<p>This is a nice condition early copy of "Shooting an Elephant" by GEORGE ORWELL with its original dust jacket. 1950 1st edition 7th printing stated; Harcourt Brace & World; New York. The book is a collection of 18 essays including "Some Thoughts on the Common Toad" "Reflections on Gandhi" "Lear Tolstoy and the Fool" "How the Poor Die" "A Hanging" "Books vs. Cigarettes" "Nonsense Poetry" and more. The title essay "Shooting an Elephant" recounts Orwell's time as a British colonial police officer in Burma. It details the psychological pressure of imperialism where Orwell feels forced to kill a rogue elephant to avoid appearing foolish in front of the local population despite knowing it is morally wrong.<br /><br />Condition:<br />The book is in Near Fine condition and appears unread. Clean both inside and out with only a thin stain marker strip along the top edge of the text block see photo. Clean covers and spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Some very light tanning to the pastedowns from the jacket flaps. Despite this unremitting pressure he produced a major sequence of articles on 'The Intellectual Revolt'. He wrote one of his very goodst short essays 'Some Thoughts on the Common Toad'. He reviewed Zamyatin's We wrote two radio plays for the BBC The Voyage of the Beagle and a version of 'Red Riding Hood' for Children's Hour and a pamphlet for the British Council British Cookery; these three are printed here for the first time. The complex history of 'How the Poor Die' is unravelled as is the problem posed by his passports giving his date of birth incorrectly something that would prove significant in the writing of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell renewed contact with Yvonne Davet; he corresponded with Ihor Szewczenko; he tried to get Victor Serge's memoirs published in English and with Arthur Koestler to expose Soviet responsibility for the massacre of the Poles by arranging for a translation of Joseph Czapski's Souvenirs de Starobielsk to be published. Despite all this Orwell did get away to Jura with his son Richard. He was able to relax and even fish as his Domestic Diary published for the first time shows; and he wrote fifty pages of Nineteen Eighty-Four. This volume includes Orwell's telling letter to Dwight Macdonald on the necessity for people to rid themselves of leaders of a violent revolution before they became entrenched 5 December 1946. The vast majority being thew 1st printing with this new wrapper design. The complete set of eleven volumes 1959-1962 comprising: Nineteen eighty-four; Animal farm; Critical essays; Down and out in Paris and London; Keep the aspidistra flying; Homage to Catalonia; Burmese days; A Clergyman's daughter; The Lion and the Unicorn; The road to Wigan pier; Coming up for air. Eleven volumes. The complete set of Secker & Warburg's Uniform Edition issued with the variant dust wrappers designed by Denis Piper 1928-1987. The bulk of the Uniform Edition was issued in the publisher's generic green and white wrappers however between 1959 and 1967 Secker periodically issued those same volumes in these striking Denis Piper-designed dust wrappers. Good examples of the individual volumes are hard to find and complete sets of all eleven volumes are very rarely encountered. Whilst some copies with the Piper-designed wrappers went to the trade the majority were issued to schools and public libraries and unmarked examples in good condition are scarce. These eleven copies were issued to the trade only one of the wrappers is price-clipped and all eleven volumes are in very good to near Fine condition. Save for a one volume with a bookplate and another with a inscription all are in nice condition . Whilst the list of books issued in the Uniform Edition often includes Orwell's 'Shooting an Elephant' there was no issue of that title in a Denis Piper dust wrapper; this is the complete set of Denis Piper's work for the Edition. The eleven volumes comprise: Nineteen eighty-four 1962; Animal farm 1962; Critical essays 1960; Down and out in Paris and London 1960; Keep the aspidistra flying 1959; Homage to Catalonia 1959; Burmese days 1961; A Clergyman's daughter 1960; The Lion and the Unicorn 1962; The road to Wigan pier 1959; Coming up for air 1959.
