Top cover abraded along joint and corner tips worn through. All edges gilt. Bookplate carelessly removed. Previous owner's name and date in pencil 1875. NOTE: The initial "J" in the artist's name resembles a modern "F" which led me to confuse him with his second son F. Noel Paton who served as director of Commercial Intelligence to the Government of India. 69 pp. including versos of drawings. Coleridge's peom with DorÈ's illustratiosn was first published in London, 1875, Paris, 1976-1877, and New York, 1877. The present repdorduction is a facsimile of a copy of a New York printing of 1884., except that the cover has been redisigned in a manner more in keeping with the present-day taste. The stock, Curtis Colophon, was selected because its finish and color closely resemble those of the copy reproduced. - 1846 (S.d), 19,5x35,5cm, une feuille. - Poème composée de 2 strophes de 10 vers, et de 28 vers en alexandrins ; dans la première est évoquée et développée la thèse sur l'art de Flaubert, dans la seconde la réponse de Louise Colet. Une feuille cartonnée pliée en trois volets de format oblong. Bel état. Le poème, certainement écrit dans la deuxième phase de la relation entre Louise Colet et Flaubert, vers 1846, est manifestement la tentation poétique de régler le différend théorique qui les oppose, celui-ci engendrant une conception de la vie totalement opposée. A la conception froide et intellectuelle de Flaubert et sa doctrine de L'art pour l'art, dans laquelle atteindre l'expression artistique est d'abord se dépouiller de l'expression des sentiments et du moi romantique : On n'écrit pas avec son coeur mais avec sa tête" (25 août 1852), Louise défend la supériorité de l'amour sur l'art, affirmant que aimer c'est vivre et que seul importe de vivre ; ainsi son poème s'achève ainsi : "La beauté seule est belle, et l'amour seul est grand!". Le poème, entièrement autobiographique, est un dialogue entre son amant Flaubert et la femme amoureuse et poète. Le premier vers est certainement textuel et introduit directement Flaubert dans le texte dans un jeu de dialogue : "Tu me dis... aime l'art mieux que l'amour!" Les 9 vers en alexandrins qui suivent developpent la conception flaubertienne du vrai et du beau, conception que l'on retrouve maintes fois explicitées par Flaubert dans sa correspondance à Louis Colet. La strophe suivante est la réponse de Louise : "Et moi je te réponds : ..." La correspondance de Flaubert et de Louise Colet suivit l'évolution de leur relation, d'abord échange de lettres passionnées, la correspondance deviendra rapidement un échange de vues sur le beau et le vrai, sur l'écriture et l'art, car dans dans cette vision, il n'y avait jamais que deux façons d'être incompatibles, celle d'une femme passionnée entièrement dévolue à ses sentiments, et celle d'un homme pour qui son art demandait tous les sacrifices en plus d'un rejet du monde des émotions. Flaubert demande clairement à Louise de se dépouiller de sa féminité, c'est à dire de ses émotions et du ruissellement de ses propres sentiments pour atteindre à une expression pure. Jamais Louise ne consentira à se trahir, quitte à incarner toute une conception de la femme inapte à l'art et à l'écriture, affirmant encore une fois dans ce poème la puissance de ses sentiments autobiographiques dont naissent ses oeuvres. Une pensée totalement contraire à la littérature flaubertienne, hérétique au dogme de l'art pour l'art. Louise colet, celle qu'on appela La muse, fut une beauté blonde aux yeux bleus qui captiva d'abord le philosophe Cousin, puis Flaubert, Musset et Vigny. Elle avait 36 ans lorsqu'elle rencontra le jeune Flaubert âgé de 25 ans, et elle se trouvait au faîte de sa gloire littéraire.
