New York NY: The Hellman Press. Very Good. 1958. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Connoisseur's Edition. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking the slipcase. There is some light bumping and wear to the spine ends of the book covers. The book and its contents are in clean bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked gift notation on the front free page. "In 1962 Ginzburg began publication of his first major work Eros which was a quarterly hardbound periodical containing articles and photo-essays on love and sex. Herb Lubalin was the art director and second on the masthead. It was named after the Greek god of love and desire Eros. The publication was bound in cardboard in a 13" x 10" format averaging about 90 pages in length. Only four issues of Eros were published. Ginzburg attempted to get mailing privileges from postmasters at Blue Ball and Intercourse Pennsylvania but was declined because the anticipated volume was more than what the post office of these two small towns could handle and therefore at last Ginzburg settled to send his magazines from Middlesex New Jersey. Avant-Garde" published by Ralph Ginzburg for about three years from 1968 to 1971 featured art and erotic literature and photography as did his earlier magazine "Eros" for which Ginzburg went to prison on obscenity charges. Articles in the January 1970 issue include: "The Dr. Who Called the A.M.A the "American Murder Assn;" "The Virgin Forest" a photo essay featuring trees and nudes; "The Handwriting on the Wall" an article on separation of church and state; "Israel Captured" a selection of photos from an exhibition then at the Jewish Museum in New York showing everyday life in Israel; a collection of paintings by the Austrian artist Friedrich Hundertwasser titled "Postcards From Pandemonium;" and "The Bigger They Are The Harder They Fall: The Memoirs of a Fat Girls' Casanova." First Edition. About 10 3/4 x 11 1/4 inches 64 pages bound in light card full color covers with front cover photo titled "Heliotrope" showing a female nude partially hidden by tall grass and back cover showing five cartoon nudes above a five paragraph call for readers to submit "manuscripts describing their most memorable sexual adventures." Inside back cover contains vintage erotic photo of a woman and a bicycle. Some age-tanning on inside covers o/w covers show only minimal surface and edge wear. Text also shows some age-tanning though photos and art have survived the years remarkably well. Covers and text show almost no tearing creasing or bumping. Included in this wide-ranging collection are excerpts from "The Story of O" "Fanny Hill" "Lolita" "Naked Lunch" and "Candy" as well as selections from erotic works by Henry Miller Lawrence Durrell Samuel Beckett Chester Himes Frank Harris and the Marquis DeSade. First edition first printing. Light green cloth boards show some wear at edges corners and spines ends not uncommon for large heavy books. Text edges show light soiling o/w the text is clean and unmarked tight and square. The primarily white dustjacket has performed well in protecting its book but shows considerable wear and soiling as a result. The front panel shows two inch-long parallel tears in the top edge of the front panel tape-repaired on the verso. The dj shows other minor wear at spine ends corners and edges but no other significant flaws. No creases not price-clipped.
