Endlessly experimenting with design composition and color Hiroshige captured in these paintings as no where else in his work his poetic and idyllic sense of nature. This exquisite volume offers a most accessible introduction to the work of Utagawa Hiroshige 1797-1858 master Japanese print maker and artistic force during the Edo period an exciting era in Japanese art. Bird and flower painting kacho-e is a sub-genre of the ukiyo-e style. Though naturalistic ukiyo-e "aims to capture the spirit or essence of the object depicted not strictly its material form." The 91 spectacular color plates reproduced from the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Collection at the Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design highlight Hiroshige's refined color sense economy of composition and delicate never-sentimental renderings. Haiku or kyoka translations accompany most plates and an informative introduction by Bogel gives a short history of the Edo period describing its roots and symbolism and placing Hiroshige and his influence in historical context. In una lingua diseguale, dura e colorita, efficace, ora colta, ora schiettamente popolare, Boiardo compone le vicende di Angelica, Orlando e Ranaldo sullo sfondo di assedi e imboscate che oppongono i valorosi paladini ai fieri saraceni. Sul duello tra Orlando e Ranaldo per l'amore di Angelica s'interrompe il poema. Ne riprenderà il filo l'Ariosto nel suo "Orlando furioso".

Poche opere letterarie hanno avuto la forza rivoluzionaria del capolavoro di Matteo Maria Boiardo, noto dal Cinquecento come "Orlando innamorato", ma il cui titolo originale più probabile è "L'inamoramento de Orlando". Nell'immaginario cavalleresco fa il suo clamoroso ingresso l'amore, che sconvolge il cuore del casto Orlando spingendolo sulle tracce dell'affascinante Angelica, mentre anche altri guerrieri cristiani e saraceni inseguono invano la dama. È l'inizio di una storia nuova, che cambierà per sempre le regole del romanzo cavalleresco. La sorprendente narrazione di Boiardo è nutrita da una ricchissima quantità di influssi che mescolano generi e modelli diversi, dalle letterature classiche al Medioevo più favoloso, in un susseguirsi di invenzioni che aprono la strada al romanzo moderno. Il seguito sarà raccontato da Ludovico Ariosto nell'"Orlando furioso".
