Follia in scena
br.

CONCRETE POETRY. Chiniquy Rev. C. Charles.
Manual of the Temperance Society; Dedicated to the Youth of Canada . . . Translated from the French by Pierre Octave Démary Student at Law . . . First English Edition.
Montreal: Lovell & Gibson Printers St. Nicholas Street 1847. Original wrappers. First edition in English.

The edition in French Manuel de la société de Tempérance was published the same year—and published while Chiniquy was a leading force for Canadian temperance and indeed while he was still both a Roman Catholic priest and a Canadian. He later emigrated to Illinois left the church and became an anti-Catholic Protestant activist. Besides a wealth of anecdotal content on the antics of Canadian drunkards and those who had reformed the rear wrapper also includes a typographical-graphic concrete prose poem "The Drunkard's Tree" a characteristic piece that to the squinting optimist anticipates perhaps Apollinaire.

Modern bookplate on the inside front wrapper with that owner's modern ink signature on the title page. Upper wrapper and first four leaves stained; some light wear and soiling; a good copy. Lovell & Gibson, Printers, St. Nicholas Street books

Conde Carmen
Senza Eden. Poesie scelte (1929-1980)
br.

A3V: prologue cap2. A4V; dramatis personae with cast. Bl: HT with text cap4. K2: epilogue cap2. 6 /2 x 8 3/4 inches tall octavo. The Mourning Bride is a tragedy written by British playwright William Congreve. It premiered in 1697 at Betterton's Co. Lincoln's Inn Fields. The play centres on Zara a queen held captive by Manuel King of Granada and a web of love and deception which results in the mistaken murder of Manuel who is in disguise and Zara's also mistaken suicide in response. There are two very widely known quotations in the play; from the opening to the play: Music has charms to soothe a savage breast The word "breast" is often misquoted as "beast" and "has" sometimes appears as "hath". Also often repeated is a quotation of Zara in Act III Scene VIII: Heav'n has no rage like love to hatred turn'd Nor hell a fury like a woman scorn'd. This is usually paraphrased as "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." --- Wikipedia J. Tonson hardcover books
