‎Onder het dertigjarige directeurschap (1982-2012) van Robert Hoozee onderging het Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent een ware transformatie. Hoozees drang naar herbronning, multidisciplinariteit en internationale contextualisering van de Belgische kunst uit de periode 1789-1950 vond zijn weerslag in de collectievorming van het MSK en in de tentoonstellingen die onder zijn leiding tot stand kwamen, zowel in het Gentse museum als elders. Hoogtepunten in de collectievorming - van James Ensor, Fernand Khnopff, George Minne en Odilon Redon over Oskar Kokoschka en Erich Heckel tot Raoul De Keyser - illustreren Hoozees streven naar topkwaliteit. Marc mainly focused on animal portraits, where he tried to capture not so much the external appearance, but the inner essence of the animal. The color symbolism he developed played a major role in this. For example, blue stood for "the male principle, stiff and spiritual" and yellow for "the female principle, soft, cheerful and sensual". Under the influence of Cubism, he also greatly simplified the forms. As a result, his paintings tended increasingly towards the abstract. ‎Jan Vaerten (Turnhout, 5 augustus 1909 ? Beerse, 23 december 1980) was een Belgisch kunstenaar. Na het vroegtijdig verlaten van de school, dit als gevolg van zijn revolutionair karakter, komt hij bij zijn oom terecht in de verf- en drogisterijwinkel. Leest en studeert veel en komt vroeg met de harde waarheid van het leven in aanraking. Buiten enkele avondlessen in beeldhouwen aan de academie te Turnhout -klas van Victor Avonds- en enkele zondagslessen te Schilde bij Albert Van Dyck, is hij autodidact. De kunst wordt een levensdoel, een levenshouding. Hij huwt met Coleta Gevers in 1942 (overleden in 1973). Hij vestigt zich te Beerse. Hij heeft drie kinderen, Maike, Frank en Dirk. Hij verlaat de verfwinkel. In 1951 wordt hij benoemd tot professor tekenen aan het Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten te Antwerpen. Dit stelt hem in staat zich in zijn kunst gans vrij uit te leven. Hij is medestichter van het culturele centrum "Het Atelier" te Deurne bij Antwerpen. Dit centrum genoot een internationale faam, dankzij de merkwaardige tentoonstellingen, concerten, dansavonden en voordrachten. Het was een plaats waar vele kunstenaars elkaar ontmoetten, wat soms tot heftige, maar vruchbare gedachtewisselingen aanleiding gaf.‎

‎Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something from something else. The term can be applied to art that is based on an object, figure or landscape, where forms have been simplified or schematised. It is also applied to art that uses forms, such as geometric shapes or gestural marks, which have no source at all in an external visual reality. Some artists of this ?pure? abstraction have preferred terms such as concrete art or non-objective art, but in practice the word abstract is used across the board and the distinction between the two is not always obvious. Abstract art is often seen as carrying a moral dimension, in that it can be seen to stand for virtues such as order, purity, simplicity and spirituality. Since the early 1900s, abstract art has formed a central stream of modern art.‎

‎Ongenae werkte in de jaren 30 als leerling tekenaar bij een reclamebureau. Vanaf de Tweede Wereldoorlog begon hij onder invloed van schilders als Kandinsky, Picasso en Juan Gris werken te maken die al bijna abstract te noemen zijn. Vanaf 1951 werkte hij tijdelijk in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Tijdens het opbouwen van een tentoonstelling over De Stijl in dat museum zag Ongenae voor het eerst werk van Mondriaan. Zijn werk kreeg vanaf dat moment steeds minder kleur en het werd meer en meer gestileerder. Vanaf de jaren 60 ontwikkelde Ongenae een meer eigen stijl door met gekleurde rechthoeken een zekere dynamiek aan zijn composities te geven. Hij behoorde in 1955 tot de oprichters van het Nederlandse kunstenaarscollectief de Liga Nieuwe Beelden.‎
