Nyad, Diana
Find a Way
New York: Alfred A. Knopf 2015. First edition. Hardcover. Fair/fair. Nicely signed roughly treated. Signed boldly by Nyad on the first blank in black sharpie no inscription. Blue hardcover in dustjacket stated first edition no number-line. A fair copy of both book and dustjacket. Notably edgeworn with bumping and discoloration along the bottom edge and spine ends impacted. Binding is cocked forward and although all pages are still bound in there is a feeling of looseness. Joints and hinges are solid. All pages are clean and unmarked other than the author's signature. The dustjacket is shiny and bright not clipped but suffers from a series of small toothmarks at the top of the front and rear panels spineward - otherwise this would be a very nice jacket. 308 pp. color photo inserts corresponding to the areas of looseness in the binding.

Alfred A. DOWN FOR THE COUNT: A Delilah West Novel AWARD FINALISTSIGNED COPY
N.Y.: Saint Martin's Press 1997. 1st edition November 1997 so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. SIGNED COPY signature only by the author on the title page. A SHAMUS AWARD FINALIST for Best Novel. A Delilah West mystery "Private eye Delilah West must be the toughest cookie in Orange County: In her sixth case Trade-Off 1994 etc. she survives two of the most violent meet-cutes on record. The first takes place in the pre-Christmas rush at the Main Street Mall when an unemployed aerospace worker goes homicidally berserk. Delilah not only kills the perp guiltily covering up her heroic complicity and letting a dead security guard take the credit but meets her newest and youngest client: mall-rat Brian Hall 12 who pays her a ten-dollar retainer to find his missing dad. Delilah starts phoning Texas where trucker Travis Hall was last seen but hardly has time for a nibble before the second meet- cute when her lunch with her boyfriend Erik Lundstrom's daughter turns into a double kidnapping. Nicki Lundstrom who's 18 but acts as bratty as a 12-year-old breaks the silence of the room they're locked in to tell Delilah that it's all her Delilah's fault and she's right though in a way that neither of them can predict. And even after the kidnapper turns Delilah loose to run back to glamorous megabucks developer Erik and bring the hefty ransom to the drop-off point it's almost as bad as still being locked up: Erik ignores her to deal with his grief and distraction and his security chief broadly hints that Delilah was in on the snatch from the beginning. Meanwhile Travis Hall is still missing. A no-frills tale that's as good a marriage of detective work and domestic problems as you're likely to see this season." -- Kirkus Review. Signed by Author. CRIME SCHOOL SIGNED COPY
New York NY U.S.A.: Putnam Publishing Group The 2002. 1st edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. SIGNED by author at title page. Another Detective Mallory Novel. "In this seventh gripping entry in O'Connell's popular Mallory series Special Crimes investigator Kathy Mallory again prowls the mean streets of New York digging deeper into her past even as she and her cohorts ferret out a grisly serial killer. Each novel in the series reveals a little more about the utterly improbable and compellingly mythic life story of its protagonist a tough cop and computer ace raised by hookers on the streets of New York. In this installment Mallory's particular mentor the prostitute Sparrow is found partially scalped hanging in a room decorated with jars of dead flies an M.O. that recalls a murderer from decades ago. The grim murder plot is offset by a cast of cartoony characters ranging from series regular Charles Butler Mallory's gentle giant best friend to the rookie yellow-haired detective Ronald Deluthe aka Duck Boy. O'Connell illuminates these oddballs with her lightly whimsical prose: "When Charles closed his tired eyes he saw a tiny thief who ran with whores and lived by guile surviving on animal instinct to get through the night an altogether admirable child." The side puzzle a bibliomystery involving a series of pulp Westerns that obsessed Mallory as a girl almost steals the show when it is solved. This novel is gritty streetwise funny and sure to bring in more fans for the still-enigmatic Mallory." -- Publshers Weekly. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Book. KILLING CRITICS SIGNED COPY
N.Y.: Putnam 1996. 1st ed. with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in dust jacket not price clipped with protective mylar cover. SIGNED by the author at title page. . A Kathleen Mallory title. "Readers beware! That sly and oh so gifted Carol O'Connell is just as cunning as her beautiful near-sociopathic heroine Kathy Mallory creeping up on unsuspecting readers with softly caressing words and languidly flowing sentences then sucker-punching them with shockingly explicit violence that's as vivid as it is grisly. In her third and most stunning book O'Connell follows NYPD investigator Mallory who with the aid of old pals Riker Coffey and of course faithful admirer Charles Butler is determined to solve the brutal "art as death" murder of an untalented but highly touted artist-critic. Mallory believes the case is the work of the same killer who 12 years earlier hacked a young artist and a talented ballerina to pieces. The case is as baffling and intricate as any Mallory has faced with art critics bag ladies madmen and mafioso playing key roles. Despite warnings from her superiors to butt out and back off she persists and single-handedly solves the case. But as mesmerizing as the murder case is it's heartless soulless Mallory herself--computer genius street fighter provocative waif peerless investigator manipulative beauty---who's absolutely the star of this brilliant thriller. O'Connell's well-nigh flawless plotting and incandescent writing play important supporting roles and the heart-stopping devastating ending is worth a thousand curtain calls." -- Booklist. In a remote -- and superstitious -- village in County Cork Ireland Garda Siobhán O'Sullivan must solve a murder where the prime suspects are fairies . . .Family is everything to Siobhán: her five siblings; her dear departed mother for whom the family business Naomi's Bistro is named; and now her fiancé Macdara Flannery. So precious is her engagement that Siobhán wants to keep it just between the two of them for a little longer. But Macdara is her family which is why when his cousin Jane frantically calls for his help Siobhán is at his side as the two garda rush from Kilbane to the rural village where Jane and her mother have recently moved. Unfortunately tragedy awaits them. They find Jane who is blind outside the cottage in a state. Inside Aunt Ellen lies on her bed in a fancy red dress no longer breathing. But whoDevout believers in Irish folklore the villagers insist the cottage is cursed -- built on a fairy path. It turns out Ellen Delaney was not the first to die mysteriously in this cottage. "Modesty Blaise attracts adjectives as honey draws bears: beautiful smart sexy tough not-to-be-messed-with and of course totally unconventional. Those who don't know her will probably enjoy this collection of short capers more than her longer adventures. .Here we're treated to romps involving South American guerrillas and a cricket bowl "A Better Day to Die"; a novel way to get over the Berlin Wall "The Giggle-Wrecker"; Willie Garvin's own tale of derring-do "I Had a Date with Lady Janet" happily not narrated in Cockney; jewel thieves on the Riviera "A Perfect Night to Break Your Neck"; vicious industrial spies in Finland "Salamander Four"; and a rich man's kinkiness "The Soo Girl Charity". Some readers will lap up all the derring that's done and leave it at that.
