Kansas City MO: Brotherhood Railway Carmen of America United States and Canada 1929-1950. First Edition First Printing. Stapled Wraps. 4to. uniformly measuring 5.5" x 8.25". Illustrated stapled card covers. A very scarce labour journal which appears to have commenced publication in 1900 for the benefit of their working-class members until the dissolution of the organization in 1986. All issues replete with a variety of photographs illustrations and many advertisements. The contents of the magazines were not limited merely to discussion of American labour affairs but deliberate in great detail on the political and labour affairs of their Canadian counterparts to the North; with a particular emphasis on the Prairie provinces notably Alberta Saskatchewan Manitoba and Ontario. Subject matters ranged from inter-fraternal announcements profiles political deliberations and even to religious discussions etc. Our substantial though incomplete offering provides unique insight into the state of labour relations both in the United States and Canada during crucial periods including on the eve of the Great Depression through to the Second World War and its aftermath. The issues are excellent source material detailing the disruption and upheaval experienced by working men and women both in the United States and Canada from their distinct point of view. With the exception of two issues which have some chipping tears some loss strictly confined to the front covers all the other issues are remarkably preserved and in excellent condition. Most if not all issues bear a small subscription sticker affixed to the front covers with the name and address of the subscriber; contents remain overwhelmingly bright clean and unmarked with tight sound bindings. Overall very good. Not found in Peel BAC/LAC the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections or Dalhousie University Labour Studies Collection. Rare to be offered as a set and in this condition. Originally conceived of by two brothers William H. Ronemus and Frank L. Ronemus The Brotherhood of Railway Car Repairers of North America as it was originally known was established in Cedar Rapids Iowa on the evening of October 27 1888 with a total of seven members. Following a joint convention held in Topeka Kansas on September 9 1890 they merged with the Carmen's Mutual Aid Association a similar organization based out of Minneapolis Minnesota and which was established by Sylvester Keliher. Following this amalgamation the 'Brotherhood Railway Carmen of America" came into being. The Brotherhood's stated objectives were: "to advance the moral material and industrial well-being of its members" and "to secure for our members a just remuneration in exchange for their labor. to shorten the hours of labor as economic development and progress will warrant eight hours per day is the workday desired and 44 hours per week in order that our members may have more opportunities for intellectual development social enjoyment and industrial education." Estelle May Steward Handbook of American Trade-Unions: 1936 edition. Washington DC: US Government Printing Office 1936. The organization also established a Ladies' Auxiliary To Brotherhood Railway Carmen of America maintaining its own executive board and "grand lodge".
