Genet, Jean Translated by Bernard Frechtman Jean-Paul Sartre [Peter Matthiessen]
Our Lady of the Flowers.
New York: Grove Press Inc. 1963. First American edition of Genet's debut novel. Octavo original cloth. From the library of Peter Matthiessen with his bookplate to the front free endpaper. Peter Matthiessen remains the only writer to have won the National Book Award in both nonfiction The Snow Leopard 1979 and fiction Shadow Country 2008. A leading figure in fiction and non-fiction for six decades he co-founded the famed Paris Review in 1953. A prominent environmental Matthiessen received the National Book Award for Fiction in 2008 at the age of 81 for Shadow Country. “No one writes more lyrically than Matthiessen about animals or describes more movingly the spiritual experience of mountaintops savannas and the sea†Michael Dirda. Near fine in a good dust jacket. Jacket design by Roy Kuhlman. Genet's debut novel Our Lady of the Flowers Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs was first published in 1943. A largely autobiographical account of a man's journey through the Parisian underworld Genet wrote the novel in prison on sheets of brown paper which prison authorities provided to prisoners – with the intention that they would make bags of it. As recounted by Sartre in his foreword to Our Lady of the Flowers a prison guard discovered that the prisoner Genet had been making this "unauthorized" use of the paper confiscated the manuscript and burned it. Undaunted Genet wrote it all over again. The second version survived and Genet took it with him when leaving the prison. "In Our Lady of the Flowers Genet has taken a tabooed subject and created a world that is our of this world. He is a magician an enchanter of the first order" Richard Wright. Genet, Jean (Author); Finch, Steven (Translator); Sullivan, Bill (Artist) & Sartre, Jean-Paul
TREASURES OF THE NIGHT: THE COLLECTED POEMS OF JEAN GENET: THE LIMITED EDITION
San Francisco CA: Gay Sunshine Press 1981. First Edition. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket As Issued. San Francisco CA: Gay Sunshine Press 1981. Hardcover. Fine/None As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 120 pages. Retrospective collection of the author's poetry. One of the most beautiful books on the poetic art and achievement of Jean Genet ever published in the 20th century. Limited Edition of 100 numbered copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition which is a paperback original only. Published as a hardcover original only. There is NO equivalent volume in French. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Bill Sullivan: Regular-sized volume format. Gold cloth boards with red titles embossed on the cover and spine as issued. Poems by Jean Genet. They are presented on the left-hand side with the English translations by Steven Finch en face. Original art by Bill Sullivan. Printed on thick archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The production values are outstanding in every respect. Without DJ as issued. Presents in its Limited Edition format "Treasures of The Night: The Collected Poems of Jean Genet". A labor of love that celebrates erotic desire and love its pathos its pain and its compensatory pleasures. Gathers six sequences published individually by Genet: "The Man Sentenced To Death" "Funeral March" "The Galley" "The Parade" "A Song of Love" and "The Fisherman of The Suquet". The last two sequences are both tenderly dedicated to Genet's heterosexual and "very much married with children" lover Lucien Senemaud an unbearably handsome Frenchman who appears - "acts" would be an exaggeration and would have been superfluous - in Genet's feverish and only film "Un Chant d'Amour" 1946 banned in France and released only recently in various DVD editions. Rainer Werner Fassbinder paid homage to the iconic Lucien Senemaud by casting Brad Davis his lookalike more or less as "Querelle". The title itself comes from the final sequence "The Fisherman of The Suquet". Genet's greatest champion has given his blessing to this lovely book and is gratefully quoted by Steven Finch in his Preface: "I have said that true poetry is untranslatable. But note how close these lines are to his prose. They must be translated since they ask to be understood" Jean-Paul Sartre. "Ask to be understood" is surely THE fundamental reason for the indispensable art of translation whether of prose or poetry. An absolute "must-have" title for Jean Genet collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 100 numbered copies indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. This title is a great collection. As far as we know this is the only copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. Please note: ALL other copies available online have serious flaws and are the regular trade paperback edition. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A very rare copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. SEE ALSO OTHER JEAN GENET TITLES IN OUR CATALOG. ISBN 0917342755. Gay Sunshine Press hardcover
