Mary first visited Cornwall in 1913when she was one year old and ever sincethe West Country has held a firm place in her affections. Her childhood enchantment with the sandy beaches high cliffs and bumpy rocks has endured and deepened as she has discovered more and more of this unique land. She remembers being taught to ride by Jenny the Exmoor pony boarding a captured German submarine and coming across a herd of llamas evacuated from Paignton Zoo during the Second World War.It was in the West Countrywith her husband's encouragementthat Mary began to write. Her characters and their homes have often been inspired by the people and countryside around heras the quotations from her novels demonstrate.Herewhen she shares some of the true stories and favourite locations that have made their way into her booksshe allows us to glimpse something of the process by which a writer mixes imagination and reality in the creation of fiction. 'Part of the Scenery' is a private journey through the West Country one rich in memories which illuminate the sometimes wild and independent nature of this region as well as its more familiar sunshine and beaches. From Land's End to Polzeathfrom South Sands to Mary's current home in Totnes this journey is vividly brought to life by Kim Sayer's beautiful photographs. And it is a journey we can all share. Kim Sayer has been a London photographer for twenty-five yearsspecializing in advertising and editorial work.He particularly enjoyed working with Mary Wesley on this project as it allowed him to get to know more of the West Country. He now lives and works in south Devon. WHEN DEATH COMES STEALING SIGNED COPY AWARD FINALIST
New York NY U.S.A.: Putnam 1994. 1st ed. fine in dust jacket with two small nicks. Author's first book featuring Tamara Hayle a black single-mom and former cop turned private investigator. SIGNED COPY signature only by the author on the title page. A SHAMUS AWARD FINALIST for Best First Novel. "In her adult fiction debut Essence magazine executive editor Wesley introduces a decisive independent PI and single mother as heroine but sets her in a transparent formulaic plot. Tamara Hayle a divorced ex-cop and her 14-year-old son Jamal live in Newark N.J. not far from Jamal's father DeWayne who has three other sons by three different women. Ordinarily Tamara has no sympathy for DeWayne but when one of his sons dies of what the cops say is a drug overdose she agrees to DeWayne's request that she investigate the young man's apartment. She finds a neat room with fresh food in the fridge and extra money carefully stashed away--not the expected residence of a cocaine addict. When another of DeWayne's sons drowns in a bathtub five days later and another is shot soon after that Tamara becomes terrified for Jamal's safety. Wesley creates a broad interesting cast from gentle Jamal to a suave violent-tempered Jamaican who tries to seduce Tamara but too little is revealed of the PI herself. The book's strength lies in its portrayal of black family life in dangerous times--future installments of this promised series will have to fill us in on Tamara." -- PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. Women who have dressed as men to embark on a grand adventureto search for a lost husband or simply to escape the dull confines of domestic lifehave enjoyed a long and popular tradition in Western culture. From Newcastle to New Brunswickfolksongs and ballads have celebrated these intrepid heroines who defied all expectations of the weaker sex.Reportersbiographersstreet performers and the women themselves churned out versions of the female warrior's adventures on the high seas and in battle. Julie Wheelwright recreates and explains the fascination of the female warrior which captivated young women and even inspired some to undertake similar exploits.Drawing on memoirslettersdiaries and historical archivesand illustrating her examples with rare sketches and photographsshe traces the career of dozens of women who lived as men.Manylike Valerie Arkell-Smithwho as Colonel Barker passed for a British Army Officercourted and eventually married a Miss Elfreda Hawardbecame 'male' in almost every sense.Otherssuch as Christian DaviesIreland's most famous 18thC soldierreceived poems from adoring women who claimed that 'the Amazonian race begins again'.Emma Edmondswho left her fiance and native Canada to fight in the American Civil War;Hannah Snella sailor in the Royal Navy; Maria Bochkarevaa private in the Tsar's Army; and Captain Flora Sandeshero of the Serbian Army who toured Australia thrilling her audiences with tales of bravery and patriotism are some of the intriguing and rebellious women 'Amazons and Military Maids' brings to light. But Julie Wheelwright also exposes the tensions that these women who livedworked and played as men came to accept as the price of their tentative freedom. They struggled with the contradictions of harbouring both 'male' and 'female' identities within themselves.Although these women have been the stuff of myths and legends for centuries only very recently have their stories been treated as important clues to understanding changing sexual roles patriotism and the idealogy of war and peace.'Amazons and Military Maids' follows the evolution of the virago in breeches from the height of her popularity in the 1700s to her re-emergence as the nation's pride and joy during the First World War.The female warrior's challenge to conventionthe way in which her experience is constantly transformed over time to accommodate appropriate concepts of masculinity and femininityand how women fare in all-male environmentsare just a few of the insights her story offers.
