New York: J. K. Wellman 1846. Rare and highly collectible contains one the first printings of Edgar Allan Poe's listed as Edgar A. Poe in the table of contents famous poem The Raven nevermore. The last entry in the book is Poe's on pages 376-378. Other authors inlcude: John Greenleaf Whittier John G. Whittier here with The Ballad of Cassandra Southwick. Quarter leather leather extended spine and corners and black marbled or rubbed boards. 378 pages with mostly bright pages with tanned borders - pages in center tend to be bright with tanned boarders and some light foxing; endpapers are tanned. Probably steelcut black and white engravings. Front cover is detached but present. Leather spine has gilt titles is rubbed and worn at head and heel. A highly desired volume worth restoring. We note one previously folded page corner and pages 97/98 have been torn out it was the beginning of an essay Luther - His Faith and Work and is missing. The first publication of this famed poem was in January 1845 in the American Review another literary compendium under the pseudonym Quarles. A little edge wear. Pages age toned. John Leng was a keen advocate of Scottish songs and in 1901 he established a trust "to stimulate literary and scientific pursuits amongst the youth of Dundee" and to encourage and promote the teaching of the Songs of Scotland. This volume was published shortly afterwards. Generally clean inside small tear to one page. Traditional songs some well known Auld Langsyne Charlie is My darling John Peelothers not so much. A tight decent quite handleable first edition of the hefty poetry volume another volume covered fiction -- nice mid 19th-century compilation of the classics of the day printed in two-column format and with each piece numbered separately. From the library of Wisconsin civic leader JAMES M. LYNCH chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War appointed quartermaster general in 1865; half-title page bears a fine nonauthorial gift inscription to him: "James M. Lynch / From / James W. Ludlam / Dec. 25th 1858." At upper right of same page Ludlam's pencilled ownership signature appears. Gilt-stamped lettering to cover and spine and gilt-stamped dentelles interior and illustrations to front cover. Compartments divided by five raised bands. Scuffing to tips edges spine head and foot and with considerable scuffing to and loss of gilt borders on rear panel. Tank-like of appearance though heavy tall quarto size in format. Unpaginated initial text but then 30 duotone engravings from original drawings by various artists such as J. Tenniel H.C. Selous F.W. Hulme C.W. Cope T. Faed J. Holland and others as then engraved by Williams Dalziel Thompson Linton Measom and many others. A foxed tissue-guarded portrait frontis of Byron previous owner's bookplate inside front flap and another plate inside rear panel with a penned "1378" perhaps an accession number.
