[Sartre, Jean-Paul]
Tout! ce que nous voulons: tout! Nos. 1 1970 through 17 1971 all published.
<p>Seventeen numbers in 16 issues comprising a complete run. Additional supplement to no. 14. Text in French. Printed multiple colors illustrated throughout. Folio. Very good. folded broadsheet format. 1875</p><p><em>Militant-leftist post-'68 underground French newspaper most notable for having Jean-Paul Sartre on the masthead as "Director of Publication." A note from Sartre in issue 1 explains: "I agreed to direct 'ce que nous voulons: TOUT' just as I agreed last April to direct 'La Cause du Peuple' of which I am still director. These two newspapers do not agree on many points and I personally do not necessarily agree with everything that can be read in them. That is not the question: the infamous and ridiculous lawsuits that the government levels through a court of exception against the vendors of 'La Cause du Peuple' show that the ruling class intends to quickly suppress any revolutionary press. To better strike those who challenge it the bourgeoisie does not hesitate to violate its own laws; there is therefore an urgent political struggle to be waged at this level. Since I have not been indicted in the trials now taking place I make myself available to any revolutionary newspaper in order to force the bourgeois class to make a political trial of me the object of which will clearly this time be the freedom of the press or to unmask by their not indicting me the illegality of the repression." Other notable features of the publication include frequent solidarity with global antiracist and freedom struggles including with the Black Panthers and Young Lords in the US as well as Palestinians; and its overall hippie-counterculture aesthetic exemplified in one case by a front-page illustration by R. Crumb. Overall a visually and politically compelling periodical of its time elevated by Sartre's involvement and very scarce as a complete run.</em></p> Tout

Abel, Lionel (Author); Nabokov, Vladimir; Sartre, Jean-Paul; Trilling, Lionel & Other Subjects
IMPORTANT NONSENSE
New York City NY: Prometheus Books 1987. First Edition. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket. New York City NY: Prometheus Books 1987. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 232 pages. Landmark collection of philosophical and critical essays. The companion volume to his "Intellectual Follies" memoir-essay book. One of the best books of its very rare kind ever written in the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by Prometheus a small independent press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Lionel Abel's "Important Nonsense". Simply indispensable essays. Lionel Abel was a cosmopolitan New York-based writer/playwright/critic of ideas who helped shape and define many of the urgent debates that flourished during the Golden Age of American intellectual culture. Despite widespread anti-intellectualism there was a very brief period when the intellectual was nonetheless considered a valuable member of American society. This valuation of course has been dead for a long time killed off in our mass- and social media age of the talking head the pundit the "expert" and most pernicious of all the "influencer". Much of what Abel has to say in these pieces is often provocative but always intelligent illuminating original - and necessary. The eponymous Essay addresses one of the most meretricious - yet seldom called out - aspects of both high and popular culture: That there are ideas and personalities behind them which gain currency and pervasive influence - hence "important" impossible to ignore - yet upon closer inspection are full of it sheer "nonsense". Developed more fully by Lionel Abel in his great essay "Important Nonsense" was first articulated by Bertrand Russell about "bad philosophers" like Derrida and Foucault whose core ideas in the great Russell's acute estimation are utter nonsense. Just because someone is famous and academically studied to death does NOT mean that what they have to say and what they represent make sense in any meaningful way. They do not. "The most intelligent man in America" Jean-Paul Sartre. An absolute "must-have" title for Lionel Abel collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws are subsequent printings or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest intellectual/writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. SEE ALSO OTHER LIONEL ABEL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG. ISBN 0879753544. Prometheus Books hardcover

THE INTELLECTUAL FOLLIES: A MEMOIR OF THE LITERARY VENTURE IN NEW YORK AND PARIS
New York City NY: W. W. Norton & Company 1984. First Edition. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket. New York City NY: W. W. Norton & Company 1984. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 304 pages. The author's landmark memoir. The memoir as a sequence of literary and critical essays. One of the most important intellectual memoirs of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Lionel Abel's "The Intellectual Follies: A Memoir of The Literary Venture In New York And Paris". Riveting recollections of and acute commentary about such diverse figures as Nicola Chiaromonte Jean Genet Mary McCarthy Jean-Paul Sartre Susan Sontag and most controversial of all Hannah Arendt whom Lionel Abel skewers rather mercilessly as only an aggrieved fellow Jewish-American could. Their famous tangle was about Arendt's infamous contentions in her account "Eichmann In Jerusalem" 1963 about "the banality of evil" to describe genocidal murderer Adolf Eichmann during his "show trial" her mocking words and much more painfully about alleged Jewish complicity in and guilt for the Holocaust. According to Arendt the few wealthy and well-connected Jewish leaders helped to systematically round up and offer up impoverished and defenseless fellow Jews in order to gain favor with Hitler and to spare themselves. After performing such invaluable service most of them were killed by the Nazis anyway. Both allegations by Arendt together with her pivotal - and contrary - assertion that the true significance of the Holocaust is Jewish shame that such a thing could ever happen will probably be debated for centuries to come. Rightly or wrongly there is heartbreaking "proof" if that is the word of Arendt's cruel thesis: Many Jews who either successfully fought back at first or survived the camps or somehow managed to escape unscathed eventually committed suicide - which Arendt ascribes to Jewish shame. On the other hand Walter Benjamin the greatest philosopher-critic of the 20th century and Arendt's close friend killed himself in order to save fellow Jewish refugees. Meanwhile Arendt herself - first of all she regarded the actions of the state of Israel itself as illegal - was subsequently ostracized by the New York and European intellectual elite her hard-earned reputation in absolute tatters she died shortly afterwards. Intellectual folly indeed. Lionel Abel fair-minded as always despite their bitter falling out nevertheless regards Arendt's OTHER achievements as courageous and monumental. "The most intelligent man in America" Jean-Paul Sartre. An absolute "must-have" title for Lionel Abel collectors. This title is a great book. ALAUX, Jean-Paul & Gustave
L'Histoire Merveilleuse de Christophe Colomb.
Paris: Editions d'art Devambez 1924. An exuberantly illustrated life of Columbus First edition number 30 of 20 copies numbered 11-30 printed on Japon paper with an original signed pen and ink drawing by Gustave Alaux and an additional suite of his wood engravings printed on fine paper. A handsome book strikingly illustrated issued by the celebrated printer-publisher Devambez; the total edition numbered 950 copies. The illustrator Gustave Alaux 1887-1965 came from a family of painters. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a pupil of Maurice Baschet and in 1914 entered the class of Henri Royer at the Académie Julian. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français and in 1920 won the silver medal for his painting Christophe Colomb arrivant en vue du Nouveau Monde and took the gold medal in 1927. In 1926 he joined Le Sabord "The Porthole" a learned society created by Charles Fouqueray. He was later an active member of the Salon de la Marine. For the present work he collaborated with his cousin Jean-Paul Alaux himself an architect and accomplished watercolourist; Gustave's illustrations are sophisticated and dynamic clearly influenced by the vigour of an older woodcut tradition and compliment perfectly this romanticized biography. The original pen and ink sketch included here shows Columbus's three ships the Nina Pinta and Santa Maria approaching the coast of Hispaniola. Provenance: attractive engraved bookplate of Merillon showing two coats of arms flanking a palm tree; this is presumably the French lawyer of the same name who in the 1920s started an agricultural company in south Tunisia which "introduced new technologies of cultivating date palms in the oasis of Jemna made local farmers work in their own land and started exporting dates to Europe" Mejdi p. 27. Quarto 267 x 191 mm. Numerous wood-engraved plates head- and tailpieces and historiated initials by Gustave Alaux vignette title page printed in red and black 3 folding maps. Contemporary red half crushed morocco spine with raised bands and gilt lettering marbled sides and endpapers top edge gilt original silk marker. Original wrappers including spine bound in. Unobtrusive embossed stamp of Neatham Mill Library to rear endpaper. Light rubbing to joints and corners. A very good copy. Ihsan Mejdi "'The Oasis is ours': What did the 2011 Tunisian Revolution mean at the Margins Dates Land and the State in Jemna" MA thesis 2019. hardcover
