FIRST EDITION WITH THESE ILLUSTRATIONS circa 1920 180 x 150 mm 7¼ x 6 inches white boards with green frame Struwwelpeter with sad face and drooping hair in red tunic green stockings and spotted neckerchief coloured vignette of Blackamoor on lower cover 24 pages. New coloured illustrations unattributed adapted from the originals printed on coated paper. Peter has a girlish face and a mass of blond hair dark blue neckerchief and stockings. Rebacked neatly with green binder's tape new endpapers restitched first and last page mounted on linen tab. Corners and board edges slightly worn boards lightly soiled and very slightly bowed small old sellotape mark on boards next to top of spine few slight biro marks on lower board occasional slight mark to margins 1 or 2 very light small creases to contents tiny closed margin tear neatly repaired and tiny hole to inner margin of No.9. Acceptable copy of uncommon version which is toned down: Cruel Frederick is quite bland waving his chair his tongue barely protrudes as he tears off the fly's wings; the doctor has a pleasant face and a normal nose Suck-a-Thumb's toes are not turned in. A larger edition with these illustrations was published by Humphrey Milford/Oxford circa 1925 but with a more usual picture of Struwwelpeter on the cover.
