress from 1917 to 1925 then was appointed President Calvin Coolidge's personal secretary during his second term; Herbert Hoover appointed him chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1932 a post he filled until 1934. Brief TLS 1p 6¼" X 9¼" Washington DC 1925 December 12. Very good. Faintly age toned. On "The White House" letterhead Sanders grants a favor to a former Illinois congressman: "I am enclosing not present! a letter which the President has addressed in his own hand to your friend Mr. A.W. Hannah of Chicago. You will appreciate how seldom the President is able to write letters of this kind because of the time it would take. However he was very glad to comply with Mr. Hannah's request made through you. The letter is being sent unfolded in case he should desire to have it framed." Bold full signature in brown ink. Alexander W. Hannah was a Chicago businessman and well-known autograph collector of this period and clearly took advantage of a friendship with an ex-representative to call in a favor. One wonders what it was that President Coolidge wrote out by hand! With original unstamped White House envelope addressed to Hannah. Also accompanied by a superb glossy 8½" X 6½" black and white news agency photograph depicting Sanders and a half dozen men standing around the newly-planted gravestone of Calvin Coolidge. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso titles this "In Memoriam -- Republican Leaders Pay Tribute to Coolidge" and dates it 3 August 1934 describing the scene: "Impressive ceremonies were held today. at the gravesite of President Calvin Coolidge to mark the eleventh anniversary of his elevation to the presidency. In this photograph a group of state and national Republican leaders are pictured placing a wreath on the grave of their late leader." It then lists the senators and representatives pictured among them "Everett Sanders former Republican National Committee chairman and secretary to President Coolidge is placing the wreath." A fine pair. unknown

(GRANT, Ulysses S)
Galena and Its Lead Mines
N.p.: N.p. n.y. Hardcover. Small 4to. Full green calf with gilt spine lettering. Pp. 681-696 rectos only. 12 steel engravings 1 map. Very good. Mildly edgeworn with spine and binding edges irregularlysunned to golden brown. Bibliographically cryptic but clearly relatively recent i.e. post-WW2 facsimile reprint of this 16-page extract from the May 1866 issue of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" Vol. XXXII No. CXCII -- an article that follows up on U.S. Grant's postwar fame profiling the famed lead mining town in northwest Illinois that had become his home just prior to the Civil War. Front wrapper engraving depicts Galena's Main Street bulging with people assembled to hear the returning hero. A massive banner spans the street proclaiming "Hail to the Chief Who in Triumph Advances." Though an extract it is self-contained and sought after in its own right. This undated reprint circa 1970 is printed on an off-white stock artificially age toned to lend it a period feel. It's also slightly enlarged from the original. Scarce. N.p. hardcover

N.p. Springfield: Illinois Commission 1964. Broadside. Folio 30" X 23". Fine. Superb broadside printing of the Gettysburg Address created specifically for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Below the large headline in deep blue this typographically interesting piece depicts the Illinois State Historical Society's holograph version of Lincoln's masterpiece at center at actual size in deep purple. GIRDNER, John H (ca 1857-1933)
Typed Letter Signed
This prominent New York physician a close friend of William Jennings Bryan was brought in as a consultant after the assassination attempt on President Garfield and was the last survivor of the four physicians brought in to attend the president; he took part in Alexander Graham Bell's disastrous attempt to use metal detection to pinpoint and extract the bullet causing a fatal infection; later he developed the Girdner telephonic bullet probe supposedly plagiarizing the concept from Bell; in 1869 he was the first physician to use cadaver skin to cover a burn wound on a 10-year-old child. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1912 March 22. Addressed to Charles White of the New York Hall of Records later a noted Abraham Lincoln scholar. Very good. Moderately age toned. Chatty note to the tax commissioner on his medical office letterhead reading in part: "I regret as much as you can that we do not see more of each other but I have got an endless job on my hands which requires all my time sleeping and waking." Of his profession Girdner remarks: "You remember I used to want to reform other people and things: well one day I looked myself over and I have been a busy man ever since and the end of the job is not in sight. You call me a 'rich physician' and so I am but my wealth is not of the kind your office recognises as taxable fortunately for me. I think you do yourself an injustice when you speak of having 'slipped back'. You know the old Methodist doctrine that one 'cannot fall from grace' and I am certain that when I knew you you were so well grounded in the faith that not even the temptations etc. of your present occupation and environment can drag you down." Bold full signature. Most unusual. unknown

The Outbreak of the Rebellion in the United States 1861
New York: Kimmel & Forster 1865. Lithograph. Approximately 21" X 26. Very good. Lightly evenly age toned; blank margins either trimmed or edgeworn for the cream mat goes to the image edge at the top and sides while the bottom includes the full title line mat opening 23" X 18¼". First edition. Magnificent allegorical lithograph issued by the famed New York print publisher who also produced a companion piece entitled "The End of the Rebellion in the United States 1865." A large figure of Columbia stands at center atop a huge splitting rock looking to the viewer's right and clutching a waving flag in her right hand; meanwhile her other hand wags a pointing finger toward the viewer's left side. At her feet lie a whip and open shackles representing the abolition of slavery. To the viewer's right stands Abraham Lincoln and indeed the entire right side represents the Republican cause. A stern General Winfield Scott stand behind Lincoln and a crowd of young men strain forward some offering up bags of gold some bearing arms all willing to join the cause; a woman in the foreground covers her eyes and is comforted by two children. The background on this side is horizon of mountains and a glorious sunrise. On Columbia's other side stands the figure of Justice without her usual blindfold raising up her scales in one hand and sword in the other glaring angrily toward all those at the left side of this hectic scene. James Buchanan's sleeps blissfully at the edge of the split rock while next to him crouches his secretary of war John B. Floyd -- who was charged with corruption -- eagerly scooping up gold coins into a large sack. Further back Jefferson Davis clutching a ripped U.S. flag and Alexander H. Stephens stand beside a palm tree with a huge snake coiling up its length and spitting at the scales of justice. An angry cluster of soldiers swirls around them. The background on this side is grim and muted with battle scenes. A superb handsome example of this famous Civil War allegorical print. Kimmel & Forster unknown

1937-1947 Diaries Covering a Decade in the Life of Typical Small Town New York Newlywed As Her Family and Responsibilities Grow
Orchard Park Buffalo New York New York State. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating firsthand glimpse into the daily life of a typical young woman who becomes a wife and mother living near Buffalo New York during the grinding days of the Great Depression and the war years of WWII. This is a collection of two five-year diaries. The author of these two diaries is Edna Bell Pikett Buchheit 1914-1999. Edna was born to Charles and Mary Hammerschmidt Pikett and raised near Buffalo. On October 30 1937 Edna married Charles Francis Buchheit 1913-1997. Together they had two sons Charles and David. Charles called Chuck in the diaries worked as a machinist. They lived near Buffalo around Orchard Park. Charmingly Ednas first diary begins on the day of her nuptials to Charles but her inscription in the front states that the diary was Purchased while on honeymoon so her first few entries must have been made retrospectively. The diary covers Oct 30 1937 through Oct 7 1941. Some excerpts from the first dairy follow: Married at 12. Drove around til supper Left at 8: 30. Stayed overnight at Westfield. Arrived 10: 45. June 9 1941. Ednas second diary begins January 1 1943 and concludes on December 30 1947. Chuck to see me in afternoon and his mother in eve May 28 1943. Rainy all day. I had very bad time. Baby boy 9 lbs 12 oz born 6: 58pm April 16 1947. Ednas entries in the second diary explore her life as the matriarch of a young family supporting her working husband and young children. Her growth from the first diary is evident even her handwriting matures in the second diary. Note: She refers to her husband as Chuck and her eldest son as Chucky. Mostly fair later cloudy. I washed. May 10 1947. These 10 years offer an outstanding window into the world of an ordinary woman and her family as they make their life in the very difficult years of the 1930s and 1940s. For a social historian it is also an excellent look at life in small-town America during this period. It is an excellent resource as well for a Womens Studies program or research as it provides a decades-long look at the life of this woman her roles and those of the women in her life. The first diary measures 5x4 inches contains 365 pages and is about 90% complete. The covers are in fair condition. The hasp on the lock strap is broken. The spine is intact but the back cover has separated from it. The pages are in good condition. Handwriting reasonably legible. The second diary measures 5.5 x4.5 inches. Nyad, Diana
Find a Way
New York: Alfred A. Knopf 2015. First edition. Hardcover. Fair/fair. Nicely signed roughly treated. Signed boldly by Nyad on the first blank in black sharpie no inscription. Blue hardcover in dustjacket stated first edition no number-line. A fair copy of both book and dustjacket. Notably edgeworn with bumping and discoloration along the bottom edge and spine ends impacted. Binding is cocked forward and although all pages are still bound in there is a feeling of looseness. Joints and hinges are solid. All pages are clean and unmarked other than the author's signature. The dustjacket is shiny and bright not clipped but suffers from a series of small toothmarks at the top of the front and rear panels spineward - otherwise this would be a very nice jacket. 308 pp. color photo inserts corresponding to the areas of looseness in the binding. <br/><br/> Alfred A.
