‎Emily Mary Kehoe‎

‎1933-1937 Diary Following a Pennsylvania Girl from Pre-Teen to High School Senior‎

‎Philadelphia PA Pennsylvania. Poor with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating 5 year diary of Emily Mary Kehoe 1920-2013 who writes from age 12 through 17. Born in Manhattan Emily is in her final year of middle school and becomes a teenager on August 2 1933. She keeps the diary until age 17 when she is a senior in high school. In Fall of 1933 Emily begins at Tredyffrin Easttown High School in Berwyn Pennsylvania. Following graduation Emily would go on to attend Ursinus College in Collegeville PA. In 1952 she married Raymond Emanuel Fahnestock 1923-1975. Raymond served in WWII in the 43rd and 63rd Bomb Squads. It does not appear that they had any children though data was somewhat lacking in researching this couple. Although born in Manhattan Emily was raised and settled in Pennsylvania. Emily keeps her diary during the depths of the Great Depression though the world is viewed through the eyes of a child blissfully focused on the coming-of-age events that define a young woman’s life. She begins with optimism and hope listing the resolutions she has made for herself in 1933: “I resolve to: Be more helpful to Mother and Dad/Avoid quarrelling with Honey & Ted/Keep my room closet and dresser neat/Take disappointments quietly/ Keep the friends I have and make more/Keep up in all schoolwork”frontspiece. Her diary records the expected events of a young lady's life. She talks about school and friends. Emily keeps her diary religiously in 1933 and 1934. Her entries become very spotty after that with few entries in the final three years. Her last entry in the diary is on Sept 24 1937. Some excerpts give the flavour of Emily’s entries: “Wed. Cloudy. Cold. School. We won in gym 12-6. Did errands. Put time in on machine. Homework. Bed. In assembly name was called for being on honor roll. Signed book” Jan 25 1933. “Raining. Went to Camp Tweedale Oxford PA. To stay for 10 days. Lunch. Played. Supper. Campfire and bed…” Aug 21 1933. “Clear. Warm. Went to town Mother and I. Eyes improving. Shopped. Lunch. Shopped. Home. Supper. Played ball” Apr 3 1934. “…went to High School. Had fun. Going to like HS. Lunch - played- helped - PML - Supper - Read - Bed. Taking academic courses with Latin and Music. PTOM” Sept 5 1934. “Cloudy – clear. School. Radar Game. We won 7-0 ! ! ! Home Supper Victory Dance. Tired but happy. Mother & Dad went to New York til Sunday” Oct 9 1936“Ted going to Valley Forge Military Academy! ! ! ! ” Nov 2 1936. “Clear. I like Jim James Lovall. Cold. S. S. And Church…Home - Lessons = Went to Miss Brinton’s Sunday School teacher home in Phila - Dinner…” March 7 1937. She makes little reference to the turbulent outside events that affecting so many other Americans. In this her diary offers an interesting view of life in those difficult times. For a social historian this offers a contrast to the journals that describe events from a wider perspective on just how difficult it was living in these time. It is an especially valuable piece as it shows life from the perspective of a child. The diary measures 5x3.75 inches has 365 pages and is approximately 55% complete. The front cover is missing as is the clasp on the locking strap. The spine and binding are barely intact and worn to the point that the back cover may separate in shipping. The pages are all intact and the handwriting is legible. Overall Poor. ; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 365 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎Agnes Stanwood Harrington‎

‎1913 Sweet Diary of a Young Shopgirl Who Moves from Her Home in Maine to New Hampshire Where She Will Soon Begin Her Married Life‎

‎Brunswick Maine Nashua New Hampshire. Good with no dust jacket. 1913. Softcover. On offer is the quaint interesting diary of Agnes Stanwood Harrington 1886-1969 of Brunswick Maine. Agnes was born to Sea Captain William S. Harrington and Fannie A. Skolfield. In 1915 Agnes married William Perley Drowns 1889-1944. He worked as a Brakeman in the rail transport industry. Agnes and William lived in Nashua New Hampshire and had four children though only three survived infancy. At the time she kept this diary Agnes is still living in Brunswick according to her notation in the back of the journal but it seems she moves to New Hampshire in late September and begins seeing “W” likely William her future husband. Agnes kept this diary fairly consistently throughout 1913 beginning when she was 26-years-old she turned 27 on May 19th. Entries describe her day-to-day activities and shed light on the life of a young unmarried working woman in early 20th century New England. The following excerpts will give a feel for her experiences: “Stormy. Worked all day. Went to Military Ball in evening with A. S. C Doris came at night” Apr 11 1913. “My birthday. Sadie gave me a box of stationary. May a pair of stockings. Sadie and Helen and I went to pictures” May 19 1913. “Fair. Worked all day. Henry H & I went to Baltic in evening for circus” Aug 8 1913. “Fair and very warm. Left B for N. H. Got in N. H. For the evening had a fine trip” Sept 27 1913. “Had electric light the first time Friday night Sept 5th. Memo off Sept 6th entry Fair and very warm. U and a friend and I went to Stark Park in afternoon” Sept 28 1913. “Fair. Went to work in the morning in the shoe shop for the first time. Made $1.00” September 29 1913. “Weighed 121 lbs Sat Sept 27 1913 when I go to Manchester” Memoranda. “Cloudy and foggy. Worked all fore-noon. W and I went over to the city and di some shopping” Oct 11 1913. For a social historian this little diary offers a glimpse into a world long gone. It certainly paints a picture of the life of a young woman in urban New England at this time which would be of interest to Women’s Studies researchers. Measuring 4.0 inches by 2.75 inches this small diary contains 91 pages and is approximately 80% complete. The red leatherette cover and binding are in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. The original pencil is still in its holder in the spine. ; Manuscripts; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 91 pages; Signed by Author . paperback‎

‎W K Walker‎

‎1941 Diary of a World War Two WWII Pilot Officer for the Royal Air Force Serving on the Middle East Command in Cairo Egypt‎

‎Cairo Egypt Killay Swansea Wales. Fair with no dust jacket. 1941. Softcover. On offer is a wonderful personal record of a Royal Air Force officer serving in North Africa during the first half of WWII. This diary belonged to Pilot Officer W. K. Walker RAF. Walker was born in Killay Swansea Wales. Unfortunately research has not turned up any additional information on Walker. The diary covers the year 1941 with most of the entries in the first 8 months of the year. Walker was commissioned as a Pilot Officer the lowest commissioned rank in the Royal Air Force. When his diary begins he is beginning a leave. A day later Jan 2 he receives a wire informing him that his father had passed away. After the funeral he returns to his base and a week later received instructions to prepare to ship out overseas. His destination is Cairo home to the Royal Air Force’s Middle East Command. As he waits to begin his journey he reports that his hometown Swansea was the target of a bad air raid. Jan 17. He receives 7 days leave to return home. He returns from leave on Jan 26 kitted out for the middle east Jan 27. Granted another 13 day leave he returns home again. While home he records another bad air raid bombs very close on Feb 19. He returns to base to complete final preparations and once again receives a pass to go home. While home Swansea again is heavily bombed. He notes that a friend of his was injured in the bombing. On March 20 Walker finally travels to Liverpool where he boards the Viceroy of India bound for Cairo by way of Capetown South Africa. On May 6 he arrives in Port Said Egypt. “PT at 0715 very hot sun with nice cool breeze. Sighted land 11: 30 hr. Approached Freetown Harbour passing glorious palm groves lagoons and gorgeous tropical coast with hills rising sharply to 3000’ covered with trees and small bungalows. Anchored about 1815. Native sampams bumboats came alongside trying to see fruit baskets etc. ” Apr 4. “Watched troops disembark in lighters during this morning after dressing in all equipment…” May 9. For the next several months attached to RAF Middle East Command he carries out a variety of tasks commenting on people he encounters and places he visits. As a Pilot Officer not assigned to an air crew his duties were ground-based. In addition to his daily entries the diary contains a good deal of interesting handwritten memoranda by Walker and printed RAF information. Of interest as well is a silhouette chart of British / Allied and German aircraft for visual identification. For anyone interested in the RAF in the Second World War or the Middle East Command this is a fine record of a junior officer's experience at one of the RASF’s major command centres during WWII. This small diary measures 2.75 inches by 4.75 inches and contains 92 pages plus extensive memoranda. The cover is in good condition with evidence of wear along the edges and at the corners. The binding has been wrapped in a strip of tape to secure it. The pages are in good condition. The handwriting is very tight but fairly legible.; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 92 pages; Signed by Author . paperback‎

‎Margie K Nelson Keller‎

‎1928-1930 Diaries of the Dedicated Mother and Wife of a Shoe Trimmer Making the Most of Life in Pennsylvania During the Great Depression‎

‎Lititz Pennsylvania. Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer are three diaries following three consecutive years in the life of young Pennsylvania wife and mother Margie K. Nelson Keller 1896-1987. Born in Lancaster County Margie married William Grumbine Keller 1894-1962 in 1917. William worked in a shoe factory as a trimmer. Together they had two boys and a girl. Margie lovingly recorded all three of their full names and birthdates in the back of her 1929 diary. Keller spent her entire life in Lancaster county living mostly in Lititz. Keller’s diaries paint a very clear picture of domestic life at that time. Written while she was in her 30s her life is consumed with looking after her husband Bill and her young children. When she begins her diaries her boys Alfred and Arthur are approximately nine and seven when she begins her diaries. In 1929 she gives birth to her daughter Annette. The following excerpts will give a flavour of these lovely diaries: “I started to wash this morning then my wash machine broke. I did not finish til in the afternoon. It was nice so it dried better than I expected. Bill came home early he had something in his eye that hurt too bad” Mar 19 1928. “I worked all morning. The boys did not go along with Bill today they go to bible school every day. It is just in the morning from 8 to 11 o’clock. Mother gave us a chicken yesterday so this evening we killed it. Am having chicken corn pie tomorrow” June 15 1928. “Think of it a baby girl came to our place. Our baby was born about two o’clock Monday morning” Apr 22 1929. “I was busy all day cleaning and baked this morning. I don’t know what I would do without Arthur to help me” July 12 1929. “I did my week’s cleaning upstairs. In the afternoon I mended and made apple jelly. Its very cold a sudden change that’s why we mind it so” Sept 19 1929. “I made my pineapple jam this morning and done some mending and made 2 baby dresses over for the baby. We called on Grampa Keller and at Fredericks this evening” June 11 1930. “They had Rally Day at Sun School this after. We all went I could not stay in the whole time on account of Annette. The church was crowded. They had a special choir. We were home the rest of the day” Oct 19 1930. “I ironed til dinnertime. It rained a little today. I mended this afternoon. This evening I went to the hotel and voted the strait Republican ticket” Nov 4 1930. “Thanksgiving Day. Grandpa Kellers and Grandpa Nelson’s were here for dinner. We had two roasted ducks filling potatoes after vegetables cranberry sauce 2 kinds of pie 2 kinds cake and ice cream” Nov 27 1930. These simple diaries paint a fine picture of the day-to-day life life of a young working class mother in small town Pennsylvania. If times are hard she really doesn’t mention it. Instead what the reader sees is the slow rhythm of life as she looks after her family. She keeps a detailed record of daily and weekly expenses which give a picture of costs to support her family which only offers more insight into how a working-class family in the 20s made a go of it. ABOUT LITITZ PA: Lititz was first settled in 1756 by members of the Moravian Church one of the oldest Protestant denominations in the world. ‎Fanny Maria Hoyt Bean‎

‎1893 1895 Diaries of the Widow of a Prominent Massachusetts Reverend Whose Children Are Grown and Who is Enjoying Her Golden Years in New York‎

‎New York United States. Good with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer are two diaries dating from the late 19th century in New York City. The author of these diaries is Fanny Maria Bean 1837-1919. She was born in 1837 in New York City to Seymour Hoyt and Fanny Stevens. In 1863 Fanny married Reverend David Marks Bean 1832-1884. Together they had four daughters: Annie Susan Elizabeth and Grace. The family lived in Massachusetts where David was a Minister for 16 years in Everett Webster and South Framingham. In 1867 Reverend Bean represented Everett in the Massachusetts legislature and after concluding his ministerial career in 1879 he was Superintendent of Framingham public schools. He then moved with Fanny and his children to Colorado in an attempt to treat his lung illness but he died in 1884. Fanny eventually moved back to New York where she remained until her death. The diaries cover 1893 and 1895. Fanny Bean is not mentioned by name but a number of context clues clearly identify these diaries as having belonged to her. She was 55 and 57 years old when she began her diaries. Fanny was obviously a well-educated woman and her entries though often brief are well written and paint a picture of a busy life Note: There is evidence of a Fanny M. Hoyt attending Rutgers Female Institute from 1850-1853 but we are unable to confirm this is the same person as she would have been too young to be in university. Some excerpts of her diaries give a sense of the flavour: “ S & B to N. Y to see the procession of sailors & ships of navies in Hudson R…” Apr 28 1893. This is a reference to a parade of 37 warships in an international fleet that visited New York City Along with two squadrons of U. S. Navy cruisers and gunboats squadrons of ships from Great Britain Italy Germany Brazil Holland Russia and Spain also participated. The peaceful collection of ships was a minor diplomatic triumph as many of the nations present were fierce rivals. “Susie's wedding day – at 12 o’clock in church – to Lawrence Grey – all went off beautifully – the floral decorations fine both in house and church – about 25 here to celebration – Bridal party left at 1: 32 – almost 3 I went and laid down feeling exhausted” June 27 1893. “56 years old! All my dear children remembered me with loving cards and gifts. I spent much of the time in writing in A. M. And P. M Thus far the Lord hath led me ” Aug 19 1893. “.Distressed to learn one of my S. S Sunday School scholars sentenced to prison for theft” Jan 19 1895. “Very chilly and windy. Making collar for B. B H & I to dinner at Dr. Ryders – Mr. & Mrs. Ridell and mother there too – very nice time- many meals here for the time being” Mar 28 1895. “Lovely and cool. 58! 10 pretty and useful gifts. 2 P. M. Treated myself and all to a ride to Newfield and Springdale – about one hour – lovely” Aug 19 1895. The 1895 diary also contains detailed lists of Fanny’s expenditures which helps the researcher understand her lived experience. These diaries are a terrific look into the life of a widow in New York whose children have grown and who is making her own way in the late 19th century. Both diaries measure 6.0 x 3.5 inches plus memoranda sections. They are both complete and in Good condition. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . paperback‎

‎1927-1929 Diary of an Older American Mother of Six Who is a Devout Christian‎

‎Hartford Connecticut CT. Fair with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer is an interesting diary of a Connecticut woman in the years following World War One. This is a five-year diary that was kept for only two-and-a-half years. Entries begin in January 1927 and continue through to May1929. The author of this diary is unknown. Context suggests that she lived in Connecticut possibly in the Hartford area. However this unnamed woman was very busy. She had a family of 6 children and context again suggests that she is older. One of her daughters is married and has children of her own. There is no reference to a husband in her entries. Several children still live with her. Her life is very busy with the variety of tasks she must complete daily to manage her home. Excerpts follow: “Louise was sick with severe headache in night and today---had indigestion. Came down and slept on lounge. Snowed. Went to Miss Mary meeting. Elsie L. Brought me home in bad storm. He and Mrs. Sye died last night suddenly. Luke 24-5&6” Jan 4 1927. “Tried some puzzles but didn’t feel up enough. Cool. Took nap. Terrible sleepy all of the time. Baked apple pie and potatoes” Mar 24 1927. “Had a lovely bouquet of roses from Elsie and Leighton. Grace wrote lovely card. Elsie got my notices of Board Meeting written. She and Frank went to church. I got dinner. Letter from Esther yesterday. She is away too much. Wrote her a long letter” May 13 1928. “Rained and cooler. Thunderstorm last night. Finished Death Comes to the Archbishop. Finished hemming my napkins. Mr. Case gave me big barrel of gladiolas. Frank and I went to meeting. Voted to build sidewalk and athletic field school house. Letter from Esther…” Aug 6 1928. Throughout her diary she makes references to various biblical texts. For a social historian this diary paints a picture of a very ordinary woman in her later years managing her family and relationships. For a Women’s Studies program this diary clearly illustrates the social situation of many women at that time in America. Measuring 5.75 inches by 3.0 inches the book is about 55% complete. The fabric cover is soiled and shows some wear. The binding has pulled away from the front cover but all pages are intact. The handwriting is cramped. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . paperback‎

‎SERGEI D MITEREFF‎

‎1946 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL JOURNAL AND DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A NOTED RUSSIAN BORN ENGINEER INVENTOR AND PATENT HOLDER PROVIDING INSIGHT INTO AMERICA'S RUSH TO SECURE GERMAN 'INTELLECTUAL PRODUCT' IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WAR‎

‎UNITED STATES - GERMANY. Good. 1946. On offer is a unique significant notebook and diary detailing an original invention by a very successful American inventor and describing his time in post war Germany. This pocket notebook measures 6.75 inches by 3.75 inches. It is comprised of 84 loose-leaf pages and is 90% complete. The covers are missing but the pages are in good condition. The handwriting is small and tight but legible. Sergei D Mitereff was an engineer with Allied Chemical Corporation. He was born in Russia in 1902. He graduated from the Russian Naval Academy and at some point following WWI he emigrated to the United States. He studied at John Hopkins University graduating in 1927 with a degree in Engineering. He passed away in 1971. Allied Chemical Corporation was established in 1920 to counter Germany's dominance of ammonia and industrial dye production. This notebook details one of several patents Mitereff received for industrial processes he invented. This specific patent is U.S. Patent No. 2116881 dealing with the recovery of urea in the ammonia manufacturing process. The notebook is divided into sections and contains drawings tables and descriptions of various processes. Some entries are in German. In July 1947 he travels to Germany on an assignment to obtain formulae and drawings of urea processing from German factories. His comments provide some interesting insights into the post-war months as the United States and other allies sought to take German manufacturing ideas for themselves: "arr at Hotel Carlton about 1:00 PM local time 4th of July. Room across hall from jewel thief Colonel . " July 4 1946. He means Colonel jack W. Durant who with two other officers was involved in stealing Hesse crown jewels valued from $150000 to 3000000 from Kronberg Castle near Frankfurt. He and his wife were kept before trial in a guarded two-room suite in Carlton Hotel. ". went for car - four trips planned and only three avail. All German drivers. What I will do with him in French zone No rations available . paid respects to Colonel Romera . made date with to see Dr. Balz and others tomorrow . Will ask many specific questions. Everything is black market ." July 16 1946. He probably means German chemist Gunther Balz one of the authors of the Balz- Schiemann reaction a pioneering method for preparation of aryl fluorides. "Tried to get urea flow diagram from Bockmeyer but he not available. Then went to see Balz and try to get more info. On pressure he admitted there was such a thing as O2 system. He is an SB of the first water - a Nazi if I ever saw one . " July 19 1946. He notes a number of places he visited and factories he travelled to including IG Farben the huge German chemical manufacturer. He also comments on the living conditions of the local people: ". went to Oberstein. What a place. The people are really hungry there. They also want to buy cigarettes 50 marks - thats $5.00 a pack and we get them for 8 ¢ ." July 21 1946; ". Each of the Drs who was a Nazi must do a certain amount of laboring work ." July 24 1946. He left Germany on September 5th to return to the United States. His notes also contain a detailed listing of expenses incurred on his trip. This notebook is valuable to a historian for the insight it offers into the actions of the allied governments to secure for themselves the high-quality German intellectual 'product' following the war. His notes list many German American and other Allied officers and scientists by name. His expenses provide some insight into daily costs of living. For a chemist his notebook is a detailed discussion of the chemical processes he studied and for which he was eventually awarded a patent.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; UNITED STATES; VIRGINIA; HOPEWELL; POST-WW2 EUROPE; GERMANY FRANKFURT; SERGEI D MITEREFF; ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION ALLIEDSIGNAL; HONEYWELL INTERNATIONAL INC.; I G FARBEN; AMERICAN INVENTORS; RUSSIAN AMERICANS; JOHN HOPKINS ALUMNI; RUSSIAN NAVAL ACADEMY STUDENTS; AMERICAN ENGINEERS; PATENTS; CONTROLLING INSTRUMENTS IN CHEMICAL INDUSTRY; CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES; AMMONIA MANUFACTURING PROCESS; GERMAN CHEMICAL INDUSTRY; POST-WW2 CHEMICAL INDUSTRY; GERMAN FACTORIES IN 1940S; JACK W. ‎Catherine Elizabeth Meier‎

‎1903-1905 Diaries and Ephemera of a Talkative Indiana Quaker Mother of 11 Keeping House and Keeping Busy in the Community‎

‎Indiana United States. Fair with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer are two diaries of a woman describing in great detail life in the mid-west at the end of the 19th century. The author of the diaries is Catherine Elizabeth Meier 1854-1934. She was born near Bucyrus Ohio to parents George and Catharine Keller and raised in Indiana. In 1874 she married John Conrad Meier in Randolph Indiana. John had emigrated from Bavaria Germany in 1870. John C Meier was a baker by trade and after moving from Cincinnati took over the successful grocery business of his father-in-law George G Keller in Winchester. Catherine Meier's father had emigrated from Germany before she was born and Catherine was literate in German. She was a Quaker and an active member in her church community. Winchester had a high percentage of German speakers and Quakers in the local population. Given the Quaker influence Winchester became a very important stop-over on the Underground Railroad – the secretive route that spirited runaway slaves from the southern states to Canada and freedom. As the mother of 11 children Catherine Meier had a very busy household and her diaries reflect this. Somehow she finds time to write daily keeping extremely detailed notes of all that happens to her her family and members of her community. Some excerpts follow: “Am very nervous. Did not sleep well on account of Edwin not coming home. Where could he have spent this cold stormy night My are is better. I cut 2 underwaists for myself then a waist for Clifford got all done but the buttonholes. Minnie did the other work. Alma complains of too much appetite. Had a nice soup for dinner. Willie Tisher was here to dinner. Father had me write a letter to S. C. Cramer and send the money for the periodicals. A letter from Hugo. Pa heard that Edwin was going to St. Louis to join the national guards. I pray God be with him! Father told me Aunt Christine broke her wrist” Feb 16 1903. “Minnie rinsed and hung the white clothes up before going to work. I then washed two lines full and the girls double blanket. Beans and a little salad for dinner. I then rested 15 min then Troy and I went to the farm and planted the lettuce it was 4 1/2 when I got home. Irene and the Sanders girls went to the woods. After supper went to Eastmans & Prices 5 minutes. Then to the store. Mrs McAllister was here to see about her hat. Alma and Minnie did the ironing. Edwin went to Muncie this morning he said to hunt work! When will he be back and when will he settle down and do right Bertha Marlatt married Ira Macy” Apr 29 1903. “I washed dishes until time to dress to go to Union City to the funeral of Geo Lenkensdorfer. At the train I met Mr and Mrs Guthiel Wm. Lenkrensdorfer and three daughters and Mr and Mrs Hirschand Mrs Study & Karl & George. Heard a good German sermon. Came home about 5: 30 PM. Irene had dumplings for dinner. Pa had 5 loaves of bread ready which I baked also baked a cake and three apple and teo custard pies. Bathed the boys early. I was almost too tired to undress for bed. Mary Meier Blizzard had a little son” Aug 29 1903. The pace doesn’t change two years latter as she records her daily life in 1905.“Another year begun who will see the end. Today was warm as spring. At 5 to 9 I started to the farm to get cream. I had not enough to supply. Wineland came to town to his cousin to dinner. I baked 11 pumpkin 2 apple & 2 mince pies. Had potatoes beef & turnips for dinner. I took a nap then read in Tennison which Minnie gave me last night. After supper I started to mothers but met Minnie who said mother was going to bed so I returned & went to church to hear the cantata “Nativity”. The church was full. They received a collection of 40 dollars” Jan 1 1905. “I got up at 5 1/2 wrung the clothes from the boil. Then the others got up. Had fried potatoes for breakfast. It took me till noon to get the washing done. At 11 1/2 it began to rain the clothes were not all dry. Wineland was here to dinner. Has beans and pork. I was too tired to wash dishes. Had little help from the men. I laid on the bed and dozed and rested then took my work and went to Mrs. Hopkins. Grace & Bernard came from school to stay all night. Pa baked 6 loaves of bread a coffee cake and lots of doughnuts. Hugo pulled teeth for Mrs Sallie Smith. Past 10 and still raining. Some water in the cellar” May 11 1905. “I was sore from head to foot from yesterdays work. If only Pa would give me a bit of sympathy. How much easier all would go! .” Nov 28 1905. The 1905 diary has a very thorough cash expense record for January through September giving a very good picture of the costs of many of the daily items needed and used by families at that time. Accompanying these two diaries is a collection of nearly 4 dozen newspaper clippings and ephemera. These also include some invoices for various products she and her husband purchased and a lovely black and white photograph. Although it has no information on it it is not unreasonable to suggest that this is a picture of Catherine Meier. For a social historian this is a simply excellent look at the daily life of a busy mother at the beginning of the 20th century. It is simply stuffed with the details of everyday life. For research in Women’s Studies these two diaries are a superb illustration of the daily life and routine of a very hard-working woman coping with the challenges of raising a large family at that time in a small mid-western community. It would be an excellent addition to any reference collection depicting that time and that place for ordinary women. A genealogist would find the countless references to family friends and neighbours a valuable source of information. Both diaries measure 6.75x3.0 inches. Both contain 365 pages and are 100% complete. Both diaries are in Fair condition with obvious signs of age and loosening of the spines/pages. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall . paperback‎

‎Edward Dudley Tucker‎

‎1911-1915 Diary of an Engaging Pittsburgh High and Carnegie Tech Student Coming-Of-Age before Enlisting in the Great War‎

‎Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is diary filled with the musings of a student age 17 when he begins writing that provides exceptional insight into the experience of a teenage boy in the years before World War One. The diary belonged to Edward Dudley Tucker 1893-1977 who went by Dudley SEE BIO NOTES AT END OF LISTING. Dudley kept the diary regularly from January through August of 1911 while completing his junior year of high school. He returns to his diary for a couple entries in 1912 when he had just completed a summer job at an electrical company and is beginning his studies at Carnegie Tech which would later become a part of Carnegie Mellon University. The diary concludes with a final entry in April of 1915 where Dudley writes of the death and burial of his family’s 17-year-old dog Toby. He also uses a few additional pages to note his expenses while attending Carnegie Tech. Tipped into the diary are two manuscript letters and a printed dance card from Dudley’s high school dance in April 1912. The two letters are from 1911 one being a newsy familiar letter written to Dudley by his friend Hazel and another being a detailed letter written by Dudley to his Aunt Helen where he provides great detail about his studies in senior year and his devoted work on his model airplanes. His diary is written in a ledger book allowing him freedom to write extensive and descriptive entries which he often does. Some entries span pages and provide details of his experiences lists of friends’ names and even drawings. Other entries are just a quick line or two. “I went out to the library to get some material for my debate on the 20th today. I did not know how to act but found out…” Jan 17 1911“I lost my debate to-day but only by a little bit they clapped me but not Beistel. I lost on account of the following. I should only write the headings and write them large and in ink and number them and leave a space of about a line between each…. Be sure to get the material on both sides of the question and get things to knock out his proofs. And greatest of all go slow take plenty of time…and don’t be afraid to pause…” Jan 20 1911. “We initiated Cornell into the club the 500 Club to-nite we did a lot of things to him. We were all dressed up so he wouldn’t know us. We gave him some sweet stuff then some quinine then we put a mustard plaster on his arms then we painted U. S. On his hands with iodine and then tarred and feathered one finger. Then we gave him a dippy note to give the druggist. He gave it to him and the druggist laffed and showed it to a customer. Connell says he’ll make the next initiative strong enough for the next member. I am reading sweet book “The Golden Kingdom” by Andrew Balfour. This is some songs taken out of it…. ” Feb 10 1911. On May 20th he describes a hike in the countryside and accompanies the description with a very detailed map of the immediate area he explored with some friends. “.Hyppo and Eli and I took a walk down in Fern Hollow yesterday. We went down past the gas wells and then climbed up where I found the Indian last Sunday. There Eli got a couple of ferns I had told him about and then we climbed to the top of the hill where there is an orchard an old disused railway and a path…” May 20 1911. “I was down to Tech to see Dean Leete today and had my personal interview. I met a fellow from Texas whose name is McBride. I spent 10 cents for cab fare” March 25 1912. “.I hated to see those little kids doing those stunts on the stage the other night at the Rowland Circus. It seems barbarous to me that we should allow such things when it probably shortens the life of the person greatly. I saw Sue Trotter this afternoon for the first time for about a month. Gee she sure has got some shape. I saw Jennie Mountford this afternoon too. Her hair is sure bleached some. She makes everybody call her “Jean” now. Some loving believe me…” Dec 15 1912. At the back of the book is a list titled “Things I want To Do. From context this list was written after his return from WWI or during a leave. It includes: . “Fix my army stuff to my walls Find a way to take a picture through a telescope Put electric lights in my cabinet.” and more. For a social historian this diary gives a fine look inside the life of an American teenage boy in the years immediately preceding WWI. A genealogist would find the list of school friends very helpful in researching family and community connections. BIO NOTES: Dudley was born in Westboro Massachusetts to parents Frances Augusta Robinson and Curtis Allen Tucker and raised in Edgewood Allegheny Pennsylvania He graduated from Pittsburgh Central High School in 1912 and later graduated from Carnegie Tech. He became a civil engineer and worked in a variety of places including Koppers Company. He served in World War One from November 1915 through June 1919. In 1923 he married Mary Strang in Wilkinsburg PA. Together they had one daughter Mary Jane Tucker. The journal was kept in a ledger book measuring 11.75x7.5 inches. It contains 100 numbered pages plus 6 others inserted into it. It is about 50% complete. The covers are in good condition as are the binding and the pages. The handwriting is legible. ‎Beman Gates (BG) Dawes Jr B G‎

‎1914 Diary of the Eldest Son of the Politically Influential Dawes Family of Ohio Who Would Later Make a Splash in Ohio Business and Culture‎

‎Ohio United States. Fair with no dust jacket. 1914. Softcover. On offer is the college diary of a young man from a very influential Ohio family who would go on to become Chairman of the Dawes Arboretum owner of Eureka Fire and Marine Insurance Company and a Lieutenant Colonel in WWII. The author of the diary is Beman Gates B. G. Dawes Jr. called Gates by his contemporaries 1895-1968. Gates was the eldest son of Beman Sr. And Bertie Dawes. Beman Sr. Was the founding president of the Ohio Cities Gas Company later Pure Oil Company and an Ohio Congressman from 1905-1909. Gates’ uncle Charles G. Dawes was Vice President of the United States under Coolidge 1925-1929. Beman Sr. And Bertie founded the Dawes Arboretum. Gates was himself a prominent figure in Ohio. Born in Lincoln Nebraska Gates graduated from Marietta College where there was once a Dawes Memorial Library named for his family. Gates married Janet Newton in 1919 and they had three daughters. During the First World War he enlisted in 1917 and served with the Army Engineers. He was an Air Force Major during WWII. A devoted Republican Gates was an active member of the Charter Committee in Cincinnati. He spent 20 years on the Board of Trustees at his alma matter including a decade as Chairman of the Board at Marietta College. When his father died in 1953 Gates. Became Chairman of the Board of Directors at his family’s Dawes Arboretum. Gates kept this diary in 1914 when he was 19 years old and attending Marietta College. His entries are detailed and offer a picture of a young man and his life in these early days of 20th century America. His entries focus around school sports and his social life with no references to events outside his own life. The following excerpts will give a sense of his life and times: “Down to school and had a little Math test which I flunked with the greatest ease. Over to gym in afternoon and monkeyed around a little. Tried to pole vault but was exceedingly rotten. Aunt Betty called me over in the evening and I went over there to call on Miss Knight of N. E. Who goes to Oberlin and stayed there for 1 hour & ½ then over to gym to dancing class for a very short time. Too muddy for any baseball practice so got a couple of ads only a few more to get. In evening took E Sweeney to Junior Prom. Not exactly the same kind of affair as last year . Wrights has a good program danced til about 2: 15 and got in bed about 3 AM tired but happy” May 13. “Most other peoples diaries serve as a repository of what they think of other people. Such is twaddle. A fine line of comment on current events may be written without personal observations on the character of the innocent bystander. Remember Rusty Van Punt’s book which he kept under lock and key. With these as notes later when time is offered I can return and make enlargements. This is Vol. 4” July 10. “Chemistry is now becoming a little more intricate and not so easy. Watched football practice and played a little tennis with Syd but didn’t get along well. Took Ethel to movie after a little encounter with Freshmen. Pasted them with flour as they left chapel this morning. Was pretty well done but not as well as expected” Sept 23. Gates has used the back of the dairy as both an address book and to record his monthly expenditures. This diary gives an excellent look into the life of a college student born to a significant family before he makes his mark on his state and country.
