The Magnate: William Boyce Thompson and His Time 1869-1930
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock / John Day. Good. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed and inscribed by author upon front free endpaper. "Thompson was the strangest combination imaginable of go-getter and philosopher grabber and philanthropist realist and dreamer ruthless magnate and tender grandfather. His contribution to history was not primarily a matter of influence in world affairs or of institutions created though his one appearance on the world stage in Russia flashed with insight and originality." - Prologue. "William Boyce Thompson played a crucial role in the Bolshevik Revolution. Indeed if he had not been in Russia in 1917 subsequent history might have followed a quite different course. Without the financial and more important the diplomatic and propaganda assistance given to Trotsky and Lenin by Thompson Robins and their New York Associates the Bolsheviks may well have withered away and Russia evolved into a socialist but constitutional society." - Antony C. Sutton in "Wall Street and the Bolshevik Revolution". A Montana native Thompson made his fortune in copper and served on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1914 to 1919. viii 343 pages. Margaret Shepherd Hutton Kemp
1910-1924 Diaries of the Wife of a Lanman & Kemp Druggist Living an Upper Class Life in NYC As a Manhattan Kemp
Manhattan New York Nyc New York City Europe Abroad England Spain. Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer are two diaries of a highly affluent American woman who was involved in the operations of Lanman & Kemp the high profile Manhattan drug company. The diaries were kept by Margaret Shepherd Hutton Kemp 1863-1944. Margaret married George William Kemp 1860-1912 in 1889. They had one daughter Margaret Peggy 1890-1940. The Kemps were Irish immigrants to New York and quickly became a highly affluent family. They were the Kemps of the Lanman & Kemp drug dynasty which is currently best known for selling Florida Water. CONTACT BUYER FOR FULL BIO NOTES ON THE KEMPS AND OUR DIARIST. WORD LIMITS ON THIS SITE. Importantly our diarist Margaret was involved in the family business running Lanman & Kemp as indicated by legal records in which she is a defendant on behalf of the company. The diaries themselves are both 5-year diaries that cover the years 1910-1914 and 1920-1924. The first was begun when Margaret was 47 years old. She writes almost every single day and her life is luxurious to say the least. For example In April of 1911 she writes daily of her extended trip to Europe visiting places in Spain such as Madrid and the Alhambra Palace France and England with her husband and daughter. She travels by ship to Europe again in the spring of 1913. The rest of the time the focus is on her daily life in NYC. While each entry is only a couple of lines she is very honest with her diary and one comes to know her. Some excerpts: .In afternoon Peggy Bidy and I walked to Bloomingdales and back
I went to late concert Apr 18 1910. "Wednesday Fine out for last time in little car. Went to Dr. Cragins. Peggy went to Biddy at Passaic" June 15 1910.

BASEBALL - THE MATCH BETWEEN THE "RED STOCKINGS" AND THE "ATLANTICS." - SKETCHED by C.S. REINHART: AN ORIGINAL WOOD ENGRAVING from the July 2 1870 issue of HARPER'S WEEKLY.
New York: Harper's Weekly 1870. 1870. Good. - An original 6-1/2 inch high by 20-1/4 inch wide wood engraving portraying the historic baseball game in which the Brooklyn Atlantics finally broke the Cincinnati Red Stocking's more than 80 game winning streak. The engraving drawn by C.S. Reinhart depicts a runner on first as the pitcher winds up to throw. An umpire attired in a top hat looms behind the catcher as players watch from the bench in the foreground. Brooklyn's skyline is seen behind the crowd in the background. The image is engraved on newsprint along the top of the double-page centerfold sheet pages 424 & 425 of Harper's Weekly above a 6-1/2 inch high by 20-1/4 inch wide wood engraving of a horse race titled "Jerome Park - The Race for the Hunter's Plate. - Sketched by Stanley Fox". Both images are engraved on a 16-1/2 inch high by 23 inch wide sheet with text printed on the verso. Folded twice with a few tiny holes along the vertical center fold. There is some spotting staining and speckling to the edges with a large brown dampstain at left touching on the horse racing image. Good. <p>Cincinnati's Red Stockings had held the all-time best perfect season record through 1869 winning all of their 67 games that year. Their record remained undefeated through the first part of the 1870 season until the memorable game against Brooklyn's Atlantic team on June 14 1870 at the Capitoline Grounds in Brooklyn. Though Atlantic had already lost a game to the Red Stockings they defeated Exford to regain the pennant in 1869 claiming the championship under the rules at the time which more closely resembled those of boxing. An estimated crowd of 15000 witnessed Atlantic's 8-7 victory over the Red Stockings in eleven innings. New York: Harper's Weekly, 1870. unknown
