Una tappa necessaria alla ricomposizione di un campo di indagine sinora inesplorato. A cent'anni dalla "questione cafaggiolana" che aveva opposto studiosi faentini e toscani largamente superata col progresso degli studi e delle conoscenze in merito un'esperta faentina celebra in questo volume il "figurato" di Montelupo aspetto della maiolica toscana nel quale proprio alcuni faentini cinquecento anni fa ebbero parte attiva. L'ampiezza della documentazione raccolta ha indotto a suddividere l'opera in due parti: una di carattere saggistico a inquadramento dell'argomento; l'altra di catalogo con un'analisi di maioliche "figurate canoniche". La prima parte si apre con un saggio di Fausto Berti che ci aggiorna sullo stato delle conoscenze sulla maiolica "figurata" presente nelle raccolte del Museo di Montelupo acquisita soprattutto a seguito dei fruttuosi recuperi da lui condotti in prima persona e col proprio gruppo archeologico. In un secondo saggio l'autrice affronta degli aspetti storiografici considerando i frutti che si possono trarre da un'attenta lettura degli scritti del passato. Un terzo saggio delinea il percorso artistico che porta i maestri montelupini dal "ritratto" rinascimentale al "figurato canonico" a piena superficie passando attraverso il "primo figurato" il "raffaellismo" e il manierismo maturo. Sono per ora poche personalit� - tutte anonime alcune di cultura faentina - alle quali il Berti ha assegnato nomi di comodo: "Pittore del tridente" "Pittore di Muzio Scevola" "Istoriatore della Bibbia" e "Pittore di Cesare". In un quarto saggio si esaminano i caratteri del "figurato tardo" quello cio� degli "arlecchini". Lo studioso di storia dei costumi Gianluca Senzani esplora infine il tema del "figurato tardo" come documento di costume. La seconda parte del libro esamina in un catalogo a schede un corpus di venticinque opere pressoch� inedite. La sorprendente quantit� di materiale vagliato e l'enorme numero di opere rintracciate in cataloghi di musei di raccolte private e cataloghi di vendita ha spinto l'autrice a porre questa messe a disposizione degli studiosi per futuri ampliamenti e affinamenti sotto forma di Repertorio organizzato sia per tematiche alfieri alabardieri figure della Commedia dell'Arte ecc. sia per gruppi o unit� stilistiche in sequenza cronologica.
