In the work which describes his youth and analyzes his literary development Sartre distances himself from writing and bids his adieu to literature.The major part of the work was written in 1954 and was rewritten and altered in early 1963 which accounts for the many chronological contradictions the point of reference being sometimes 1953 sometimes 1963.The second printing of the work is that from Gallimard 1964 which is usually described as the first edition of the work but which is in fact merely the first edition in book form. This first printing from 1963 constitutes the work in its entirety and the 1964-version only differs very slightly from it. On 28th of November 1963 an extract of the work appeared in "L'Express". A beautiful near mint copy. <br/><br/><em>The seminal first edition presentation-copy for Claude Gallimard one of 15 large paper copies of Sartre's groundbreaking play "The Flies" which constitutes his very first play as well as the only one he himself characterized as a "drama". The first edition appeared in 15 copies on pur fil and 525 regular copies. The 15 copies on pur fil are not numbered presumably because the issue was so small and there were no other copies on fine paper made but the back wrapper states "EXEMPLAIRE SUR PUR FIL/ 60 francs". "Gallimard 1943. 145 pages. 15 exemplaires pur fil et 525 exemplaires reliés Héliona dont l'achevé d'imprimer est de décembre 1942. Volume mis en vente en avril 1943." Contat & Rybalka p. 88.The magnificent presentation-inscription which reads as thus: "A Claude Gallimard/ en hommage amical de/ JPSartre" "Gallimard" is vague as someone presumably Gallimard himself or his family when selling the copy has tried to erase it as is often done with identifiable names when trying to hide the provenance but it is still fully legible is for Sartre's publisher Claude Gallimard 1914-1991 the son of Gaston Gallimard. Claude Gallimard worked in the family publishing company since 1937."The Flies" counts as Sartre's most important play as well as one of his most important works. It is a dramatical exposition of his central philosophical themes and a main exponent for his existentialism. As such it is also one of the most important plays of the 20th century. It is in 1943 with "The Flies" and with "l'Étre et le Néant" same year that Sartre's ideas become fully developed and of the two "The Flies" had by far the greatest impact on contemporary thought philosophy and literature. The work thus constitutes one of the most important and influential works of the period. Following its premiere June 3rd 1943 in the "Théatre de la Cité" in Paris the play was censored by the German military administration. 'Modern Times' was a French journal founded by Simone de Beauvoir Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Its first issue was published in October 1945. It was named after the 1936 film by Charlie Chaplin. Les Temps Modernes filled the void left by the disappearance of the most important pre-war literary magazine La Nouvelle Revue Française The New French Review considered to be André Gide's magazine which was shut down by the authorities after the liberation of France because of its collaboration with the occupation. Les Temps Modernes was first published by Gallimard and was last published by Gallimard. In between the magazine changed hands three times: Julliard January 1949 to September 1965 Presses d'aujourd'hui October 1964 to March 1985 Gallimard from April 1985. Les Temps Modernes ceased publication in 2019 after 74 years. The first editorial board consisted of Sartre director Raymond Aron Simone de Beauvoir Michel Leiris Maurice Merleau-Ponty Albert Ollivier and Jean Paulhan. All published many articles for the magazine. Sartre's contributions included "La nationalisation de la littérature" "The Nationalisation of Literature" "Matérialisme et révolution" "Materialism and Revolution" and "Qu'est-ce-que la littérature" "What is Literature". Simone de Beauvoir first published Le Deuxième Sexe "The Second Sex" in Les Temps Modernes. In the preface to the first edition Sartre stated the review's purpose: to publish littérature engagée. This philosophy of literature expresses a basic creed of existentialismthat an individual is responsible for making conscious decisions to commit socially useful acts. Thus literature in the magazine would have a utilitarian component; it would not be just culturally valuable "art for art's sake". Other intellectuals such as André Gide André Breton and Louis Aragon disapproved of this orientation. Sartre's response: "Le monde peut fort bien se passer de la littérature. Mais il peut se passer de l'homme encore mieux." "The world can easily get along without literature. But it can get along even more easily without man." The works of many writers appeared in Les Temps Modernes. They include Richard Wright Jean Genet Nathalie Sarraute Boris Vian and Samuel Beckett. Political divisions between board members soon surfaced. Raymond Aron quit in 1945 because of the magazine's Communist sympathies becoming an editor at Le Figaro. At the time of the Korean War of 19501953 Merleau-Ponty resigned. Originally more supportive of Communism than Sartre he moved progressively to the right as Sartre moved to the left. At the time Sartre still endorsed Communism in his writings but in private expressed his reservations. Sartre disapproved of Camus for seeing both sides in the Algerians' rebellion against their French colonial masters The Algerian War195462. In his bitterness against Camus Sartre selected Francis Jeanson who did not like the works of Camus to review the Camus essay L'Homme Révolté The Rebel. When Camus responded to the review with hurt feelings Sartre put the final blow to a friendship that had lasted for years. He said "Vous êtes devenu la proie d'une morne démesure qui masque vos difficultés intérieures. . Tôt ou tard quelqu'un vous l'eût dit autant que ce soit moi." "You have become the victim of an excessive sullenness that masks your internal problems. . Sooner or later someone would have told you so it might as well be me." Les Temps Modernes enjoyed its greatest influence in the 1960s. At this time it had more than 20000 subscribers. During the Algerian War 19541962 it strongly supported the National Liberation Front the primary group in the ultimately successful battle against the French. It fiercely denounced the extensive use of torture by French forces opposed Charles de Gaulle's government and supported desertion and resistance to conscription. The journal printed testimonies by French soldiers denouncing the war and torture from 1958 to 1962. For this it was censured and its premises seized. From its inception the review has published many special issues. These include Sartre's 1946 description of the United States an attempt to discredit the myths that many of the French held about this country. In 1955 Claude Lanzmann described Sartre's Marxist philosophy in an issue called "La Gauche" "The Left". An issue on "La révolte hongroise" "The Hungarian Rebellion" 195657 denounced Soviet repression. In 1967 at the time of the Six-Day War an issue "Le conflit israélo-arabe" "The Israeli-Arab conflict" contained articles by both Israelis and Arabs. Paris: Librairie Felix Alcan 1936. First edition of Sartre's first book published as volume 10 of the Nouvelle Encyclopedie Philosophique and commissioned by the editor Henri Delacroix. Octavo original wrappers. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page "A Brice Parain en tout amitie! JP Sartre." The recipient Brice Parain was a fellow French philosopher and friend of Sartre's mainly interested in Communism Surrealism and Existentialism the failures of which he anticipated in part in some of his earlier works such as Essai sur la misère humaine 1934 and Retour à la France 1936. Parain was one of the chief collaborators in the beginnings of Éditions Gallimard since 1927 as well as a close friend of the Gallimard brothers particularly Gaston. He was the principal director of the Encyclopédie de la Pléiade collection and translated various Russian classic works published through Gallimard including works by Lev Tolstoy Anton Chekhov and Aleksandr Pushkin. Near fine in the original glassine which is in near fine condition with a small annotation "Envoi" to the crown of the spine. First editions are rare presentation copies exceedingly so. Understanding the imagination was central to Sartre’s attempts to understand what it was to be human and how one should live. In L'Imagination Sartre discusses what the existence of imagination shows about the nature of human consciousness and argues that while some believe imagining to be like an internal perception it is in fact nothing like it. Ultimately Sartre argues that because we can imagine we are ontologically free. A consciousness that could not imagine he points out would be hopelessly mired in the "real" incapable of the perception of unrealized possibilities and thus any real freedom of thought or choice. In order to imagine a consciousness must be able to posit an object as irreal—nonexistent absent somewhere else and it does so always from a particular point of view. Librairie Felix Alcan unknown
