London: Printed by J.G. for Richard Marriot 1663. bound with "Hudibras. The Second Part. By the Author of the First". 4 216 pages. Also third part dated 1678. Bound in exceptionally fine binding and in very good condition with the bookplates of Daniel Henry Holmes an avid book collector. This edition certainly is one of the rarest being that it is a first issue. A pirate copy came out the year before in 1662 and all proceeds from the sale of the book by the thief were recovered by Butler. Collation is as follows: 2 blank TP A3-8 B8-I8 K-R8 2nd TP B-I8 K-O8 P4 3rd TP A-I8 K-R8 S7 2 Blank.</p><p>Hudibras by Samuel Butler is a critique of the English Civil War and pokes at the Puritans and their military zeal to spread the word of God with Bible and Pike. This attractive printing and wonderfully bound copy of Butler's mock epic in octosyllabic couplets its three parts first published in 1663 1664 and 1678. Modeled after Don Quixote the work satirizes the hypocrisy and self-seeking of the Presbyterians and independents represented by the title character Hudibras and his servant Ralpho demonstrating the pairs greed stupidity cowardice and duplicity. Butler a Colonel in the Cromwellian army is involved in any number of various comic misadventures and Butler is squarely pointing at Oliver Cromwell and his lot as Butler was and remained a confirmed Royalist and Anglican King Henry VIII's Anglican Church.<br /><br />This mock epic became the rage of its time and was followed by nearly 27 editions that included later engraved illustrations to highlight the comedic adventures of the two. Two volumes still in their original paper covered boards. The boards and spines are now very worn - especially the spine to volume 1 and the front board of volume 1 is virtually detached. There is foxing and creasing throughout but the plates are generally in good condition. Page edges untrimmed. Vol 1 lacks the front free end paper and one of the plates is almost detached. A perfectly serviceable set of two reference copies the 1801 edition of the work published first in the 17th century; nothing too terribly fancy but complete and sturdy still attractive and sits nicely on the shelf. Large annotations and a Preface by Zachary Grey LL.D. Fine steel engraving of a portrait of the author Samuel Butler after an etching by Ridley. Lovely steel-engraved vignette at title page of first volume. Printed by T. Bensley noted printer in London for several local booksellers. Complete in two volumes bound in octavo format measuring 8 1/2" tall x 5 3/4" wide. Rebound in what appears to be tree-calf leather consisting of a smooth light-colored calfskin treated with chemicals in such a manner as to represent a tree trunk with assembling to branches to both front and rear covers. Rubbed joints edges scuffed tips bruised tip to bottom of the second volume producing crimping to first range of bottom page tips. Gilt dentelles along all four edges of front and rear covers to both volumes. Darker backstrip indicating original publisher's binding affixed to spines with gilt lettering and fleurs-de-lis to both spine heads and feet scuffed a bit. Thus a possible rebind in the past. Prior owner's ink inscription to upper edge of first free page of Volume I. Sumptuous marbled endpapers front and rear. Both volumes feature bookplates of Gordon J. Van de Water and a William Charles Kerr affixed neatly. Moderate foxing to and light-to-moderate waffling of text-block else a quite attractive set. A dozen full-page aquatint plates after J.H. Clark Hogarth and others. This is a suitably bound nicely illustrated exemplar of Butler's epic Hudibras "a vigorous satirical poem written in a mock-heroic style by Samuel Butler 1613–1680 and published in three parts in 1663 1664 and 1678. The action is set in the last years of the Interregnum around 1658–60 immediately before the restoration of Charles II as king in May 1660" Wikipedia. We meet the knight Good Sir Hudibras and encounter commentary on religious divisiveness. The full-page plates are quite fine one being heavily toned leading to some shadowing opposition. Seven plates to Volume II one being a fold-out into three panels quite fine; five to Volume II. Lovely steel-engraved illustrations as chapter heads and feet. Volume I frontis title page lii 4 2-435 pp.; Volume II: frontis matter 2-446 pp. plus 19 pp. index 3 pp. of works by the publisher.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. "L'occhio di Praga" è un saggio poetico di Michel Butor, costruito come "collage letterario" ispirandosi ai collages di Jiri Kolàr sulla Praga di Kafka. L'opera è unita, in dialogo strettissimo, a "Risposte", una riflessione di Kolàr sul proprio fare artistico. Nell'"Occhio di Praga" di Butor, il punto di partenza è la poesia di Baudelaire. La scelta potrebbe parere anomala, dal momento che è Kolàr stesso, in "Risposte", a indicare Mallarmé (ma, con qualche limite, pure Marinetti) come iniziatore della langue poetica contemporanea; in questo fiancheggiando una lunga e autorevole tradizione critica. Ma Mallarmé è etereo, di una raffinatezza estenuata, difficile, a volte impervio; e sempre teso in una ricerca nervosa, di uno splendore metallico, tanto quanto Baudelaire è imbevuto degli umori e delle opacità, dei profumi e dello sporco del vivere. Per questo la "materia Baudelaire" assomiglia così tanto alla "materia Kolàr", alle vecchie banconote usurate, alle scatole di cartone con le marche e i disegni, ai libri che nessuno legge più, ma che rivivono scolpiti, bucherellati, a strisce e frange. Una materia impura, carica di batteri, di segni, di storie, che viene rimontata - come fa Butor con un mazzetto di celebri versi baudelariani a risignificare e risignificarsi.
