London: Secker and Warburg 1949. A first edition first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1949. A near fine or better book with very light fading to the edge of the front board. No inscriptions and internally fine and appear unread with sharp corners. In the superb unclipped wrapper which unusually still retains its red colour which is rare for this title. Some wear to the corners and a little wear to extremities. No tearing. Accompanied by the Evening Standard 'Book of the Month' wrap-around band. The best example we have handled and now housed in a superb solander box. The novel depicts a totalitarian stateOceaniawhere surveillance propaganda and linguistic manipulation enforce absolute power. The novel follows Winston Smith who works rewriting history for the Party but secretly longs for truth and personal freedom. His relationship with Julia and brief rebellion bring him into conflict with the omnipresent Big Brother and the enigmatic Inner Party. Through Newspeak thoughtcrime and the terror of Room 101 Orwell explores authoritarian psychology the fragility of individuality and the systematic destruction of reality. The novel remains a foundational critique of modern political oppression. This the variant maroon wrapper usually browns and fades with large chipping. An additional flap to the rear pastedown that opens to reveal a certificate of authenticity of the limited edition binding. One of 100 numbered copies this is number 93. In near fine condition. Written while Orwell suffered severely from tuberculosis and published shortly before the disease claimed his life the novel is a work “of hectic devilish claustrophobic intensity… nightmarish in the telling†Clute & Nicholls 896.
