NOISBN . solid book with not much actual wear BUT: a its one-time owner went absolutely bonkers with his ownership rubber-stamp using it on all endpapers the bottom edge and a couple of other places; and b the dust jacket heavily worn is firmly glued down at the flaps. Early mystery novel by Fisher as he was still clawing his way up out of the pulps his breakthrough novel "I Wake Up Screaming" was just two years in the future about a washed-up actress whose life "had become dull barren and incredibly stupid and who had become obsessed with the idea of death. So she decided to commit a murder!" Great opening line: "If Mrs. Rhea Davis had not been sleepless and miserable it is entirely possible that the idea of committing a murder would never have occurred to her." 1939 was also the year Fisher moved to Paris although he soon returned after a couple of his stories were sold to the movies; he went on to a lucrative career or so as a screenwriter while continuing to crank out novels on occasion often with a Hollywood or showbiz background. . Hardcover. no dust jacket worn but intact copy apparently ex-rental library but with un-obnoxious traces inked call number and label remnant on rear pastedown faint stamping on top and bottom edges; text from front jacket flap is affixed to front pastedown. Early novel by this former pulpster the first of two to feature Sheridan Doome "ace of the Naval Intelligence" who is notable I guess for having been badly disfigured in the explosion of a ship during the first World War requiring the permanent placement of "huge steel plates over his entire chest and back." As the narrator describes him: "His face was just one ugly scar. For eyes he had only black blotches crazy shaped; his ears were tiny pieces of things that hugged his bony white head. His mouth was without lips. . His nose was a grotesque stump. If you think that Frankenstein looked horrible on the screen you cannot imagine Doome." There's more -- but of course he also had "a brain so cunning so astute that there was not a man in the service who could match it" not to mention a "warm sympathetic heart." . INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. This hard-boiled veteran writer returns yet again to the Hollywood Novel a genre he mined repeatedly often striking a rich vein of cliche throughout his long career. No one can say he didn't know the territory: in addition to more than a dozen novels under both his own name and early on as "Stephen Gould" he also had numerous screenwriting credits from the 1940s through the 1970s. A fine view of the Eagle's Nest now in Killarney National Park County Kerry Ireland.<br/> <br/>Fisher was born in Dublin and 'Having a taste for art he studied it by himself and eventually succeeded in obtaining the patronage of the nobility. He produced some landscapes which were clever attempts to reproduce nature. and were very well suited for engraving and a set of views of Carlingford Harbour and its neighbourhood were finely engraved by Thomas Vivares James Mason and other eminent landscape engravers of the day. In 1789 Fisher published a folio volume called A Picturesque Tour of Killarney consisting of 20 views engraved in aquatinta with a map some general observations &c.
