Aarau Switzerland: Aargauische Buchdruckerfachschule 1969. Very Good. Edition of 1500 Quarto decorated boards 24 pp 7 full page color woodcuts by Hoffmann. Very good in lightly used paper-covered slipcase. With six inscribed cards various dimensions all with illustrations to his US editor Margaret McElderry two unsigned ones as well all with pinholes attesting to McElderry's putting them up. McElderry a legendary editor of children's books who was given her own imprint solicited Hoffmann to illustrate many books and Hoffmann was clearly one of her favorite illustrators. Handsomely rebound in half morocco with five raised bands gilt titling and marbled boards. Matching marbled endpapers. A previous owner's ex libris plate on the front free end-paper of each volume. Top edges gilt. Some foxing to the edges and early and late pages. No inscriptions. Vol. I has the Frontispiece with tissue guard and five illustrations. Vol. II has Five illustrations. Hoffmann was a late 18th/early 19th century Prussian author of fantasy and Gothic horror stories. He is one of the best-known representatives of German Romanticism and a pioneer of the fantasy genre with a taste for the macabre combined with realism that influenced such authors as Edgar Allan Poe Nikolai Gogol Charles Dickens Charles Baudelaire George MacDonald Fyodor Dostoevsky Franz Kafka and Alfred Hitchcock. Hoffmann's story 'Das Fräulein von Scuderi' is sometimes cited as the first detective story and a direct influence on Poe's 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue'.
