ORWELL, GEORGE.
Kammerat Napoleon. Illustreret af Sys Gaugin. - FIRST DANISH EDITION OF "ANIMAL FARM"
Vilhelm Priors Forlag 1947. Uncut in the original illustrated wrappers. Extremities somewhat worn but otherwise fine. A few leaves with a bit of thumb-soiling otherwise internally very nice and clean. Illustrated in colours.

First Danish edition of one of the most important literary works of the 20th century the satirical-political masterpiece that so magnificently reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and brilliantly caricatures Stalinism. As Orwell himself put it with this work he deliberately tried "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". Orwell "Why I Write". "Animal Farm" brilliantly portrays not only the corruption of the revolution but also how traits of human character themselves corrupt society. The greatest flaw of revolution is not the corrupt leadership on its own but also the greed indifference ignorance shortsightedness wickedness etc. that govern the individuals that make up the masses. The work was written between late 1943 and early 1944 when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain among both the people and intelligentsia. Not surprisingly it was initially rejected by both British and American publishers and the publication of it was thus delayed. When it did appear 1945 it became a great commercial success however probably not least due to the soon to follow Cold War. The work is generally considered one of the best and most influential literary productions of the 20th century. unknown

Orwell, George
Keep the Aspidistra Flying.
London: Victor Gollancz 1936. Frist edition of Orwell's classic social criticism of money-worship and status. Octavo original cloth. Very good in the rare original dust jacket with some restoration and flaps restored. First editions in the original jacket are rare. Owell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying centers on the story of Gordon Comstock and his romantic ambition to defy the worship of the money and status and the dismal life that results. Orwell wrote the book in 1934 and 1935 when he was living at various locations near Hampstead in London and drew on his experiences in these and the preceding few years. At the beginning of 1928 he lived in lodgings in Portobello Road from where he started his tramping expeditions sleeping rough and roaming in the poorer parts of London. The novel was adapted into a 1997 film of the same name directed by Robert Bierman and stars Richard E. Grant and Helena Bonham Carter. Victor Gollancz hardcover

Orwell, George
Keep The Aspidistra Flying
Gollancz 1936. A first edition first printing published by Gollancz in 1936. A very good book without inscriptions. Two small tape burns to the endpapers. Amazingly clean within without foxing. Browning to the spine and to the board edges. Spine tips a little worn. No dust wrapper. Scarce. Keep the Aspidistra Flying 1936 by George Orwell is a satirical novel that explores the struggles of Gordon Comstock a disillusioned poet who rejects the materialistic society of 1930s England. Gordon quits his decent job to work in a low-paying bookshop determined to escape the "money god" that he believes dominates people's lives. However his principled stand against capitalism leads him into deeper poverty frustration and isolation. The aspidistra a hardy houseplant symbolizing respectability and middle-class values represents the very bourgeois ideals Gordon despises. Despite his efforts to rebel Gordon eventually realizes that his disdain for money has trapped him in misery. In the end he surrenders to societal norms accepting a steady job marriage and the aspidistra as symbols of compromise. The novel critiques both the perils of poverty and the inescapable influence of societal expectations. Gollancz unknown
