Women in Aviation, Photography
Original Photo of Female Pilot a Testament to Women's Role in Early Aviation Circa 1920s
Women in Aviation. Silver gelatin print photo of female pilot sitting in early aircraft with her hands on the gears the body of the plane partially visible behind her. Circa 1920s. 4.75†x 6.5†inches. Legislative barriers as well as social and economic factors made it nearly impossible for women to participate in early aviation. Getting through flight school and gaining access to a plane to fly was a testament to the incredible tenacity and resources required for a woman to access both. Photo shows a woman sitting belted to pilot’s seat one hand on each large gear shift feet prepped on the thin ledge above the plane’s front tire. She wears a gingham hat cut close to her head a wool coat wool pants and knee-high leather boots with protective-wear covering the shins. The plane’s front tire is muddy suggesting she’s just landed in a field. A few ink spots do not obstruct the plane or female pilot. This original photo is evidence that women participated in early aviation. Overall good condition. unknown

Women in Medicine, Anatomy
1920 Photograph of Female Medical Student Doing Anatomical Experiment
Original Vintage Photograph from June 1920 of a group of young scientists including a young woman doing a dissection of a human skeletal cadaver. Black and white silver gelatin photograph. 7" x 5" photograph on 8" x 10" board. Captioned "June 1920" on verso. It is likely that this coeducational group are medical students with one older man in glasses seeming to be their instructor. In the background we can see a variety of anatomical drawings as well as bones preserved in liquid in a glass case. The students wear white lab coats except for the female student who is wearing a white gown. While women had entered the nursing profession in large numbers during the 19th century there were still very few female doctors in 1920 making this photo a depiction of a rather uncommon scene. There is a horizontal crack along the upper part of the board which is holding but delicate. The photo itself has a very small closed tear and a small blue smudge in the bottom left corner but is in very good condition overall. unknown

Women in Medicine, Women's Employment
Albumen Portrait Medicine and Surgery College Faculty Including Female Faculty in 1901
1901. Imperial size albumen portraits of faculty members at a medical school including both men and women faculty members . 1901. Large photo measures 24 x 20 inches. 37 subjects including 7 women. Names listed beneath portraits. Mounted to photographer's board the age of the subjects and size of the group strongly suggest they are not students. Women were not allowed admission to American medical schools for most of the 19th century often leaving the country to receive their education and fulfill residency requirements. For a medical school to have this number of women in student or faculty positions in the year 1901 would have been exceptionally rare. Although female medical schools were eventually established educational activists advocated for integrated institutions so that women received instruction equal to their male peers. Above the year written in Latin reads "Veritatis Lux Ducet" The truth will lead the light. Toning does not affect images. Overall in very good condition. unknown

Women in Medicine, Nursing
Chicago College for Nurses Archive 1902-04
1902. Women in Medicine Archive of four documents from the Chicago College for Nurses 1902-1904. The materials reflect early 20th-century formal educational structures for women entering the professional nursing workforce providing insight into the emergence of women’s medical training in the Midwest. The archive contains four printed documents: three commencement invitations for the classes of 1902 1903 and 1904 and one printed 1904 alumni banquet program. Together they form an invaluable snapshot of women’s medical education and the institutions that supported them just after the turn of the century.

The Chicago College for Nurses was an early 20th-century institution dedicated to the formal education of women in nursing. While specific historical records about this college are limited its existence aligns with a broader movement in Chicago during that era to establish structured nursing education programs. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries Chicago became a hub for nursing education with several prominent institutions emerging. Notably the Illinois Training School for Nurses founded in 1880 was the first nurse training school in the Midwest and was modeled after Florence Nightingale’s school in London. Its founders aimed to establish a respected profession for women by providing scientific training to care for the sick and improve patient care in hospitals .
These materials reflect a moment when formal nursing education was expanding opportunities for women to enter professionalized scientifically grounded fields previously closed to them. Their tone and formality reflect both pride in academic achievement and the seriousness with which these early female medical professionals were regarded by their peers and instructors. The presence of both male and female faculty—including several female physicians such as Dr. Anny Werner Linder and Dr. Bertha McDonald—suggests the progressive structure of the college at a time when women in medicine were still fighting for full professional recognition. Minor foxing and toning consistent with age. Overall very good condition. A cohesive group of documents from an important regional center for women’s medical education in the Progressive Era. unknown

Women in Medicine, Nursing
Early 20th Century Nursing Archive 1904-1920
Women in MedicineNursing Archive of six documents chronicling women in nursing 1904-1920. The archive includes a graduation program from a California Catholic nursing school a photographically illustrated commencement booklet government-issued nursing service letters including Civil Service and Quartermaster communications to a Boston area nurse and a printed commencement invitation from the Chicago College for Nurses. This archive provides a vivid glimpse into the evolution of women’s professional identity in the medical field—spanning religious educational and federal institutions—during and after World War I. Archive includes:

1 Chicago College for Nurses Commencement Invitation 1904. Printed bifold card formally inviting guests to the April 5 1904 graduation ceremonies at Jefferson Park Presbyterian Church in Chicago. Emblem of the college printed at top.

2 Photographic nursing school graduation booklet 1909. Heavy cardstock wrapper with original green ribbon tie. Includes 13 elegant full-page photographic portraits of the nursing school graduates in caps and uniform holding their diplomas. First portrait is signed “Webster 1909†perhaps the graduate pictured or the photographer. Pages separated by tissue paper.

3 Providence Hospital Training School for Nurses Graduation Invitation 1909 with envelope and personal name card for one of the graduates Evelyn Cerini. Invitation to the April 29 1909 commencement exercises held at Saint Francis de Sales Hall in Oakland California. Issued jointly by the Sisters of Providence and the school’s graduating class.

4 War Department Letter of Discharge 1919. Carbon copy of a letter from the Surgeon General's Office dated July 11 1919 officially discharging nurse Mary Graham from active military service. Also documents a $136.40 final bonus payment and the issuance of a Bronze Victory Button. Signed by Lt. Col. G. I. Jones and notarized by John E. Ogden on Jan. 16 1920.

5 U.S. Civil Service Commission Appointment Letter 1919. Original letter dated Oct. 8 1919 and signed in type by Commission President John A. McIlhenny notifying Graham of her status as a temporary appointee to a nursing post in the Treasury Department’s Public Health Service with instructions for permanent appointment.

6 War Department Nurse’s Uniform Issuance Letter 1920 with mimeographed copy. Dated Jan. 13 1920 confirming the delivery of authorized clothing to Miss Graham in accordance with wartime provisions under the Act of Feb. 28 1919. Sent by 1st Lt. George E. Pruitt Quartermaster Corps Depot Branch Brooklyn NY.

This archive spotlights the critical and often overlooked role of early 20th-century women nurses in both peacetime medical institutions and military service. The religious and civic frameworks surrounding their work—exemplified by the Providence Hospital Training School and the Chicago College for Nurses—provided unprecedented avenues for social mobility and intellectual agency for women. The military discharge documents and Civil Service appointment reflect federal recognition of nursing as an essential profession during World War I and its aftermath affirming the nationalization of women’s labor in public health. Light handling wear across several pieces with one small tear and hole to Quartermaster letter copy. Graduation booklet near fine photo crisp and clean. Overall very good condition. A powerful and unusually diverse set of original documents capturing the intersection of gender education and federal service in Progressive Era nursing history. unknown
