SARTRE Jean-Paul 1905-1980

Autograph preparatory manuscript for Les Mots
N.p.n.d c. 1953-1955 1 p. in-4°
Some words crossed out by Sartre

Precious unpublished preparatory manuscript for Les Mots one of the densest that can be found of Sartre's autobiographical masterpiece

Sartre began drafting a preparatory manuscript for Les Mots initially titled Les Affections du cœur between 1952 and 1953. Deeply involved at the time in his philosophical work—particularly Critique of Dialectical Reason—he temporarily abandoned his autobiographical project before resuming it in the late 1950s. The book published by Gallimard in 1963 was met with great success.
Several preparatory and fragmentary texts are known ranging from one to about ten pages for the longest now housed at the BnF Bibliothèque nationale de France. These fragments are published in the Pléiade edition under the section "Vers Les Mots" "Towards Les Mots".
Unknown to Jean-François Louette the present manuscript remains one of the most valuable that can be found from the philosopher so rich is it in thematic density and so revealing of the existential concerns that permeate Sartre's work. It also stands out by having both a 'beginning' and an 'end' unlike other isolated fragments.

"Bovarysm":
It is worth noting that this term does not appear in the final version of Les Mots. Sartre as is well known had a deep interest in Madame Bovary having read Flaubert's work numerous times. For the young Sartre Madame Bovary embodied a life project—somewhere between a challenge to the adult world and a form of childish play see Sartre et la tentation Bovary – F. Noudelmann.

Does not appear in "Vers Les Mots" Les Mots Pléiade edition edited by Jean-François Louette 2010.
