Francesco Dall'Ongaro (19.6.1808 Mansuè di Oderzo (Veneto),10.1.1873 Napoli) fu celebre scrittore e critico d'arte oltre che attivo partecipante mazziniano. Nel 1853 venne espulso dalla Svizzera perché implicato nei tentativi insurrezionali mazziniani e si rifugiò in Belgio. BUONA COPIA. PRIMA EDIZIONE. RARO.

Beautiful marbled paper over boards contemporary leather-backed with raised bands rich friezes and gold titles on burgundy leather gusset on spine with five fleurs-de-lis. Marbled endpapers. Generally clean unmarked interior with moderate to heavy foxing here and there light soiling to top edge. Scuffing to tips edges but binding tight interior bright. XXIII 2 2--249 1 pp. Four fine black-and-white plates including of an imagined Adam and Eve complete with elephants lions cats dogs and horse. Fine title page vignette intaglio insignia of the Virgilian Colony motto: tibi Mantua Palma. Title continues: 'To Which Is Prefixed an Account of the Circumstances Leading to the Suppression of Lord Byron's Correspondence With the Author, and His Letters to His Mother, Lately Announced for Publication'. Robert Charles Dallas (1754-1824) was a Jamaican-born British poet and conservative writer, who is best known for this contentious book on Lord Byron. When Byron died in April 1814, Dallas (who was introduced himself to Byron by letter on the publication of Hours of Idleness [1807] proposed to publish the Recollections. Some letters addressed by Byron to his mother during his eastern travels were given to Dallas by Byron. Dallas, on the strength of these and other communications, prepared an account of Byron's life from 1808 to 1814. He notified Byron in 1819 that the Recollections were finished, and would be published only after his own death. On the grapevine (via Byron's aunt Julia Heath) Augusta Leigh, Byron's half-sister who was dealing with a number of would-be biographers, heard of the plan and objected strongly. Dallas won over George Anson Byron, his brother-in-law. John Cam Hobhouse and John Hanson, Byron's executors, obtained an injunction from Lord Eldon against the publication of the letters. Extracts from the Recollections appeared in The Courier, in November 1824, but about a month behind Thomas Medwin's Conversations of Lord Byron. By the time of the Courier publication, Dallas had returned to France and died. There was a French version, and his son Alexander Dallas had the book published in 1825, in Paris. 2 poesie firmate, una probabilmente autografa
Un brano è intitolato “Inno alla malinconia” – Venezia 1833. “Piaccia ad altri il sol lucente / Sulla messe adulta e bionda / Piaccia un labbro sorridente / E una vita ognor gioconda / Se la sorte avversa agli uomini / Lascia mai sereno un ciglio / Sulla retta dell’esiglio […] / Tu mi bea di care immagini / Ché spiegarti io non son vago, / E goderti sol m’appago”. L’altro, probabilmente autografo, non ha titolo: “Ave Maria! Quest’è l’ora tranquilla / Che’l tuo nome gentil mi scende al cor […] / O sovrana e celeste creatura / Ave, e gradisci de’ miei labbri il suon!”. Prete senza vocazione, svestì ben presto l'abito talare. A Trieste fu prima redattore e poi direttore della «Favilla». Nel 1848 a Venezia fu direttore del giornale repubblicano «Fatti e Parole». Durante la Repubblica romana, era aiutante di Garibaldi e deputato. Caduta la Repubblica riparò all'estero e pur non ripudiando i suoi ideali mazziniani si persuase dell'importanza dell'azione della monarchia sabauda. Tornato in Italia alla vigilia della guerra del 1859, fu nominato professore di letteratura drammatica. Insegnò a Firenze e a Napoli.
