NARBUT, Heorhiy (artist); ANDERSEN, Hans Christian
Prygun The Jumpers.
Moscow Knebel' 1913. . First edition; large 4to 30 x 23 cm 12 pp. illustrated throughout by Narbut; original printed thick wrappers small stain to edge of cover owner's initials in ink to top left of cover a fine copy.
Russian translation of Hans Christian Andersen's tale Springfyrene The Jumpers wonderfully illustrated by one of Ukraine's greatest artists Heorhiy Narbut. Prygun was published by Joseph Knebel one of the most important figures in the history of Russian picture books. He prioritised illustration over text and was the first to specialise in children's book design. It was his belief that 'the child will quickly forget the content. But the illustration- its range of colours its design - might forever leave a trace on the child's soul'. Prygun is from the 'gift series' which featured folk tales from around the world. Benois said that each time a new book in the series was published it was as much of an event as a new art exhibit.
Moscow, Knebel', [1913]. unknown

The Evergreen Tales 3 Vols in Slipcase: King Midas / Pandora’s Box / The Emperor’s New Clothes - Limited Editions Club 1951-1952 Signed by Fritz Eichenberg Rafaello Busoni Ervine Metzl and Jean Hersholt Copy 508 of 2000
The Limited Editions Club 1952. hardcover. Very Good. 0x0x0. 1951-1952 Limited Editions Club New York three 8 x 12 1/8 inches tall cloth hardcover volumes in the publisher's original red paper-covered slipcase with a printed paper title label to the spine decorations to front covers lettering to spines all beautifully illustrated in color each hand-signed by the illustrator on the limitations page. This matched set is copy number 508 of a limited edition of 2000 copies. The individual volumes included in this lot are: The Tale of King Midas 47 pp. signed by Fritz Eichenberg; Pandora's Box 42 pp. signed by Rafaello Busoni; and The Emperor's New Clothes 35 pp. dual-signed by illustrator Ervine Metzl and translator/series editor Jean Hersholt. A near fine set—clean bright and unmarked with only the slightest bit of trivial rubbing and minor edgewear to the cloth covers — housed in a structurally sound slightly soiled and very slightly edgeworn original slipcase. Note that this is a heavy and oversized set so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~B~ 4.0P Conceived and executed under the visionary direction of George Macy The Evergreen Tales or Tales for the Ageless stands as a benchmark mid-century effort to marry classic folklore and mythology with the apex of twentieth-century book arts and graphic illustration. This particular three-volume grouping highlights iconic narratives reimagined through distinctly varied artistic styles. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s lush Romantic retellings of Greek myth are beautifully matched here by Fritz Eichenberg's powerful deeply textured color lithographs for King Midas alongside Rafaello Busoni's dreamlike and atmospheric interpretations of Pandora's Box. The trio is rounded out by Hans Christian Andersen's timeless satire The Emperor's New Clothes translated with brilliant fidelity by the renowned Danish-American actor Jean Hersholt and paired with the whimsical sharp line work and striking mid-century color palette of Ervine Metzl. Matching limitation numbers across this split-series release are exceptionally scarce and desirable making this specific slipcased group a premier cornerstone acquisition for collectors of the Limited Editions Club fine press folklore and the history of modern American illustration.
