Deux parties en un volume, parues respectivement le 30 mars et le 23 novembre 1872, chacune portant un envoi dAndersen il mentionne le premier dans son journal intime (H. C. Andersens dagbøger, vol. IX, p. 247) et le second est recensé par Henry Tuxen (Anderseniana, vol. 4, 1958-59, p. 155). Reliure demi percaline rouge à coins, dos lisse passé avec titre et filets dorés, plats de percaline noire. Premier plat présentant une légère craquelure dans la longueur, coiffes et coins frottés, minuscule manque à la percaline en marge du premier plat. Rare recueil de contes exceptionnellement enrichi de deux envois autographes signés dHans Christian Andersen à son ami le célèbre danseur et chorégraphe Auguste Bournonville, quil appelle «Balletdigter» (poète du ballet) en hommage à son talent. Les envois figurent sur la page de faux-titre de chaque partie: «Vennen, Balletdigteren A. Bournonville fra hans Beundrer H.C. Andersen» [À lami, le poète du ballet A. Bournonville de son admirateur H.C. Andersen] et «Balletdigteren min geniale, trofaste Ven Hr. Balletmester Bournonville Hjerteligst H.C. Andersen.» [Au poète du ballet, mon brillant et fidèle ami le maître de ballet M. Bournonville / Sincèrement H.C. Andersen.] Le danseur et directeur de ballet du théâtre royal danois demeura un des plus grands modèles dAndersen, qui avait voulu être danseur dans ses jeunes années. Mais à linstar de bon nombre de ses protagonistes de contes de fée, Andersen naît dans «le mauvais corps». Renonçant à cette carrière, le conteur devenu célèbre mit à profit ses talents décriture pour la scène, et collabora à plusieurs reprises avec Bournonville. * La rencontre entre auteur et dédicataire remonte aux difficiles débuts dAndersen sur les planches du Théâtre royal danois. Arrivé seul à Copenhague en 1819, Andersen aspirait à faire carrière sur la scène quil considérait comme un royaume de magie et dextase, et lutta désespérément pour se faire une place comme danseur de ballet, acteur ou chanteur. Il entre comme élève en 1821 dans la classe de ballet de Carl Dahlén, qui remplaçait, à la tête du Théâtre Royal Antoine Bournonville, le père dAuguste auquel ces envois sont adressés. Andersen fait quelques discrètes apparitions dans des rôles de figurant, et subit les critiques de ses professeurs, qui raillent sa silhouette mince et sa posture maladroite. Le futur auteur du très autobiographique Vilain petit canard renonce à la danse mais continue dobserver la brillante carrière du jeune Auguste Bournonville son exact contemporain, né le même jour ainsi que lécole de danse promise à un immense succès quil était en train de fonder à Copenhague. Vingt ans plus tard, le conteur auréolé de gloire a remplacé le danseur contrarié: Andersen revint au Théâtre Royal où se réunissaient les plus grands artistes de lâge dor du Danemark et «collabora étroitement avec Bournonville tant sur la conception des uvres que sur leur mise en scène, tout comme il fut également une inspiration répétée pour le travail chorégraphique du maître de ballet avec ses propres contes de fées et projets théâtraux» (Jürgensen, Digterens & balletmesterens). Ses talents de conteur se traduisent à merveille dans ses livrets dopéra et textes pour le théâtre. Aux côtés de Bournonville qui signe la mise en scène et la chorégraphie des danses delfes, Andersen connaît son premier succès sur les planches avec sa comédie féérique en deux actes intitulée Lykkens Blomstiv (La Fleur du bonheur) puis avec un conte lyrique et dramatique Liden Kirsten (La Petite Christine) également chorégraphié par son ami. ‎<p>A near fine copy of the limited 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' in a half leather binding by Birdsall of Northampton and London. Copy number 233 of 500 signed by Kay Nielsen on the limitation page. With 12 tipped-in colour plates 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Kay Nielsen's third illustrated book begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. The tales chosen include The Snow Queen and The Red Shoes and Nielsen's illustrations perfectly complement the text. The binding has small gilt-decorated raised bands to the spine creating 3 compartments - the top one with gilt titles and the other 2 with a decorative gilt design. It is in near fine clean and sound condition with very light rubbing to the surface and edges. The endpapers are marbled with the small stamp of Birdsall - Northampton and London to the bottom of the front pastedown. They were one of the major British bookbinders from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century - finally ceasing to trade in 1961. Top page edges are gilted; remainder untrimmed. The contents are complete and very clean. There are some small splits at the front endpaper joint but the book is sound. There is a small spot in the side margin of p118 where the surface has been lost and has attached to the side margin of p119. There is very slight browning at the page edges. Gold decorated vellum limited Edition De Luxe exceptionally illustrated and signed by celebrated art nouveau artist Kay Nielsen. <br /> <br /> OVERALL CONDITION: VG<br /> <br /> BOOK INFO<br /> <br /> Published in 1924 after work was begun 12 years prior production interrupted due to WW I by Hodder & Stoughton in London. In original vellum with gold lettering and elaborate decoration. This is signed copy #226 out of only 500. There are 28 tipped in plates 12 color and 16 black and white. The book is illustrated continuously with black and white head and tail pieces vignettes and text bordering design work. Collated and compete. Folio 12.5" x 10". <br /> <br /> CONDITION<br /> <br /> In VERY GOOD antiquarian collectible condition. Square spine with firm hinges and joints the gutter is cracked between two leaves about midway through book. Gilt a bit dulled and vellum darkened with age and light soiling particularly the spine. Boards tight to the text block which is nice as the boards are prone to bowing. Some light rubbing and bumping to a few of the corners. Interior is quite clean overall with some partially erased pencil writing on FFEP and evidence of removed bookplate on front pastedown. A few bent corners creases signs of handling and areas of foxing by the last few plates primarily.<br /> <br /> PROVENANCE<br /> <br /> One page curiously midway through the book with DARTMOUTH COLLEGE LIBRARY embossed on a bottom page margin. No other library markings on the book or signs of it being ex-library though. <br /> <br /> ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR <br /> <br /> Kay Nielsen 1886-1957 was one of the most significant illustrators during the early 20th century along with Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. Nielsen's illustrations were influenced by oriental art the style of Aubrey Beardsley and the Art Nouveau movement. He was immensely popular in the early 20th century the Golden Age of Illustration which lasted from when Daniel Vierge and other pioneers developed printing technology to the point that drawings and paintings could be reproduced with reasonable facility. Nielsen is also known for his collaborations with Disney for whom he contributed many story sketches and illustrations not least for Fantasia. Nielsen was renowned at the Disney studio for his concept art and he contributed artwork for many Disney films including concept paintings for a proposed adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. The adaptation was to be part of a package film containing various segments based on Andersen's fairy tales. The film was made over 50 years after his involvement with Disney. . Federer on the front board matching the color illustration on the front of the dust jacket. Green-toned illustrated endpapers. 272 text pages. First-issue dust jacket with publisher's illustrated advertisement for its children's book collection on rear panel and listing of publisher's titles on rear flap. Book is very bright clean and unworn. Tightly bound and square with strong uncracked hinges. Just one small light stain at the bottom edge of the rear board a few tiny faint brown spots on the fore edge of the text block and a lightly bumped top front corner. Flawless interior with clean pages. All color illustrated plates present and in Fine condition. Previous owner's name in light pencil on the front pastedown. Dust jacket is bright and clean with no sunning. Light wear along all the edges and folds and a small chip at the top spine edge without loss of lettering. Jacket is protected in a mylar cover.
