Exemplaire 1074, un des 1000 exemplaires sur vélin chiffon de Lana, contenant 21 miniatures en couleurs (une à double-page, 6 à pleine page et 14 dans le texte), texte encadré et orné à chaque page, belles lettrines ornés en tête de chapitre. Très bon état. Enrichi d'une aquarelle originale signée de André Hubert. Charles Ier d'Orléans, né à Paris le 24 novembre 1394 et mort à Amboise le 5 janvier 1465, duc d'Orléans et de Valois, est un prince connu surtout pour ses oeuvres poétiques écrites lors de sa longue captivité anglaise. Il est le fils de Louis Ier, duc d'Orléans (le frère du roi de France Charles VI), et de Valentine Visconti, fille du duc de Milan. Il est le père du roi de France Louis XII.

The letter begins: 'As cheapness seems the chief topic at present I send you 'something cheap' which I trust may suit the Gazette.' He asks 'when any verse of mine appears in the Gazette' for a stamped copy. He has 'many friends connected with the Local press who would quote & thus be serviceable to you'. In a postscript he tells Jerdan: 'You must please yourself about "Something Cheap" it is out of my usual way written off hand: and I may have missed my mark.' Light gray cloth lettered/decorated in brown and gilt beveled edges text block edged in gilt. Nicely preserved copy with minor soiling to cloth minor tanning along spine panel. Firm binding clean interior minor foxing to a few late pages. 1st ed. matching dates. x266 pp. Former owner's signature address and note re. purchase inked at bottom corner inside front cover. An association copy of some sort though we are uncertain what sort showing the cut signature of Fireside poet John Greenleaf Whittier cut measuring approx. 3 1/4" x 1 3/8" mounted inside front cover of uncertain connection to the author. There is a remote possibility that Whittiier who died in 1892 owned this copy which was published in 1886 though we rather doubt it but we have no alternative explanation as to how or why his cut signature of the authenticity of which we have no doubt should have been mounted inside this book and we have uncovered no direct personal connection between the two poets though obviously they were contemporaries and likely would have known of each others' work.
