Curieusement la réimpression de l'édition dite du Régent (car on doit l'illustration à Philippe d'Orléans) a été publiée à la même date, sans lieu et sans date, et sans nom, et contenant également 4 en-tête et 4 cul-de-lampe; on ne doit certes pas les confondre, mais la coïncidence est étrange.Sans lieu, non nommé - 1745 - 6 ff, 159 et xx pages.Charmante réimpression de l'édition publiée en 1731. Elle est illustrée d'un frontispice, de 8 figures gravées par Scotin, de 4 charmants cul-de-lampe historiés et 4 bandeaux de titre (amours jouant). Page de titre en rouge et noir.Reliure plein veau de l'époque. Dos à nerfs orné et doré. Pièce de titre maroquin rouge. Tranches rouges. Filet doré sur les coupes. Rares rousseurs. Très bon état. Format in-8°(17x10).Longus (appelé parfois également Longos) est un auteur grec. On ne sait pratiquement rien sur Longus. On présume qu'il est né à Lesbos et qu'il a vécu à l'époque d'Hadrien, au IIe ou IIIe siècle. On lui attribue le roman intitulé Daphnis et Chloé, parfois présenté sous le titre de «Pastorales de Longus».

First Edition Thus Lowe's new critical Greek text with english translation on diglot facing pages. 12mo red cloth gilt spine lettering. xi 1 195pp. B/W frontispiece portrait of the statue of Pan and Daphnis at the Mueso delie Terme in Rome. Tips a bit worn spine a bit toned sound otherwise. Annotated with learned and comments in a fine contemporary hand with extensive notes to the rear blanks. Among other reflections the annotator remarks on p. 160 'The excision of over-erotic passages has led here and there to solecism e.g. the change of 'hon' to 'heyn' in IV11 calls for the omission of 'kai' before 'ouden'.' We suspect the owner's name 'R. A. Clarke' appears to be in another name leaving this first reader unfortunatlely anonymous noting only 'From Class Rev. August 1910 after the final notes. 'Despite its perennial popularity and the admiration of no less an authority than Goethe Daphnis and Chloe was largely ignored by classical scholars being considered trivial and/or pornographic until the 1960s when the ancient novel began to be viewed as a worthwhile object of study.'
